Odysseus benefits from his stay on the island of Scheria in two crucial ways. The Phaeacians’ willingness to escort him home secures his physical return to Ithaca. Furthermore, a song performed by the bard Demodocus featuring Odysseus’ quarrel with Achilles helps him regain his identity as one of the foremost Achaean heroes. The second song, the hilarious tale of Ares and Aphrodite, in which the gods erupt in the famous Homeric laughter, then reawakens his emotional capacity for joy and cheerfulness. (...) Since this key function of the song does not appear to have been recognized up to now, it is at the center of the present article. Finally, the third song, in which Odysseus expects Demodocus to highlight his role as mastermind of the capture of Troy, instead draws attention to the horrible suffering of the Trojans and elicits uncontrollable tears on his part, thereby reconnecting him with the fundamental human emotions of compassion and pity. Taken as a whole, the narrative of Odysseus’ development during his stay among the Phaeacians appears to reflect an elaborate therapeutic concept, which is outlined in this article. (shrink)

Hartswick, ο οποίος, αντίθετα με την παραδοσιακή απόδοση στον Αλκαμένη, θεωρεί το πρωτότυπο του Άρη Borghese ως το λατρευτικό άγαλμα που στήθηκε στην Αθήνα προς τιμήν του Γάιου-Καίσαρα - «Νέου Άρη». Resumen El objetivo principal de este artículo es recrear la práctica de la hospitalidad en el contexto de la realidad migratoria actual, con la intención de aportar luz a la manera de gestionar la diversidad, de repensar la formación de identidad, de acercarnos a ciertas dinámicas políticas y últimamente de incentivar procesos de integración y cohesión social, especialmente en la vida de nuestros barrios. Para ello, el autor se adentra en las raíces bíblicas de la hospitalidad, aportando algunas claves para (...) entender esta virtud hoy. En nuestro mundo actual donde parecería ganar terreno la hostilidad sobre la hospitalidad, la práctica de la hospitalidad constituye un auténtico acto de resistencia.The main aim of this article is to recreate the practice of hospitality in the context of the current migratory reality, with the intention of bringing light to the way of managing diversity, of rethinking identity formation, of approaching certain political dynamics and lately to encourage processes of integration and social cohesion, especially in our vulnerable neighborhoods. For this purpose, the author delves into the biblical roots of hospitality, providing some clues to understand this virtue today. Aphrodite, tout en présidant à la sexualité et à l’éros, est une puissance divine aux multiples facettes exerçant aussi son action dans d’autres domaines. Depuis l’époque archaïque, Aphrodite et Arès constituent un couple bien établi au sein du panthéon de la Grèce ancienne. Cette association avec le dieu guerrier, attestée à la fois dans les récits mythiques et dans les cultes, se révèle solidaire d’autres données concernant les prérogatives politiques et militaires d’Aphrodite. L’examen de ce dossier nous invite à remettre (...) en question le portrait canonique d’Aphrodite en tant que « déesse de l’amour » et à repenser son rapport avec le dieu de la guerre autrement qu’en termes d’opposition complémentaire. Aphrodite, loin d’être exclue de l’univers de la guerre, y contribue efficacement et peut susciter elle-même « le désir de la bataille ». Aussi, à l’intersection du domaine d’Aphrodite avec celui d’Arès, des liens se nouent entre l’éros et la fureur guerrière.Aphrodite in the world of Ares. Elements for a dialogue between myth and cult. Aphrodite, the goddess governing sexuality and eros, is a deity with a large and multi-facetted sphere of action. Since archaic times, Aphrodite and Ares have constituted a well-established couple within the pantheon of ancient Greece. The association with the warrior god, attested both in myth and cult, is consistent with other evidence regarding Aphrodite’s political and military prerogatives. All of this prompts us to question Aphrodite’s canonical portrait as the “goddess of love” and to rethink her relationship with the “god of war” in terms other than those of complementary opposition. Aphrodite, far from being excluded from the world of war, contributes to it effectively in many different ways and is able to arouse “the desire for battle”. At the intersection of Aphrodite’s realm with that of Ares, links are woven between eros and fighting fervour. (shrink)

Abstract This paper reports the results obtained in an aid project designed to improve transport in the municipal area of Jocotán (Guatemala). The rural road network of an area occupied by indigenous people was analysed and a road chosen for repair using the labour-intensive method–something never done before in this area. The manpower required for the project was provided by the population that would benefit from the project; the involvement of outside contractors and businesses was avoided. All payment for labour (...) went into the pockets of the local people. The small earth movements made and the use of local materials guaranteed the project’s environmental sustainability, while the on-site training of the local community prepared its members for the continued maintenance of the road, thus investing the project with social sustainability. La crítica que ensaya Paulino Ares en el presente libro se basa en una exposición de la idea de materia en la historia de la filosofía.Encara las armas ideológicas del marxismo, las grandes tesis del materialismo marxista y el análisis de la dialéctica materialista.

La construcción de la identidad es un elemento constitutivo en el desarrollo vital de las personas y de los colectivos. En nuestro mundo actual globalizado y diverso, este elemento cobra una relevancia nuclear, más si cabe desde una mirada de los flujos migratorios y la integración social. Es en el día a día donde se juegan muchas de las dinámicas identitarias, en las que se entrelazan procesos de identidad personal y colectiva, tendencias más estáticas y dinámicas. El objetivo de este (...) trabajo es aportar luz a los modelos de integración y de cohesión social desde los procesos de construcción identitaria, en diálogo con el modelo de integración mixto. Para este fin, se ha presentado muy enriquecedor el dialogo entre el modelo de conductas mayoritarias y minoritarias de J. L. Segundo, el enfoque de las capacidades de A. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is the self-proclaimed inventor of the binary system and is considered as such by most historians of mathematics and/or mathematicians. Really though, we owe the groundwork of today’s computing not to Leibniz but to the Englishman Thomas Harriot and the Spaniard Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz, whom Leibniz plagiarized. This plagiarism has been identified on the basis of several facts: Caramuel’s work on the binary system is earlier than Leibniz’s, Leibniz was acquainted—both directly and indirectly—with Caramuel’s work and (...) In the centenary year of Turing’s birth, a lot of good things are sure to be written about him. But it is hard to find something new to write about Turing. This is the biggest merit of this article: it shows how von Neumann’s architecture of the modern computer is a serendipitous consequence of the universal Turing machine, built to solve a logical problem.
