Neste artigo, discutimos o papel das explicações teleológicas na teoriaGaia. Mostramos que seu principal proponente, James Lovelock, pretendeevitá-las devido a uma interpretação equivocada da natureza de taisexplicações. Na tentativa de evitar compromissos com a teleologia,Lovelock recorre ao conceito de propriedades emergentes. Esta não é,contudo, uma saída consistente, porque os conceitos de propriedadesemergentes e teleologia não são mutuamente excludentes. Discutimostambém as dificuldades de uma interpretação de Gaia de uma perspectivateleonômica, considerando problemas como o da noção de superorganismo.Para avaliar o estatuto das (...) explicações teleológicas em Gaia, examinamoso caso da interação entre algas e nuvens, que resultou num novo campo depesquisas e expõe as contribuições teóricas e empíricas que Gaia podeoferecer. Com base nos argumentos apresentados ao longo do artigo,sugerimos uma reorganização da estrutura do programa de pesquisa Gaia,visando à continuação de seu progresso teórico e empírico.In this paper, we discuss the role of teleological explanations in Gaia theory.We show that its main proponent, James Lovelock, intends to avoid themdue to a misinterpretation of the nature of teleological explanations. Inorder to avoid a commitment to teleology, Lovelock appeals to the conceptof emergent properties. This is not a consistent solution, however, since the concepts of emergent properties and teleology are not mutuallyexclusive. We also discuss difficulties in an interpretation of Gaia from ateleonomic perspective, discussing problems such as that of the notion ofsuperorganism. In order to appraise the status of teleological explanationsin Gaia, we examine the case of the interaction between algae and clouds,which gave birth to a new research field and show the theoretical andempirical contributions that Gaia can bring. Based on the argumentsdeveloped in the paper, we suggest a reorganization of the structure ofGaia research program, in order to go on with its theoretical and empiricalprogress. (shrink)

O presente artigo se ocupa do problema funcional da consciência referente às questões do porquê a consciência evoluiu e se é relevante para os organismos. A hipótese defendida é que a consciência tem a função comunicativa capaz de recrutar a memória de trabalho, especialmente, os seus subcomponentes especialistas em linguagem, e o sistema cognitivo-computacional, que tem, em seu núcleo, uma estrutura sintática para codificar simbolicamente a informação implícita no organismo. Aos organismos que possuem esses recursos, foi conferida uma vantagem adaptativa, (...) uma vez que tais organismos vivem numa organização socialmente interdependente e, assim, puderam comunicar aos outros organismos, com mais complexidade e precisão do que a comunicação comportamental não simbólica, os seus estados internos e implícitos, tais como o estado dos seus corpos, as suas intenções, os seus planos, e as características do ambiente. A metodologia possui duas fases: primeiro, uma abordagem teórico-conceitual, com base em variados modelos explicativos teórico-experimentais, na qual foram comparadas diferentes definições teórico-conceituais para a origem da consciência. Depois, modelos filogenéticos de estudos comparativos forneceram insights válidos sobre a consciência em animais humanos e não-humanos. Assim, o objetivo geral aqui consiste em postular uma definição conceitual de consciência. Os resultados sugeriram quais as condições necessárias para a emergência da consciência no tocante à memória de trabalho, atenção, representações de alta-ordem e linguagem. Concluiu-se que a pesquisa está em uma fase de brainstorming. Nessa fase, a hipótese é avaliada criticamente e submetida a testes de aproximação com diferentes modelos. Se for bem-sucedida, ela poderá ser aplicada experimentalmente no futuro. (shrink)

Em um artigo intitulado “Whether certainty is a form of life”, Elizabeth Wolgast ataca por duas vias diversas a concepção witgensteiniana de proposição gramatical desenvolvida no Da Certeza. Ela acusa Wittgenstein de contradizer certas teses centrais das Investigações Filosóficas, ao estabelecer como significativas proposições sem uso em nossos jogos de linguagem correntes, e denuncia a precariedade da tese, supostamente presente no Da Certeza, de que proposições gramaticais descrevem nosso sistema de crenças. Procuro refutar ambas as objeções por meio de uma (...) apresentação de evidências de que proposições gramaticais podem ter uso efetivo em jogos de linguagem correntes, e da demonstração de que uma mesma proposição pode, a um só tempo, descrever o uso das palavras em uma língua e servir como exemplo (modelo) de uso. Busco apoio no artigo de Debrah Aidun, “Wittgenstein on gramatical propositions”, para efetuar essa investigação sobre o estatuto das proposições gramaticais e faço complementações a seus argumentos de modo a aproximar o último Wittgenstein das pesquisas sobre os atos de fala conforme desenvolvidas por Austin e Searle. O presente artigo lida com a questão da compatibilidade entre duas exigências opostas da filosofia teorética de Kant: a crítica, por um lado, e a ideia de sistema, por outro. Enquanto a crítica assenta sobre uma divisão da razão em faculdades distintas, o sistema é um ideal de unidade sob um mesmo princípio. Uma apreciação do uso do termo "sistem" nas principais obras críticas de Kant mostra que o termo é equívoco, e que os seus diferentes sentidos só podem ser (...) sistematicamente unificados na medida em que a razão se puder definir como auto-determinação e auto-diferenciação em si mesma. Esta análise e conclusão são fundadas num estudo (1) do sistema como forma conceptual por excelência, (2) da questão do sistema em relação ao problema do fundamento, (3) do sistema como unidade de princípio, (4) do sistema como particularização do universal e por fim, (5) da possibilidade de uma determinação por reflexão como chave da sistematicidade. /// Subject of this paper is the relation between the opposite demands of critique and of the idea of system in Kant's theoretical philosophy. Critique rests on a division of reason in itself while system, on the other hand, is an ideal of unity under one principle. An analysis of the use of the term "system" in Kant's main critical works shows that the term is equivocal, and that its different meanings can only be systematically unified in so far as reason can be defined as self-determination and self-differentiation. This analysis and its conclusion are supported on a study of (1) system as conceptual form, (2) system and the problem of grounds, (3) system as unity of principles, (4) system as particularization of the universal, and (5) the possibility of a reflective determination as key to the idea of systematicity in Kant. In this paper, we intend to demonstrate that the asylum request process can have its semantic and politic structures evidenced from an access via philosophy of language. In order to elucidate the normative nature of this social practice and to take a critical stance in relation to the treatment given to the refuge interview as it has been done in our country, we resort to certain concepts developed by the so called later Wittgenstein. Looking for a more complete treatment of (...) our object of study, we also turn to the authors of Bakhtin’s Circle, which explore communicational dimensions that the Viennese philosopher did not properly explore – with special emphasis on “value accents”. In order to collect empirical evidence relevant to our purposes, a field research was carried out with professionals and volunteers involved in the asylum request interviews. The resulting reports provided us with more basis for the considerations we make about the normative fragility of the interview language game and the intricate value system that guides the interaction between interviewer, interpreter and interviewee. O objetivo deste artigo é defender que o caráter ontológico da imagem no Sofista de Platão é uma solução estranha e extraordinária (ou atópica) para o paradoxo (aporía) do falso. E isso tem relação com o embate educacional sobre os fundamentos dos discursos filosóficos e o combate à tese radicalizada de alguns sofistas que defendiam a impossibilidade de dizer o falso. Será apontado que o ser do falso e o ser do não-ser possuem uma conexão com o ser da imagem, (...) contra aqueles que recusam ao mesmo tempo a possibilidade de existir e de dizer o falso, o não-ser e as imagens. Contra eles é preciso permitir a ontologia e a linguagem do falso, do não-ser e das imagens. A existência estranha das imagens é responsável por oferecer um primeiro entrelaçamento entre ser e não-ser que será fundamental para enfrentar o paradoxo da impossibilidade do falso, como provaremos. With this, we intend to question some of the most common diagnoses and solutions for the underdevelopment of philosophical practice in Brazil, as well as provide our contribution to the propagation of a philosophical practice that risks the leap from (...) commentary to creation. Functional language is ubiquitous in ecology, mainly in the researches about biodiversity and ecosystem function. However, it has not been adequately investigated by ecologists or philosophers of ecology. In the contemporary philosophy of ecology we can recognize a kind of implicit consensus about this issue: while the etiological approaches cannot offer a good concept of function in ecology, Cummins’ systemic approach can. Here we propose to go beyond this implicit consensus, because we think these approaches are not adequate for ecology. (...) We argue that a sound epistemological framework to function in ecology is to be found in organizational approaches. In this line, we define function in ecology as a precise effect of a given constraint on the ecosystem flow of matter and energy performed by a given item of biodiversity, within a closure of constraints. We elaborate on this definition by developing a case study of a bromeliad ecosystem. (shrink)

What is the true significance of biological kinship? During the last decades, it seemed to be uncontroversial that abandoned and even adopted people feel the negative impact of biological parents’ absence throughout life in several ways (Miller et al. 2000; Keyes, Margaret A., Anu Sharma, Irene J Elkins, and William G. Iacono, Matt McGue. 2008. The Mental Health of US Adolescents Adopted in Infancy. Archive Pediatric Adolescense Medicine 162(5): 419–425.). However, in the case of people conceived via “third-party reproduction”, especially (...) in sperm donation, the disruption of the kinship network derived from natural bonds tends to be presented as something irrelevant. This article disputes that assumption, explores its relationship with a deconstructivist vision that presents kinship as a purely social construct and defends the personal and existential value of a person’s biological bonds with her parents. While analysing the anthropological shift inherent to the way some political discourses present the nuclear family and heterologous biotechnology, it proposes renewed philosophical attention on the significance of filiation and human affinity. This article argues for the density of genealogical ties and defends that the consecration of an individual “right to a child”, namely (but not exclusively) through the normalised access to sperm banks, is incompatible with the rights of the child, since it deprives people from knowing not only who but also how is their father. A filosofia clássica alemã desenvolveu uma ‘viragem histórica’ da filosofia transcendental de Kant. Uma das bases desse movimento é a teoria da história que Fichte desenvolveu a partir de elementos a priori. Mantendo a compreensão da história como processo de efetivação da liberdade, Hegel concebeu a filosofia da história não como o estabelecimento de leis para os acontecimentos históricos, mas como a deteção do fio da razão nos factos empíricos. Este artigo procura mostrar como Hegel, aceitando a presença substancial do (...) mal na história humana, concebe a possibilidade de uma reconciliação com os factos da história universal, entendida como o processo de transformação do poder em instituições de reconhecimento. In the third book of Republic, Plato analyzed the epic, the tragedy and the dithyramb styles of narration, explaining a little how is the lógos of what the poets say. Aristotle dealt with it when he talked about the poetic lexis, at times in the Poetic, stating that the dialogue is the meter discovered by the tragedy, and at other times in the Rhetoric, stating that the dialogue is the most dramatic way to write. Before this general aspect of exchanges (...) among the characters, the notion of imitation of the Socratic talks in Plato deserves new reflections, mainly aiming to understand what is being disputed in the quarrel between philosophy and poetry in the tenth book of Republic and, also, how much Plato radically goes apart from a simple drama. MacFarlane (2014) advocates a radical form of semantic relativism. He argues that his proposal complies with the norms governing our assertion practices in various areas of discourse. These practices also include norms regarding the conditions in which it is inappropriate not to retract an assertion. Ferrari & Zeman (2014) identify an asymmetry concerning retractions in two relevant areas of discourse and argue that assessment-sensitivity needs to be supplemented with further theoretical tools to explain it. Sob a inspiração de Bataille, Foucault propõe, em 1963, uma ontologia crítica fundada na ideia de transgressão. Esta não é nem uma atitude, nem um comportamento, e não pertence por conseguinte nem ao domínio da ética, nem ao da moral. Pelo contrário: a transgressão é um acontecimento do ser que ocorre nos limites do ser, acontecimento no qual esses limites são simultaneamente violados, revelados e abolidos. Vinte anos mais tarde, depois de seu regresso à antiguidade clássica, Foucault propõe uma outra (...) ontologia crítica, que se apoia desta vez sobre a ética. Em ambos os casos, trata-se de pensar o ser e os limites. Porém, a transgressão despedaça o sujeito, ao passo que a ética o molda e o protege. (shrink)

In this article we address Foucault’s interpretation of Kant’s anthropology as a whole, i.e. beyond Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View . I expose Foucault’s three most important thesis, which concern firstly the faithfulness of this book to the critical work that preceded it; secondly, the need of reading the Introduction to the Logic and the Opus postumum in order to draw crucial aspects of Kant’s anthropology; and thirdly, the importance of reviving a critical gesture , so as to (...) demystify the pretensions of the post-kantian anthropological discourse. This way the difference between Foucault and Heidegger on the one side, and Foucault and Sartre on the other side, becomes clear: against the latter he adopts an anti-humanist perspective, and unlike the former he uses the Opus postumum to distinguish false anthropology from Kant’s anthropology.Neste texto analisamos a leitura que Foucault fez da antropologia kantiana no seu conjunto, isto é, para além da Antropologia de um ponto de vista pragmático . As três teses foucaultianas mais importantes são, primeiro, a da fidelidade deste livro à obra crítica que o precedeu; segundo, a da necessidade de ler a Introdução da Lógica e o Opus postumum para penetrar aspetos essenciais da antropologia de Kant; terceiro, a da importância de retomar um certo gesto crítico , para desmistificar as pretensões do discurso antropológico pós-kantiano. Neste percurso, torna-se nítido o modo como Foucault se distingue tanto de Heidegger quanto de Sartre: se se opõe a este por via do anti-humanismo teórico, também se diferencia de Heidegger pela forma como se serve do Opus postumum, que Heidegger praticamente ignorou. Plus que jamais, sans doute, nous avons besoin de strategies critiques pour l'emancipation. Or, lisant la philosophie des deux derniers siecles, on decouvre les attitudes les plus contrastees dans ce domaine. Kant, qui definit les Lumieres comme - la sortie de l'homme de la minorite dont il est lui-meme responsable -, incite son lecteur a devenir adulte. Par contre, Deleuze (seul ou avec Guattari) met en avant un devenir-mineur et insiste sur un devenir-enfant qui soit un devenir-force. En meme temps, (...) cette opposition immediate de Kant et Deleuze esquive tout ce qui a mene de l'un a l'autre. Lorsqu'on reprend le fil qui les lie, des figures inattendues surgissent: Sartre, Bataille et Foucault deviennent alors les personnages d'une histoire tissee autour de Baudelaire, par rapport auquel les trois philosophes-ecrivains prennent des positions radicalement divergentes. Si on veut donc comprendre ce qui semble etre le renversement du devenir-majeur kantien par le devenir-mineur deleuzien, c'est ce parcours qu'il devient necessaire de reconstituer. a la fin, on aura reconstruit quelques strategies emancipatrices, utiles pour nous aujourd'hui.". Foucault’s main thesis in his Introduction to Kant’s Anthropology is that the meaning of Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View can only be entirely grasped in the light of certain notes concerning the human being, assembled in the Opus Postumum. He asserts that the discourses held on human beings in the Anthropology and the introduction to the Logic are temporary – though necessary – moments in the transition from the critical to the transcendental philosophy: the latter is the accomplishment (...) of Kantian philosophy, to which the former was only a Propädeutik. In this paper I call this a ‘teleological reading’ of the Anthropology, one which certainly has the merit of integrating this book in the evolution of Kant’s thought, but which can also be misleading, since it rarely considers the book Anthropology in itself. Hence, Foucault carries out what is more of a study of ‘Kant’s philosophy from an anthropological point of view’ rather than a study of the Anthropology. In the end, I also indicate the way in which this method enables us to distinguish his philosophical position both from Heidegger’s interpretation of Kant and from Sartre’s humanism. (shrink)

This article deals with public manifestations of Catholic religious officials, members of the hierarchy and recognized laity, in the context of the discussion of the National Education Plan - PNE. The focus of the analysis is a condemnation of what they call "gender ideology", present in the proposal document. Such manifestations are the reaffirmation of a conception of human beings as subject to the inexorable "laws of nature" that determine a social order marked by the rigid distinction of roles assigned (...) to women and men. The texts published at the time reveal changes and continuities in the Catholic discourse in its reference to "nature", understood in its biological materiality, as an unswerving fact of human reality, consisting in two sexes must unite under the "natural order". Gender theories are blamed by family disintegration, for providing support to new understandings of humanity, no longer based on bipolarity: men / women. A non extensive dossier of these texts formed the basis for the proposed analyzes. (shrink)

This paper focuses on the contributions to natural history, particularly in methods of plant classification of the Portuguese botanist, man of letters, diplomat, and Freemason Abbé José Correia da Serra (1751-1823), placing them in their national and international political and social contexts. Correia da Serra adopted the natural method of classification championed by the Frenchman Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, and introduced refinements of his own that owe much to parallel developments in zoology. He endorsed the view that the classification of plants (...) should be based on the establishment of affinities rather than of differences. The emphasis on affinities went hand in hand with the development of the concept of symmetry. This idea was introduced by Correia da Serra in systematics and was adopted and further developed by his friend, Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle. Correia da Serra also argued that Cryptogamia reproduce sexually, advocated extension of methods of comparative anatomy from zoology to botany, and applied them to the study of fruits. Correia da Serra was one among many of the estrangeirados, Portuguese "Europeanized" intellectuals who traveled extensively abroad in most cases to escape political or religious persecution at home. The estrangeirados were important contributors to 18th and 19th century European thinking. Most of the estrangeirados were pivotal in the introduction, dissemination and propagation of the new sciences in Portugal, but unlike most of his fellow estrangeirados, Correia da Serra was also an innovative man of science in his own right. The increasing costs of healthcare delivery led to different political and administrative approaches trying to preserve the core values of the welfare state. This approach has well documented weaknesses namely with regard to healthcare rationing. The objective of this paper is to evaluate if independent healthcare regulation is an important tool with regard to the construction of fair processes for setting limits to healthcare. Methodologically the authors depart from Norman Daniels’ and James Sabin’s theory of accountability for reasonableness and try (...) to determine if new regulatory models—namely independent agencies—perform better with regard to the public disclosure of the reasons and rationales of healthcare rationing. In publicly financed healthcare systems independent regulation is an important tool to assure fair and reasonable procedures of prioritising services. In accordance with the principle of public accountability, independent regulatory agencies are particularly well suited to assure publicity of the decision-making processes, relevance of the rationale involved and particularly mechanisms for challenge and dispute resolution regarding limit setting decisions. It follows that independent healthcare regulation could be regarded not only as an instrument for performance improvement but also as a tool of social justice. The authors conclude by stating that accountability for reasonableness should be regarded as a landmark of any healthcare reform. And therefore regulators have the social task of assuring that the rationales for limit-setting decisions are clearly accessible to the public. (shrink)

Uncertainty with regards theacquisition of oral communicative skills.However, in the western world, available datasuggest that deafness is associated with thelowest educational level and the lowest familyincome. Notwithstanding the existence of aDeaf-World, deafness should be considered as ahandicap. Therefore, society should provide themeans for the (...) fulfilment of a deaf child'sspecific needs.For the time being there is no definitiveanswer with regard the best way to rehabilitatea particular deaf child. Therefore,communitarian values may be acceptable. If thedeaf child parents' decide not to implant,their decision should be respected. Guardiansare entitled to determine which standard ofbest interest to use in a specificcircumstance. They are the proper judges ofwhat (re)habilitation process is best for theirdeaf child. However, most deaf children areborn to two hearing parents. Probably, theywill not be acculturated in the Deaf-World. Itfollows that cochlear implantation is awelcomed (re)habilitation technology.If auditory (re)habilitation will in the futureprovide the necessary communicative skills, inparticular oral language acquisition, customs,values and attitudes of the hearing worldshould be regarded as necessary to accomplish adeaf child's right to an open future. Ifcochlear implantation technology will provideall deaf children with the capacity to developacceptable oral communicative skills –whatever the hearing status of the family andthe cultural environment – then auditory(re)habilitation will be an ethical imperative.
