As the artificial intelligence (AI) ethics field is currently working towards its operationalisation, ethics review as carried out by research ethics committees (RECs) constitutes a powerful, but so far underdeveloped, framework to make AI ethics effective in practice at the research level. This article contributes to the elaboration of research ethics frameworks for research projects developing and/or using AI. It highlights that these frameworks are still in their infancy and in need of a structure and criteria to ensure AI research (...) projects advance in a way that respects norms and principles. This article proposes to draw from the European Union’s AI Act currently in development to shape these frameworks. Although, in the current form of the draft (as of August 2023), the obligations of the AI Act do not apply to scientific research, it is most likely that they will still have a strong impact on AI research considering the need to anticipate market placement or to test new tools in real world conditions. This article investigates what the risk-based approach in the AI Act implies for research ethics and highlights some AI Act obligations of particular value to implement for ethics review processes. Background: Clinical tests for detecting central and peripheral shoulder fatigue are limited. The discrimination of these two types of fatigue is necessary to better adapt recovery intervention. The Kinematic Theory of Rapid Human Movements describes the neuromotor impulse response using lognormal functions and has many applications in pathology detection. The ideal motor control is modeled and a change in the neuromuscular system is reflected in parameters extracted according to this theory. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess whether (...) a shoulder neuromuscular fatigue could be detected through parameters describing the theory, if there is the possibility to discriminate central from peripheral fatigue, and which handwriting test gives the most relevant information on fatigue. Methods: Twenty healthy participants performed two sessions of fast stroke handwriting on a tablet, before and after a shoulder fatigue. The fatigue was in internal rotation for one session and in external rotation during the other session. The drawings consisted of simple strokes, triangles, horizontal and vertical oscillations. Parameters of these strokes were extracted according to the Sigma-Lognormal model of the Kinematic Theory. The evolution of each participant was analyzed through a U-Mann-Whitney test for individual comparisons. A Hotelling’s T² test and a U-Mann-Whitney test were also performed on all participants to assess the group evolution after fatigue. Moreover, a correlation among parameters was calculated through Spearman coefficients to assess intrinsic parameters properties of each handwriting test. Results: Central and peripheral parameters were statistically different before and after fatigue with a possibility to discriminate them. Participants had various responses to fatigue. However, when considering the group, parameters related to the motor program execution showed significant increase in the handwriting tests after shoulder fatigue. The test of simple strokes permits to know more specifically where the fatigue comes from, whereas the oscillations tests were the most sensitive to fatigue. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the Sigma-Lognormal model of the Kinematic Theory is an innovative approach for fatigue detection with discrimination between the central and peripheral systems. Overall, there is a possibility to implement the setting for clinics and sports personalized follow-up. (shrink)

Spinozisme et esthétique. Ces deux éléments majeurs de l'historiographie allemande ne semblaient pas faits pour se rencontrer. D'une part, la réception tourmentée du spinozisme est nourrie de critiques métaphysiques et théologiques, depuis les premières diffusions de certains écrits du vivant de Spinoza. D'autre part, l'esthétique naît officiellement en 1750 avec le souhait de réhabiliter la sensibilité au moyen du goût et de la connaissance sensible. Or, en dépit des apparences, l'ouvrage fait l'hypothèse qu'une rencontre s'est produite en des lieux précis (...) que sont la théorie de l'imagination, l'art d'inventer ou la doctrine des affects, en un mot : l'anthropologie. Cette hypothèse conduit à affronter la problématique d'une "réception esthétique" du spinozisme et de son rôle dans la constitution de l'esthétique. La réponse proposée ici prend appui sur des "signes" au moyen desquels sont identifiées les "présences" du spinozisme dans l'esthétique rationaliste, de Tschim haus à Lessing. The article considers how the use of duplicates and the practice of photography interacted in museums of ethnography, contributing to the ambivalent framing of ethnographic objects as items that can be both scientific specimens and works of art. It focuses on the Musée d'ethnographie du Trocadéro in Paris and on the key period of its reorganization between 1928 and 1935, which was central to the institutionalization of French ethnology. By examining the place of duplicates in this museum, as well as (...) the major role attributed to photographs of objects and their materiality, the paper shows that these others of the ethnographic artefacts, often considered separately from their originals, still participated in the same project: the development of the museum and its growing cultural influence. While the duplicates positioned the museum in the various networks of the scientific community, the photographs appealed to the avant-garde, amateurs, African and Oceanian art dealers and the general public. In this paper, we explore the effect of musical expertise on whistled word perception by naive listeners. In whistled words of nontonal languages, vowels are transposed to relatively stable pitches, while consonants are translated into pitch movements or interruptions. Previous behavioral studies have demonstrated that naive listeners can categorize isolated consonants, vowels, and words well over chance. Here, we take an interest in the effect of musical experience on words while focusing on specific phonemes within the context of the word. (...) We consider the role of phoneme position and type and compare the way in which these whistled consonants and vowels contribute to word recognition. Musical experience shows a significant and increasing advantage according to the musical level achieved, which, when further specified according to vowels and consonants, shows stronger advantages for vowels over consonants for all participants with musical experience, and advantages for high‐level musicians over nonmusicians for both consonants and vowels. By specifying high‐level musician skill according to one's musical instrument expertise (piano, violin, flute, or singing), and comparing these instrument groups to expert users of whistled speech, we observe instrument‐specific profiles in the answer patterns. The differentiation of such profiles underlines a resounding advantage for expert whistlers, as well as the role of instrument specificity when considering skills transferred from music to speech. These profiles also highlight differences in phoneme correspondence rates due to the context of the word, especially impacting “acute” consonants (/s/ and /t/), and highlighting the robustness of /i/ and /o/. In this book, the author explores how video-image technology shapes our psychic and social environments from an art historiographical perspective. We know media technology is dramatically shaping our political and epistemological landscape: this book foregrounds the emergence of performative video images as a key factor in the revaluation of culture and politics. -/- Performative Images draws upon the work of video artists and activists in France between the 1970s and the early 2020s and focuses on significant practices with technology. Video (...) art and video activism are analysed together in the book to revaluate key concepts in media studies and foreground a performative approach to the theory of image technology. -/- The book engages works in visual culture, performance studies, digital studies, critical race theory, and feminist methodologies to account for the changes brought about by video technology in social and psychic life. Performative Images is about art and activists’ engagement in video technology—an engagement that unsettles the hegemonic narrative of dominant media, as well as the apparently politically neutral dimension of communication technology. Most models of rational action assume that all possible states and actions are pre-defined and that preferences change only when beliefs do. But several decision and game problems lack these features, calling for a dynamic model of preferences: preferences can change when unforeseen possibilities come to light or when there is no specifiable or measurable change in belief. We propose a formally precise dynamic model of preferences that extends an existing static model. Our axioms for updating preferences preserve consistency while (...) minimising change, like Hansson’s :1–28, 1995). But unlike prior models of preference change, ours supports default reasoning with partial preference information, which is essential to handle decision problems where the decision tree isn’t surveyable. Prior to being a body present in time, the Other is a mountainous relief in the landscape of a common world, a perspective shape that the “I” chooses to welcome or not. This relief—if it has often been considered from the point of view of an authority deciding where It should stand—will become, we hope, the possible zone of an encounter. When this relief comes out of the ground and enters the world, when the Other becomes simultaneously something that feels (...) and is felt, its expression opens up to become a zone of contact, a mobile and permeable layer of exchange. In this surrounding zone, the Other strips and exposes itself as evanescence. It is this unattainable geometric point that inscribes an atmospheric change by its presence: tempest, thunder, earthquake, but also heat, humidity, and evaporation. The Other is an organic sounding board reflecting our modes of being together. It is this person— per-sonare—through which the world resonates, who transforms, in the same fashion, the thermal sensations into energizing transfers, into dynamic emotions. Cet article porte sur la construction de l’éthos de Donald Trump dans l’interview diffusée le 2 juin 2024 sur la chaine nationale américaine _Fox News_. Cette interview fait suite à la condamnation de l’ancien président américain le 30 mai 2024 à New-York dans l’affaire Stormy Daniels. Notre étude qualitative et quantitative rend compte de la façon dont Donald Trump procède à une forme de construction éthotique valorisée en et par le discours. L’étude de procédés linguistiques, rhétoriques, stylistiques, argumentatifs ou interactionnels, (...) analysés comme figure de proue du style de Donald Trump montre comment le candidat véhicule une image héroïque, à laquelle une partie de l’électorat américain peut adhérer. Notre étude dévoile aussi que, en toile de fond, sont utilisés des lexèmes, des vocables favorisant un effet émotionnel fort, étant articulés autour d’émotions négatives (la peur, la méfiance, le doute, le danger, etc) pour mieux promouvoir son rôle héroïque face à la diplomatie am... ¿Cómo han evolucionado las ficciones sobre el narco desde el boom inicial del sub-género? Este artículo interroga el paso, en los productos audiovisuales, de una perspectiva masculina del conflicto, caracterizada por la popularidad de los héroes/villanos, hacia una perspectiva que llamamos femenina y que subraya la importancia de los cuidados ante la violencia del conflicto. Nuestro trabajo se concentra en cuatro largometrajes de ficción que tienen como trasfondo la guerra de las drogas: Vuelven (Issa López 2017), Sin señas particulares (Fernanda (...) Valadez 2020), Noche de fuego (Tatiana Huezo 2021) y La civil (Teodora Mihai 2021). En estas cuatro historias de mujeres, las directoras presentan las desapariciones forzadas como la cristalización de la violencia y la corrupción que se viven en México desde hace varias décadas y la busqueda que realizan los personajes principales se convierte en un periplo iniciático que transforma a las heroínas, extrayéndolas de su situación de subordinación. Psychosis is associated with distorted perceptions and deficient bottom-up learning such as classical fear conditioning. This has been interpreted as reflecting imprecise priors in low-level predictive coding systems. Paradoxically, overly strong beliefs, such as overvalued beliefs and delusions, are also present in psychosis-associated states. In line with this, research has suggested that patients with psychosis and associated phenotypes rely more on high-order priors to interpret perceptual input. In this behavioural and fMRI study we studied two types of fear learning, i.e., (...) instructed fear learning mediated by verbal suggestions about fear contingencies and classical fear conditioning mediated by low level associative learning, in delusion proneness—a trait in healthy individuals linked to psychotic disorders. Subjects were shown four faces out of which two were coupled with an aversive stimulation while two were not in a fear conditioning procedure. Before the conditioning, subjects were informed about the contingencies for two of the faces of each type, while no information was given for the two other faces. We could thereby study the effect of both classical fear conditioning and instructed fear learning. Our main outcome variable was evaluative rating of the faces. Simultaneously, fMRI-measurements were performed to study underlying mechanisms. We postulated that instructed fear learning, measured with evaluative ratings, is stronger in psychosis-related phenotypes, in contrast to classical fear conditioning that has repeatedly been shown to be weaker in these groups. In line with our hypothesis, we observed significantly larger instructed fear learning on a behavioural level in delusion-prone individuals compared to non-delusion-prone subjects. Instructed fear learning was associated with a bilateral activation of lateral orbitofrontal cortex that did not differ significantly between groups. However, delusion-prone subjects showed a stronger functional connectivity between right lateral orbitofrontal cortex and regions processing fear and pain. Our results suggest that psychosis-related states are associated with a strong instructed fear learning in addition to previously reported weak classical fear conditioning. Given the similarity between nocebo paradigms and instructed fear learning, our results also have an impact on understanding why nocebo effects differ between individuals. (shrink)

The novelty-seeking model suggests that curiosity and creativity originate from novelty processes. However, different types of novelty exist, each with distinctive relationships with memory, which potentially influence curiosity and creativity in distinct ways. We thus propose expanding the NSM model to consider these different novelty types and their specific involvement in creativity.

This paper primarily explores the ethical debate surrounding the use of memory erasure for therapeutic ends. It argues that procedures such as kinase inhibition therapy, which can entail memory erasure in the individual, incur a high cost in terms of the integrity of our individual identities, thus jeopardizing our claim to individual rights and accountability. Therefore, we should reserve such therapies for the extreme cases in which the procedures have the potential to actually restore a person’s autonomy. Stiegler’s political philosophy of time-consciousness reveals three concomitants urgencies: human memory is conditioned by industrial supplements that are increasingly disruptive, capitalism has produced an entropic condition where life on earth is threaten by toxic systems, the deployment of technologies of spirits has striped individuals of their psychic and collective individuation. Outre les constats sur la crise du gouvernement représentatif insistant sur la défiance des citoyens, la crise climatique est perçue comme révélant l’impuissance de cette forme politique basée sur l’élection. Des voix s’élèvent dans le champ académique, militant et politique, en faveur de l’utilisation de mini-publics tirés au sort pour résoudre divers enjeux politiques, en particulier le changement climatique. Si les assemblées citoyennes sur le climat se sont récemment multipliées, il convient d’examiner leur précurseur : l’assemblée citoyenne irlandaise (ACI). Ce (...) dispositif délibératif a certes proposé la légalisation de l’avortement en 2017, approuvée par référendum, mais il a également traité du climat. Grâce à une longue étude de terrain, on analyse les délibérations de l’ACI sur le climat, et notamment la tension entre pouvoir des citoyens participants et contrôle par les organisateurs et experts. Puis, on comparera le cas irlandais à la Convention Citoyenne pour le Climat française, qui a également fait l’objet d’une étude de terrain intégrale. (shrink)

Le projet de recherche collaborative intitulé TRACS ( Transatlantic Cultures. Cultural Histories of the Atlantic World 18th – 21st Centuries ) vise à élaborer une plate-forme numérique encyclopédique afin de mettre en œuvre une histoire des circulations culturelles dans l’espace atlantique à l’époque contemporaine dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire associant historiens, anthropologues, sociologues, géographes, musicologues, spécialistes de littérature, d’arts, de théâtre ou encore de cinéma. Si le premier objectif du projet est de décrypter l’économie complexe des échanges entre l’Europe, l’Afrique et (...) les Amériques entre la fin du XVIII et le début du XXI siècles en partant du postulat selon lequel le monde atlantique a été un laboratoire privilégié de la mondialisation culturelle, il propose également une réflexion sur les processus identitaires et les frontières qui ont contribué à l’établissement et à la reconfiguration des grandes aires culturelles, ainsi que sur les régimes circulatoires des pratiques, des savoirs et des représentations d’une rive à l’autre de l’océan sur le temps long des 250 dernières années. Pour mener à bien notre démonstration, nous aborderons trois aspects essentiels : le premier tient à la définition même de l’espace atlantique, à ses lignes de forces et à ses frontières ; le second concerne les temporalités de son histoire, longtemps restreinte à l’époque moderne ; le troisième relève des objets étudiés et de la spécificité de l’histoire culturelle, conçue comme une histoire sociale des représentations, des pratiques et des productions symboliques, face à des approches de nature géopolitique et aux Cultural Studies. Ethics has powerful teeth, but these are barely being used in the ethics of AI today – it is no wonder the ethics of AI is then blamed for having no teeth. This article argues that ‘ethics’ in the current AI ethics field is largely ineffective, trapped in an ‘ethical principles’ approach and as such particularly prone to manipulation, especially by industry actors. Using ethics as a substitute for law risks its abuse and misuse. This significantly limits what ethics can (...) achieve and is a great loss to the AI field and its impacts on individuals and society. This article discusses these risks and then highlights the teeth of ethics and the essential value they can – and should – bring to AI ethics now. (shrink)

Ce numéro spécial de La Deleuziana est né d’une indignation à l’encontre de notre situation politique actuelle dans laquelle notre responsabilité d’êtres vivants partageant une planète commune est en proie à un manque cruel de soin à l’égard des autres. La notion de désir comme puissance de vie et force de création à la source de toute invention possible ainsi que de renouvellement de l’ordre établi s’est vite imposée à nous comme une nécessité théorique et pratique. Pourtant, le désir est (...) ce qui aujourd’hui semble aller le moins de soi. Tantôt confisqué par une société de consommation à outrance, relayée par des slogans vulgaires et le jeu des rencontres en ligne, tantôt dévoré par un état généralisé de dépression et d’anxiété qui dégénère dans la passivité voire l’indifférence, le désir prend de plus en plus la forme des personnages beckettiens épuisés. Saisi par l’évidence de sa palpable inefficacité tant théorique que pratique, ce numéro se donne pour objectif de réinvestir la question du désir afin de renouveler la question du vivre ensemble. L’intention initiale était d’analyser l’évolution des pratiques théoriques sur le désir en philosophie contemporaine et en psychanalyse avec une attention particulière portée aux transformations subjectives collectives opérées par les nouvelles technologies numériques. Il s’agissait d’ouvrir la voie à une compréhension du désir qui ne soit plus conçu comme une image (le désir d’être et ses structures d’identifications), ni comme un objet (le désir d’avoir et ses structures d’objectification), mais comme un milieu (le désir et ses dynamiques de relation). En effet, à la suite de Deleuze, nous posons que le désir est intransitif : il ne s’agit pas du désir de quelque chose (génitif objectif), ni du désir de quelqu’un (génitif subjectif). Le désir est un processus qui possède une existence empirique autonome et se réalise dans des entités concrètes. Ce sont ces entités qui bouleversent les milieux du désir. La question devient de savoir ce que serait un milieu désiré, désirant et désirable afin de comprendre ce qui peuple nos modalités d'être au monde. (shrink)

To Stiegler’s notion of pansable (curable), one might also need to add that penser (to think) relates to the Latin penso, the frequentative of pendo, to hang, suspend. The pansable (that which can be healed) is as much the pensable (that which can be thought) and the suspensible (that which can be hung). Stiegler’s final act revealed that which was always already there: an unhealed pharmacological shadow that preceded him. While he entered philosophy with the argument of technics as the (...) impensé (unthought) of continental philosophy, he concluded in a final acting out, an impansable (uncurable) that ended his life. He, who believed that life is about cultivating rêveries and protentions capable of promise. Protention means both a capacity to invent and an ability to project oneself into the future through the practice of imagination and desire. He, who pondered about the retentions we have and the various forms of memory they take, and how to make them become the true modes of being-in-the-world. I know now that his fatal transgression is as much an accident as a departure, an emotional ceasefire and a bifurcative ending. Somehow, he found a way to remain faithful to the originary beginning of his thinking in act. (shrink)

This issue is devoted to a nootechnics of the digital, which defines the importance given to both life and thought in the technogenesis of objects (both artefac- tual and technical). If the ontogenesis once resided in the relation between form and matter, we are now moving toward the question of a nootechno- genesis that resides in the relation between noos and techné. Nootechnogene- sis does not separate the emergence of technics and life. Instead, it offers a mode for thinking about (...) the genesis of both noos (intuition, intelligence, flair, intention) and techné (technique, craft, art) as the condition and the conse- quence of our cultural condition, of our ability to mediate and negotiate dif- ferent realms of reality. Nootechnics refers to the psycho-cultural practices of care and empowerment. It supposes the wiring of a transductive unity between beings and technical objects. This transductive unity is what allows noos and techné to operate in a relational mediation toward one another and to restructure the dynamic relations between elements within a system. For that matter, nootechnics refers to care and empowerment as structural oper- ations; they promote a relational ontology of mediation needed to implement changes. (shrink)

Video-objects are often discussed in terms of their ability to reflect upon the speed of our narcissistic culture, but less acknowledged is video’s agency to perform electronic events outside of human experience. This article engages in scholarship interested in the space of video operations where lived and imagined, real and virtual phenomena are experienced at the threshold of perception. Bringing into this conversation a discussion of The Waves (2003), an interactive installation by video pioneer and media critic Thierry Kuntzel, the (...) article moves away from the time/movement nexus grounded in a filmic understanding of the image to position video-memory as the emergence of a volume of time. Different from the time-image and movement-image of cinema, the volume-image of video defines a mode of engaging with multiple temporalities within the continuum of the video itself. Constituted progressively through layers of ever-changing signal processes, the volume-image of video technology is an open field, a transductive zone where multiple intensities create new representational rhythms, which disrupt the durational model of time so often attached to human experience. The battlefield of the Anthropocene is a tragic one. It begins at the end. It emerges out of melancholy, in the locality of being not-dead-yet. As an Epoch dating the human impact on earth, the Anthropocene looks like a graveyard-to-come, one in which the story of humankind is writing its own epitaph in real time. The tragedy of our moment, or the tragic moment of our action means having to act despite knowing it is too late, searching for hope in (...) the dark. This tragedy produces the sensation that humankind must necessarily face its own limits. And these limits are telling a story that is not a happy one: we cannot keep up with the pace of such an entropic boneyard. When it comes to the massive eradications of people and species, no one can justify the feelings of sympathy that proliferate against a back- ground of intellectual numbness. The battlefield of the Anthropocene is one that demands action. (shrink)

This paper introduces the concept of “Participatory Convergence” as a framework to meet grand social-ecological challenges. Participatory Convergence combines the principles of Convergence Research with Participatory Action Research (PAR), offering a novel approach to tackling complex societal problems. Convergence Research seeks to foster high-level integration between diverse disciplines to address multifaceted issues, emphasizing systems thinking and solutions orientation; however, existing literature falls short in providing practical models for the deep integration of diverse disciplines, community partners, and community members. This paper (...) aims to bridge these gaps by integrating Convergence Research with PAR. We illustrate the application of Participatory Convergence with a case study: the “Action for Water Equity” project, focusing on water challenges faced by communities in U.S. colonias along the U.S.–Mexico border. The Action for Water Equity project is a practical example of how Participatory Convergence can be applied to tackle pressing challenges while embracing diversity, inclusivity, and adaptability. This approach holds the potential to facilitate comprehensive solutions for global challenges and foster meaningful change through interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and a commitment to sustainability and equity. With the concept of the technical image, Flusser indicates a historical shift in the structure of Western society.1 Technical images, as found in photographs, films, videos, computer terminals, and television screens, designate images produced by an apparatus designed to create programmed information. Contrary to traditional images which carry significance through representation as seen in paintings, technical images are surfaces that operate according to “inverted vectors of meaning.”2 The meaning of a technical image is not found in what the image signifies (...) but in what it projects. In other words, technical images are less about the representation of the world and more about modeling the subject’s relation to and vision of reality. As such, technical images are “instructional programs” designed to inculcate significance, shape behavior, and direct subjects on how to make sense of the world.3 The surfaces of technical images move away from a mimetic representation of the real to inscribe concepts as connotative, as opposed to denotative, forms of signification. However, traditional images and technical images are not entirely disconnected from one another. Together they shape the posthistorical phase of humanity, a phase in which humans’ relationship to reality is increasingly conditioned and modulated by embedded codification. This codification is produced by apparatuses that calculate probability. These apparatuses are opaque because they no longer require the knowledge of their operation by the subject that handles them. In other words: traditional images are “observations of objects,” while technical images are “computation of concepts.”4. (shrink)

La réalité ne suffit plus, il faut l’augmenter ! Tel un slogan qui sonnerait le glas de l’ennui, cette phrase s’inscrit au cœur du spectacle de la plasticienne américaine Claudia Hart, figure centrale des nouvelles expérimentations entre scène interactive, computer-art et performance aux États-Unis. Dans The Alices (Walking), un spectacle créé en collaboration avec le compositeur Edmond Campion et présenté pour la première fois en 2014 au Eyebeam Center for Art + Technology de New York, il s’agit de questionner les (...) mutations du visuel et de l’écrit dans un monde de plus en plus perçu à travers le filtre des technologies digitales. Dans ce spectacle aux allures de défilé de mode, ces mutations prennent la forme de costumes « site internet » (website dresses). Cinq acteurs défilent sur le plateau et circulent entre porte-manteaux vides et chaises momentanément occupées par des spectateurs invités à venir décrypter les codes incrustés dans la matière plastique des costumes. Les spectateurs se connectent à une application via leur téléphone ou tablette et scannent les costumes lorsque les acteurs défilent devant eux. Ces costumes sont de formes sculpturales diverses, à géométrie et couleurs variables, dans lesquelles des codes informatiques ont été incrustés. Ces codes détiennent du contenu visuel (textes et images en mouvement) qui n’est accessible qu’à travers un écran programmé pour déchiffrer en réseau les codes numériques de ces robes du futur. To speak about revolution, either as an event or as a concept, must appear presumptuous at a moment when racial discrimination, fascist politics, and the totalitarian war against women and minorities are amplified by a market economy based on systemic division. In the digital present, the systematization of division is magnified by newly algorithmic structures of machinic capitalism. In that context, the more the intellect aims to grasp the depth of revolutionary actions, the less the latter seem to make sense. (...) In other words, both the failure and the promise of revolution have created a modern paradigm to address the political struggles of our times, one that is cyclically repeating itself to challenge the limits of humankind. And yet, one can always find reasons to interrogate the symptoms of revolutionary tragedies that proliferate against a background of intellectual numbness. (shrink)
