El transhumanismo como filosofía e ideología tecnologicista tiene cada vez más adeptos y se coloca en los ámbitos académicos como una posición positiva, posible y deseable. Su implementación aparece solapada en una vida cotidiana que depende, como nunca antes, de los avances tecnológicos. La posición que manejaremos es que esta ideología, que sobredimensiona el papel de la tecnología en la sociedad, tiene una visión limitada respecto con los conflictos éticos, económicos y sociales que dimanan de sus presupuestos. El problema no (...) es negar la tecnología sino qué rol juega en la construcción de la sociedad. El transhumanismo puede estar vendiendo un falso sueño de libertad, donde la uniformidad, la ausencia de crítica, la discriminación y la separación radical entre pobres y ricos definan ese mundo paradisíaco que propone. It is the aim of this paper to establish the concept of politicized medicine. The starting point is the work by Steger and Schochow on the Closed Venerological Wards in the GDR. Steger and Schochow operate with the concept of politicized medicine, although they do not elaborate it due to their primarily empirical approach. In this paper, the theoretical foundations for this concept shall be laid. Therefore, the results of the research by Steger and Schochow as well as the different (...) approaches to politicized medicine have to be examined. In a further step, the house rules of the Closed Venerological ward in Halle is analyzed as an example of politicized medicine. Finally, politicized medicine is differentiated from Foucault’s approach of Bio-Power/Bio-Politics on order to demonstrate its status as an autonomous and fruitful concept. (shrink)

According to Leibniz’s infinite-analysis account of contingency, any derivative truth is contingent if and only if it does not admit of a finite proof. Following a tradition that goes back at least as far as Bertrand Russell, several interpreters have been tempted to explain this biconditional in terms of two other principles: first, that a derivative truth is contingent if and only if it contains infinitely complex concepts and, second, that a derivative truth contains infinitely complex concepts if and only (...) if it does not admit of a finite proof. A consequence of this interpretation is that Leibniz’s infinite-analysis account of contingency falls prey to Robert Adams’s Problem of Lucky Proof. I will argue that this interpretation is mistaken and that, once it is properly understood how the idea of an infinite proof fits into Leibniz’s circle of modal notions, the problem of lucky proof simply disappears. Interventions in the human germline have been regarded as a red line in genetic engineering up to now. However, with the recent progress in genome editing techniques, first and foremost CRISPR-based methods, the tide seems to be turning. The therapeutic benefits in particular are brought forward as an argument in favor of germline genome editing. According to this view, the main benefit of GGE is disease prevention. The procedure could be used to prevent monogenetic conditions for which no treatment is (...) available so far. This leads many commentators to the view that the benefits of GGE outweigh the risks. In this article, I examine the status and ethical implications of GGE as a means of disease prevention. I intend to show that the notion of GGE as disease prevention is only true for one specific application. Instead of being preventive treatments, most applications of GGE are advanced techniques of assisted reproduction. As such, they can be thought of as wish-fulfilling medicine, that is the use of medical techniques for non-medically indicated purposes. Thus, it is necessary to reconsider the risk-benefit analysis of GGE for most of its applications. (shrink)
