    „Klarere Spiegel des Göttlichen“ – Plutarch und die Tiere.Angela Pabst - 2019 - Millennium 16 (1):75-92.
This paper deals with one of Plutarch’s favourite subjects - the relation between human beings and animals. In order to gain new insight into this topic, a three-step approach is chosen: First, the paper investigates some of the essential ideas concerning animals (their soul, their emotions and intellectual capacities) to be found in Plutarch’s work and the vocabulary he employs. Secondly, the paper focuses on Plutarch’s unique style of writing and his skillful use of the Socratic method to guide his (...)

The Role of Social Isolation and the Development of Depression: A Comparison of the Widowed and Married Oldest Old in Germany.Franziska Förster, Melanie Luppa, Alexander Pabst, Kathrin Heser, Luca Kleineidam, Angela Fuchs, Michael Pentzek, Hanna Kaduszkiewicz, Carolin van der Leeden, André Hajek, Hans-Helmut König, Anke Oey, Birgitt Wiese, Edelgard Mösch, Dagmar Weeg, Siegfried Weyerer, Jochen Werle, Wolfgang Maier, Martin Scherer, Michael Wagner & Steffi G. Riedel-Heller - 2021 - International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 18 (13):6986.
Widowhood is common in old age, can be accompanied by serious health consequences and is often linked to substantial changes in social network. Little is known about the impact of social isolation on the development of depressive symptoms over time taking widowhood into account. We provide results from the follow-up 5 to follow-up 9 from the longitudinal study AgeCoDe and its follow-up study AgeQualiDe. Depression was measured with GDS-15 and social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6). (...)

  4. Optimality modeling in a suboptimal world.Angela Potochnik - 2009 - Biology and Philosophy 24 (2):183-197.
The fate of optimality modeling is typically linked to that of adaptationism: the two are thought to stand or fall together (Gould and Lewontin, Proc Relig Soc Lond 205:581–598, 1979; Orzack and Sober, Am Nat 143(3):361–380, 1994). I argue here that this is mistaken. The debate over adaptationism has tended to focus on one particular use of optimality models, which I refer to here as their strong use. The strong use of an optimality model involves the claim that selection is (...)

Feminism and Class Politics: A Round-Table Discussion.Elizabeth Wilson, Angela Weir, Anne Phillips, Beatrix Campbell, Michèle Barrett, Lynne Segal & Clara Connolly - 1986 - Feminist Review 23 (1):13-30.
In December 1984 Angela Weir and Elizabeth Wilson, two founding members of Feminist Review, published an article assessing contemporary British feminism and its relationship to the left and to class struggle. They suggested that the women's movement in general, and socialist-feminism in particular, had lost its former political sharpness. The academic focus of socialist-feminism has proved more interested in theorizing the ideological basis of sexual difference than the economic contradictions of capitalism. Meanwhile the conditions of working-class and black women (...)

An experience of displacement in corral.Ángela Parga León - 2020 - Alpha (Osorno) 50:374-383.

We agree with the author's working model, but we suggest that (a) the classical distinction between fast and slow processes as separable processes can be softened, and (b) human performance might result from an interplay between fast and slow processing and these processes may be mediated by systems that evolve to satisfy the need for operation in a complex environment.

L’opposto dell’obbedienza. Pratiche politiche di ribellione, resistenza, sottrazione.Angela de Benedictis & Raffaele Laudani - 2014 - Scienza and Politica.

O momento qualquer suspende a ordem corriqueira do tempo, (...)

Lei Áurea no Brasil, festas em Lagos (Nigéria): identidade e representação.Angela Fileno Da Silva - 2016 - Odeere 1 (1).

Two Theories of Christian Virtue.Angela McKay Knobel - 2010 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 84 (3):599-618.
In this paper, I examine two different ways of understanding Aquinas’s account of the infused and acquired virtues. I argue that one of these ways, at least asit is commonly described, is unable to accommodate one of Aquinas’s most central claims about the difference between the infused and acquired virtues.

Resting state brain subnetwork relates to prosociality and compassion in adolescents.Benjamin S. Sipes, Angela Jakary, Yi Li, Jeffrey E. Max, Tony T. Yang & Olga Tymofiyeva - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Adolescence is a crucial time for social development, especially for helping and compassionate behaviors; yet brain networks involved in adolescent prosociality and compassion currently remain underexplored. Here, we sought to evaluate a recently proposed domain-general developmental network model of prosocial cognition by relating adolescent functional and structural brain networks with prosocial and compassionate disposition. We acquired resting state fMRI and diffusion MRI from 95 adolescents along with self-report questionnaires assessing prosociality and compassion. We then applied the Network-Based Statistic to inductively (...)

Margaret Pabst Battin has established a reputation as one of the top philosophers working in bioethics today. This work is a sequel to Battin's 1994 volume The Least Worst Death. The last ten years have seen fast-moving developments in end-of-life issues, from the legalization of physician-assisted suicide in Oregon and the Netherlands, to a furor over proposed restrictions of scheduled drugs used for causing death, and the development of "NuTech" methods of assistance in dying. Battin's new collection covers a (...)

From Civil to Political Economy: Adam Smith’s Theological Debt.Adrian Pabst - 2011 - In Paul Oslington (ed.), Adam Smith as theologian. New York: Routledge.
The present essay contends that progressive readings of Smith ignore the influence of theological concepts and religious ideas on his work, notably three distinct strands: first, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century natural theology; second, Jansenist Augustinianism; third, Stoic arguments of theodicy. Taken together, these theological elements help explain why Smith’s moral philosophy and political economy intensifies the secular early modern and Enlightenment idea that the Fall brought about ‘radical evil’ and a ‘fatherless world’ in need of permanent divine intervention. As such, Smith (...)

The Primacy of Relation over Substance and the Recovery of a Theological Metaphysics.Adrian Pabst - 2007 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 81 (4):553-578.
This essay concerns the problem of individuation in metaphysics in relation to the question of individuality in politics. It rejects the assumption in muchof ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy and theology that unity and diversity are opposed and that this opposition produces conflict and violence. Theproposed alternative is a metaphysics and politics of relationality. This alternative is not so much indebted to Aristotle, but instead goes back to Platonist metaphysics and its transformation by Augustine and Boethius. By privileging substance over (...)

ExcerptIntroduction Much of nineteenth- and twentieth-century philosophy proclaimed the end the metaphysics and the death of God. The German, French, and English strands of the Enlightenment were united in their suspicion of metaphysical theism. Figures as diverse as Comte, Marx, Spencer, Nietzsche, and Russell defended the absolute autonomy of atheist reason against religious faith. Following the rise of partisan ideologies that terrorized the West from 1789 to 1989, the downfall of the Soviet empire appeared to herald the “end of history” (...)
