A vision of ethics in efficient occupational healthcare.Jessica Hemberg, Helena Nyman & Håkan Hemberg - 2019 - Nursing Ethics 26 (1):161-171.
Background: Occupational healthcare is nowadays more and more regulated by economic demands of gain and efficiency. Aim and research questions: The aim of this study is to reach a new understanding of ethics in occupational healthcare by uncovering this from occupational healthcare nurses’ own views. The research questions are as follows: (1) What is the core of an ethical value base in occupational healthcare? (2) What does it mean for occupational healthcare nurses to fulfill their ethical value base in occupational (...)

  5. Moral Principles: A Challenge for Deniers of Moral Luck.Anna Nyman - 2024 - Ergo: An Open Access Journal of Philosophy 11 (7).
On a common characterization, moral luck occurs when factors beyond agents’ control affect their moral responsibility. The existence of moral luck is widely contested, however. In this paper, I present a new challenge for deniers of moral luck. It seems that some factors beyond agents’ control—such as moral principles about blame- and praiseworthiness—clearly affect moral responsibility. Thus, moral luck deniers face a dialectical burden that has so far gone unnoticed. They must either point to a relevant difference between factors like (...)

  8. The parallelism argument and the problem of moral luck.Anna Nyman - 2021 - Philosophical Studies 179 (3):955-971.
Robert Hartman’s parallelism argument aims to show that resultant moral luck exists. The gist of the argument is this: because there is circumstantial moral luck in a particular circumstantial luck scenario and that scenario is analogous in important ways to a particular resultant luck scenario, the resultant luck scenario is plausibly an instance of resultant moral luck. I argue that there is a principled way of denying that circumstantial moral luck is present in the circumstantial luck scenario. Doing so is (...)

Decision-making capacity: from testing to evaluation.Helena Hermann, Martin Feuz, Manuel Trachsel & Nikola Biller-Andorno - 2020 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 23 (2):253-259.
Decision-making capacity (DMC) is the gatekeeping element for a patient’s right to self-determination with regard to medical decisions. A DMC evaluation is not only conducted on descriptive grounds but is an inherently normative task including ethical reasoning. Therefore, it is dependent to a considerable extent on the values held by the clinicians involved in the DMC evaluation. Dealing with the question of how to reasonably support clinicians in arriving at a DMC judgment, a new tool is presented that fundamentally differs (...)

From Harrods to Africa: The Travels of a Lion Called Christian.Jopi Nyman - 2012 - Society and Animals 20 (3):294-310.
This essay is a postcolonial reading of the recently republished auto/biography A Lion Called Christian , written by two Australians, Anthony Bourke and John Rendall. The book narrates the unlikely story of raising a lion in Chelsea and discusses his eventual repatriation and new life in East Africa. The essay argues that the representation of the animal in the metropolitan and African spaces as portrayed in the book can be read critically in the context of the cultural legacy of British (...)

This paper presents a way of classifying different forms of naturalness and unnaturalness. Three main forms of (un)naturalness are found as the following: history- based (un)naturalness, property-based (un)naturalness and relation-based (un)naturalness. Numerous subforms (and some subforms of the subforms) of each are presented. The subforms differ with respect to the entities that are found (un)natural, with respect to their all-inclusiveness, and whether (un)naturalness is seen as all-or-nothing affair, or a continuous gradient. This kind of conceptual analysis is needed, first, because (...)

Just the Servant: An Intersectional Critique of Servant Leadership.Helena Liu - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 156 (4):1099-1112.
Servant leadership offers a compelling ideal of self-sacrificing individuals who put the needs of others before their own and cultivate a culture of growth in their organisations. Although the theory’s attempts to emphasise the moral, emotional and relational dimensions of leadership are laudable, it has primarily assumed a decontextualised view of leadership untouched by power. This article aims to problematise servant leadership by undertaking an intersectional analysis of an Asian cis-male heterosexual senior manager in Australia. Through in-depth interviews with the (...)

Main principles of the complex nonlinear thinking which are based on the notions of the modern theory of evolution and self-organization of complex systems called also synergetics are under discussion in this article. The principles are transdisciplinary, holistic, and oriented to a human being. The notions of system complexity, nonlinearity of evolution, creative chaos, space-time definiteness of structure-attractors of evolution, resonant influences, nonlinear and soft management are here of great importance. In this connection, a prominent contribution made to system analysis (...)

Police epistemic culture and boundary work with judicial authorities and forensic scientists: the case of transnational DNA data exchange in the EU.Helena Machado & Rafaela Granja - 2019 - New Genetics and Society 38 (3):289-307.
The exchange of forensic DNA data is seen as an increasingly important tool in criminal investigations into organised crime, control strategies and counter-terrorism measures. On the basis of a set of interviews with police professionals involved in the transnational exchange of DNA data between EU countries, this paper examines how forensic DNA evidence is given meaning within the various different ways of constructing a police epistemic culture, it is, a set of shared values concerning valid knowledge and practices normatively considered (...)

Fair or Unfair? Perceived Fairness of Household Division of Labour and Gender Equality among Women and Men: The Swedish Case.Charlott Nyman & Mikael Nordenmark - 2003 - European Journal of Women's Studies 10 (2):181-209.
The main aim of this study is to analyse how time use, individual resources, distributive justice and gender ideology influence perceptions of fairness concerning housework and gender equality. The analyses are based on survey data as well as on an interview study, both including Swedish couples. The quantitative results show that it is only factors connected to time use that are significantly correlated to both perceptions of fairness concerning division of household labour and gender equality. Although the qualitative results in (...)

    Algorithmic logic. Multiple-valued extensions.Helena Rasiowa - 1979 - Studia Logica 38 (4):317 - 335.
Extended algorithmic logic (EAL) as introduced in [18] is a modified version of extended +-valued algorithmic logic. Only two-valued predicates and two-valued propositional variables occur in EAL. The role of the +-valued logic is restricted to construct control systems (stacks) of pushdown algorithms whereas their actions are described by means of the two-valued logic. Thus EAL formalizes a programming theory with recursive procedures but without the instruction CASE.The aim of this paper is to discuss EAL and prove the completeness theorem. (...)

Antes do nascimento da Biopolítica: para pensar o surgimento de uma noção em Michel Foucault.Helena Almeia E. Silva Sampaio & Luiz Guilherme Augsburger - 2024 - Aufklärung 11 (2):21-32.
Given the relevance and frequent presence in academic research of the notion of “biopolitics” – developed by the philosopher Michel Foucault –, this article seeks to contribute to the understanding of this notion and its conceptual emergence. To this end, the article analyses the four books published by M. Foucault prior to the initial use of the term “biopolitics” in the second half of the 1970s, aiming so to identify within them the presence of constituent elements of the notion. Elements (...)

  39. Rousseau and Geneva: from the first discourse to the social contract, 1749-1762.Helena Rosenblatt - 1997 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Rousseau and Geneva reconstructs the main aspects of Genevan socio-economic, political and religious thought in the first half of the eighteenth century. In this way Dr Rosenblatt effectively contextualizes the development of Rousseau's thought from the First Discourse through to the Social Contract. Over time Rousseau has been adopted as a French thinker, but this adoption obscures his Genevan origin. Dr Rosenblatt points out that he is, in fact, a Genevan thinker and illustrates for the first time that Rousseau's classical (...)

Why constant? A critical overview of the constant revival.Helena Rosenblatt - 2004 - Modern Intellectual History 1 (3):439-453.
Recent years have seen a remarkable renewal of interest in the thought of Benjamin Constant . For long recognized as the author of the literary masterpiece Adolphe, Constant is now receiving increasing attention for his political writings. Paperback editions of his major works are presently available in both French and English, helping to establish his growing reputation as a founding father of modern liberalism. Constant's stature as a seminal liberal thinker has benefited from the recent climate of opinion in the (...)

The quest for truth: The use of discursive and rhetorical resources in newspaper coverage of the (mis)treatment of young Swedish gymnasts.Helena Blomberg & Jonas Stier - 2016 - Discourse and Communication 10 (1):65-81.
In 2012, the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter published a series of articles criticising Swedish national level gymnastics for being abusive. This text analyses the subsequent debate by identifying the discursive and rhetorical resources used by the involved parties. The analysis shows how the parties negotiate accountability, manage dilemmas of stake and what the possible social consequences of these are. Five narratives are singled out in the debate: the counter narrative, the victim narrative, the defence-speech narrative, the expert narrative and the (...)

From Apocalyptic to Messianic: Philosophia Universalis.Helena Gourko - 1998 - The Paideia Archive: Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy 6:131-136.
Perhaps for the first time in history, the turn of a millennium is directly reflected in philosophy-as an apocalyptic end of philosophy. Recently, an attempt to channel apocalyptic into messianic has been undertaken by Derrida in his Spectres of Marx. However, Derrida's endeavor does not relate directly to philosophy and thus does not alter its apocalyptic landscape. Considering the critical state of contemporary philosophy, it is unclear whether such an alteration can be performed in the West. A radical reinterpretation appears (...)
