Systems of Care in Crisis: The Changing Nature of Palliative Care During COVID-19.Michael Chapman, Beth Russell & Jennifer Philip - 2020 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 17 (4):761-765.
Among the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19 is its impact on care systems, the social and other systems that we rely in to maintain and provide care for those with “illness.” This paper will examine these impacts through a description of the influence on palliative care systems that have arisen within this pandemic. It will explore the impact on the meaning of care, how care is performed and identified, and the responses of palliative care systems to these challenges. It will also (...)

The evolution of ideas l'évolution Des idées zur ideengeschichte hundred years of symbolic logic a retrospect on the occasion of the Boole de Morgan centenary.Evert W. Beth - 1947 - Dialectica 1 (4):331-346.
SummaryThe germs of future development, contained in Aristotle's logical works, are indicated, and their influence on the later evolution of logic is explained. The history of symbolic logic since Boole's Mathematical analysis and De Morgan's Formal logic, both of which were published in 1847, is divided into four approximately subsequent phases, viz.:1. algebra of logic; this phase is characterized by Boole's work;2. logical foundation of mathematics; this phase is characterized by Frege's, Peano's and Russell's work, by the discovery of the (...)

Philosophical and Scientific Intensity in the Thought of Gilles Deleuze.Mary Beth Mader - 2017 - Deleuze and Guatarri Studies 11 (2):259-277.
The physical sciences include highly developed fields that investigate intensities in the form of intensive quantities like speeds, temperatures, pressures and altitudes. Some contemporary readers of Deleuze interested in the physical sciences at times attribute to Deleuze a common, contemporary scientific concept of intensive magnitude. These readings identify Deleuze's philosophical conception of intensity with an existing scientific conception of intensity. The essay argues that Deleuze does not in fact lift a conception of intensity from the physical sciences to embed it (...)

  6. Britain's Religious Tribunals: 'Joint Governance' in Practice.Russell Sandberg, Gillian Douglas, Norman Doe, Sophie Gilliat-Ray & Asma Khan - 2013 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 33 (2):263-291.
In recent years, there have been a number of moral panics in Western societies about the existence of religious courts and tribunals in general and Shariah law in particular. In England and Wales, these concerns came to the fore following the 2008 lecture by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, on ‘Civil Law and Religious Law in England’. In that lecture, Williams drew upon the work of the Canadian scholar Ayelet Shachar endorsing her concept of ‘transformative accommodation’. In (...)

    Accounting as a Facilitator of Extreme Narcissism.Joel H. Amernic & Russell J. Craig - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 96 (1):79 - 93.
We add texture to the conclusion of Duchon and Drake (Journal of Business Ethics, 85, 2009, 301) that extreme narcissism is associated with unethical conduct. We argue that the special features possessed by financial accounting facilitate extreme narcissism in susceptible CEOs. In particular, we propose that extremely narcissistic CEOs are key players in a recurring discourse cycle facilitated by financial accounting language and measures. Such CEOs project themselves as the corporation they lead, construct a narrative about the corporation and themselves (...)

Skaldic Verse and Anglo-Saxon History: Some Aspects of the Period 1009–1016.Russell Poole - 1986 - Speculum 62 (2):265-298.
“Scaldic verses,” said Gabriel Turville-Petre, “can tell us little about the history of England, but the history of England may give us confidence in the authenticity of some scaldic verses.” A similar skepticism was voiced by Alistair Campbell.

Empirische logica: essays over logica, wetenschap en politieke cultuur.Else M. Barth - 2018 - Amsterdam: AUP. Edited by Else de Jonge & Wouter Slob.
Haar bijzondere (...)

  17. Living systems - autonomous unities.David Russell & Lloyd Fell - unknown
The question which is never entirely resolved is: what is life? Biology, claims to stand for the study of life and living things, yet we would say that it cannot make a thoroughly clear distinction between living and non living, except in some very obvious cases. There are textbook definitions, of course, based on certain notable properties such as the ability to metabolize or reproduce, but these are arbitrary. If we are familiar with the characteristics of a particular animal or (...)

    Opportunities and Challenges in an Ageing Society.E. M. Barth & Erik C. W. Krabbe - 1992 - North Holland.
Paperback. What has happened to the science of Logic, as an academic discipline and pursuit? The diagnoses do not coincide, but the recognition is growing that since the days of Mill, Russell or Beth, something has gone wrong. A logical vacuum - theoretical as well as practical - in large parts of contemporary culture is easily perceived and is particularly visible in politicis, precisely where logic as a science ought to make its greatest impact. The present volume offers analyses (...)

Affective biases in English are bi-dimensional.Amy Beth Warriner & Victor Kuperman - 2015 - Cognition and Emotion 29 (7):1147-1167.
A long-standing observation about the interface between emotion and language is that positive words are used more frequently than negative ones, leading to the Pollyanna hypothesis which alleges a predominantly optimistic outlook in humans. This paper uses the largest available collection of affective ratings as well as insights from linguistics to revisit the Pollyanna hypothesis as it relates to two dimensions of emotion: valence (pleasantness) and arousal (intensity). We identified systematic patterns in the distribution of words over a bi-dimensional affective (...)

Fairness and Equity in the Provision of Anti‐Retroviral Therapy: Some Reflections From Lesotho.Russell Armstrong - 2010 - Developing World Bioethics 10 (3):129-140.
The number of people in immediate need of anti‐retroviral treatment (ART) in the southern African region continues to significantly exceed the capacity of health systems there to provide it. Approaches to this complex rationing dilemma have evolved in different directions. The ethical concepts of fairness and equity have been suggested as a basis to guide the development of approaches to select patients for ART. This article reports the results of a case study on patient selection at a rural ART clinic (...)

The Phantom Menace (TPM) is one of the most polarizing films in the Star Wars franchise. In short, the philosophy in TPM is to Daoism what Taco Bell is to Mexican food: TPM may not be most authentic example of Daoist philosophy, but it's got some of the same flavors. Daoist writings feature many stories where someone who may seem useless turns out to be successful, or something that seems to be worthless turns out to be invaluable. TPM features many (...)
