Thomas Hobbes’ Lebensaufgabe besteht in einer wissenschaftlichen Staatsphilosophie. Dabei stellt er sich den drei Herausforderungen seiner Epoche: methodisch dem Beweisideal der Mathematik, politisch der blutigen Wirklichkeit der Kriege und Bürgerkriege und moralisch dem Schwinden gemeinsamer Überzeugungen. Kant is widely acknowledged for his critique of theoretical reason, his universalistic ethics, and his aesthetics. Scholars, however, often ignore his achievements in the philosophy of law and government. At least four innovations that are still relevant today can be attributed to Kant. He is the first thinker, and to date the only great thinker, to have elevated the concept of peace to the status of a foundational concept of philosophy. Kant links this concept to the political innovation of his (...) time, a republic devoted to human rights. He extends the concept by adding to it the right of nations and cosmopolitan law. Finally, Kant democratizes Plato's notion of philosopher kings with a concept of 'kingly people'. This book examines all aspects of this important, but neglected, body of Kant's writings. (shrink)

In Germany, Otfried Höffe has been a leading contributor to debates in moral, legal, political, and social philosophy for close to three decades. Höffe's work, brings into relief the relevance of these German discussions to their counterparts in English-language circles. In this book, originally published in Germany in 1990 and expanded since, Höffe proposes an extended and original interpretation of Kant‚ philosophy of law, and social morality. Höffe articulates his reading of Kant in the context of an account of (...) modernity as a "polyphonous project," in which the dominant themes of pluralism and empiricism are countered by the theme of categorically binding moral principles, such as human rights. Paying equal attention to the nuances of Kant's texts and the character of the philosophical issues in their own right, Höffe ends up with a Kantianism that requires, rather than precludes, a moral anthropology and that questions the fashionable juxtaposition of Kant and Aristotle as exemplars of incompatible approaches to ethical and political thought. This article sets out to identify Karl Jaspers as a European thinker, one who understands 'Europeanness' as a cosmopolitan attitude. It recalls Jaspers bio- graphical convictions to the conception of Europe by referencing several of his publications. Inextricably linked to the cosmopolitan understanding of 'Euro- pean ness' is Jaspers' theory of truth which, as this article intends to show, can only be understood in its plurality of linguistic ambiguity and individual exis- tence. Additionally, Jaspers sees the historical foundations of Europe (...) in the Axial Age of antiquity in which its plurality is already inherent. Ultimately, this culminates in his assertion that in order to be European, one must first become a true person by actualising their selfhood in freedom. (shrink)

Kant entwickelt in der „Kritik der Urteilskraft“ eine philosophische Ästhetik, eine Theorie der organischen Natur. Die beiden scheinbar heterogenen Gegenstandsbereiche sind durch das Prinzip der reflektierenden Urteilskraft, die Idee der Zweckmäßigkeit, verbunden, die der Mensch sowohl bei der Reflexion über die schönen Gegenstände der Natur und der Kunst als auch bei seiner Erforschung der organischen Natur zugrunde legt. Da sich alle Zwecke zuletzt auf den Endzweck des Menschen als moralisches Wesen beziehen, übersteigt die dritte „Kritik“ schließlich die Bereiche von Kunst (...) und Natur und berührt Fragen der Moralphilosophie und der Moraltheologie. Zusätzlich entdeckt Kant im subjektiven Vermögen der Urteilskraft jenes Bindeglied unter den menschlichen Gemütskräften, das einen architektonischen Übergang zwischen den Naturbegriffen des Verstandes in der ersten und dem Freiheitsbegriff der Vernunft in der zweiten „Kritik“ ermöglicht und die theoretische und die praktische Philosophie in einem einzigen philosophischen System vereinigt. Der wirkungsmächtige Begriff einer praktischen Philosophie geht auf Aristoteles zurück. Der Begriff ist ebenso wie sein Gegenbegriff, der der theoretischen Philosophie, ungewöhnlich, sogar provokativ. Otfried Höffe zeigt, dass Ethik als wissenschaftliche und zugleich sittlich engagierte Disziplin zu begreifen ist. Für diesen Zweck bedarf es einer besonderen Rationalitätsform, einer Grundriss-Wissenschaft.

Die "Theorie der Gerechtigkeit" ist der wichtigste Beitrag des englischen Sprachraums, vielleicht sogar der wichtigste Beitrag zur Politischen Ethik des 20. Jahrhunderts überhaupt. John Rawls entwirft hier nicht nur eine weithin überzeugende Theorie zur Schnittmenge von Ethik und Politischer Philosophie. Ihm gelingt es darüber hinaus, in der philosophischen Debatte eine Reihe von grundlegenden Paradigmenwechseln vorzunehmen. Nach einer Generation intensiver Diskussion ist der Zeitpunkt gekommen, Bilanz zu ziehen. Das geschieht nicht als rein deskriptiver Überblick über die bisherige Debatte, sondern in Form (...) eines kooperativen Kommentars. Autoren unterschiedlicher philosophischer Herkunft stellen sich die Frage, wie Rawls’ Gedanken zu verstehen sind und welche Tragweite, welche Überzeugungskraft sie für den künftigen Diskurs haben. Die klassische Moralphilosophie des Abendlandes lässt sich in zwei Modellen bündeln: in Aristoteles’ Ethik des gelungen-glücklichen Lebens und in Kants Ethik des kategorischen Imperativs. Ein drittes, zwar wirkungsmächtiges, aber nicht klassisches Modell bündelt sich im Werk des Philologen, Schriftstellers und vor allem Philosophen Friedrich Nietzsche. In seiner „Streitschrift“ „Zur Genealogie der Moral“ führt er die abendländische Moralkritik zu einem Höhepunkt. Vernachl?ssigt wurden die Subjekte, von denen in Demokratien doch alle politische Gewalt ausgeht. Dieser Vernachl?ssigung steuert das Thema der B?rgeridentit?t entgegen. Das entscheidende Subjekt, den B?rger, darf man allerdings weder auf den B?rger im engeren Sinn, den Staatsb?rger, verk?rzen, noch bei diesem die B?rgertugenden vergessen. Selbst wer den Staatsb?rger f?r den wichtigsten Aspekt h?lt, darf die (...) anderen Hinsichten nicht unterschlagen, zumal sie das Staatsb?rgersein beeinflussen.
