No evidence of consolidation of evaluative conditioning during waking rest and sleep.Jasmin Richter, Alice Seffen, Taylor Benedict & Anne Gast - 2021 - Cognition and Emotion 35 (5):844-858.
Research on evaluative conditioning (EC) shows that attitudes can emerge from co-occurrences of stimuli, and accumulating evidence suggests that EC usually depends on memory for these stimulus contingencies. Therefore, processes known to aid memory retention may be relevant for the development of stable attitudes. One such process may be memory consolidation, assumed to be promoted by waking rest and sleep. In two pre-registered experiments, we investigated whether waking rest (vs. cognitive activity, Experiment 1) and sleep (vs. wakefulness, Experiment 2) in (...)

Comparative Political Theory and Cross-Cultural Philosophy: Essays in Honor of Hwa Yol Jung.Hwa Yol Jung, Fred R. Dallmayr, Calvin O. Schrag, Norman K. Swazo, Kah Kyung Cho, Hwa Yol, Zhang Longxi, Yong Huang, Youngmin Kim, Michael Gardiner, John Francis Burke, Herbert Reid, Betsy Taylor, Patrick D. Murphy, Alice N. Benston, Kimberly W. Benston, Jeffrey Ethan Lee & John O'Neill (eds.) - 2009 - Lexington Books.
Comparative Political Theory and Cross-Cultural Philosophy explores new forms of philosophizing in the age of globalization by challenging the conventional border between the East and the West, as well as the traditional boundaries among different academic disciplines. This rich investigation demonstrates the importance of cross-cultural thinking in our reading of philosophical texts and explores how cross-cultural thinking transforms our understanding of the traditional philosophical paradigm.

  13. Southern Black Women's Canebrake Gardens: Responding to Taylor's Call for Aesthetic Reconstruction.Joshua M. Hall - 2020 - Debates in Aesthetics 15 (2).
In this response, I suggest that Black southern women in the U.S. have always been central to the “reconstruction” that Taylor identifies as a central theme of Black aesthetics. Building on his allusions to Alice Walker and Jean Toomer, I explore Walker’s tearful response (in In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose (1983) to Toomer’s Cane (2011). Walker identifies their mothers’ and grandmothers’ informal arts of storytelling and gardening as the hidden roots of both her and Toomer’s (...)

Glaube und Vernunft. Ironie in der conditio humana?Charles Taylor & Hans-Peter Krüger - 2012 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 60 (5):763-784.
Charles Taylor explains a broader understanding of faith as well as of reason in his philosophical anthropology. In leading one’s own life, faith contains more than having certain beliefs, and reason grasps more than having scientific methods. Taylor answers questions regarding the relation of his great narrative to the approaches of M. Heidegger, M. Merleau-Ponty, M. Foucault, K. Jaspers, and S. Eisenstadt (axial cultures and multiple modernities). Insofar as the secularization of Christianity involves ironic reversals, all main directions (...)

    From Intersex to DSD: the Disciplining of Sex Development.Catherine Clune-Taylor - 2010 - PhaenEx 5 (2):152-178.
Drawing on the writings of Michel Foucault, this paper argues that the establishment of a new nomenclature and treatment model for intersexed individuals expands both the number of disciplines and the number of physical elements recognized as involved in (im)proper sex development and further, that the temporalization of these elements works to establish sex development as a discipline . Sex development thus emerges as a field of power/knowledge that allows for the distribution of not just individuals with intersex conditions, but (...)

A través (...)

: This response to the preceding article by Gastmans, Dierckx de Casterle, and Schotsmans challenges the notion of "good care" as the ultimate goal of nursing practice, explores further the possible goals of nursing and how they may be identified, and presents six elements of professional caring along with their related virtues and moral obligations.

Agency, argument structure, and causal inference.Alice Gb ter Meulen - 2008 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31 (6):728-729.
Logically, weighting is transitive, but similarity is not, so clustering cannot be either. Entailments must help a child to review attribute lists more efficiently. Children's understanding of exceptions to generic claims precedes their ability to articulate explanations. So agency, as enabling constraint, may show coherent covariation with attributes, as mere extensional, observable effect of intensional entailments.

  25. Note sulla questione dell’emendatio della filosofia prima: Clauberg, Leibniz, Wolff.Alice Ragni - 2024 - Noctua 11 (2):295-320.
This essay investigates the way in which Wolff takes an interest in the hypothesis of an emendatio of the prima philosophia from Leibniz’s incitement in De primae philosophiae emendatione, et de notione substantiae (1694) to re-found metaphysics. This makes it possible, secondly, to examine the way in which Wolff takes Johannes Clauberg’s ontology as a model, even though it represents in his view only a failed attempt at that same emendatio. Through the analysis of the texts, this article considers the (...)

The claim that photographs are fictionally incompetent (i.e. that they can only depict those particulars they are appropriately causally related to) is argued by Noël Carroll, Gregory Currie, and Nigel Warburton to be falsified by cinematic works of fiction. In response I firstly argue that it does not follow from cinema's having a capacity for the representation of ficta that photography has a capacity for the representation of ficta. Secondly, and inspired by the work of Roger Scruton, I develop an (...)

We present an experiment designed to investigate three different mechanisms to achieve impartiality in distributive justice. We consider a first-person procedure, inspired by the Rawlsian veil of ignorance, and two third-party procedures, an involved spectator and a detached observer. First-person veiled stakeholders and involved spectators are affected by an initially unfair distribution that, in the stakeholders’ case, is to be redressed. We find substantial differences in the redressing task. Detached observers propose significantly fairer redistributions than veiled stakeholders or involved spectators. (...)

Fandom as Methodology: A Sourcebook for Artists and Writers.Catherine Grant & Kate Random Love (eds.) - 2019 - London: MIT Press.
An illustrated exploration of fandom that combines academic essays with artist pages and experimental texts. Fandom as Methodology examines fandom as a set of practices for approaching and writing about art. The collection includes experimental texts, autobiography, fiction, and new academic perspectives on fandom in and as art. Key to the idea of “fandom as methodology” is a focus on the potential for fandom in art to create oppositional spaces, communities, and practices, particularly from queer perspectives, but also through transnational, (...)

The Sophist. Plato & Thomas Taylor - 1961 - Westbury, Wiltshire: Prometheus Trust. Edited by Thomas Taylor.
Plato's Sophist is a dialogue which is key to the understanding of Platonic metaphysics and dialectics: its traditional subtitle is 'On Being.' Thomas Taylor's translation was first published in 1804 as part of his Works of Plato - the first ever complete translation of Plato into English. This Students' Edition volume has extensive notes to help those coming anew to the Sophist to grasp some of the important concepts which stand behind the dialogue. Also added is an extract from (...)

The Role of Ontology in the Philosophy of Gilles Deleuze.Taylor Hammer - 2007 - Southern Journal of Philosophy 45 (1):57-77.
This essay discusses the role of being and ontology in the work of Gilles Deleuze. Starting from an examination of Alain Badiou's ontology and theory of the event, I discuss the possible opposition of being and the event in Deleuze's work. Though famous for his discussions of the univocity of being, Deleuze does discuss the event as that which is not being. Deleuze's theory of the event is similar to that of Badiou in that he considers the event to be (...)
