_Purpose._ The purpose of the article lies in studying the main socio-anthropological measurements of the problem of recognition represented primarily by the philosophy of recognition of Alex Honneth, which is actualized by the struggle of the Ukrainian people for their existence and national-cultural recognition. A consistent analysis of the communicative paradigm in contemporary philosophy led to the understanding of its transformation into the reality of the problem of recognition and the identification of the main forms of recognition in it, which (...) determine an individual’s perception of the social space as fair or unfair, where his dignity is disrespected. _Theoretical basis._ Turning to the works of Jurgen Habermas, Otfried Hoeffe, Ernst Tugendhat, Stefan Gosepath, and Thomas Rentsch made it possible to supplement the mainly procedural, theoretical-communicative way of philosophizing with a philosophical-anthropological, existential, contextual principle of awareness of recognition as a fundamental principle of justice and the understanding that the brutal, unjust destruction of the "living world" of a person and the state is synonymous with their physical destruction. The thesis of Francis Fukuyama about the relationship between the desire for recognition and human dignity inherent in human nature has acquired an important theoretical and methodological meaning. _Originality._ The article investigates the modern philosophical discourse of the problem of recognition in the socio-anthropological measurements, in the context of the relationship between recognition, the "living world" and justice, non-recognition, humiliation of human dignity, and injustice. And it was also found that the image of recognition represented by modern philosophical thought, as a horizon and condition of human existence, is based on the following components: justice, solidarity, dignity, and care. Exactly addressing the problem of recognition made it possible to answer the question about the anthropological-ontological, existential meaning of the desire of individuals, nations, and states for recognition and outline the ways of transforming recognition as a variant of "communicative utopia" into a real socio-cultural project. _Conclusions._ In contrast to justice, the theory of recognition comes from asymmetrical human relations, which, in the struggle for recognition, must become symmetrical. Although justice takes precedence over ethics of care and recognition, they are not actually in competition with each other, but belong to different but complementary dimensions of human existence. The perspective of philosophical understanding of the problem of recognition itself requires the deepening of its analysis with an existential-anthropological understanding rooted in a new, tragic life experience. Only under such conditions, it is possible to overcome the gap between often abstract philosophical reflections and real personal and social practices. (shrink)

Kant is widely acknowledged for his critique of theoretical reason, his universalistic ethics, and his aesthetics. Scholars, however, often ignore his achievements in the philosophy of law and government. At least four innovations that are still relevant today can be attributed to Kant. He is the first thinker, and to date the only great thinker, to have elevated the concept of peace to the status of a foundational concept of philosophy. Kant links this concept to the political innovation of his (...) time, a republic devoted to human rights. He extends the concept by adding to it the right of nations and cosmopolitan law. This article sets out to identify Karl Jaspers as a European thinker, one who understands 'Europeanness' as a cosmopolitan attitude. It recalls Jaspers bio- graphical convictions to the conception of Europe by referencing several of his publications. Inextricably linked to the cosmopolitan understanding of 'Euro- pean ness' is Jaspers' theory of truth which, as this article intends to show, can only be understood in its plurality of linguistic ambiguity and individual exis- tence. Additionally, Jaspers sees the historical foundations of Europe (...) in the Axial Age of antiquity in which its plurality is already inherent. Ultimately, this culminates in his assertion that in order to be European, one must first become a true person by actualising their selfhood in freedom. (shrink)

Kant entwickelt in der „Kritik der Urteilskraft“ eine philosophische Ästhetik, eine Theorie der organischen Natur. Die beiden scheinbar heterogenen Gegenstandsbereiche sind durch das Prinzip der reflektierenden Urteilskraft, die Idee der Zweckmäßigkeit, verbunden, die der Mensch sowohl bei der Reflexion über die schönen Gegenstände der Natur und der Kunst als auch bei seiner Erforschung der organischen Natur zugrunde legt. Da sich alle Zwecke zuletzt auf den Endzweck des Menschen als moralisches Wesen beziehen, übersteigt die dritte „Kritik“ schließlich die Bereiche von Kunst (...) und Natur und berührt Fragen der Moralphilosophie und der Moraltheologie. Zusätzlich entdeckt Kant im subjektiven Vermögen der Urteilskraft jenes Bindeglied unter den menschlichen Gemütskräften, das einen architektonischen Übergang zwischen den Naturbegriffen des Verstandes in der ersten und dem Freiheitsbegriff der Vernunft in der zweiten „Kritik“ ermöglicht und die theoretische und die praktische Philosophie in einem einzigen philosophischen System vereinigt. Der wirkungsmächtige Begriff einer praktischen Philosophie geht auf Aristoteles zurück. Der Begriff ist ebenso wie sein Gegenbegriff, der der theoretischen Philosophie, ungewöhnlich, sogar provokativ. Otfried Höffe zeigt, dass Ethik als wissenschaftliche und zugleich sittlich engagierte Disziplin zu begreifen ist. Für diesen Zweck bedarf es einer besonderen Rationalitätsform, einer Grundriss-Wissenschaft.

Die "Theorie der Gerechtigkeit" ist der wichtigste Beitrag des englischen Sprachraums, vielleicht sogar der wichtigste Beitrag zur Politischen Ethik des 20. Jahrhunderts überhaupt. John Rawls entwirft hier nicht nur eine weithin überzeugende Theorie zur Schnittmenge von Ethik und Politischer Philosophie. Die klassische Moralphilosophie des Abendlandes lässt sich in zwei Modellen bündeln: in Aristoteles’ Ethik des gelungen-glücklichen Lebens und in Kants Ethik des kategorischen Imperativs. Ein drittes, zwar wirkungsmächtiges, aber nicht klassisches Modell bündelt sich im Werk des Philologen, Schriftstellers und vor allem Philosophen Friedrich Nietzsche. In seiner „Streitschrift“ „Zur Genealogie der Moral“ führt er die abendländische Moralkritik zu einem Höhepunkt. Vernachl?ssigt wurden die Subjekte, von denen in Demokratien doch alle politische Gewalt ausgeht. Dieser Vernachl?ssigung steuert das Thema der B?rgeridentit?t entgegen. Das entscheidende Subjekt, den B?rger, darf man allerdings weder auf den B?rger im engeren Sinn, den Staatsb?rger, verk?rzen, noch bei diesem die B?rgertugenden vergessen.
