After reviewing the literature on current knowledge about consciousness in humans, we present a state-of-the art discussion on consciousness and related key concepts in animals. Obviously much fewer publications are available on non-human species than on humans, most of them relating to laboratory or wild animal species, and only few to livestock species. Human consciousness is by definition subjective and private. Animal consciousness is usually assessed through behavioural performance. Behaviour involves a wide array of cognitive processes that have to be (...) assessed separately using specific experimental protocols. Accordingly, several processes indicative of the presence of consciousness are discussed: perception and cognition, awareness of the bodily-self, self-related knowledge of the environment (including social environment). When available, specific examples are given in livestock species. Next, we review the existing evidence regarding neuronal correlates of consciousness, and emphasize the difficulty of linking aspects of consciousness to specific neural structures across the phyla because high-level cognitive abilities may have evolved independently along evolution. Several mammalian brain structures (cortex and midbrain) are involved in the manifestations of consciousness, while the equivalent functional structures for birds and fishes would likely be the pallium/tectum and midbrain. Caution is required before excluding consciousness in species not having the same brain structures as the mammalian ones as different neural architectures may mediate comparable processes. Finally, specific neurophysiological mechanisms appear to be strongly linked to the emergence of consciousness, namely neural synchrony and neural feedback. Considering the limited amount of data available and the few animal species studied so far, we conclude that different manifestations of consciousness can be observed in animals but that further refinement is still needed to characterize their level and content in each species. The ancient, interlinked questions about the role of chance in the living world and the origins of life, gained new relevance with the development of molecular biology in the twentieth century. In 1970, French molecular biologist Jacques Monod, joint winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, devoted a popular book on modern biology and its philosophical implications to these questions, which was quickly translated into English as _Chance and Necessity_. Nine years later, Belgian thermodynamicist Ilya Prigogine, (...) 1977 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, published a popular book on the history and philosophy of natural sciences with Belgian philosopher Isabelle Stengers. Translated into English under the title _Order out of Chaos_ and widely discussed, the whole book can be seen as a response to Monod on these biological and philosophical questions. This study will trace this intellectual controversy between two Nobel Prize winners defending two opposing scientific and philosophical visions of the living world, rooted in two different scientific disciplines. Spectacular developments in technology pose new questions for an old discipline like moral philosophy, as we have seen with all the questions regarding medical ethics. The physician-patient relationship is certainly not a new question, since it was already addressed in the Hippocratic oath, but we see that the new possibilities opened up by advances in medical technology place other questions before us. I would like to ask some ethical questions based on my professional activity as an engineer specialized in factory (...) design.The thesis which I will defend is the following: the scale of technological decisions has changed, both in space — they affect more people — and in time — they often have irreversible consequences. Nevertheless, those who make the decisions are human beings, and their actions can be criticized by moral philosophy1 just like any other human actions. Yet such a criticism cannot be carried out without the mediation of analytical tools adapted to the scope of such decisions, namely the various social sciences which describe the technical, political, economic and cultural dimensions of such decisions. This mediation should enable philosophers to discern the ethical consequences of these decisions, and the professionals to exercise their responsibility more effectively.To illustrate this thesis, I am going to speak not as a philosopher, but as an engineer, which means that I will discuss something concrete: the controversy surrounding the Superphoenix nuclear reactor, which has lasted thirty years and reached the highest levels of the French state. The controversy has lasted for thirty years because the nuclear installation at Creys Malville was conceived in the Sixties, constructed in the Seventies, started up in the Eighties, tested for a scientific project in the Nineties, and will doubtlessly be dismantled in the next decade.The controversy is a deeply political one, for the Superphoenix was conceived by the CEA in order to have French technology following the abandonment of the graphite-gas line of reactors. Construction was finalized in line with the Messmer plan which had financed the construction of five or six reactors a year from 1974 to 1981. Placing Superphoenix on line gave rise to various legal challenges which were settled by the Council of State. Recommissioning was decided by Pierre Beregovoy on the recommendation of the minister of research. Dismantling is a bone of contention between Lionel Jospin and Jacques Chirac.There are few technical devices that can boast of such treatment by the French and even international media, few technical devices whose name is so deeply inscribed in every political platform, and few whose fate depends on the outcome of so impassioned a debate. What can a philosophical discipline say about a matter so complex and politically charged?I think that ethics can make a contribution on two levels: it can allow for discussion about an overall judgement on the sense of such a venture; it can also shed some critical light on the decision procedures which led to the construction of the installation. We consider a Bertrand duopoly with homogeneous goods and we allow for asymmetric marginal costs. We derive the Myopic Stable Set in pure strategies as introduced by Demuynck et al.. In contrast to the set of Nash equilibria, the unique Myopic Stable Set can be easily characterized in closed form and it provides an intuitive set-valued prediction.

Pricing algorithms are computerized procedures a seller may use to adapt instantaneously its price to market conditions, including to prices quoted by its rivals. These algorithms are related to the extensive use of web-collectors which contribute in many industries to identifying the best price. In such settings, price competition operates between algorithms, no longer between executives of brick and mortar companies. In this context, the question is to know how implicit forms of collusion may arise between the sellers. This paper (...) is aimed at discussing this conceptual issue in a price-setting homogeneous product oligopoly with decreasing returns to scale where algorithms implement matching policies. Using fixed point argument, we find a family of equilibrium prices encompassing Cournot and Pareto efficient solutions, if matching is allowed upward and downward. Dynamical stability is studied in the linear demand constant return case. When matching operates only for price undercutting, this family is extended up to a bottom value of the market price, close to the Walrasian price. Pricing algorithms may solve the Bertrand–Edgeworth paradox. (shrink)

The only plausible form of philosophical antirealism deals with practical feasibility rather than with effectivity in principle. The very notion of recognizability is ambiguous, audit has to be considered from a stricter perspective than currently done. The intuitionistic assertability conditions are to be reinforced. This change requires a move towards a frame in which the circumstances of the application of a logical rule can be specified. (...) Meanwhile, in spite of his protestations, chess-playing computers continue to fascinate those who work in the area of artificial intelligence. -/- The game of chess has endured since at least the sixth century. Its earliest variant, the Indian game of Chaturanga, was from the beginning a game for thinkers. Since its inception, scholars, statesmen, strategists, and warriors have been fascinated by the game and its variants. German philosopher Emmanuel Lasker and famed French artist Marcel Duchamp were both Grandmasters at chess. Karl Marx played chess avidly, as did Sir Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre, and the logical positivist Max Black. Jean-Jacques Rousseau mentions in his Confessions that, at the time, he "had another expedient, not less solid, in the game of chess, to which I regularly dedicated, at Maugis's, the evenings on which I did not go to the theater. I became acquainted with M. de Legal, M. Husson, Philidor, and all the great chess players of the day, without making the least improvement in the game." . Fresh evidence from Free Choice Items (FCIs) in French question the current perception of the class. The role of some standard distinctions found in the literature is weakened or put in a new perspective. The distinction between universal and existential is no longer an intrinsic property of FCIs. Similarly, the opposition between variation-based vs intension-based analyses is relativized. We show that the regime of free choiceness can be characterized by an abstract constraint, that we call Non-Individuation (NI), and which (...) can be satisfied in different ways that match current distinctions. NI says that the information conveyed by a sentence containing a FCI should not be reducible to a referential situation, that is a situation in which particular individuals satisfy the sentence in the current world. The widely used resource of modal variation becomes a particular scenario of free-choiceness, not its essence. In fact, we show that under certain conditions, FCIs can occur in episodic, non-modal sentences, a fact that NI can accommodate. We also discuss more fine-grained aspects of the semantics of FCIs, such as their emotional colour. On amalgame souvent, sous le terme d' « échange », le sauvage du contrat social avec celui du marché. Il s'agit ici a contrario de les distinguer en montrant comment ces deux personnages répondent en réalité à deux modes d'argumentation tout à fait différents que les Lumières ont contraints à coexister selon des modalités très diverses. Or le syntagme moderne de« société civile» n'ajamais résorbé cette ambiguïté et nous trouvons là matière à bien des enseignements car cela permet de réfléchir (...) à la fois sur ce qu'est un« concept», une« historicité » et un « citoyen ». Méthodologie, anthropologie et politique apparaissent ainsi comme les trois horizons d'une analyse qui ne veut nullement réduire l'équivoque, mais bien plutôt en mesurer les richesses. (shrink)

L’actualité des publications en sociologie vient mettre en question sa capacité à expliquer ce qu’elle prend pour objet sans véritablement définir ce que signifie ce mot, expliquer. Le présent article cherche à répondre aux questions suivantes : qu’est-ce donc qu’expliquer? Que signifie exactement ce terme associé à la science? En quoi et pourquoi la visée que sous-tend le mot trouve-t-elle difficilement son droit, ou sa pertinence, en sociologie? Comment se conçoit l’explication en termes opératoires? Les réponses avancées ici s’appuient d’abord (...) sur les nuances apportées par l’épistémologie contemporaine à la caractérisation de la science associée aux trois maîtres mots que sont décrire, comprendre et expliquer. L’analyse d’une entrevue qualitative vient ensuite illustrer les opérations en vertu desquelles expliquer devient possible dans cette discipline, dès lors susceptible d’être considérée comme une science, elle-même conçue comme une connaissance par objet, par concept et par méthode.
