Das anthropologische Konzept der Verletzlichkeit wird seit einigen Jahren als Alternative zu einem autonomie-zentrierten Zugang zur Medizinethik diskutiert. Was aber genau unter Verletzlichkeit bzw. Vulnerabilität zu verstehen ist, und worin die moralische Relevanz derselben besteht, bleibt eine kontrovers diskutierte Frage. In einem dreijährigen Diskursprojekt haben die Autor/-innen dieses Bandes sich in unterschiedlichen Perspektiven mit dem Konzept der Verletzlichkeit des Menschen befasst. Ausgehend von einem konstruktivistischen Kulturbegriff stellt sich die Frage, wie in konkreten ethischen Konflikten im Gesundheitswesen kulturelle Differenzen konstruiert und moralisch relevant werden. Ein Konzept, das diese intersubjektive Konstruktion von Differenz und die damit verbundenen moralisch relevanten Machtasymmetrien zu analysieren erlaubt, ist das Konzept des „Othering“. Einzelne Aspekte des Othering im Gesundheitswesen und die Frage seiner Reichweite werden diskutiert, insbesondere die Frage, wie sich moralisch problematische Formen des Othering zur anthropologischen Unvermeidbarkeit von Asymmetrien im Verhältnis des Selbst zum fremden Anderen (...) verhalten. Die Autoren benennen Strategien zur Vermeidung der moralisch fragwürdigen Aspekte von Othering. Diese Strategien beruhen auf der Fähigkeit zur kritischen Selbstreflexion der Wahrnehmung des Anderen und der Bewertung moralischer Positionen als basale ethische Kompetenzen. (shrink)

A Foucauldian assessment of the common presumption that genetic information is potent and thus oppressive demonstrates that the concern may be misplaced. Foucault's concept of “technologies of self” reveals that genetic power originates not only from the potency of genetic information but from the penchant of individuals to victimize themselves in the name of optimal health, enhanced intelligence, perfect babies, or would-be immortality. Rather than seeking liberation from the power of the new genetics, Foucault's reinterpretation of the ancient understanding of (...) concern for the self offers the possibility to avoid control by the scientific discourse. His ethical response calls for resistance rather than opposition and places responsibility for resistance in the hands of the subject. Characteristically, he avoids a generalizable form of morality but clarifies that resistance includes acknowledging the human appetite for perfection and subordinating science to ethical and aesthetic matters. They deal with internal evidence and literary correspondences only. Examination of the metre has not produced any very definite results, so when I note d in one of the most recent articles on Vergilian metre z the statement that ‘a comparison and analysis of the separate books of the Aeneid does (...) not give any results worthy of note ’ , it seemed that these note s might appear without further waiting, though their argument is almost entirely subjective. Zusammenfassung Der Anspruch des moralischen Liberalismus, Machtbeziehungen aus der ethischen Begründung moralischer Normen auszuschließen, übersieht die Abhängigkeit eines imaginierten idealen Diskurses von faktischen Diskursen, die immer von Machtstrukturen und Exklusionen geprägt sind. In theologischer Perspektive wird ausgehend von Augustin ein Konzept theologischer Ethik entwickelt, das einerseits die Orientierung an einem eschatischen und universalistischen Ideal gelingender Sozialität aus Liebe festhält, und das andererseits angesichts der Nichtidealität menschlichen Zusammenlebens Sozialethik als kritische Reflexion des verantwortlichen Umgangs mit politischer Macht versteht.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Krise des Protestantismus in der Moderne ist eine Krise des Schriftprinzips. Der Verlust des Schriftprinzips lässt sich deuten als der Verlust der Kategorie der Textualität der Schrift im Prozess der modernen Transformationen des Schriftprinzips. Dieser Aufsatz versucht diese Kategorie wiederzugewinnen, zunächst im Rückgriff auf einen pragmatischen Verstehensbegriff, der an der Philosophie des späten Wittgenstein gewonnen wird: Wir lernen Sprache immer in pragmatischen Kontexten zu verstehen. Darum ist Verstehen zunächst vor allem eine Sache des Verhaltens und Reagierens auf Sprache. Mit (...) Hilfe dieses Verstehensbegriffes wird dann die altlutherische Lehre von der Schrift am Beispiel des theologischen Systems von Johann Andreas Quenstedt reinterpretiert. Die Lehre von der Verbalinspiration kommt so im Kontext eines Begriffes praktisch-präpropositionalen Verstehens der Heiligen Schrift in den Blick, der insbesondere die Passivität des Lesers und das Handeln des Heiligen Geistes durch das Medium des Textes betont. Der Text gewinnt gerade in seiner Materialität Autonomie sowohl gegenüber den Lesern als auch gegenüber seinen Autoren. Dabei wird die Textwerdung des Wortes vom Ziel des Evangeliums, dem Heil der ganzen Menschheit, her begründet. Die Kirche legt, in dem sie die Materialität des biblischen Textes in der Inspirationslehre pneumatologisch interpretiert, Zeugnis von ihrem ihr externen Grund ab: dem Wort Gottes, das sie in diesen Texten hört.SUMMARYThe essay begins with the observation of the following dialectics: The Reformation's claim that Holy Scripture is the basis of theological argument has become the heart of a crisis in recent protestant theology and faith. The essay deals with this crisis in referring to the textuality of the Holy Scripture. This textuality is understood as a category which was lost in the modern shifts of scriptural interpretation. This textuality is here regained in reference to a pragmatic concept of understanding as found in the late Philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein: We learn to understand languages in pragmatic contexts. Therefore, understanding is first of all a way of behaving and reacting to language. The Lutheran theology of Scripture as found in the Theology of Johann Andreas Quenstedt , a main exponent of late 17th century Lutheran Theology, is reinterpreted in light of this concept of textuality. The dogma of verbal inspiration with Quenstedt is understood in the context of a pneumatological concept of pragmatic-prepropositional understanding of Scripture that emphasises the passivity of the reader and the acting of the Holy Spirit by means of the biblical Text . The text of the Holy Scripture gains autonomy from its authors and its readers by reference to its materiality, which is necessary due to the universal salvific aim of the Gospel. Hence, the pneumatological interpretation of the materiality of the biblical text in the dogma of verbal inspiration is an interpretation by which the Church testifies that its external ground, the Word of God, is heard in these texts. Our playgrounds were the rubble fields in the streets and the extended woods between Frankfurt, where I grew up, and Darmstadt, where Miriam grew up, some twenty-five miles apart.

The debate on the foundations of knowledge and meaning has gained particular attention in recent philosophical discourse. A number of commentators, including Richard Rorty, have categorized leading contemporary philosophers such as Wittgenstein as being 'anti-foundationalist". In this comprehensive analysis of Wittgenstein's concept of the form of life and its implications, Professor Conway takes issue with this characterization of Wittgenstein. Instead, the author interprets Wittgenstein as continuing the discussion of foundations, while radically transforming the very understanding of foundations.

Cognitive values like simplicity, broad scope, and easy handling are properties of a scientific representation that result from the idealization which is involved in the construction of a representation. These properties may facilitate the application of epistemic values to credibility assessments, which provides a rationale for assigning an auxiliary function to cognitive values. In this paper, I defend a further rationale for cognitive values which consists in the assessment of the usefulness of a representation. Usefulness includes the relevance of a (...) representation regarding the investigation of a given problem and its practicability for the users. This rationale builds on the claim that any evaluation of scientific representations should pursue two aims: providing information about their credibility and providing information about their usefulness. Cognitive values relating to the usefulness of a representation and epistemic values relating to its credibility both perform a first-order function. Cognitive values are abstract, and several values with first-order functions may conflict in their application. Thus, in order for cognitive values to account for the sort of problem that is to be investigated by means of a representation, they need to be appropriately specified and weighed. Comprehensiveness, complexity, high resolution, and easy handling, for instance, may be required in a first-order function for model-based prediction of regional climate impacts but not for explaining how the global climate system works. Specifying and weighing cognitive and epistemic values relative to a given problem is a legitimate second-order function of social values. (shrink)
