The selfseeker.Anthony Hyman - 2007 - Christow, Exeter: Teignvalley Press.
The Selfseeker presents a coherent organic and dialectical epistemology to underpin the science of the environmental movement. Stressing the subjective as well as the objective, empsychon theory returns to the ancient Greek approach which was forgotten after Plato. At once organic and rigorously scientific, The Selfseeker is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in environmental questions and who cares for the future of planet Earth.

Occlusion shapes and sizes in a theory of depiction.Anthony A. Derksen - 2004 - British Journal of Aesthetics 44 (4):319-341.
John Hyman has used the objective character of occlusion shapes and of relative occlusion sizes to develop a more objective approach both in the analysis of linear perspective and in the theory of depiction. To this end Hyman develops two Occlusion Principles, plus an Aperture Colour Principle (which I do not discuss), which, together with our knowledge of appearances, are supposed to tell us what a picture depicts. I argue that Hyman underestimates the crucial role of the (...)

Historically, many Christians have understood God’s transcendence to imply God’s properties categorically differ from any created properties. For multiple historical figures, a problem arose for religious language: how can one talk of God at all if none of our predicates apply to God? What are we to make of creeds and Biblical passages that seem to predicate creaturely properties, such as goodness and wisdom, of God? Thomas Aquinas offered a solution: God is to be spoken of only through analogy (the (...)

Automatic preference for white americans: Eliminating the familiarity explanation.Anthony Greenwald - manuscript
Using the Implicit Association Test (IAT), recent experiments have demonstrated a strong and automatic positive evaluation of White Americans and a relatively negative evaluation of African Americans. Interpretations of this finding as revealing pro-White attitudes rest critically on tests of alternative interpretations, the most obvious one being perceivers’ greater familiarity with stimuli representing White Americans. The reported experiment demonstrated that positive attributes were more strongly associated with White than Black Americans even when (a) pictures of equally unfamiliar Black and White (...)

    Single-World Theory of the Extended Wigner’s Friend Experiment.Anthony Sudbery - 2017 - Foundations of Physics 47 (5):658-669.
Frauchiger and Renner have recently claimed to prove that “Single-world interpretations of quantum theory cannot be self-consistent”. This is contradicted by a construction due to Bell, inspired by Bohmian mechanics, which shows that any quantum system can be modelled in such a way that there is only one “world” at any time, but the predictions of quantum theory are reproduced. This Bell–Bohmian theory is applied to the experiment proposed by Frauchiger and Renner, and their argument is critically examined. It is (...)

How the Natural Interpretation of QM Avoids the Recent No-Go Theorem.Anthony Rizzi - 2020 - Foundations of Physics 50 (3):204-215.
A recent no-go theorem gives an extension of the Wigner’s Friend argument that purports to prove the “Quantum theory cannot consistently describe the use of itself.” The argument is complex and thought provoking, but fails in a straightforward way if one treats QM as a statistical theory in the most fundamental sense, i.e. if one applies the so-called ensemble interpretation. This explanation is given here at an undergraduate level, which can be edifying for experts and students alike. A recent paper (...)

Transcultural and Transnational Communication Principles? Suggestions for Minimum and Maximum Values as a Common Ground.Anthony Löwstedt & Natalia Hatarova - 2024 - Journal of Media Ethics 39 (2):85-98.
Based on the communication ethics of Ptahhotep and other inclusivist communication value systems, including several additional non-Western (Confucian, Buddhist, Aborigine, Cree, San, Māori, Ubuntu, and Islamic) as well as Western ones (Stoic, Christian, Kantian, socialist, liberal, and journalistic), we propose seven principles as common ground for the future regulation of media communication on a global scale. All seven are formulated in a manner similar to Ptahhotep’s, providing a flexible range of norms allowing, for example, hate speech to be dealt with (...)

  36. Educating angels: teaching for the pursuit of happiness.Anthony Armstrong - 2013 - Marion, Michigan: Parkhurst Brothers Publishers.
School reform and accountability tests have been hotly debated for decades, but the goal of reform and accountability has not. Most agree that the main problem with contemporary education is that it fails to adequately prepare students with the "21st century skills" needed to find jobs and promote national competitiveness in the global economy. Tony Armstrong challenges both the morality and the consequences of pushing this purpose of education. He says it is immoral because it neglects our children's deepest aspiration--happiness--and (...)

“Women’s Work”: Welfare State Spending and the Gendered and Classed Dimensions of Unpaid Care.Anthony Kevins & Naomi Lightman - 2021 - Gender and Society 35 (5):778-805.
This study is the first to explicitly assess the connections between welfare state spending and the gendered and classed dimensions of unpaid care work across 29 European nations. Our research uses multi-level model analysis of European Quality of Life Survey data, examining childcare and housework burdens for people living with at least one child under the age of 18. Two key findings emerge: First, by disaggregating different types of unpaid care work, we find that childcare provision is more gendered than (...)

Ranking comment sorting policies in online debates.Anthony P. Young, Sagar Joglekar, Gioia Boschi & Nishanth Sastry - 2021 - Argument and Computation 12 (2):265-285.
Online debates typically possess a large number of argumentative comments. Most readers who would like to see which comments are winning arguments often only read a part of the debate. Many platforms that host such debates allow for the comments to be sorted, say from the earliest to latest. How can argumentation theory be used to evaluate the effectiveness of such policies of sorting comments, in terms of the actually winning arguments displayed to a reader who may not have read (...)

Mines, mountains, and the making of a vertical consciousness in Germany ca. 1800.Patrick Anthony - 2020 - Centaurus 62 (4):612-630.
The insight that scientific theories are “practice-laden” has animated scholarship in the history of science for nearly three decades. This article examines a style of geographical thought that was, I argue, movement-laden. The thought-style in question has been described as a “vertical consciousness that engulfed science in the early nineteenth century,” and is closely associated with the geographical vision of Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859). Humboldt’s science spanned nature’s horizontal and vertical axes, from Saxon mines to Andean summits, and from the (...)
