  3. "Understanding and Transparency".Stephen R. Grimm - 2017 - In Stephen Grimm Christoph Baumberger & Sabine Ammon (eds.), Explaining Understanding: New Perspectives from Epistemology and Philosophy of Science. Routledge.
I explore the extent to which the epistemic state of understanding is transparent to the one who understands. Against several contemporary epistemologists, I argue that it is not transparent in the way that many have claimed, drawing on results from developmental psychology, animal cognition, and other fields.

    What is Social in a Social-Constructionist View on Emotion?Hannelore Weber - 2012 - Emotion Review 4 (3):234-235.
This commentary posits that the social-constructionist view of emotion should be clearly distinguished from related theoretical views on how emotions are shaped by and shape social interactions and relationships. Differentiating between distinct theoretical perspectives is essential in order to specify the unique knowledge about emotions gained by the social-constructionist approach and to create empirical paradigms that can be applied to test assumptions derived from the social-constructionist view.

Cognitive Frames of Poverty and Tension Handling in Base-of-the-Pyramid Business Models.Jordis Grimm - 2022 - Business and Society 61 (8):2070-2114.
Base-of-the-pyramid business models aim to achieve profitability and poverty reduction by including poor people into corporate value chains. This goal duality creates tensions. Actors’ responses to these tensions are influenced by their cognitive frames of the phenomena building the tension. Applying a cognitive perspective, I investigate how corporate actors with different frames of poverty respond proactively or defensively to the poverty–profitability tension by adapting business model elements. I find that proactive and defensive responses differ for actors holding different cognitive frames (...)

  24. Explaining Understanding: New Perspectives From Epistemology and Philosophy of Science.Stephen Robert Grimm, Christoph Baumberger & Sabine Ammon (eds.) - 2016 - London: Routledge.
What does it mean to understand something? What types of understanding can be distinguished? Is understanding always provided by explanations? And how is it related to knowledge? Such questions have attracted considerable interest in epistemology recently. These discussions, however, have not yet engaged insights about explanations and theories developed in philosophy of science. Conversely, philosophers of science have debated the nature of explanations and theories, while dismissing understanding as a psychological by-product. In this book, epistemologists and philosophers of science together (...)

Riverside Park: The Splendid Sliver.Edward Grimm & E. Peter Schroeder - 2007 - Columbia University Press.
Riverside Park is an illustrated tribute to Frederick Law Olmsted's "other" New York City sanctuary. Since its conception in the 1870s, the park has undergone a number of transformations and suffered from periods of misuse and neglect, but in 1984, much-needed renovations turned this city oasis into what is today one of Manhattan's most beautiful attractions. "If the West Side does not stir you, you are a clod, past redemption."-Robert Moses Millions visit the Upper West Side landmark annually, and despite (...)

  26. Cardinal Newman, Reformed Epistemologist?Stephen R. Grimm - 2001 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 75 (4):497-522.
Despite the recent claims of some prominent Catholic philosophers, I argue that Cardinal Newman's writings are in fact largely compatible with the contemporary movement in the philosophy of religion known as Reformed Epistemology, and in particular with the work of Alvin Plantinga. I first show how the thought of both Newman and Plantinga was molded in response to the "evidentialist" claims of John Locke. I then examine the details of Newman's response, especially as seen in his Essay in Aid of (...)

La conquista del costituzionalismo e le sue prospettive in un mondo trasformato.Dieter Grimm - 2018 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 30 (59).
This essay describes the ambitious claim of modern constitutionalism and distinguishes it from mere juridification of public power. It shows the challenges of constitutionalism that follow from the loss of identity between state power and public power. The essay asserts that the necessity to regulate public power persists, regardless of whether it is exercised by state authorities or international organizations. However, it raises doubts that the fragmented public power on the international level can be regulated in a way that would (...)

Praxis in der Ethikpractice in Ethics: On Methodological Reflection in Applied Moral Philosophy: Zur Methodenreflexion in der Anwendungsorientierten Moralphilosophie.Herwig Grimm & Michael Zichy (eds.)

  33. The Value of Understanding.Stephen Grimm - 2012 - Philosophy Compass 7 (2):103-117.
Over the last several years a number of leading philosophers – including Catherine Elgin, Linda Zagzebski, Jonathan Kvanvig, and Duncan Pritchard – have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the contemporary focus on knowledge in epistemology and have attempted to “recover” the notion of understanding. According to some of these philosophers, in fact, understanding deserves not just to be recovered, but to supplant knowledge as the focus of epistemological inquiry. This entry considers some of the main reasons why philosophers have taken understanding (...)

    The Epistemic Goals of the Humanities.Stephen R. Grimm - 2024 - Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume 98 (1):209-232.
The sciences aim to get at the truth about the nature of the world. Do the humanities have a similar goal—namely, to get at the truth about things like novels, paintings, and historical events? I consider a few different ways in which the humanities aim at the truth about their objects, in the process giving rise to epistemic goods such as knowledge and understanding. Two works in the humanities are used as test cases: the historian Tyler Stovall’sParis Noir (1996) and (...)
