In this article, we aim to evaluate the role of robots’ personality-driven behavioural patterns on users’ intention to use in an entertainment scenario. Toward such a goal, we designed two personalities: one introverted with an empathic and self-comparative interaction style, and the other extroverted with a provocative and other-comparative interaction style. To evaluate the proposed technology acceptance model, we conducted an experiment (N = 209) at a public venue where users were requested to play a game with the support of (...) the TIAGo robot. Our findings show that the robot personality affects the acceptance model and three relevant drivers: perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, and social influence. The extroverted robot was perceived as more useful than the introverted, and participants who interacted with it were faster at solving the game. On the other hand, the introverted robot was perceived as more enjoyable but less useful than the extroverted, and participants who interacted with it made fewer mistakes. Taken together, these findings support the importance of designing proper robot personalities in influencing users’ acceptance, featuring that a given style can elicit a different driver of acceptance. Revonsuo proposed an intriguing and detailed evolutionary theory of dreams which stipulates that the biological function of dreaming is to simulate threatening events and to rehearse threat avoidance behaviors. The goal of the present study was to test this theory using a sample of 212 recurrent dreams that was scored using a slightly expanded version of the DreamThreat rating scale. Six of the eight hypotheses tested were supported. Among the positive findings, 66% of the recurrent dream reports contained one or (...) more threats, the threats tended to be dangerous and aimed at the dreamer, and when facing a threat, the dreamer tended to take defensive or evasive actions that were possible and reasonable. However, less than 15% of the recurrent dreams depicted realistic and probable situations critical for one’s physical survival or reproductive success and the dreamer rarely succeeded in fleeing the threat despite important and appropriate efforts. The findings thus provide mixed support for the threat simulation theory. (shrink)

The literatures on bounded and ecological rationality are built on adaptationism—and its associated modular, cognitivist and computational paradigm—that does not address or explain the evolutionary origins of rationality. We argue that the adaptive mechanisms of evolution are not sufficient for explaining human rationality, and we posit that human rationality presents exaptive origins, where exaptations are traits evolved for other functions or no function at all, and later co-opted for new uses. We propose an embodied reconceptualization of rationality—embodied rationality—based on the (...) reuse of the perception-action system, where many neural processes involved in the control of the sensory-motor system, salient in ancestral environments have been later co-opted to create—by tinkering—high-level reasoning processes, employed in civilized niches. Before and after the enormous success of his theory, this principle was the subject of studies and discussions. Still today, after more than one century, the debate about its interpretation, application and generalization is very fertile. Las escápulas de bóvido inscritas con alifatos o basmala son hallazgos relativamente frecuentes en la arqueología medieval de la Península Ibérica. En este artículo se dan a conocer cuatro escápulas de bóvido inéditas y se presentan otras diez que ya habían sido publicadas por otros autores, a menudo consideradas como tablillas para la enseñanza de la escritura. Se propone una nueva interpretación de estas escápulas inscritas en árabe como amuletos, hipotéticamente vinculados a prácticas mágicas relacionadas con la protección de reservas (...) de grano a largo plazo en silos. Significant individual differences exist in dream recall frequency but some variance is likely attributable to instrument choice in measuring DRF. Three hundred and fifty eight participants estimated their weekly DRF and recorded their dreams in either a narrative log or checklist log for 2–5 weeks. There was an early peak in DRF within the first week of both types of prospective logs after which DRF remained relatively stable. Although the two groups did not differ in their estimated DRF, significantly fewer (...) dreams were reported per week on the narrative logs and only checklist logs yielded significantly higher DRF than participants’ questionnaire estimates. The interactions between DRF measures did not vary across groups with low, medium or high baseline levels of DRF. Keeping a dream log does not necessarily increase DRF and narrative logs’ time consuming nature can impact subjects’ motivation to report all of their dreams over time. (shrink)

A luta por reconhecimento é uma das questões centrais do debate político contemporâneo. Diversos pensadores transformaram esta temática no centro de suas reflexões. No entanto, este debate tem suas origens na obra do pensador Maquiavel. A perspectiva política de Maquiavel, que envolve a questão do reconhecimento, foi fundamental no debate travado entre os pensadores contratualistas como Hobbes, Locke e Rousseau. Assim, como para Maquiavel, o tema da luta por reconhecimento é fundamental para Rousseau. É inegável a influência de Maquiavel sobre (...) os contratualistas, incluindo o pensador genebrino e seu pensamento em torno da luta por reconhecimento. Neste sentido, Rousseau se encontra no conjunto dos leitores de Maquiavel. Desta forma, o texto se debruça sobre o tema da luta pelo reconhecimento na obra de Maquiavel e os reflexos que se desdobram na obra de Rousseau. (shrink)

Although Ejzenštejn never writes about the ontology of cinema as such, the fundamental traits of such an ontology may be reconstructed by analysing some of the recurrent ideas that reappear throughout his large body of writings, from the essays on montage written during the 1920s, to the unfinished book projects of Metod (1932-48), Montage (1937), Nonindifferent Nature (1945-47), all the way up to the still unpublished notes for a General History of Cinema which he wrote in 1947-48. Throughout these writings (...) cinema emerges as a medium based on montage whose goal is that of activating, emotionally and intellectually, the spectator. In order to pursue this goal, all the elements of the cinematic dispositif may be modified, and the most effective forms of montage disseminated throughout the history of the arts have to be located, analyzed, and taken as examples for the cinema of the future. Cinema thus emerges as a medium which is at the same time unstable (since its features may be modified at will) and diffused (since the principle of montage does not constitute its medium specificity but is rather a principle which manifests itself throughout the entire spectrum of media). Two justifications of backward induction (BI) in generic perfect information games are formulated using Bonanno's (1992; Theory and Decision 33, 153) belief systems. The first justification concerns the BI strategy profile and is based on selecting a set of rational belief systems from which players have to choose their belief functions. The second justification concerns the BI path of play and is based on a sequential deletion of nodes that are inconsistent with the choice of rational belief functions.

La determinación del significado filosófico de la «religión» es una tarea compleja, que debe considerar lo histórico, lo descriptivo y lo crítico, tratando de abarcar los distintos elementos implicados en un concepto tan saturado de matices. El examen de algunas manifestaciones prehistóricas, como las pinturas rupestres, cuyo sentido determinado posiblemente se nos escape para siempre, puede servir paradójicamente como vía de acceso a algunos elementos constitutivos de lo religioso, precisamente situados más allá de su concreción cultural.

El presente articulo intenta determinar las razones por las que el santuario de Sant Miquel de Llíria, uno de los más importantes de la actual provincia de Valencia, se consagró al arcàngel guerrero. Se estudia para ello la historia de su culto en Occidente, haciendo hincapié en aspectos como su relación con los lugares elevados y la frecuente proximidad de sus santuarios con aquellos dedicados a la Virgen. Atenderemos también a aspectos fundamentales del contexto histórico, como los movimientos de renovación (...) espiritual medievales, la influencia del médico y teólogo Arnau de Vilanova en la Valencia de principios del siglo XIV y las profecías escatológicas vinculadas a la llegada del Anticristo.
