This paper is organised as follows: first, I present Salmon’s theory of modality and compare it with the standard interpretation of modality: ‘the nonrelativized S5-friendly interpretation of metaphysical modality’. Second, I explain Murray and Wilson’s ‘two-dimensional S5-friendly interpretation of relativized metaphysical modality’. In the third and last part, I put forward a few arguments against Murray and Wilson’s attempt to provide an essentialist S5-friendly theory for modality. In general, this paper argues that if one wants to hold an essentialist (...) theory for relativized modality, then his best option in the market right now is to stick with Salmon’s proposal, which better represents a genuine essentialist interpretation of relativized metaphysical modality. The philosophical theory of scientific explanation proposed here involves a radically new treatment of causality that accords with the pervasively statistical character of contemporary science. Wesley C. Salmon describes three fundamental conceptions of scientific explanation--the epistemic, modal, and ontic. He argues that the prevailing view is untenable and that the modal conception is scientifically out-dated. Significantly revising aspects of his earlier work, he defends a causal/mechanical theory that is a version of the ontic conception. Professor Salmon's theory furnishes (...) a robust argument for scientific realism akin to the argument that convinced twentieth-century physical scientists of the existence of atoms and molecules. To do justice to such notions as irreducibly statistical laws and statistical explanation, he offers a novel account of physical randomness. The transition from the "reviewed view" of scientific explanation to the causal/mechanical model requires fundamental rethinking of basic explanatory concepts. (shrink)

This paper presents a drastically revised version of the theory of causality, based on analyses of causal processes and causal interactions, advocated in Salmon (1984). Relying heavily on modified versions of proposals by P. Dowe, this article answers penetrating objections by Dowe and P. Kitcher to the earlier theory. It shows how the new theory circumvents a host of difficulties that have been raised in the literature. The result is, I hope, a more satisfactory analysis of physical causality.

Reichenbach sought to resolve Hume's problem of the justification of induction by means of a pragmatic vindication that relies heavily on the convergence properties of his rule of induction. His attempt to rule out all other asymptotic methods by an appeal to descriptive simplicity was unavailing. We found that important progress in that direction could be made by invoking normalizing conditions (consistency) and methodological simplicity (as a basis for invariance), but that they did not do the whole job. Tras la llegada de los conquistadores españoles y durante los dos siglos del reinado de su monopolio, no se permitió el ingreso de extranjeros y la población permaneció distribuida en las regiones, en proporciones casi inversas a las actuales. Con la caída del régimen español y los avances del monopolio inglés, comenzó a desplazarse el centro territorial argentino desde el Noroeste hacia el Litoral y a producirse variaciones en la dinámica demográfica. El establecimiento del modelo agroexportador produjo una afluencia excepcional (...) de inmigrantes de ultramar, que generaron cambios vertiginosos en la estructura de la población. Asimismo, el fin del modelo agroexportador que provocó la abrupta interrupción del flujo inmigratorio de ultramar, generó nuevamente otro intenso cambio demográfico que incidió en la estructura poblacional hasta la actualidad. Este artículo se centra en el movimiento migratorio que produjo el modelo agroexportador, con el objetivo de analizar sus efectos en el ritmo de crecimiento de la población, en la distribución de las variables demográficas básicas —sexo y edad—, y en los cambios en la distribución espacial, siendo su fuente principal los censos nacionales de población realizados hasta la actualidad. Este artículo reconstruye la definición de “forma” ofrecida en La estructura del comportamiento. Luego se evalúan dos interpretaciones posibles: una realista y otra denominada “idealista”. Se sostiene que la primera no logra explicar la originalidad de los distintos tipos de formas y, en consecuencia, tampoco su carácter noemático (ser para una conciencia), mientras que la segunda resulta incompatible con el carácter descriptivo (no antropomórfico) de las Gestalten y conduce a una concepción de la naturaleza que resulta problemática respecto de la (...) posición merleau-pontyana. Se propone una tercera interpretación: el concepto de “dialéctica”, tal como es utilizado por Merleau-Ponty para definir los órdenes físico, vital y humano, justifica una ampliación de los conceptos de “naturaleza” y de “conciencia” que permite conjugar el carácter descriptivo y noemático. Con base en ello, se concluye que las formas pueden ser identificadas con el proceso de fenomenalización de la naturaleza. (shrink)

Anhand der kritischen Diskussion relevanter Texte von Platon und Aristoteles wird versucht, eine eigentümliche sophistische Logos-Form zu rekonstruieren. Der Konflikt zwischen Sophistik und Philosophie wird als ein Konflikt zwischen einer parametrischen und einer strategischen Rationalitätsform dargestellt.

The Euthydemus offers important elements of Platonic thought, from which emerges the need to study philosophy in order to achieve a good life. This article offers a brief introduction to this work of Plato. It then presents an analysis of several ideas that appear throughout the discussion, putting special emphasis on those dealing, directly or indirectly, with the main theme of the Dialogue . It concludes with a synthesis of the arguments given in the work.

In "'Yes" and "No'" (2000), Ian Rumfitt proposed bilateralism--a use-based account of the logical words, according to which the sense of a sentence is determined by the conditions under which it is asserted and denied. One of Rumfitt's key claims is that bilateralism can provide a justification of classical logic. This paper raises a techical problem for Rumfitt's proposal, one that seems to undermine the bilateralist programme.

In this candid autobiographical essay, Nathan Salmon recounts and assesses the impact of various philosophers and events on his philosophical development.

Commuting conversions were introduced in the natural deduction calculus as ad hoc devices for the purpose of guaranteeing the subformula property in normal proofs. In a well known book, Jean-Yves Girard commented harshly on these conversions, saying that ‘one tends to think that natural deduction should be modified to correct such atrocities.’ We present an embedding of the intuitionistic predicate calculus into a second-order predicative system for which there is no need for commuting conversions. Furthermore, we show that the redex (...) and the conversum of a commuting conversion of the original calculus translate into equivalent derivations by means of a series of bidirectional applications of standard conversions. Faremos um breve excurso pelo uso desse termo por um autor pagão, Epicteto, e por dois autores cristãos, Atanásio de Alexandria e Basílio de Cesaréia, antes de chegarmos até o seu uso em Agostinho de Hipona, pensador no qual o (...) conceito já adquiriu o valor positivo de humildade, uma virtude (areté) concebida como essencial, pois assinala uma característica do próprio Cristo e, por conseguinte, fundamental para o Cristianismo. In Frege’s logicism, numbers are logical objects in the sense that they are extensions of certain concepts. Frege’s logical system is inconsistent, but Richard Heck showed that its restriction to predicative quantification is consistent. This predicative fragment is, nevertheless, too weak to develop arithmetic. In this paper, I will consider an extension of Heck’s system with impredicative quantifiers. In this extended system, both predicative and impredicative quantifiers co-exist but it is only permissible to take extensions of concepts formulated in the (...) predicative fragment of the language. This system is consistent. Moreover, it proves the principle of reducibility applied to concepts true of only finitely many objects. With the aid of this form of reducibility, it is possible to develop arithmetic in a thoroughly Fregean way. (shrink)

This paper discusses theoretical issues concerning the topic of subjectivity as it has been recently developed within a cultural – historical framework. This provides a new theoretical and epistemological basis to this issue that does not lead to the misinterpretations of subjectivity found in the modern philosophical approaches to theorizing consciousness. This paper builds on interpretations related to Vygotsky’s theory of consciousness that do not follow the current dominant interpretations in Western Psychology. The analyses take departure in the concept of (...) ‘sense’ introduced by Vygotsky at the end of his work and proceeds to propose the concept of subjective sense as the corner stone for the study of subjectivity. The concept of subjective configuration is discussed and finally, the concept of social subjectivity is introduced understood as those symbolic processes and subjective senses that characterize social scenarios and institutions. Research has demonstrated that policing is a stressful occupation and has a negative impact on police officers’ mental and physical health, performance, and interactions with citizens. Mental health at the workplace has become a concern due to the costs of depression, anxiety, burnout, and even suicide, which is high among police officers.To ameliorate occupational health, it is crucial therefore to identify stress and burnout levels on a regular basis. However, the instruments frequently used to measure stress have not valorized the (...) specificity of policing tasks. This study aims: i) conducting a literature review, to identify questionnaires used to assess occupational stress and burnout among police officers; ii) to analyze the psychometric characteristics of a Portuguese version of Operational Police Stress Questionnaire (PSQ-Op); and, using the PSQ-op and other questionnaires, iii) to identify operational stress, burnout, and distress levels among Portuguese police officers. The literature review identified 108 studies, which use a multiplicity of questionnaires to measure burnout or occupational stress among police officers, but few studies use specific police stress questionnaires. Sample sizes were mostly below 500 participants and studies were mainly developed in the last decade in the USA and Brazil, but also in another 24 countries, showing the extent of the interest in this topic. This study applied to 2057 police officers from National Portuguese Police, a force policing urban centers, the PSQ-Op, as well the Spanish Burnout Inventory and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale.The results show that the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of PSQ-Op are adequate. Factorial analysis revealed two dimensions defined as social and work issues, which were associated with measures of distress and burnout.Fit indices suggested a second-order solution called operational police stress. Overall, and considering the scale range of each questionnaire, the results showed moderate values of operational stress, distress, and burnout. However, considering their cut-off points, 85% of the sample presented high operational stress levels, 11% critical values for burnout, and 28% high distress levels, with 55% of the sample at risk of psychological disorder. These results reinforce the need to prevent stress and to invest in police officers’ occupational health. (shrink)

A modal logic for translating a sequence of English sentences to a sequence of logical forms is presented, characterized by Kripke models with points formed from input/output sequences, and valuations determined by entailment relations. Previous approaches based (to one degree or another) on Quantified Dynamic Logic are embeddable within it. Applications to presupposition and ambiguity are described, and decision procedures and axiomatizations supplied.

Previous studies (Salmon 1999; Salmon and Daly 1998) have found that sex and birth order are strong predictors of familial sentiments. Middleborns tend to be less family-oriented than firstborns or lastborns, while sex differences seem to focus on the utility of kin in certain domains. If this is a reflection of middleborns receiving a lesser degree of support from kin (particularly in terms of parental investment), are middleborns turning to reciprocal alliances outside the family, becoming friendship specialists? Are (...) there comparable birth order differences with respect to mating strategies? In this study, the impact of birth order on attitudes toward family, friends, and mating were examined. Two hundred and forty-five undergraduates completed a questionnaire relating to their attitudes toward friends and family as well as some aspects of mating behavior. Birth order did have a significant impact in several areas. Middleborns expressed more positive views toward friends and less positive opinions of family in general. They were less inclined to help family in need than firstborns or lastborns. Mating strategies also appeared to be influenced by birth order, most notably in the area of infidelity, with middleborns being the least likely birth order to cheat on a sexual partner. (shrink)

Inertia is enshrined in Newton’s first law of motion, a body at rest or in uniform motion remains in that state unless a force is applied to it. Now, consider (1). (1) Pat stopped the car before it hit the tree. Can we conclude from (1) that the car struck the tree? Not without further information such as that supplied in (2). (2) But the bus behind kept going. A post-condition for Pat stopping the car is that the car be (...) at rest. To satisfy a pre-condition for the car hitting the tree (namely, that the car not be at rest), inertia requires that some intervening force act on the car (as hinted, for example, by (2)). In the absence of such a force, (1) would appear to suggest that Pat prevented a collision between car and tree. Exactly what bit of physics are we importing into natural language interpretation here? Oversimplified, Newton’s first law of motion says: no change without force. This article delves into the philosophical theses on law and ethics as presented by Thomas Hobbes and Immanuel Kant, with a focus on the notion of resistance in a legal context. It contrasts Hobbes’ advocacy for nearly unrestricted state authority and a morality closely tied to the state, against Kant’s emphasis on moral law and natural rights as the underpinnings of legality. A pivotal discussion point is Kant’s perceived contradiction in supporting a fundamental right to freedom while limiting the right (...) to resist laws that infringe upon this freedom. By comparing these philosophical authors, the article posits that Kant’s theory of resistance requires integration with his broader ethical views, suggesting that human rights should constrain positive law. Finite-state methods are applied to determine the consequences of events, represented as strings of sets of fluents. Developed to flesh out events used in natural language semantics, the approach supports reasoning about action in AI, including the frame problem and inertia. Representational and inferential aspects of the approach are explored, centering on conciseness of language, context update and constraint application with bias.

Em diversas ocasiões, foram feitas consultas a diversas instância da comunidade sobre o quê e em que todas as vezes a discussão ficou retida em algum ponto sem que houvesse um progresso, nos passos seguintes. A rigor, a única mudança visível em todo esse período foi a eliminação das provas finais do semestre. Um dos argumentos que emergiam, na época, foi o de que um aluno da UFU estaria em desigualdade de condições de competição, ao concorrer por uma vaga no mercado de trabalho, quando comparado com algum aluno de outra Universidade que tivesse um grau de exigência maior. RESUMEN Se comparan críticamente las teorías del condicionamiento y la expectativa. Se retoma la propuesta de Oron Frenkel a fin de juzgar si la noción de intencionalidad motriz permite establecer un marco teórico superador de las deficiencias de dichas teorías. Finalmente, se analiza la categoría de forma y los órdenes físico, vital y humano, propuestos en La estructura del comportamiento, como abordajes alternativos. La conclusión destaca el valor de la experiencia del paciente en los ensayos y plantea la posibilidad de (...) redefinir la noción tradicional de conciencia entendida como formación de representaciones y juicios. ABSTRACT The article carries out a critical comparison of the theories of conditioning and expectation. It takes up Oron Frenkel's proposal in order to determine whether the notion of motor intentionality makes it possible to establish a theoretical framework that overcomes the deficiencies of those theories. Finally, it analyzes the category of form and the physical, vital, and human orders set forth in The Structure of Behavior as alternative approaches. Te conclusion highlights the value of the patient's experience in trials, and suggest the possibility of redefining the traditional notion of consciousness understood as the formation of representations and judgments.
