We revisit the notion of initial sets by Xu and Cayrol 2016), i. e., non-empty minimal admissible sets in abstract argumentation frameworks. Initial sets are a simple concept for analysing conflicts in an abstract argumentation framework and to explain why certain arguments can be accepted. We contribute with new insights on the structure of initial sets and devise a simple non-deterministic construction principle for any admissible set, based on iterative selection of initial sets of the original framework and its induced (...) reducts. In particular, we characterise many existing admissibility-based semantics via this construction principle, thus providing a constructive explanation on the structure of extensions. We also investigate certain problems related to initial sets with respect to their computational complexity. (shrink)

In this article, the author studies the introduction of technology into the science curriculum. He offers a general framework for analyzing technology as artifact, knowledge, and social practice. This framework provides analytical tools to study the implications of technology in general education. The analysis is framed using two events: (a) the current movement of scientific literacy, which now includes technology literacy such as in the case of Project 2061, a science education initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of (...) the Science and (b) international calls for including technology in the school curricula of developing countries. In this paper we ask whether approximation for abstract argumentation is useful in practice, and in particular whether reasoning with grounded semantics – which has polynomial runtime – is already an approximation approach sufficient for several practical purposes. While it is clear from theoretical results that reasoning with grounded semantics is different from, for example, skeptical reasoning with preferred semantics, we investigate how significant this difference is in actual argumentation frameworks. As it turns out, in many graphs models, reasoning with (...) grounded semantics actually approximates reasoning with other semantics almost perfectly. An algorithm for grounded reasoning is thus a conceptually simple approximation algorithm that not only does not need a learning phase – like recent approaches – but also approximates well – in practice – several decision problems associated to other semantics. We consider the problem of learning argumentation frameworks from a given set of labelings such that every input is a σ-labeling of these argumentation frameworks. Our new algorithm takes labelings and computes attack constraints for each argument that represent the restrictions on argumentation frameworks that are consistent with the input labelings. Having constraints on the level of arguments allows for a very effective parallelization of all computations. An important element of this approach is maintaining a representation of all argumentation frameworks (...) that satisfy the input labelings instead of simply finding any suitable argumentation framework. This is especially important, for example, if we receive additional labelings at a later time and want to refine our result without having to start all over again. The unexpected death of a child is one of the most challenging losses as it fractures survivors’ sense of parenthood and other layers of identity. Given that not all the bereaved parents who have need for support respond well to available treatments and that many have little access to further intervention or follow-up over time, online interventions featuring therapeutic writing and peer support have strong potential. In this article we explore how a group of bereaved mothers experienced the process of (...) participating in an online course in therapeutic writing for the integration of grief. Our research questions were: How do parents who have lost a child experience being part of an online course in therapeutic writing? What are the perceived benefits and challenges of writing in processing their grief? We followed an existential phenomenological approach and analyzed fieldwork notes (n= 13), qualitative data from the application and assessment surveys (n= 35;n= 21), excerpts from the journals of some participants (n= 3), and email correspondence with some participants (n= 5). We categorized the results in three meaning units: (1) where does my story begin? The “both and” of their silent chaos; (2) standing on the middle line: a pregnancy that does not end; (3) closures and openings: “careful optimism” and the need for community support. Participants experienced writing as an opportunity for self-exploration regarding their identities and their emotional world, as well as a means to develop and strengthen a bond with their children. They also experienced a sense of belonging, validation, and acceptance in the online group in a way that helped them make sense of their suffering. Online writing courses could be of benefit for bereaved parents who are grieving the unexpected death of a child, but do not replace other interventions such as psychotherapy. In addition to trauma and attachment informed models of grief, identity informed models with a developmental focus might enhance the impact of both low-threshold community interventions and more intensive clinical ones. Further studies and theoretical development in the area are needed, addressing dialogical notions such as the multivoicedness of the self. (shrink)

In September 2018, the ArgDiaP association, along with colleagues from Germany and the UK, organised one of the longest and most interdisciplinary series of events ever dedicated to argumentation - Warsaw Argumentation Week, WAW 2018. The eleven-day ‘week’ featured a five day graduate school on computational and linguistic perspectives on argumentation (3rd SSA school); five workshops: on systems and algorithms for formal argumentation (2nd SAFA), argumentation in relation to society (1st ArgSoc), philosophical approaches to argumentation (1st ArgPhil), legal argumentation (2ndMET-ARG) (...) and argumentation in rhetoric (1st MET-RhET); and two conferences: on computational models of argumentation (7th COMMA conference) and on argumentation and corpus linguistics (16th ArgDiaP conference). WAW hosted twelve tutorials and eight invited talks as well as welcoming over 130 participants. All the conferences and workshops publish pre- or post-proceedings in the top journals and book series in the field. (shrink)

When Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros, "la Caixa," was created in 1905, it was not only the transient response to a serious social, political, and economical problem, but also provided a permanent solution by creating a long-lasting social welfare institution. In addition, its founder understood the responsibility of social welfare institutions not as an isolated responsibility for each institution, but as part of a harmonious whole that is a real moral entity with a socio-economic character, (...) with autonomy and unity of nature, purpose, and form. The purpose of this article is to show how the corporate social responsibility conception of Francesc Moragas, the founder of "la Caixa," informed the activities of the new institution in a variety of dimensions, including its service to the customers, its economic strengths, the social work, and its participation in the creation of the public system of social security in Spain. The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not new. Many entrepreneurs created and developed companies along the time, with a strong sense of ethical and social responsibility. This article presents an example of how CSR was conceived and put into practice when Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros was created in Barcelona in 1905, following the life and ideas of its founder, Francesc Moragas, a lawyer with a deep commitment for social action and a successful (...) conception of the technical and economic dimensions of a financial and social institution. This article analyses the musicalization of poems from Jorge Luis Borges carried out by the musician Pedro Aznar within the record Caja de música. With the aim to establish the manner this intermedial proceeding can be seen as a creative act and, simultaneously, as a critical stance on the borgean poetry. Additionally, specific concepts used in the musicalization process are presented, and the way the high culture and mass culture are linked in Aznar’s record though the union of scholar (...) poetry with popular music. Cuestionado el protagonismo que han acaparado los procedimientos de división y reunión en los estudios sobre la dialéctica del Platón tardío, nos proponemos echar luz sobre una herramienta que, funcionando a la par de aquellos, ha sido soslayada. Nos referimos a la metretiké y al rol clave que ella cumple en los diálogos Político y Filebo. Además, partiendo de ese estudio, sugeriremos que el método filosófico ideal opera como un variado kit de herramientas sin circunscribirse a ninguna de ellas.

En este trabajo nos ocupamos de considerar la aportación que una fenomenología del reflejo especular proporciona a la comprensión del funcionamiento de la Terapia del Espejo en el tratamiento sintomático del dolor del miembro fantasma. El desarrollo de la exposición consta de dos apartados: uno primero dedicado a una fundamentación fenomenológica general de la percepción especular, y un segundo dedicado a la explicación de la percepción de reflejos según la fenomenología de Husserl, y su posible aplicación a la explicación del (...) funcionamiento de la terapia del espejo. Pensamos que el argumento de Wittgenstein sobre el lenguaje privado se encuentra en las Investigaciones Filosóficas , aunque discrepemos de dónde se encuentra exactamente y qué tipo de argumento es. Podemos hollar bosquejos tempranos del argumento -o algo parecido- en los textos de Wittgenstein de los años treinta así como en sus apuntes para el dictado de clases de esos años. En el presente artículo sostendré que hay un argumento del lenguaje privado en el Tractatus , cercanamente emparentado con el (...) argumento de las Investigaciones , aunque también distinto de este último en importantes aspectos. En los cursos dictados en el Collège de France a partir de 1978 Michel Foucault propuso una analítica de las formas de gobierno, que aunque no estaba completamente ausente de sus trabajos anteriores, si se veía opacada por el protagonismo dado a los análisis disciplinarios. Esta analítica de las formas de gobierno consiste en mostrar cómo se construyen estrategias y racionalidades de gobierno a partir de la gestión y modulación de los procesos innatos a los individuos y los grupos gobernados. Ya no se trata de entender el poder como una fuerza externa que se opone a los individuos y que opera reprimiéndolos o suprimiéndolos, sino como una estrategia que opera promoviendo procesos naturales a partir de los cuales los sujetos constituyen su identidad.
