Among the extensive literature on the first Critique, very few commentators offer a thorough analysis of Kant's conception of inner sense. This is quite surprising since the notion is central to Kant's theoretical philosophy, and it is very difficult to provide a consistent interpretation of this notion. In this paper, I first summarize Kant's claims about inner sense in the Transcendental Aesthetic and show why existing interpretations have been unable to dissolve the tensions arising from the conjunction of these claims. (...) Secondly, I present my own reconstruction of Kant's model of inner sense, relying essentially on Kantian considerations found in the B-version of the Transcendental Deduction. My main idea is that inner sense, for Kant, is a passive faculty that gets affected by the understanding performing its figurative synthesis on material given in outer sense. In the remainder of the paper, I highlight a few consequences of my interpretation and outline ways to deal with some objections. (shrink)

This paper is one of the four interrelated action agenda papers resulting from the National Summit on Public Health Legal Preparedness convened in June 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and multi-disciplinary partners. Each of the action agenda papers deals with one of the four core elements of legal preparedness: laws and legal authorities; competency in using those laws; coordination of law-based public health actions; and information. Options presented in this paper are for consideration by policymakers and (...) practitioners — in all jurisdictions and all relevant sectors and disciplines — with responsibilities for all-hazards emergency preparedness.One expert's framing of the mission of public health may help improve understanding of the range of hazards for which to be legally prepared. These hazards include urgent realities — such as chronic disease, injury, disabilities, conventional communicable diseases, and an aging and obese population — and urgent threats, such as pandemic influenza, natural disasters, and terrorism. Ziel der Arbeit ist zu zeigen, dass sich in der theoretischen Philosophie David Humes Ansätze zu einer therapeutischen Methode finden, wie sie von Ludwig Wittgenstein angewandt und beschrieben wurde. Im ersten Teil wird Wittgensteins Konzeption der Philosophie und ihre Anwendung anhand einer genauen Textexegese dargestellt. Der zweite Teil untersucht primär die Humeschen Überlegungen zu Kausalität und Induktion, seine methodologischen Aussagen sowie seine Perzeptionstheorie und argumentiert für die These, dass Hume ebenfalls, wenn auch mit Einschränkungen, Elemente einer therapeutischen Methode und eine (...) entsprechende Konzeption der Philosophie zugeschrieben werden können. In the paper author discusses ideas of L. Wittgenstein who renounced formalism which was characteristic of the "Tractatus" epoch. The change is connected with the adoption of a different conception of language which refers, among other, problems to the new approach to "generality" (e.g. to generalized sentences). Wittgenstein rejected the proposition of analytical reductionism which is a conviction that it is possible to reduce and analyse "generality". He changed his opinion connected with the theory of meaning. The problems discussed above, (...) dealt with by earlier conceptions of Frege and Russell belong to important problems of the philosophy of logic and the philosophy of language. (shrink)

Die Fähigkeit eines Wesens zum moralischen Handeln ist in einigen tierethischen Theorien ein entscheidendes Kriterium dafür, wie stark wir das Wesen moralisch berücksichtigen müssen. Moralische Handlungsfähigkeit setzt nach klassischem Verständnis die Fähigkeit der Vernunft voraus. Entsprechend haben Wesen mit moralischer Handlungsfähigkeit in denjenigen Theorien einen Sonderstatus, die die Vernunft als wichtiges Kriterium ansehen – Tiere werden auf dieser Grundlage aus der vollen Berücksichtigung ausge­schlossen. An dieser Bevorzugung von vernünftigen Wesen wird zugleich scharfe Kritik geübt. Einflussreiche Theorien der neueren Tierethik heben (...) andere Eigenschaften wie insbesondere die Empfindungsfähigkeit als entscheidendes Kriterium für die moralische Berücksichtigungswürdigkeit hervor. Auch Vertreter und Vertreterinnen derartiger Theorien können allerdings zugestehen, dass die moralische Handlungsfähigkeit mit spezifischen moralischen Ansprüchen einhergeht. In jüngster Zeit wird außerdem die klassische Verknüpfung von moralischer Handlungsfähigkeit und Vernunft in Frage gestellt und Tieren wird aufgrund von kooperativem oder altruistischen Verhalten eine gewisse Moralfähigkeit zugeschrieben. If we accept the idea that the value of a “logic” depends on its ability to fit the usual meaning of the “logical constants” which it formalises and the inferences we draw on their basis, we may ask if the meaning of “possible” is well captured by normal modal logic. We are faced with the following puzzle: if is meaningful and non contradictory is it not a logical truth that ? First, it is shown why there is no logical law (...) of the form , being a neutral wff, and then some philosophical conclusions are drawn: “possible” relative to truth must be distinguished from possible “relative” to meaning, and the former only is formalised in modal logic. Der Begriff ›Sport‹ bezeichnet eine Familie von typischerweise körperlichen Aktivitäten, die zu Wettkampf-, Unterhaltungs- und/oder Gesundheitszwecken betrieben werden. Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Sportarten, in denen Tiere eingesetzt und zu diesem Zweck meist eigens gezüchtet und speziellem Training unterzogen werden. Dabei lassen sich Sportarten, bei denen Menschen und Tiere in irgendeiner Form gemeinsam agieren, unterscheiden von Sportarten, in denen Tiere allein gegeneinander eingesetzt werden – sei es im Wettstreit um Schnelligkeit oder in Kämpfen. Außerdem werden auch Aktivitäten als Sport bezeichnet, (...) in denen Menschen gegen Tiere antreten, wobei das Ziel in der Unterwerfung oder Tötung der Tiere besteht: Stierkampf, Rodeo; ebenso werden Jagd und Angeln teilweise als Sport angesehen, insofern sie nicht primär externen Zwecken wie der Ernährung dienen.
