Les travaux de Hans Jonas demeurent largement méconnus de la francophonie. Le peu d’entrain dont témoigne la communauté philosophique à traduire les textes de Jonas s’explique en grande partie par le caractère éclaté de son œuvre dans laquelle on chercherait en vain un ouvrage fondateur ou un livre qui rassemblerait ses principales positions philosophiques. Héritière de la phénoménologie, l’œuvre jonasienne est multiforme et en constant devenir. Elle ne s’arrête sur aucune vérité définitive en abordant de façon toujours maîtrisée des (...) champs du savoir aussi variés que ceux de la mythologie, de la biologie et de l’éthique. Dans son ouvrage issu d’une thèse de doctorat, Nathalie Frogneux relève avec brio le défi qui consiste à découvrir le sens général d’une pensée complexe dont l’itinéraire semble dominé par la discontinuité. Frogneux parvient pourtant à mettre au jour l’unité de la pensée jonasienne qu’elle situe dans le régime d’une double critique: une critique du «dualisme occidental» où l’homme et le monde naturel deviennent étrangers l’un à l’autre, et une critique du monisme philosophique qui en vient à ne plus reconnaître aucune liberté au vivant. Comme le souligne Jean Greisch dans la préface, il s’agit de la première interprétation systématique de la pensée de Jonas dont la production philosophique s’étend sur près de soixanteannées. La longévité et la productivité de Jonas ont d’ailleurs donné lieu à cette anecdote rapportée par Frogneux où un étudiant demandait à Paul Ricœur s’il y avait un lien de parenté entre le Jonas des années 1930 intéressé par le gnosticisme de l’Antiquité tardive et celui de la notion de responsabilité des années 1980. Hans Jonas est né en Allemagne et il fut l’élève de Bultmann, Husserl et Heidegger. Sa vie est placée sous le signe du voyage. Il émigre d’abord, en 1933, en Palestine, puis au Canada où il enseigne, au début des années 1950, aux Universités de Montréal et d’Ottawa avant de s’installer aux États-Unis où il occupe la chaire de philosophie à la New School for Social Research de New York. C’est durant ces années new-yorkaises qu’il rédige ses deux principaux (...) ouvrages: Das Prinzip Verantwortung. Versuch einer Ethik für die technologische Zivilisation et The Phenomenon of Life dont la première publication remonte à 1966. On assiste aujourd’hui à la redécouverte de ce livre qui non seulement fait l’objet d’une nouvelle édition aux presses de la Northwestern University, mais vient aussi d’être publié dans une première traduction française chez De Boeck Université. How ought we to deal with our embodied existence–-and particularly the emotion of grief–-in the light of the gospel? Gregory of Nyssa recognizes the embodied character of our emotional lives, but he refuses to exempt the passion of grief from moral evaluation. While the Cappadocian father is attuned to the powerful role that the emotion of grief plays in our lives, he is also keenly aware of the fallen character of the body and of the problematic character of the passions. Hans-Georg Gadamer is considered to have made the most important contribution to hermeneutics of this century through his major work, Truth and Method. Born in Marburg on February 11, 1900, he earned his doctorate under Paul Natorp, the Plato scholar, in 1922 and completed his habilitation thesis on Plato's dialectical ethics under Martin Heidegger in 1928. He spent the major portion of his teaching career at the University of Heidelberg, becoming emeritus professor in 1968. In recent years the mushrooming power, functionality and ubiquity of computers and the Internet have outstripped early forecasts about technology's rate of advancement and usefulness in everyday life. Alert pundits now foresee a world saturated with powerful computer chips, which will increasingly insinuate themselves into our gadgets, dwellings, apparel and even our bodies.

Grasping Reality addresses the methodology of a sophisticated realistic approach to scientific as well as everyday recognition by using schemes and interpretive constructs to analyze theories and the practice of recognition from a hypothesis-realistic vantage point. An appendix provides an overview regarding a realistic and pragmatic philosophy of technology, including the so-called new information technologies.

"All men by nature desire to know"-this is the famous first sentence of Aristotle's Metaphysics. It is interesting to note how knowledge, at least since Aristotle, could be understood as a desire, as a mental craving, so to speak. When understood as a desire, knowledge necessarily goes along with a certain absence, a lack. Those who crave for knowledge are not yet fully in its possession, they are still on the search.

Because of their elementary significance in almost all fields of science, measures of association between two variables or traits are abundant and multiform. One aspect of association that is of considerable interest, especially in population genetics and ecology, seems to be widely ignored. This aspect concerns association between complex traits that show variable and arbitrarily defined state differences. Among such traits are genetic characters controlled by many and potentially polyploid loci, species characteristics, and environmental variables, all of which may be (...) mutually and asymmetrically associated. A concept of directed association of one trait with another is developed here that relies solely on difference measures between the states of a trait. Associations are considered at three levels: between individual states of two variables, between an individual state of one variable and the totality of the other variable, and between two variables. Relations to known concepts of association are identified. In particular, measures at the latter two levels turn out to be interpretable as measures of differentiation. Examples are given for areas of application (search for functional relationships, distribution of variation over populations, genomic associations, spatiogenetic structure). (shrink)

What I intend to show is that the Leibnizian language studies—the formal ones as well as those on natural languages—from his early plans for academies and language societies on up to his studies of etymology and to his interest in foreign languages and in logical, geometrical, arithmetical, and other formal calculi, has to be seen as an important contribution to the idea of enlightenment. Their importance was such that Christian Wolff was able to transform the Leibnizian ideas into the mighty (...) movement of Leibniz-Wolffian metaphysics, a movement paralleled to the tradition of Thomasius. Did Løgstrup become organic in Germany in the 1930s? Questions like these are ones that Hans Hauge wants to answer in his new book about the theologian and thinker K.E. Løgstrup. Pit is a multi-player card game that simulates the commodities trading market, and where actions consist of bidding and of swapping cards. We present a formal description of the knowledge and change of knowledge in that game. The description is in a standard language for dynamic epistemics expanded with assignment. Assignment is necessary to describe that cards change hands. The formal description is a prerequisite to model Pit in game theory. The main contribution of this paper should be seen as (...) the rigorous formalization of all knowledge in Pit. (shrink)
