    Hume’s Scepticism and Kant’s Transcendental Deduction.Paul Tulipana & Dustin King - forthcoming - Kantian Review:1-21.
Kant’s aim in the Transcendental Deduction is to prove that the a priori categories of the understanding necessarily apply to objects of experience. He claims that he will do this simply by explaining how they could so apply. But the idea that a mere explanation of this possibility should provide a defence of the categories’ actual (let alone necessary) applicability is surprising. We argue that it can be understood by attending to the source of the scepticism that the Critique’s Analytic (...)

    Sexual Selection Revisited — Towards a Gender-Neutral Theory and Practice: A Response to Vandermassen's `Sexual Selection: A Tale of Male Bias and Feminist Denial'.Malin Ah-King - 2007 - European Journal of Women's Studies 14 (4):341-348.
In a recent issue of this journal, Vandermassen suggested that feminists should include sexual selection theory and evolutionary psychology in a unifying theory of human nature. In response, this article aims to offer some insight into the development of sexual selection theory, to caution against Vandermassen's unreserved assimilation and to promote the opposite ongoing integration — an inclusion of gender perspectives into evolutionary biology. In society today, opinions about maintaining traditional sex roles are often put forward on the basis of (...)

Bertrand Russell on Economics, 1889–1918.J. E. King - 2014 - Russell: The Journal of Bertrand Russell Studies 25 (1).
Bertrand Russell was perhaps the last great philosopher to take an active interest in economics. After a brief, youthful engagement with the economics of socialism in 1889, Russell wrote on economic questions in three separate periods up to 1918, and in each case there was a clear political motivation. The first, in 1895–96, arose from his investigation of Marxism as a creed and of German social democracy as its principal contemporary political expression. The second, in 1903–04, was provoked by his (...)

The structure of social theory.Anthony King - 2004 - New York: Routledge.
Over the last three decades, social theory has become an increasingly important subdiscipline within sociology. Social theory has attempted to elucidate the philosophical basis of sociology by defining the nature of social reality. According to social theory, society consists of objective institutions, structure, on the one hand, and individuals, agency on the other, it promotes human social relations, insisting that in every instance social reality consists of these relations.

    Dissimulation.Matthew King - 2020 - Angelaki 25 (6):108-121.
Patterns in contemporary conflict highlight the failures of traditional views of the relationship between humanity and technology. This paper proposes that modern conflict is characterized by something called “dissimulation,” referring to numerous phenomena together emphasizing the inadequacies of conceiving man as the overseeing creator of technological advancement. It shows rather that man, particularly man in conflict, is always already implicated and concealed within complex technological networks and mediums, wherein humanity is just another player amongst others. This paper diagnoses and defines (...)

The Ideology of Order: A Comparative Analysis of Jean Bodin and Thomas Hobbes.Preston T. King - 1974 - London: Allen & Unwin.
A school of thought traceable to the political writings of Bodin and Hobbes believes that "order" is the cardinal principle which takes precedence over "justice" - which is reduced to conformity. The main concern of this book is to analyse this tradition through study of its progenitors.

    Abelard's Answers to Porphyry.Peter King - 2007 - Documenti E Studi Sulla Tradizione Filosofica Medievale 18:249-270.

  30. Readings in african philosophy.Peter King - manuscript
Some years ago I reviewed a collection of papers called African Philosophy: The Essential Readings , edited by Serequeberhan. My last comment in that review was the expression of the hope for collections of papers that would give an insight into what's going on in African philosophy, rather than into the debate over the existence and nature of African philosophy. My concern is echoed by the last line of a letter printed in the present volume of readings: "Hitherto most of (...)

Between Justice and Money: How the Covid-19 Crisis was used to De-Differentiate Legality in Ecuador.Katiuska King & Philipp Altmann - 2022 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 35 (3):1039-1057.
Legality in the Global South suffers from problems of application by convenience. Some rules are applied, and some are not, depending on certain actors, such as the State, the stakeholders, or others. This undermines legitimation as constructed by legality and due process. These problems are connected to a wider complex formed by coloniality, internal colonialism, and a form of functional differentiation that limits autonomy of the different social systems. This complex of structural properties allows States and other actors to systematically (...)

Conversation on Conversation: Maieutic Dialogue and Exponential Power in Creative Work.Bob King - 2023 - The Journal of Aesthetic Education 57 (1):85-97.
Abstract:This article examines the role of maieutic dialogue and exponential power in creative work. Its thesis is that maieutic dialogue is the engine that drives the creative process, and exponential power is the engine that informs maieutic dialogue. The legacy of Socrates is rehabilitated, and then his example is used as a clinic to rehabilitate the legacies of Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and creative artists in general. Implications for aesthetic education are alluded to in a concluding section.

[14.18] But if there were to be a contract in which neither of the contractors is obliged to perform immediately, but rather at a definite future date, that covenant in the pure condition of nature (i. e. in war) is invalid if any suspicion about performance should intervene: in the commonwealth, not likewise. For he who performs first is, in the first case, uncertain whether the other will perform; in the commonwealth he is certain, since there is [something] to compel (...)

This is the first investigation of one of the main interests of astronomy in Islamic civilization, namely, timekeeping by the sun and stars and the regulation of the astronomically-defined times of Muslim prayer. The study is based on over 500 medieval astronomical manuscripts first identified by the author, now preserved in libraries all over the world and originally from the entire Islamic world from the Maghrib to Central Asia and the Yemen.
