The enigmatic Placozoa part 1: Exploring evolutionary controversies and poor ecological knowledge.Bernd Schierwater, Hans-Jürgen Osigus, Tjard Bergmann, Neil W. Blackstone, Heike Hadrys, Jens Hauslage, Patrick O. Humbert, Kai Kamm, Marc Kvansakul, Kathrin Wysocki & Rob DeSalle - 2021 - Bioessays 43 (10):2100080.
The placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens is a tiny hairy plate and more simply organized than any other living metazoan. After its original description by F.E. Schulze in 1883, it attracted attention as a potential model for the ancestral state of metazoan organization, the “Urmetazoon”. Trichoplax lacks any kind of symmetry, organs, nerve cells, muscle cells, basal lamina, and extracellular matrix. Furthermore, the placozoan genome is the smallest (not secondarily reduced) genome of all metazoan genomes. It harbors a remarkably rich diversity of (...)

The enigmatic Placozoa part 2: Exploring evolutionary controversies and promising questions on earth and in space.Bernd Schierwater, Hans-Jürgen Osigus, Tjard Bergmann, Neil W. Blackstone, Heike Hadrys, Jens Hauslage, Patrick O. Humbert, Kai Kamm, Marc Kvansakul, Kathrin Wysocki & Rob DeSalle - 2021 - Bioessays 43 (10):2100083.
The placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens has been bridging gaps between research disciplines like no other animal. As outlined in part 1, placozoans have been subject of hot evolutionary debates and placozoans have challenged some fundamental evolutionary concepts. Here in part 2 we discuss the exceptional genetics of the phylum Placozoa and point out some challenging model system applications for the best known species, Trichoplax adhaerens.

Neuroenhancement involves the use of neurotechnologies to improve cognitive, affective or behavioural functioning, where these are not judged to be clinically impaired. Questions about enhancement have become one of the key topics of neuroethics over the past decade. The current study draws on in-depth public engagement activities in ten European countries giving a bottom-up perspective on the ethics and desirability of enhancement. This informed the design of an online contrastive vignette experiment that was administered to representative samples of 1000 respondents (...)

How much dentists are ethically concerned about overtreatment; a vignette-based survey in Switzerland.Ali Kazemian, Isabelle Berg, Christina Finkel, Shahram Yazdani, Hans-Florian Zeilhofer, Philipp Juergens & Stella Reiter-Theil - 2015 - BMC Medical Ethics 16 (1):43.
Overtreatment is when medical or dental services are provided with a higher volume or cost than is appropriate. This study aimed to investigate how a group of dentists in Switzerland, a wealthy country known to have high standards of healthcare including dentistry, evaluated the meaning of unnecessary treatments from an ethical perspective and, assessed the expected frequency of different possible behaviors among their peers.

Diller über "Emotion" vs. "Passion" bei Descartes – und über zwei grundsätzlich verschiedene Begriffe von "Begriff".Daniel Dohrn - 2012 - Archiv für Begriffsgeschichte 54:85-90.
Drawing on a rich digitalized corpus of early modern texts, Hans-Juergen Diller argues that the concepts expressed by the English words >passion emotion emotion passion emotion<. But there are two concepts of a concept. According to the first, the meaning of a word expressing a concept is not sharply distinguished from the complete discourse in which it figures. According to the second, meaning is more narrow. For instance, it is restricted to the explicit definition an author provides. I show (...)

Strawson and Kant.Hans-Johann Glock (ed.) - 2003 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Kant is generally regarded as the greatest modern philosopher. But that analytic philosophers treat him as a central voice in contemporary debates is largely due to Sir Peter Strawson, the most eminent philosopher living in Britain today. In this collection, leading Kant scholars and analytic philosophers, including Strawson himself, for the first time assess his relation to Kant. The essays raise questions about how philosophy should deal with its past, what kind of insights it can achieve, and whether we can (...)

The readability of the world.Hans Blumenberg - 2022 - Ithaca: Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library. Edited by Robert Savage & David Roberts.
Hans Blumenberg has, in the quarter-century since his death, become recognized as one of the most important philosophers of the postwar period. The Readability of the World represents Blumenberg's first full-length demonstration of the metaphorological method he had pioneered twenty years earlier in Paradigms for a Metaphorology. Whereas Blumenberg had confined himself in Paradigms to sketching this future research field, in Readability he applies his method to a single case study: the idea that the world presents itself to human (...)

Species Transformation Through Reconstruction: Reconstruction Through Active Reaction of Organisms: Translated by Alexander Böhm and Jan Baedke.Hans Böker - 2021 - Biological Theory 16 (2):114-122.
Comparative biological morphology, incorporating the study of active reaction, is contrasted with genetics as the study of passive mutation. Geneticists investigate anatomical characters, never anatomical constructions, which are capable of reorganization when the biological-morphological equilibrium of the organism has been disturbed. The anatomy of Opisthocomus cristatus and Stringops habroptilus demonstrate that three successive disturbances in the bio-morphological equilibrium are reacted to purposively by anatomical reconstruction. These reactions are no accidental mutations, but are anatomical reactions, related to, and affecting, the organism (...)

Making ethics teaching more effective with a three step model.Hans Teke - 2020 - International Journal of Ethics Education 6 (1):149-162.
In this study, the impacts of two different “methods” for teaching ethics as part of the religious education in the Swedish upper secondary school were compared by means of a non-randomized controlled trial in two parts, involving 542 students. The question was which “method” had the greatest capacity to generate long-term ethical awareness in the students. The intervention condition consisted of students whose teachers were instructed to teach according to the Three Step Model, a teaching method influenced by research concerning (...)

    Monotonicity properties of comparative determiners.Hans Smessaert - 1996 - Linguistics and Philosophy 19 (3):295 - 336.
This paper presents a generalization of the standard notions of left monotonicity (on the nominal argument of a determiner) and right monotonicity (on the VP argument of a determiner). Determiners such as “more than/at least as many as” or “fewer than/at most as many as”, which occur in so-called propositional comparison, are shown to be monotone with respect to two nominal arguments and two VP-arguments. In addition, it is argued that the standard Generalized Quantifier analysis of numerical determiners such as (...)

The history of what we call molecular biology today is not just the story of DNA. Molecular biology emerged from and was supported by a multiplicity of widely scattered, differently embedded, and loosely, if at all connected experimental systems for characterizing living beings to the level of biologically relevant macromolecules. By implementing different modes of technical analysis, these systems created a new space of representation in which the central concepts of molecular biology gradually became articulated. The paper describes the establishment (...)

Homo Creator: Technik als philosophische Herausforderung.Hans Poser - 2016 - Wiesbaden: Springer VS.

Representative Claims in Healthcare: Identifying the Variety in Patient Representation.Hans Vollaard & Hester Bovenkamp - 2018 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 15 (3):359-368.
In many countries patient involvement is high on the healthcare policy agenda, which includes patient representation in collective decision-making. Patient organizations are generally considered to be important representatives of patients. Other actors also claim to represent patients in decision-making, such as politicians, healthcare professionals, and client advisory councils. In this paper we take a broad view of patient representation, examining all the actors claiming to represent patients in the Dutch debate on the decentralization of care. We conclude that variety in (...)

Preservation and Postulation: Lessons from the New Debate on the Ramsey Test.Hans Rott - 2017 - Mind 126 (502):609–626.
Richard Bradley has initiated a new debate, with Brian Hill and Jake Chandler as further participants, about the implications of a number of so-called triviality results surrounding the Ramsey test for conditionals. I comment on this debate and argue that ‘Inclusion’ and ‘Preservation’, which were originally introduced as postulates for the rational revision of factual beliefs, have little to recommend them in the first place when extended to languages containing conditionals. I question the philosophical method of postulation that was applied (...)

The paper aims at a perspicuous representation of Isaac Levi's pragmatist epistemology, spanning from the 1967 classic "Gambling with Truth" to his 2004 book on "Mild Contraction". Based on a formal framework for Levi's notion of inquiry, I analyse his decision-theoretic approach with truth and information as basic cognitive values, and with Shackle measures as emerging structures. Both cognitive values figure prominently in Levi's model of inductive belief expansion, but only the value of information is employed in his model of (...)

The scope of this examination embraces all the Tiantai doctrines that describe the dynamics and epistemological nature of ultimate realization, called “subtle awakening”, as well as all the relevant Buddhist sources based on which Tiantai master Zhiyi developed this type of “contemplation”. According to the Tiantai view, epistemological and ontological issues coincide with one another, since contemplation entails our insight that “truth and falsehood (...)
