In this paper we study the set of MV-algebras with given prime spectrum and we introduce the class of spectral MV-algebras. An MV-algebra is spectral if it is generated by the union of all its prime ideals (or proper ideals, or principal ideals, or maximal ideals). Among spectral MV-algebras, special attention is devoted to bipartite MV-algebras. An MV-algebra is bipartite if it admits an homomorphism onto the MV-algebra of two elements. We prove that both bipartite MV-algebras and spectral MV-algebras can (...) be finitely axiomatized in first order logic. We also prove that there is only, up to isomorphism, a set of MV-algebras with given prime spectrum. A further part of the paper is devoted to some relations between bipartite MV-algebras and their states. Recall that a state on an MV-algebra is a generalization of a probability measure on a Boolean algebra. Particular states are the states with Bayes’ property. We show that an MV-algebra admits a state with the Bayes’ property if and only if it is bipartite. (shrink)

This study investigates the possible effects of pre-term births and low birth weight on infant mortality rates (IMRs) over a 15-year period in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, based on surveys carried out in 1978/79 and 1994. The 1978/79 survey included 6750 births over a 12-month period and the 1994 survey 2846 births over a 4-month period. Infant deaths were retrieved monthly from the city register. Infant mortality rate decreased from 36·6 to 16·9 deaths per 1000 over 15 years. The decrease in (...) IMR was larger in the 25000·63); it increased to 0·57 (95% CI 0·350·97) when adjusted for length of gestation and other variables. The increase in pre-term births and low birth weight may have had, at most, a marginal effect on the IMR. Progress in the care of newborns may have decreased the mortality risk, but even mild pre-term birth still has an impact on infant mortality. There is room for further improvement in IMR by tackling the high rates of pre-term birth. (shrink)

Les troubles des conduites alimentaires surviennent le plus souvent à l’adolescence sur un fond d’organisation peu stable d’un moi en devenir, les symptômes focalisant sur l’alimentaire un déplacement de besoins affectifs, difficiles à assumer. Ils se constituent à partir d’une interaction complexe à la fois sur le plan individuel et sur le plan relationnel-familial. L’article présente une étude descriptive du fonctionnement intrapsychique individuel et des vécus familiaux du point de vue du père, de la mère et de la fille (diagnostiquée (...) anorexique), à partir d’entretiens et de l’application du Rorschach. Les données recueillies montrent des liens familiaux marqués par des sentiments d’intrusion et de profonde solitude. Le couple parental a montré peu de soutien mutuel et des difficultés chroniques. Père, mère et fille ont montré une fragilité psychique importante avec un moi peu protégé par une enveloppe solide et/ou souple. Les moments de crise de la vie familiale (les maladies, l’adolescence, le vieillissement) étaient perçus comme des tragédies. (shrink)

We derive the so-called Barbieri-Remiddi solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in QED in its general form and discuss its application to the bound-state energy spectrum.

Sociotype is a concept that allows a more comprehensive understanding about biosociology of undiagnosed rare diseases (URD). Sociotype is related to a genotype and a phenotype and it is an expression of the individual life world in society. In this paper, semiotic and hermeneutic analysis of papers published and selected about URD is developed. Te perspective followed in this research is aligned with the works of Barbieri and Peirce. Papers with the most social content have been selected and those (...) with a more biomedical content have been rejected. Te semiotics analysis has been divided in genotypic, phenotypic and sociotypic, and related to the hermeneutical perspective. It has been possible to understand the basis of semiotics elements of URD. Te general conclusion is that URD is a particular sociotype with a determined set of social characteristics. Tis paper opens research on the biosemiotic and hermeneutic perspective about URD. (shrink)

Significant individual differences exist in dream recall frequency but some variance is likely attributable to instrument choice in measuring DRF. Three hundred and fifty eight participants estimated their weekly DRF and recorded their dreams in either a narrative log or checklist log for 2–5 weeks. There was an early peak in DRF within the first week of both types of prospective logs after which DRF remained relatively stable. Although the two groups did not differ in their estimated DRF, significantly fewer (...) dreams were reported per week on the narrative logs and only checklist logs yielded significantly higher DRF than participants’ questionnaire estimates. The interactions between DRF measures did not vary across groups with low, medium or high baseline levels of DRF. Keeping a dream log does not necessarily increase DRF and narrative logs’ time consuming nature can impact subjects’ motivation to report all of their dreams over time. (shrink)

Ultimamente surgiram trabalhos que mostram que Kant fundamenta os direitos humanos a partir da liberdade inata, como único direito inato que o homem possui em virtude de sua humanidade. Contudo, a liberdade inata não permite justificar uma teoria dos direitos humanos porque constitui apenas um direito inato sobre o meu e o teu interior que possibilita a posse empírica, ademais, embora um direito humano seja inalienável, deve-se renunciar a ela para ingressar no estado civil; além disso, as quatro derivações analíticas (...) da liberdade inata geram consequências incompatíveis com uma doutrina dos direitos humanos, pois, enquanto direitos humanos se referem à todos, a igualdade inata e a independência inata se aplicam a um número restrito de pessoas; finalmente, há uma diferenciação na interpretação da fórmula da humanidade no direito e na ética, porque, subjetivamente, tratar a humanidade como um fim exige que o agente considere que o fim da humanidade seja o móbil de sua ação na ética, mas, no direito, exige-se apenas que o seu comportamento externo seja conforme o fim da humanidade, e, objetivamente, no direito, tratar a humanidade como um fim produz uma legislação penal contrária aos direitos humanos e o direito da humanidade exige que a integridade inata seja suspensa durante o período da condenação, ademais, esta diferenciação na ideia de humanidade torna-se explícita na imprejudicabilidade inata, pois, na ética, a mentira é a maior violação do dever da humanidade em sua pessoa, mas, no direito, somente viola o direito da humanidade se causar prejuízo para outros. Ethical dilemmas raised by the use of nanotechnology in medical practice can be viewed from several perspectives: religious spiritualist perspective, the perspective of human dignity (nanotechnologies can be thought of as an affront to human dignity), the issue of controversial choice. The article aims to expose some bioethical dilemmas in using synthetic biology and nanotechnologies. Nowadays is often brought into discussion the fact it is possible to appear in the future new human species resulted not via natural selection and evolution, (...) but through the demiurgic effect of technology development in areas such as: synthetic biology, genetics, neurobiology and neurosciences, prosthesis technology and not least of artificial intelligence research. We will also refer into this paper at the possible raised challenges to ethicists who are oriented towards an ethics of species. Those challenges are raised right from the dawn of a consciousness of species, a social construction generated by changes of the meaning of belonging to humanity. During our article we argue that medical technology, especially genetics, medical assisted human reproduction and not least synthetic biology, require a rethinking ethical meanings of applying those technologies in everyday practices.
