Mankind's constant struggle with physical as well as mental weaknesses is omnipresent in ancient literature: misconduct, wrongdoing, failure and experiences of contingency are anthropological phenomena. Ancient ethics, epistemology, and natural philosophy have developed different theoretical approaches and guidelines on how to act and how to overcome all kinds of problems. Christian theology, on the other hand, has explained moral failure as a symptom of original sin, comparing decline and destruction to a burden from which mankind is relieved only at the (...) end. The contributions explore how ancient philosophical texts, both pagan and Christian, explain, conceptualize and integrate the myriad manifestations of human fallibility into the different philosophical schools. The focus is on anthropological, ontological and theological concepts that analyse and reflect human fallibility, as well as on the textual and linguistic representation of the phenomenon in ancient literature. Several contributions in the volume explore literary texts that discuss or illustrate the philosophical dimension of fallibility, such as satire's or tragedy's (often exaggerated) depiction of human weakness. English summary: Questions about the origins and reality of good and evil and about their mutual relationship play a central part in the history of philosophy and religion from their very beginning. Giving answers to these questions had a decisive influence on how the world and its civilization(s) as well as human beings and their ethics were perceived in their relations to higher beings (god or gods). The contributions within this conference volume illustrate which concepts regarding these questions were developed (...) in ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean, from the early literatures of Egypt and Mesopotamia, Iran and Greece to biblical, Qumranic and ancient Christian texts as well as the writings of the Manichaeans and the Quran. Thus this volume gives a representative overview of the responses of the ancient world to one of the fundamental questions of mankind. Eine geistliche Schwester erkrankte ungefähr mit 22 Jahren erstmalig an einer Erscheinung, die ihr - optisch - den Tod des Vaters und seine Himmelsfahrt verkündete. Ohne Zweifel fühlte sie sich selbst bereits damals- wie es für 1966 sicher angenommen werden kann - als eine von Gott Ausersehene. Die Himmelsfahrt des Vaters ist Ausdruck ihrer hohen Abkunft. Drei Jahre später glaubte sie eine Heilige zu sein, die Leiden anderer auf sich nehmen zu können, wurde von Glauben und Hoffnung geführt, glaubte Christus (...) in sich zu haben und mit Gott auf Du und Du zu stehen. Sie hielt es aber nicht durch, fiel tief, bekam Schuldgefühle, fühlte sich verdammt, ewig verloren. Es kam zu keiner Vollremission, sie konnte in einer untergeordneten Stelle aber wieder arbeiten, obgleich sie Schwierigkeiten in der sozialen Eingliederung hatte, auch eine gewisse Leistungsinsuffizienz und geringe Belastbarkeit sich herausstelle. Zwei Jahre später kurzes Recidiv nach einem aufwühlenden Film . Wieder glaubte sie durch Versenkung anderen helfen zu können im Sinne der kleinen Therese. Die große Therese war die bedeutendste Mystikerin, die kleine Therese - die die Pat. wohl meinte - war bekannt durch ihre Wunderheilungen auf Grund ihrer Fürbitte. Sie glaubte auserkoren gewesen zu sein, versagt zu haben, von den anderen diesbezüglich nicht verstanden zu sein - nicht einmal im eigenen Orden. Die Ideen traten aber nach Abklingen der Phasen jeweils wieder in den Hintergrund, der Alltag nahm sie wieder gefangen. Nach weiteren zwei Jahren weitgehende Remission, arbeitete wieder unauffällig. Es ist ohne Zweifel und jedermann ersichtlich, daß hier zunächst auffallende Ähnlichkeiten bestehen. Einmal ist es ein Mensch, der durch den drohenden Tod transzendenten Dingen aufgeschlossen wird, ein anderes Mal betrifft es eine Person, die durch ihren erwählten geistlichen Beruf von vorneherein solchen Dingen gegenüber aufgeschlossen ist. Beide erleben optische Visionen, aber ebenso eine gewisse Verunsicherung ihrer bisherigen Lebens-situation. Ignatius schwankte zwischen Fortführung des weltlichen Lebens und einem neuen geistlichen Leben. Schwester L. fühlte sich zunächst als Spielball Gottes. Beide fühlen sich aber dann als eine von Gott ausersehene, berufene Person. Glaube, Vertrauen und Hoffnung sind für beide Tragpfeiler ihres Lebens, die von ihnen gewünschten Tugenden. Beide strebten danach, Christus bei sich zu haben. Jede erlebte eine Depression mit Schuldgefühlen, Skrupeln, Gefühl der Verdammtheit bzw. dem Gefühl, der Versuchung durch einen Teufel erlegen zu sein. Beide befürchten ihr neues Ich nicht verwirklichen zu können. Es wird so deutlich - und dies ließe sich an Hand ähnlicher Fälle anderer Heiliger oder anderer religiöser Wahnideen ebenso nachweisen - daß der Beginn in all diesen Fällen weitgehend derselbe war. Immer ist es zunächst ein passives Erleben, ein Hereinbrechen eines "Ganz-Anderen" und ein persönliches Betroffensein des Ich. Eine Welt tut sich in einer solchen Situation auf, die nicht mit Ratio oder Logik faßbar ist, viel eher dem Geschehen einer Innenschau verglichen werden kann. Bei Ignatius kam es nun aber anschließend zweimal zu Wandlungserlebnissen im Sinne einer Erleuchtung, großen Klarheit im Verstande, die ihm seine neue Aufgabe und Rolle in der menschlichen Gemeinschaft nicht nur deutlich machten, sondern ihn auch in dieser Position sicher machten. Seine geistliche Hilfe bot er seinen Mitmenschen unzählige Male in Predigten und Aussprachen an und er wurde als geistlicher Führer auch überall angenommen. Durch ihn kam es zu einer sehr bedeutenden Ordensgründung für viele Jahrhunderte und zu einer Schaffung zahlreicher frommer Werke. Dies alles blieb bei der Patientin Schwester L. aus. Sie war zur Zeit ihrer Visionen unfähig, ihren Alltagspflichten im Kindergarten nachzukommen, sie fühlte sich von weltlichen wie geistlichen Personen unverstanden. Ein nachfolgendes Reifungserlebnis blieb völlig aus, wie der nun jahrelange Verlauf nachher deutlich macht. Es ist also der Verlauf, der uns jederzeit eine Differentialdiagnose leicht macht. Die Erleuchtung allein könnte auch im Rahmen von manischen Größenideen bei einem Kranken auftreten. Die Erleuchtung bei Ignatius war aber verbunden mit Taten von großer Bedeutung wie der Errichtung frommer Werke, Stiftungen von Satzungen, Tröstung vieler Menschen durch geistliche Gespräche etc. Es zweifelt heute niemand daran, daß durch seine Tat ein Werk von jahrhundertelanger Bedeutung errichtet wurde. Darüber hinaus ist er auch selbst ein Mensch mit einer neuen Freiheit geworden, innere Zufriedenheit, Ausgeglichenheit und menschliche Größe kennzeichnen ein solches Bild. Bei Schwester L. war es aber so, daß sie neben der Vernachlässigung ihrer Alltagspflichten auch in keiner Weise fähig war anderen zu helfen, etwa dasLeid anderer auf sich zu nehmen, wie sie es sich vorstellte. Sie war im Gegenteil eine Belastung für die anderen Schwestern dieser geistlichen Gemeinschaft. Schwester L. zog sich von den Mitmenschen zurück, während Ignatius unter die Menschen ging, um sie aufzurichten. Schwester L. war in ihrer psychotischen Phase emotionell eingeengt, intentional - zu-mindestens teilweise - gelähmt und in ihrer persönlichen Freiheit ohne Zweifel gemindert. Demgegenüber war Ignatius von Loyola besonders tief empfindend, er verfügte über unendlich große - "überirdische" - Kräfte, die es ihm ermöglichten, nicht nur viel Leid mitzutragen, sondern darüber hinaus ein großes geistliches Werk aufzubauen. Dieses sein neues Ich machte irdische Freuden hinfällig, es ermöglichte ihm eine tiefere Wahrheit zu sehen, zu erleben und zu verwirklichen. Der Wahn bei Schwester L. ließ sie aber bestenfalls eine tiefere Wahrheit sehen, aber es war ihr nicht möglich dies so zu erleben, daß sie es auch verwirklichen konnte. Ignatius von Loyola hatte Vertrauen zur Welt und die Welt zu ihm, während Schwester L. dieses Vertrauen verloren hatte, sich in sich zurückzog, unverstanden fühlte und tatenlos blieb. Gerade auf diesen Vertrauensverlust auf der Seite des Kranken und Vertrauensgewinn auf der Seite des Heiligen weist G. Hole mit besonderer Deutlichkeit hin. Man könnte mit anderen Worten auch sagen: Es entscheidet sich nicht sofort, was aus einem Geschehen wird, das sich in der Transzendenz ereignet und ich-bezogen erlebt wird. Es kann zu einer neuen Selbstverwirklichung, zu einer Reifung der Person und größeren Freiheit führen. Es kann aber ebensogut zu einer Einbuße der Freiheit führen, in dem die Person nur mehr der Wahnidee verhaftet bleibt und dann nicht mehr über sich oder über andere Möglichkeiten einer Weltbetrachtung bzw. eines Welterlebens verfügen kann. Es ist wie mit der Kreativität in künstlerischer Hinsicht. Im Beginn einer Psychose können bemerkenswerte Kunstwerke entstehen. Bei einer länger bestehenden Psychose werden aber auch die Kunstwerke den Stempel der Stereotypie tragen, wenig Einfallsreichtum zeigen und ihre künstlerische Aussage wird meist geringer werden. Der Vergleich eines Glaubenserlebnisses bei einem Heiligen mit dem religiösen Wahn bei einer geistlichen Schwester ergibt charakteristische Ähnlichkeiten, wie sie vor allem am Beginn vorhanden sind, und charakteristische Differenzen, wie sie vor allem aus dem Verlauf ersichtlich werden. Die Ähnlichkeiten bestehen darin, daß ein Ereignis auf das Ich von Außen hereinbricht, es verändert, sodaß durch dieses Ereignis ein neues Ich wird. Die Differenz besteht darin, daß dieses neue Ich entweder eine gereiftere, dem Geschehen in der Welt und noch mehr in der Transzendenz aufgeschlossenere Person sein wird, oder es wird eine Person sein, die ein solches Erlebnis innerlich nicht verarbeiten konnte und daran zerbricht. Der Wahnkranke wird zwar dem Erlebnis verbunden bleiben wie bei einem Glaubenserlebnis, er wird aber im Gegensatz zum letzteren an innerer Freiheit verloren haben. So wird der Wahn zu einem Torso bzw. Defekt der Person führen, während im ersteren Fall eine vollkommenere Stufe des Mensch-Seins entsteht. (shrink)

Keineswegs verschwindet die diesseits orientierte Lehre Epikurs trotz wachsendem Streben der Philosophie nach Transzendenz in der Spatantike. As for Avicenna the human soul is a complete substance which does not inhere in the body nor is imprinted in it, asserting its survival after the death of the body seems easy. Yet, he needs the body to explain its individuation. The paper analyzes Avicenna's arguments in the De anima sections, V, 3 & 4, of the Shifā ' in order to explore the exact causal relation there is between the human soul and its body and confronts these arguments (...) with relevant passages in the Metaphysics. It argues that the causal relation between body and soul remains obscure and that, though Avicenna claims that there is a personal immortality and that the disembodied soul remains individuated, he does not provide a satisfactory ontological account for it. It is often assumed that most people want their life to be “meaningful”. But what exactly does this mean? Though numerous research have documented which factors lead people to experience their life as meaningful and people’s theories about the best ways to secure a meaningful life, investigations in people’s concept of meaningful life are scarce. In this paper, we investigate the folk concept of a meaningful life by studying people’s third-person attribution of meaningfulness. We draw on hypotheses from the philosophical (...) literature, and notably on the work of Susan Wolf (Study 1) and an objection Antti Kauppinen raised against it (Study 2). In Study 1, we find that individuals who are successful, competent, and engaged in valuable and important goals are considered to have more meaningful lives. In Study 2, we find that the perceived meaningfulness of a life does not depend only on its components, but also on how its elements are ordered and how it forms a coherent whole (the “narrative shape” of this life). Additionally, our results stress the importance of morality in participants’ assessments of meaningfulness. Overall, our results highlight the fruitfulness of drawing on the philosophical literature to investigate the folk concept of meaningful life. (shrink)

This essay examines Henry of Ghent's reaction to the Thomistic criticism of the Au-gustinian theory of divine illumination. By grounding epistemology in the psychology of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas made divine illumination appear to be an unwieldy theory incorrect in its basic assumptions. Even though Henry reworked the Augustinian theory, he did not completely reject the Aristotelian-Thomistic epistemology. Unlike so many of his predecessors, Henry did not attempt to avoid difficult questions raised by the fallibility of sense experience in developing his (...) epistemology. Rather, he attempted to synthesize the intellectualist tendencies of the Augustinian theory with some of the empirical concerns of the Aristotelian-Thomistic account of human knowledge. Henry moved away from the strict metaphor of illumination, while at the same time exploring the relationship between the divine art and the human agent intellect. He was thus able to retain much of the Aristotelian terminology and still defend what he understood to be Augustine's intention for the doctrine of illumination. (shrink)

_The Consulting Room and Beyond _is not a typical example of clinical writing in the field of psychoanalysis. Therese Ragen, pushing the boundaries of the genre, thoughtfully explores in a very immediate way the intersubjective nature of psychoanalysis, particularly looking at the role of the psychoanalyst’s subjectivity, both how it influences and is influenced by the psychoanalytic relationship. The profound ways in which analyst and patient affect each other are captured as the author moves from a moment with a (...) patient, to one of her own memories, to a dream, to a professional consultation and back to the session with the patient. The eleventh-century philosopher and physician Abu Ali ibn Sina (d. A.D. 1037) was known in the West by his Latinized name Avicenna. An analysis of the sources and evolution of Avicenna's metaphysics, this book focuses on the answers he and his predecessors gave to two fundamental pairs of questions: what is the soul and how does it cause the body; and what is God and how does He cause the world? To respond to these challenges, Avicenna invented new concepts and (...) distinctions and reinterpreted old ones. The author concludes that Avicenna's innovations are a turning point in the history of metaphysics. Avicenna's metaphysics is the culmination of a period of synthesis during which philosophers fused together a Neoplatonic project (reconciling Plato with Aristotle) with a Peripatetic project (reconciling Aristotle with himself). Avicenna also stands at the beginning of a period during which philosophers sought to integrate the Arabic version of the earlier synthesis with Islamic doctrinal theology (kalam). Avicenna's metaphysics significantly influenced European scholastic thought, but it had an even more profound impact on Islamic intellectual history--the philosophical problems and opportunities associated with the Avicennian synthesis continued to be debated up to the end of the nineteenth century. I argue that Thomas Aquinas’s Identity Formula—the statement that the “intellect in act is the intelligible in act”—does not, as is usually supposed, express his position on how the intellect accesses extramental realities (responding to the so-called “mind-world gap”). Instead, it should be understood as a claim about the metaphysics of intellection, according to which the perfection requisite for performing the act of understanding is what could be called “intellectual-intelligible being.” In reinterpreting Aquinas’s Identity Formula, I explore the notion of (...) being “in act” as an intellect or intelligible (intelligibile actu, intellectus actu), his curious comments about an “order” or “genus” of intelligibles, and the relationship of understanding and being-understood. If we remove (...) our presuppositions and eisegesis, ossified through centuries of familiarity, and read the stories at face value, what can we discern about character, virtue, and moral development via the human protagonists as well as God? In this book aimed at undergraduates and faith-seeking adults, Lewis provides an accessible introduction to both scripture and ethics, as well as a creative endeavor at the interface.Using an eclectic hermeneutical approach, Lewis offers a fresh reading of the Hebrew Scriptures. Fundamental to his thesis are two points. First, even though the Hebrew Scriptures are made up of a variety of texts in different genres written by different authors over almost a millennium, at some point, they were collated into the canonical, three-part sequence (Law, Prophets, and Writings—the Tanakh, TNK) by redactors who shaped the collection with a particular directionality. Pivotal to this process was the Babylonian Exile, which Lewis considers a crucial lens for reading a narrative arc across the collection. Second, he reminds Christian readers that the structure and sequence of texts in the Christian "Old Testament" differs from that of the Jewish TNK. As a result, "TNK and Old Testament, by the way they order the documents that make them up, thus tell different stories" (9).Lewis walks the reader through a series of ordered reflections on the three main sections of the Hebrew Scriptures. From Genesis to Chronicles, he charts a shift toward increasing moral complexity, finding in this narrative "a story of moral development" that begins with the need for and establishment of rules or laws (Torah—chap. 2), moves to the discernment of principles at the heart of the laws (Prophets—chap. 3), and culminates with a vision of wisdom captured in the multifaceted and sometimes conflicting texts in the Writings (chap. 4), complete with a controversial yet intriguing interpretation of Job. Wisdom, in his reading of these texts, is the practical skill needed to interpret the laws, rules, and principles of the tradition with the nuance necessary for the ever-changing sociocultural context of the "hard, cruel world" in which the Jews of ancient Palestine found themselves. [End Page 204]The book culminates with chapter 5, titled "Wisdom Calls," where he brings the multilayered Wisdom tradition (chochmah, in Hebrew) into conversation with the Aristotelian tradition of virtue and practical wisdom (phronesis), finding the analog for Aristotle's endpoint of eudaimonia in the Hebraic vision of shalom. Shalom is "the goal toward which wisdom strives and the good that it seeks to achieve" (p. 73). In a short appendix, he also brings chochmah into conversation with contemporary developments in the moral psychology of wisdom, drawing on the work of Darcia Narvaez and scholars at the Max Planck Institute, among others.Lewis's reading brings the Hebrew Scriptures alive, reminding us how wonderfully messy, interesting, and complicated its characters and stories are. By way of critique, one might ask: Can one read a scriptural text too naively? At points, this reader wished for a bit more historical-critical interpretation as a way of enhancing the conclusions being drawn. Integration of the material on the moral psychology of wisdom into the final chapter, rather than as an appendix, would also have been welcome. Self-knowledge is commonly thought to have become a topic of serious philosophical inquiry during the early modern period. Already in the thirteenth century, however, the medieval thinker Thomas Aquinas developed a sophisticated theory of self-knowledge, which Therese Scarpelli Cory presents as a project of reconciling the conflicting phenomena of self-opacity and privileged self-access. Situating Aquinas's theory within the mid-thirteenth-century debate and his own maturing thought on human nature, Cory investigates the kinds of self-knowledge that Aquinas describes and the questions (...) they raise. She shows that to a degree remarkable in a medieval thinker, self-knowledge turns out to be central to Aquinas's account of cognition and personhood, and that his theory provides tools for considering intentionality, reflexivity and selfhood. This paper explores the important role of critical science, and in particular of post-colonial and decolonial theories, in understanding and shaping the ongoing advances in artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is viewed as amongst the technological advances that will reshape modern societies and their relations. While the design and deployment of systems that continually adapt holds the promise of far-reaching positive change, they simultaneously pose significant risks, especially to already vulnerable peoples. Values and power are central to this discussion. Decolonial theories (...) use historical hindsight to explain patterns of power that shape our intellectual, political, economic, and social world. By embedding a decolonial critical approach within its technical practice, AI communities can develop foresight and tactics that can better align research and technology development with established ethical principles, centring vulnerable peoples who continue to bear the brunt of negative impacts of innovation and scientific progress. We highlight problematic applications that are instances of coloniality, and using a decolonial lens, submit three tactics that can form a decolonial field of artificial intelligence: creating a critical technical practice of AI, seeking reverse tutelage and reverse pedagogies, and the renewal of affective and political communities. The years ahead will usher in a wave of new scientific breakthroughs and technologies driven by AI research, making it incumbent upon AI communities to strengthen the social contract through ethical foresight and the multiplicity of intellectual perspectives available to us, ultimately supporting future technologies that enable greater well-being, with the goal of beneficence and justice for all. This book examines the influence of Saint Thomas Aquinas upon Nicholas of Cusa’s doctrine of human nature. It explores this influence against the background of other authors associated with Cusanus’ own generation of philosophers in order to demonstrate the uniqueness of Cusanus’ use of Aquinas.

The first IVF baby was born in the 1970s. Less than 20 years later, we had cloning and GM food, and information and communication technologies had transformed everyday life. In 2000, the human genome was sequenced. More recently, there has been much discussion of the economic and social benefits of nanotechnology, and synthetic biology has also been generating controversy. This important volume is a timely contribution to increasing calls for regulation - or better regulation - of these and other new (...) technologies. Drawing on an international team of legal scholars, it reviews and develops the role of human rights in the regulation of new technologies. Three controversies at the intersection between human rights and new technology are given particular attention. First, how the expansive application of human rights could contribute to the creation of a brave new world of choice, where human dignity is fundamentally compromised; second, how new technologies, and our regulatory responses to them, could be a threat to human rights; and, third, how human rights could be used to create better regulation of these technologies.
