Au lieu de gémir sur l'état de la société actuelle en déplorant son indifférence massive à l'égard de la pratique religieuse, l'ancien archevêque de Poitiers propose un christianisme qui se déprend d'un sacré aliénant pour s'engager "dans les domaines où l'humanité joue les conditions de son existence : la justice et la paix, la dignité et le respect". En se démarquant de la volonté de constituer des citadelles chrétiennes pour faire face à l'indifférence, cet essai dessine les traits d'une foi chrétienne qui accepte de se laisser questionner par le désir. Aux antipodes de la figure d'un Dieu qui juge "d'en haut" les conduites des femmes et des hommes, Albert Rouet trace, en s'appuyant sur la tradition biblique, notamment les récits évangéliques, une voie autre : faire du dialogue avec Dieu, le lieu où l'existence se creuse, une expérience où l'insatisfaction du désir n'est pas comblée par la possession et la consommation toujours plus grandes d'objets. Loin de se limiter un nouveau discours, cet essai très argumenté invite à vivre le christianisme comme une expérience qui libère le désir car "quand des hommes disent ne plus croire à rien, il leur reste encore à mieux devenir humains... Ouvrir sa porte débouche sur l'inconnu de tous les possibles". En se mettant à l'écoute des récits que font les hommes de leur vie, la foi chrétienne peut se vivre au quotidien : elle devient alors cette "sortie de soi vers le bien de l'autre qui caractérise le lieu où Dieu peut être cité". Les technologies hypermédias ont le potentiel de multiplier les sources d'information et de favoriser une communication scientifique plus ouverte à la discussion et au débat. Cependant, la lecture des documents hypermédias entraîne des difficultés, telles que la désorientation, pour de nombreux lecteurs. Nous avons évalué un ensemble d'hypertextes publiés par des revues de vulgarisation scientifique à la lumière des recommandations ergonomiques issues d'études expérimentales. Il en ressort que la plupart des publications offre une lisibilité médiocre, ignorant souvent les recommandations publiées. (...) Ensuite, notre étude expérimentale réalisée avec 59 lecteurs d'un dossier de vulgarisation, en version papier et hypertexte, nous a permis de confirmer le premier constat et d'identifier des sources de difficulté. Les lecteurs de l'hypertexte avaient une moindre compréhension du dossier et une plus grande perception de charge cognitive, bien que leur satisfaction soit aussi forte que celle des lecteurs du papier. La présente expérience montre des résultats significatifs en faveur de la version papier, mais pas de rejet a priori de la technologie. Nous présentons quelques suggestions pour améliorer la lisibilité des revues en ligne.Hypermedia can potentially increase the number of information sources and improve scientific communication by facilitating public debate. However, reading hypermedia documents can lead to difficulties such as disorientation for a number of readers. We investigated a corpus of hypermedia reports from online science magazines in the light of ergonomic recommendations based on results from experimental studies. We found that most publications showed poor levels of readability and did not follow the published recommendations. An experiment involving 59 readers and one popular science report from our initial corpus published in print and hypertext versions confirmed our first observations and allowed us to identify sources of difficulty. Hypertext readers showed poorer comprehension performance and higher perception of cognitive load. However satisfaction levels were high for hypertext and paper readers. The present study shows significant results in favor of the print format, but bias against technology from readers. We conclude with some suggestions to improve the readability of online science magazines. (shrink)

Tantôt l'humble raison implore de l'erreur le droit pour la vérité de prendre place dans le cortège public des autres opinions : elle revendique la tolérance. Tantôt la raison triomphante interdit tout droit à l'injustice et à l'erreur : c'est l'intolérance de la vérité. S'il en était ainsi, on comprendrait que l'histoire n'eût fait depuis que se répéter. Les parlers ruraux abondent en métaphores associées à la parole, notamment à la façon dont elle est fabriquée et produite dans cet ouvroir miniature qu’est la bouche. Deux séries de représentations semblent en réalité s’opposer : un modèle technique qui assimile la parole aux activités textiles d’une part (filer, coudre), aux gestes des petits artisans d’autre part (raboter, étamer, limer) ; un modèle organique qui associe la parole à la sécrétion salivaire (baver) et à l’excrétion (« chier sur, faire des (...) crottes »). Ces deux ensembles de représentations servent à opposer une parole féminine et une parole masculine tout en définissant la norme de chacune d’elles. L’étude met en évidence la portée symbolique de la parole féminine qui, nouant le lien entre la passé et le présent, filant le temps cyclique de la communauté, s’identifie avec la dynamique calendaire ; elle montre aussi la complémentarité que cette parole entretient sur le plan symbolique avec la parole des hommes qui, associée à l’excrétion, à la croissance et à la maturation des végétaux et aux gestes qui tranchent et ouvrent, semble figurer la succession des cycles qui doivent à un moment s’ouvrir les uns sur les autres et l’inévitable transformation de toute chose vivante. L’ouvrage de Mgr Rouet et de ses collaborateurs traite de l’expérience des « communautés locales » dans le diocèse de Poitiers, projet diocésain qui repose sur la vocation baptismale des chrétiens et leur capacité de porter la mission de l’Église, en dialogue avec la société. Cette expérience donne à penser en matière de théologie pratique par sa cohérence ecclésiologique et son articulation avec la réalité ambiante. Elle appelle cependant un approfondissement théologique de ses présupposés et quelques précisions canoniques.

Résumé Michèle Le Dœuff est une philosophe qui a beaucoup contribué aux études beauvoiriennes, mais dont l’ apport a été sous-évalué. Pourtant, Le Dœuff a été la première à faire un travail critique, philosophique et féministe autour du Deuxième Sexe, d’ abord dans son célèbre article « Cheveux longs, idées courtes » (1977), puis de façon plus approfondie dans L’ Étude et le rouet (1989). This monograph examines the development of two major approaches in the study of Greek vase painting by focusing on a comparison (...) of the work of Sir John D. Beazley with that of Edmond Pottier. Beazley, an English scholar, spent his scholarly life attributing vases to various formerly unnamed artists based on [End Page 306] their style of drawing, thereby ascertaining for the first time the artistic history and stylistic development of Attic black-figure and red-figure vase painting. Pottier, a French scholar, founded the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, an international series whose original goal was to publish all ancient clay vases. Each scholar's interests contrasted with the other's in many ways. Beazley's work focused more on the object and Athens, while Pottier was opposed to the study of individual artists and was particularly interested in the relationship of the origins of Greek civilization to the East and the broader context of the vessels.The book's introduction sets the historical and intellectual background of Beazley and Pottier. Areas covered include the early history of collecting, initial attempts at defining the works of individual Greek vase painters, some influential early catalogues of Greek vases (e.g., those of Hamilton's collection), and the role that the copying of motifs from ancient pottery had in spreading the interest in Greek vase painting in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, particularly the part played by the Wedgwood workshop. I miss here any reference to the fine work of Brian A. Sparkes on these subjects (The Red and the Black: Studies in Greek Pottery[London and New York, 1996] 34-63).The first chapter considers the most influential, immediate predecessors of Beazley and shows how their work formed the intellectual framework for his accomplishment. They are Wilhelm Klein, whose important study of and signatures on Attic vases still serves as the basis for our interpretation of them; Paul Hartwig, who was the first to attribute vases to an anonymous master; and Adolph Furtwängler, who in collaboration with Karl Reichhold initiated the monumental three-volume work, Griechische Vasenmalerei, which featured exceptionally accurate drawings of vase paintings. The author astutely notes that Furtwängler's work on attributing Roman copies of Greek sculpture to artists was likewise influential in augmenting the interest in style and artistic personalities. The intertwined relationship between connoisseurship, collectors, and the art market is touched on briefly in the discussions of Hartwig and Edward Warren. It might also have been noted here that the wording and style of Beazley's earliest work on the Kleophrades Painter clearly owes its inspiration to Hartwig.Pottier's early life and career are the focus of the next chapter. This was the time when museum catalogues and encyclopedic dictionaries were for many the signs of significant national scholarship. Indeed, after France's loss in 1870 in the Franco-Prussian War, Pottier and many of his contemporary compatriots sought to affirm the intellectual vitality of their nation by initiating and completing such projects. Pottier's contribution was to publish Vases antiques du Louvre, in which photography was used for the first time on a large scale to illustrate the vases, and to serve as one of the editors of the Dictionnaire des antiquités grecques et romaines, in which he was also responsible for many of the entries on vases.Chapter 3 returns to the subject of connoisseurship and the two non-classical archaeologists whose methodology bear clear resemblances to Beazley's. Feminist philosophers have discussed the prospects for assessing values empirically, particularly given the ongoing threat of sexism and other oppressive values influencing science and society. Some advocates of such tests now champion a “values as evidence” approach, and they criticize Helen Longino’s contextual empiricism for not holding values to the same level of empirical scrutiny as other claims. In this paper, we defend contextual empiricism by arguing that many of these criticisms are based on mischaracterizations of Longino’s position, overstatements of (...) certain claims, and false dichotomies. Her contextual empiricism not only allows for the empirical support and disconfirmation of values, but Longino explicitly discusses when values can be empirically adjudicated and emphasizes the crucial role of the community for standards of evidence. We support contextual empiricism and elaborate a less direct account of “values as heuristics” by reviewing Longino’s theory of evidence and then using a case study from Elisabeth Lloyd on the biology of female orgasm, demonstrating the disconfirmation of androcentric values in evolutionary science. Within Longino’s and Lloyd’s contextual empiricism, values do not get treated as empirical evidence to be directly assessed by individuals, but rather values are heuristic tools to build models whose use can be validated or invalidated by communities based on their empirical fruitfulness in the logic and pragmatics of research questions in specific historical and cultural contexts. Upshot: All my commentators have focused, with varying emphasis, on issues related to: (a) cognitive vs. non-cognitive knowledge, (b) the role of the social environment, and (c) ethical responsibility. These issues are addressed in this response.

Context: On 12 November 2010, Ernst von Glasersfeld passed away. He was one of the most important, if not the most important, proponents of constructivist philosophy. Problem: In his life Ernst influenced many other scientists and philosophers. By whom was he himself influenced; who shaped his intellectual development? By collecting contributions from those who knew him closely or have an excellent understanding of radical constructvism we aim at presenting a cartography of the past and current state of affairs of radical (...) constructivism. These contributions should also shed light on the question of the legacy that Ernst leaves behind. Method: Some 25 authors accepted our invitation to contribute to this commemorative issue. Some texts are reminiscence essays expressing their friendship with Ernst, others are academic papers that investigate Ernst’s influence in various disciplines. Two contributions Ernst von Glasersfeld authored himself. Results: Ernst von Glasersfeld is described as an intellectual mentor for many of his students. His legacy is alive in many disciplines ranging from education science to linguistics. Implications: Ernst’s impact on mathematics education is described in some detail in these articles. However, his impact on science education has also been extensive. Constructivism is a foundation stone in the thinking behind the curriculum in many countries and this collection of papers should be useful to practitioners and researchers in education. We think that the work on conceptual analysis could be used more fully as a tool for modelling emerging concepts and hope that the articles here will facilitate interest in this aspect of Ernst’s work.
