Alors qu'il affirme, dans ses Souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse, qu'il serait "arrivé à plusieurs des résultats de Darwin" s'il s'était consacré à ces sciences, rien n'en transparaît dans ses vastes sommes historiennes : il faut remonter à sa formation. Figure fondatrice de la classification des sciences entre "sciences de l'humanité" et "sciences de la nature", Renan est un savant attentif au dialogue entre les disciplines, (...) dont la différenciation est en cours au XIXe siècle. Les sciences naturelles sont pour lui un réservoir méthodologique, qui le conduit à se faire, sur le modèle de l'anatomie et de l'embryogénie comparées, un historien des origines, auxquelles il remonte par analogie et induction. Le modèle de pensée affleure dans des images naturalistes, et questionne le statut du texte écrit par l'historien, nourri de conjectures et d'hypothèses. This study aimed at providing evidence that prior knowledge and its organization prompted either through pictures alone, pictures and associated words, words only have different impacts on several components of text produced by fourth graders. The results showed that the semantic relatedness affected three dependent measures: prompt words recalled, coherence and quality of texts. The nature of the prompts impacted on planning and translating processes. Findings, instructional applications, limitations, and proposals for future research are discussed.

Three-to-five-year-old French children were asked to add or remove objects to or from linear displays. The hypothesis of a universal tendency to represent increasing number magnitudes from left to right led to predict a majority of manipulations at the right end of the rows, whatever children's hand laterality. Conversely, if numbers are not inherently associated with space, children were expected to favour laterality-consistent manipulations. The results showed a strong tendency to operate on the right end of the rows in right-handers, (...) but no preference in left-handers. These findings suggest that the task elicited a left-to-right oriented representation of magnitudes that counteracted laterality-related responses in left-handed children. The young age of children and the lack of a developmental trend towards right preference weaken the hypothesis of a cultural origin of this oriented representation. The possibility that our results are due to weaker brain lateralisation in left-handers compared to right-handers is addressed in Discussion section. (shrink)

This paper develops and explores a pedagogical innovation for integrating virtue theory into business students' basicunderstanding of general management. Eighty-seven students, in 20 groups, classified three managers' real-time videotaped activitiesaccording to an elaboration of Aristotle's cardinal virtues, Fayol's management functions, and Mintzberg's managerial roles. The study's empirical evidence suggests that, akin to Fayol's functions and Mintzberg's roles, Aristotle's virtues are also amenable to operationalization, reliable observation, and meaningful description of managerial behavior. The study provides an oft-called-for empirical basis for further (...) work in virtue theory as an appropriate conceptual framework for the study and practice of management. The results indicate that virtue theory may be used to re-conceive our fundamental understanding of management, alongside its capacity to weigh moral judgment upon it. implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
