Ethical Responsibility for the Social Production of Tuberculosis.Seiji Yamada, Sheldon Riklon & Gregory G. Maskarinec - 2016 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 13 (1):57-64.
Approximately one in two hundred persons in the Marshall Islands have active tuberculosis. We examine the historical antecedents of this situation in order to assign ethical responsibility for the present situation. Examining the antecedents in terms of Galtung’s dialectic of personal versus structural violence, we can identify instances in the history of the Marshall Islands when individual subjects made decisions with large-scale ecologic, social, and health consequences. The roles of medical experimenters, military commanders, captains of the weapons industry in particular, (...)

Rethinking Montage: Berlin Alexanderplatz’s Paper TrailsMontage neu denken: Papierspuren in Berlin Alexanderplatz.Malika Maskarinec - 2021 - Deutsche Vierteljahrsschrift für Literaturwissenschaft Und Geistesgeschichte 95 (1):115-135.
This article takes up the concept of montage that has defined scholarship on Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf since its publication. Against interpretations that understand the novel’s technique of montage as related to film and the avant-garde, I show that the novel is more strongly tied to paper objects and practices, above all the nineteenth-century serial novel and its medial environment in the newspaper. Approaching the novel from this perspective directs attention – in opposition to the (...)

Formbildung und Formbegriff: das Formdenken der Moderne.Markus Klammer, Malika Maskarinec, Rahel Villinger & Ralph Ubl (eds.) - 2019 - Paderborn: Fink.

Neurointerventions in Criminal Justice: On the Scope of the Moral Right to Bodily Integrity.G. Meynen, S. Ligthart, L. Forsberg, T. Douglas & V. Tesink - 2023 - Neuroethics 16 (3):1-11.
There is growing interest in the use of neurointerventions to reduce the risk that criminal offenders will reoffend. Commentators have raised several ethical concerns regarding this practice. One prominent concern is that, when imposed without the offender’s valid consent, neurointerventions might infringe offenders’ right to bodily integrity. While it is commonly held that we possess a moral right to bodily integrity, the extent to which this right would protect against such neurointerventions is as-yet unclear. In this paper, we will assess (...)

  9. Extinction.G. M. Aitken - 1998 - Biology and Philosophy 13 (3):393-411.
A significant proportion of conservationists' work is directed towards efforts to save disappearing species. This relies upon the belief that species extinction is undesirable. When justifications are offered for this belief, they very often rest upon the assumption that extinction brought about by humans is different in kind from other forms of extinction. This paper examines this assumption and reveals that there is indeed good reason to suppose current anthropogenic extinctions to be different in kind from extinctions brought about at (...)

Toward an Assessment of the Historical-Philosophical Views of Vladimir Solovyov.G. K. Bushurov - 1967 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 6 (3):42-51.
In the history of Russian philosophy, V. S. Solovyov is known as one of the prominent spokesmen of theological idealism. Lenin more than once pointed to the need to combat the ideas of this philosopher . He quite properly regarded them as the theoretical foundation of the ideology of "liberal renegacy.".
