The prevalence of examination cheating has continued to impact educational assessments all over the world. This study leveraged on using rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT), a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach to treat examination cheating behavior among secondary school students in Nigeria. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design-specifically, the pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group design. A sample of 67 (35 male and 32 female) students was used in the study. The examination cheating behavior scale (ECBS) with a reliability index of.86 (...) was administered at the pretest and posttest stages. The treatment manuals for REBT and conventional counseling (CC) were used by two therapists to administer the interventions which lasted for a total of five weeks. Frequency count, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, and ANCOVA were used in the analysis. The findings highlight the potency of REBT in the treatment of examination cheating behavior. Findings also demonstrate that gender influences examination cheating behavior among students. Additionally, the findings showed a significant interaction effect of interventions and gender on the examination cheating behavior scores of students. Conclusively, REBT is significantly a potent intervention for the treatment of unethical or maladaptive behaviors like examination cheating behavior. The aim of the paper is to address the question: is the end of development possible? Post-development theorists declare the end of development. They insist that the problematisation of poverty by development theory is one of the key defects of development. The irony in this problematisation is that development practice as an offshoot of development theory does not actually alleviate poverty, particularly in colonial spaces. Rather, the agents of development have perpetuated underdevelopment at the fringes of the colonial metropolis. Given (...) this perpetuation of underdevelopment, post-development theorists argue, the idea of development has run its course and is no longer efficient; it should be put to an end. We assess this declaration of post-development theory from the perspective of Agbakoba’s intercultural philosophy of development. Using the philosophical methods of analysis and critique, we argue that Agbakoba’s intercultural proposal for a transition to development in Africa holds more prospects and is more feasible in addressing the concerns of post-development scholars. This is because, Agbakoba’s intercultural philosophy of development does not insist on the end of development, but on hybridity as the end of development. (shrink)

In 1933, Ethel Thompson Overby became the first African American female principal in Richmond, Virginia. Her motto was ?It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness? (Overby 1975, 1). Before becoming principal, Overby had been a teacher in the southern urban de jure segregated schools of the city. How did the racially segregated context impact her understanding of democracy as an African American woman? As a teacher, what educational practices did she subscribe to? What educational theorizing (...) underpinned her educational practices as a teacher and as a principal? Who was she? These were the questions that guided this research into the educational theorizing of Ethel T. Overby. This research seeks to further the understanding of the theorizing that underpinned the educational practices of African American female teachers and principals who taught and led in public urban de jure segregated southern schools (Charron 2009; Johnson 2000; May 2007; Walker 2009). This is surprising in both large and small ways. Still, when we appreciate the explanatory framework set by his hylomorphic analysis of change, we can see why Aristotle should think of the soul's motion as involving a kind of category mistake-not the putative Rylean mistake, but rather the mistake of treating a change as itself (...) capable of changing. In this interview, Christopher Norris discusses a wide range of issues having to do with postmodernism, deconstruction and other controversial topics of debate within present-day philosophy and critical theory. More specifically he challenges the view of deconstruction as just another offshoot of the broader postmodernist trend in cultural studies and the social sciences. What is it for a thinker to possess the concept of perceptual experience? What is it to be able to think of seeings, hearings and touchings, and to be able to think of experiences that are subjectively like seeings, hearings and touchings?

Optimistic predictions that genetic and genomic testing will provide health benefits have been tempered by the concern that individuals who receive their results may experience negative psychosocial outcomes. This potential ethical and clinical concern has prompted extensive conversations between policy‐makers, health researchers, ethicists, and the general public. Fortunately, the psychosocial consequences of such testing are subject to empirical investigation, and over the past quarter century, research that clarifies some of the types, likelihood, and severity of potential harms from learning the (...) results of the testing has accumulated. I aim to provide an overview of the findings of this research by looking at selected systematic reviews. This will convey the gist of the literature’s quality and coverage, reveal gaps in existing knowledge, and highlight promising areas for future scholarship. (shrink)

With the goal of understanding how Christopher Southgate communicates his in-depth knowledge of both science and theology, we investigated the many roles he assumes as a teacher. We settled upon wide-ranging topics that all intertwine: (1) his roles as author and coordinating editor of a premier textbook on science and theology, now in its third edition; (2) his oral presentations worldwide, including plenaries, workshops, and short courses; and (3) the team teaching approach itself, which is often needed by others (...) because the knowledge of science and theology do not always reside in the same person. Southgate provides, whenever possible, teaching contexts that involve students in experiential learning, where they actively participate with other students.We conclude that Southgate’s ultimate goal is to teach students how to reconcile science and theology in their values and beliefs, so that they can take advantage of both forms of rational thinking in their own personal and professional lives. A characteristic feature of Wagnerian and post-Wagnerian opera is the tendency to link scenes with numerous and often surprisingly lengthy orchestral interludes, frequently performed with the curtain closed. Often taken for granted or treated as a filler by audiences and critics, these interludes can take on very prominent roles, representing dream sequences, journeys and sexual encounters, and in some cases becoming a highlight of the opera. Christopher Morris investigates the implications of these important but strangely overlooked passages. Combining close (...) readings of individual musical texts with an investigation of the critical discourse surrounding the operas, Morris shows how the interludes shed light not only on the representational and narrative capacities of the orchestra, but also on the supposed 'absolute' realm of instrumental music, a concept to which many critics appealed when they associated the interludes with 'purely musical' and 'symphonic' qualities. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), philosophe allemand nomme le pessimiste de Francfort, heritier de Kant, s'inspirant de la sagesse hindouiste et bouddhiste, a imprime une marque durable sur la philosophie en faisant du vouloir inconscient la moelle substantielle de l'univers et l'element determinant en l'homme. Inventeur de la demarche genealogique, il interprete toutes les manifestations humaines (comportement, texte, discours, etc.) a la lumiere d'un sens latent qu'on peut decouvrir sous le sens manifeste en remontant au type de volonte qui s'exprime dans chaque (...) manifestation. Nietzsche, Marx et Freud se souviendront de la lecon et s'attacheront a detecter les aspirations profondes qui se travestissent dans les attitudes et declarations assumees par les individus ou les groupes sociaux. A ce titre, on peut dire que Schopenhauer prefigure les penseurs du soupcon. Christophe Bouriau expose ici cette philosophie du sens en partant de son fondement metaphysique, le vouloir-vivre, pour developper ensuite la portee existentielle de cette intuition initiale. Le vouloir est en effet a la source du mal, c'est-a-dire de la souffrance (le mal subi) et de l'injustice (le mal commis). A l'encontre de ce que soutient Nietzsche, Schopenhauer n'entend pas nous disposer a la resignation face au mal. Il nous propose plutot trois voies pour le contrer: l'experience esthetique, la morale de la compassion et l'ascese. L'ouvrage se clot sur la posterite de cette pensee atypique et en particulier de son concept d' inconscient. Christophe Bouriau, Directeur du departement de philosophie de l'Universite de Lorraine et membre des Archives Poincare a Nancy, a co-edite l'ouvrage collectif Schopenhauer et l'inconscient (avec J.-C. The objective of this paper is to show that the specific meaning of “affectivity” in Merleau-Ponty’s works can be better understood by approaching its connection with the notion of “imagination”. This strategy can be contrasted with Sartre’s approach; his specific conception of consciousness locks off the relation between imagination and affectivity from the start. On the contrary, the free play of this axis, which can be analysed since the early Phenomenology of Perception, allows for the overflowing of the horizon of (...) visibility of subjectivity toward a certain invisible. Th e concrete junction of imagination and affectivity then spreads out into the region of the notion of desire. (shrink)

In this commentary, I discuss Christopher Stratman’s article, “Ecotogenesis and the Problem of Abortion.” First, I try to offer some better defenses of assertions that Stratman makes. Next, I question Stratman’s supposition that “there is no morally relevant difference between a fetus and a cryopreserved embryo.” Finally, I challenge the claim that immoral actions cannot give rise to rights.

Bonaventure came to Paris as a young man, probably in 1234 or 1235, a time when the city was undergoing extraordinary rebirth. Three historic movements had recently converged on the banks of the Seine when Bonaventure began his new life in Paris: the rediscovery of Aristotle, the turn to “universities” for education, and the emergence of the Franciscans.
