  3. The role of forgetting in the evolution and learning of language.Jeffrey Barrett & Kevin J. S. Zollman - unknown
Lewis signaling games illustrate how language might evolve from random behavior. The probability of evolving an optimal signaling language is, in part, a function of what learning strategy the agents use. Here we investigate three learning strategies, each of which allows agents to forget old experience. In each case, we find that forgetting increases the probability of evolving an optimal language. It does this by making it less likely that past partial success will continue to reinforce suboptimal practice. The learning (...)

    Reinforcement with iterative punishment.Jeffrey A. Barrett & Nathan Gabriel - 2022 - Journal of Experimental & Theoretical Artificial Intelligence 36 (7):1361-1383.
We consider the efficacy of various forms of reinforcement learning with punishment in evolving linguistic conventions in the context of Lewis-Skyrms signalling games. We show that the learning strategy of reinforcement with iterative punishment is highly effective at evolving optimal conventions in even complex signalling games. It is also robust and can be easily extended to a self-tuning variety of reinforcement learning. We briefly discuss some of the virtues of reinforcement with iterative punishment and how it may be related to (...)

Provoking Nonepileptic Seizures: The Ethics of Deceptive Diagnostic Testing.Jeffrey H. Burack, Anthony L. Back & Robert A. Pearlman - 1997 - Hastings Center Report 27 (4):24-33.
The use of deception in medical care is highly suspect in this country. Yet there is one condition for which deception is often used as a diagnostic tool. Nonepileptic seizures, a psychiatric condition in which emotional or psychological conflicts manifest themselves unconsciously through bodily symptoms, are currently diagnosed by a procedure called “provocative saline infusion.” The test is fundamentally deceptive, requiring the physician to intentionally and directly lie to the patient, causing the patient to believe that the administered solution caused (...)

Over the last two decades, scientific accounts of religion have received a great deal of scholarly and popular attention both because of their intrinsic interest and because they are widely as constituting a threat to the religion they analyse. The Believing Primate aims to describe and discuss these scientific accounts as well as to assess their implications. The volume begins with essays by leading scientists in the field, describing these accounts and discussing evidence in their favour. Philosophical and theological reflections (...)

The theme of this book is the complex moral psychology of forgiving and remembering in both personal and political contexts. It offers an original account of the moral psychology of interpersonal forgiveness and explores its role in transitional societies. The book also examines the symbolic moral significance of memorialization in these societies and reflects on its relationship to forgiveness.

Conscience.Jeffrey Benjamin White - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 10:437-444.
This work introduces the ACTWith model of moral cognition. This is a model of conscience and conscientious agency, inspired by Socratic philosophy, neurology and artificial intelligence. The ACTWith model is a synthesis across these disciplines, integrating ancient and contemporary insights into the human condition, while distilling this synthesis into a practicable dynamic simplified via architectural paradigms imported from theories of computational models of human learning. It was developed in response to the need in these fields for a clear articulation of (...)

Fine‐Tuning and Cosmology.Jeffrey Koperski - 2015 - In The Physics of Theism: God, Physics, and the Philosophy of Science. Hoboken, New Jersey: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 58–101.
This chapter considers two types of fine‐tuning, those dealing with the initial conditions of the universe and those based on fixed parameters. Three approaches have been taken to argue that fine‐tuning does not need any special explanation. The first is an appeal to coincidence. The second is that the data are biased by our own observations. The third has to do with the nature of probability itself. The chapter assesses each of these objections in detail. Many naturalistic explanations have been (...)

Getting into shape: epidermal morphogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos.Jeffrey S. Simske & Jeff Hardin - 2001 - Bioessays 23 (1):12-23.
The change in shape of the C. elegans embryo from an ovoid ball of cells into a worm-shaped larva is driven by three events within the cells of the hypodermis (epidermis): (1) intercalation of two rows of dorsal cells, (2) enclosure of the ventral surface by hypodermis, and (3) elongation of the embryo. While the behavior of the hypodermal cells involved in each of these processes differs dramatically, it is clear that F-actin and microtubules have essential functions in each of (...)

A rule of minimal rationality: The logical link between beliefs and values.Jeffrey Foss - 1976 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 19 (1-4):341 – 353.
The object of this essay is to demonstrate a logical connection between beliefs and values. It is argued that such a connection can be established only if one keeps in mind the question: What is minimally required in order that it makes sense to speak of beliefs and values at all? Thus, the concept of minimal rationality is indispensable to the task at hand. A particular example of a logical connection between a belief and a value is examined, which leads (...)

    Freud's Religious Scepticism Resurrected.Jeffrey Gordon - 1991 - Religious Studies 27 (3):309 - 317.
In a century dominated by the exacting methods and dramatic successes of science, it is difficult to imagine an informed contemporary religious believer never shaken by the doubt that his or her most sacred ideas are atavisms to a benighted age, vain and empty fantasies. To such a believer, Freud's late monograph, The Future of an Illusion , with its warm, solicitous tone, but relentless scepticism, must seem the patient knell of his or her worst fears. For here Freud uses (...)

    Buddhism Beyond Morality: A Note on Two Senses of Transcendence.Jeffrey Stout - 1978 - Journal of Religious Ethics 6 (2):319 - 325.
This paper takes up the claim, made in some Buddhist texts, that one can transcend morality. The author distinguishes a weak and a strong sense in which this might be so, and explicates the strong sense in terms of Strawson's notion of presupposition.

    I Don’t Know Why I Called You.Jeffrey S. Farroni & Colleen M. Gallagher - 2014 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 4 (1):69-74.
This case study details a request from a patient family member who calls our service without an articulated ethical dilemma. The issue that arose involved the conflict between continuing further medical interventions versus transitioning to supportive or palliative care and transferring the patient home. Beyond the resolution of the ethical dilemma, this narrative illustrates an approach to ethics consultation that seeks practical resolution of ethical dilemmas in alignment with patient goals and values. Importantly, the family’s suffering is addressed through a (...)

As the weeks pass by, one by one, tearful young women are dismissed from the show as the presentation of the final rose (...)
