Increased technological and pharmacological interventions in patient care when patient outcomes are uncertain have been linked to the escalation in moral and ethical dilemmas experienced by health care providers in acute care settings. Health care research has shown that facilities that are able to attract and retain nursing staff in a competitive environment and provide high quality care have the capacity for nurses to process and resolve moral and ethical dilemmas. This article reports on the findings of a systematic review (...) of the empirical literature (1980 — February 2007) on the effects of unresolved moral distress and poor ethical climate on nurse turnover. Articles were sought to answer the review question: Does unresolved moral distress and a poor organizational ethical climate increase nurse turnover? Nine articles met the criteria of the review process. Although the prevailing sentiment was that poor ethical climate and moral distress caused staff turnover, definitive answers to the review question remain elusive because there are limited data that confidently support this statement. We define an applicative theoryCL 2 similar to combinatory logic which can be interpreted in classes of functions possessing an enumerating function. In contrast to the models of classical combinatory logic, it is not necessarily assumed that the enumerating function itself belongs to that function class. Thereby we get a variety of possible models including e. g. the classes of primitive recursive, recursive, elementary, polynomial-time comptable ofɛ 0-recursive functions.We show that inCL 2 a major part of the metatheory of enumerated (...) classes of functions can be developed. Namely, a kind of λ-abstraction can be defined and abstract versions of theS n m - and (Primitive) Recursion Theorems are proved. Thereby, a closer analysis of the phenomenon of the different recursion theorems is achieved.A theory closely related toCL 2 can be used to replace the applicative part of Feferman's theories for explicit mathematics. So this work can be seen as an answer to Feferman's question to formulate a theory for explicit mathematics in which operations can be interpreted as primitive recursive or even more feasible ones.Finally it is shown that the proof-theoretical strength of various theoreies for explicit mathematics is preserved when replacing the applicative part of the theories by our theory together with an operation for primitive recursion. Antecedent-strengthening, a trivially valid inference of classical logic of the form: P → Q ⊨ → Q, has a counterpart in everyday reasoning that often fails. A plausible solution to the problem involves assuming an implicit ceteris paribus qualifier that can be explicated as an additional conjunct in the antecedent of the premise. The qualifier can be explicated as ‘everything else relevant remains unchanged’ or alternatively as ‘nothing interferes’. The qualifier appears most prominently in the context of the discussion of (...) laws in the sciences, where these laws are often expressed with a CP qualifier. From an analysis of the qualifier’s role in the problem of antecedent-strengthening, we can learn more about CP qualifiers in general and in their application to the laws used in the sciences. In this paper, I take up the question of how epistemic injustices can be resisted. Miranda Fricker, who introduced the term to describe situations in which subjects are wronged as knowers, has initially advocated an individualist, virtue-based account to counteract epistemic injustices. Epistemic injustices, however, do not merely operate at an individual level but are rooted in social practices and structures. Arguably therefore, individually virtuous epistemic conduct is not enough to uproot patterns of epistemic injustice. Institutional change and collective actions (...) are needed. Recently, Elizabeth Anderson has proposed such a structural remedy. Diagnosing patterns of social segregation that track existing inequalities to be the principal structural cause of epistemic injustices, Anderson suggests that integration is required to achieve epistemic justice. Pace Anderson, I argue that certain segregated spaces —namely spaces provided by subaltern counter-publics— can function and, in fact, have historically functioned as important sites of epistemic resistance. In particular, I argue that even if integration is sharply distinguished from assimilation, Anderson’s proposal insufficiently acknowledges the subversive potential of those spaces, in which shielded from the gaze of the oppressors, marginally situated subjects can assemble and question hegemonic epistemic practices. Gibt es ein einzelnes Problem, das mit Recht als das Grundproblem der Semantik bezeichnet werden kann? Der Titel dieses Buches behauptet es und unterstellt zugleich, Frege habe sich mit diesem Grundproblem auseinandergesetzt. Die Aufgabe der Semantik besteht darin, die unterschiedlichen semantischen Funktionen verschiedener Ausdrücke darzustellen; sie wird zum Problem, weil unklar ist, wie sie begonnen werden soll. Einerseits sind die selbständigen Ausdrücke (meistens syntaktisch und immer semantisch) komplex, so dass scheinbar auch ihre Funktionen aus denen der einfacheren, die sie aufbauen, (...) erklärt werden müssen; andererseits ist gerade dies unmöglich, weil die letzteren Funktionen sicher nicht von den ersteren abhängen. Freges Beitrag zur philosophischen Semantik besteht zunächst einmal in gegensätzlichen Vorschlägen - kompositionaler Charakter der Sätze bei gleichzeitiger Kontextualität der Aufbaustücke - die sich jedoch verständlich vereinbaren lassen, und eine Aufklärung jener Funktionen von den komplexen her, beispielsweise der des Behauptungssatzes, ermöglichen. Nun können auch Freges Überlegungen zur semantischen Funktion des Behauptungssatzes selbst fruchtbar gemacht werden, und von dorther wird schließlich auch seine Theorie der unterschiedlichen Funktionen der einfacheren Ausdrücke, insbesondere der Eigennamen und Prädikate, verständlich. In einer Zeit, in der die Polarisierung von Gesellschaften ebenso in den öffentlichen Diskurs eindringt wie die ganze Menschheit betreffende, existenzielle Unsicherheiten, gewinnen Aspekte der Identität sowohl Raum als auch Bedeutung. Im ersten Teil des Beitrags werden Aspekte der Geborgenheit durch Identität beleuchtet und die Instrumentarisierung im Sinne einer ‚Identitätsnutzung‘ diskutiert. Der zweite Abschnitt geht der Frage nach, ob der Mensch eine ökologische Identität per evolutionem sein Eigen nennen kann oder vielleicht sogar eine Identität der Nachhaltigkeit erworben hat. Mit der (...) inzwischen kritischen Zunahme der Weltbevölkerung sieht sich die ganze Menschheit selbst erzeugten Problemen gegenüber, deren Lösung immer unwahrscheinlicher wird. In einer Anzahl von Ländern der Erde beobachtet man eine Abnahme der Fertilität von Frauen. Dies betrifft weite Teile von Europa und Amerika, aber ebenso muslimische Länder wie Saudi Arabien oder den Irak. Vielleicht bewirkt eine steigende Zukunftsunsicherheit eine unmerklich heranwachsende Identität der Frauen im Sinne einer Nachhaltigkeit und Bewahrung. (shrink)

Im Kontext eines umfassenden Rearrangements diskursiver Strukturen um 1800 werden auch Veranderungen innerhalb der Musik wirksam, die als grundlegende mediale Neudisposition verstanden werden konnen. Dabei sind diese Modifikationen in ein Netzwerk von Bestimmungsleistungen unterschiedlicher Provenienz eingebunden, das sich alsbald zu einem regelrechten 'Sinnprojekt' verdichtet. Dessen nahere Konturierung sowie seine vielfaltigen Postfigurationen und intermedialen Spielarten innerhalb unserer Gegenwartskultur stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung. Hier werden zugleich Strategien der asthetischen Gestaltung und theoretischen Reflexion mit in den Blick genommen, die sich jeweils auf (...) ihre eigene Weise mit diesem 'Sinnprojekt' auseinandersetzen. Im Rahmen dieser musik-, kultur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Betrachtungen kommen insbesondere folgende Phanomene zur Sprache: die mediale Disposition von 'Tonkunst' um 1800 - 'Klassik' und 'classic' - die Asthetik digitaler Klange - Marvin Minskys 'Geistesgesellschaft' - 'Brain Opera' - filmasthetische Konzeptionen bei Cameron und Lynch - Sound Libraries und Sound Tracks. By bringing feminist science studies scholar Donna J. Haraway’s A manifesto for cyborgs (1985) and Situated knowledges (1988) in line with contemporary critical new materialist thought (see Colman & Van der Tuin, 2024; Dolphijn & Van der Tuin, 2012; Geerts, 2022), this critical pedagogical and philosophical think piece tackles the problematic of Anthropocenic disruptions of the planetary biosphere for critical pedagogies and higher education (also see Carstens, 2016). It additionally encourages its readers to think through their own pedagogical conceptions and (...) praxes by means of irruptive (Geerts & Carstens, 2024; Koro-Ljungberg, 2015) selfreflection- stimulating questions. Our situated – and thus limited and open-ended – response to this all-encompassing Anthropocenic crisis is rooted in a rethinking of Harawayan cyborgian and situated knowledges and the critical pedagogical lessons drawn from the latter. Rereading Haraway’s work through contemporary critical new materialist and related scholarship reveals that it already contained an ecofeminist onto-epistemological shift toward more-than-human agency and relationality. This shift has major consequences for all things critical pedagogical and educational, as our pedagogical thinking-doings are deeply embedded in today’s crisis-ridden lifeworld. This rereading exercise furthermore underlines the necessity of an updated critical new materialist pedagogical praxis for learning and teaching, inspired by Harawayan ecofeminism, that takes the entanglements between human, dehumanised, and more-than-human actors seriously. Representative for contemporary attempts to establish a science of consciousness we examine Chalmers' statement and resolution of the 'hard problem of consciousness'. Agreeing with him that in order to account for subjectivity it is necessary to expand the ontology of the natural sciences, we argue that it is not sufficient to just add conscious experience to the list of fundamental features of the world. Instead, we turn to phenomenology as the philosophy of conscious experience and give an outline of Merleau-Ponty's (...) critique of the objectivist ontology underlying science which excludes subjectivity from the world. We reconstruct his proposal for a revised ontology in The Visible and the Invisible aiming at an extended understanding of Being including subjectivity, which takes on the form of a constellation of new ontological terms centered around the concept of the 'flesh of the world'. Trying to spell out the consequences of Merleau-Ponty's ontological considerations for scientific practice and especially the science of consciousness, we notice that his philosophy of subjectivity-in-the-world on its part is unable to connect to the insights of the natural sciences. The phenomenological critique of the 'hard problem' reveals a deeper disparity which, at present, limits its practical implications. (shrink)

In this paper we study the logic $\mathcal{L}^\lambda_{\omega\omega}$, which is first-order logic extended by quantification over functions . We give the syntax of the logic as well as the semantics in Heyting categories with exponentials. Embedding the generic model of a theory into a Grothendieck topos yields completeness of $\mathcal{L}^\lambda_{\omega\omega}$ with respect to models in Grothendieck toposes, which can be sharpened to completeness with respect to Heyting-valued models. The logic $\mathcal{L}^\lambda_{\omega\omega}$ is the strongest for which Heyting-valued completeness is known.
