The question “How can humans learn efficiently to make decisions in a complex, dynamic, and uncertain environment” is still a very open question. We investigate what effects arise when feedback is given in a computer-simulated microworld that is controlled by participants. This has a direct impact on training simulators that are already in standard use in many professions, e.g., for flight simulators for pilots, and a potential impact on a better understanding of human decision making in general. Our study is (...) based on a benchmark microworld with an economic framing, the IWR Tailorshop. N=94 participants played four rounds of the microworld, each 10 months, via a web interface. We propose a new approach to quantify performance and learning, which is based on a mathematical model of the microworld and optimization. Six participant groups receive different kinds of feedback in a training phase, then results in a performance phase without feedback are analyzed. As a main result, feedback of optimal solutions in training rounds improved model knowledge, early learning, and performance, especially when this information is encoded in a graphical representation. Mainstream social psychology focuses on how people characteristically violate norms of action through social misbehaviors such as conformity with false majority judgments, destructive obedience, and failures to help those in need. Likewise, they are seen to violate norms of reasoning through cognitive errors such as misuse of social information, self-enhancement, and an over-readiness to attribute dispositional characteristics. The causes of this negative research emphasis include the apparent informativeness of norm violation, the status of good behavior and judgment as unconfirmable null (...) hypotheses, and the allure of counter-intuitive findings. The shortcomings of this orientation include frequently erroneous imputations of error, findings of mutually contradictory errors, incoherent interpretations of error, an inability to explain the sources of behavioral or cognitive achievement, and the inhibition of generalized theory. Possible remedies include increased attention to the complete range of behavior and judgmental accomplishment, analytic reforms emphasizing effect sizes and Bayesian inference, and a theoretical paradigm able to account for both the sources of accomplishment and of error. A more balanced social psychology would yield not only a more positive view of human nature, but also an improved understanding of the bases of good behavior and accurate judgment, coherent explanations of occasional lapses, and theoretically grounded suggestions for improvement. Gleichheit gilt als ein grundlegendes Konzept der Rechtsphilosophie, nicht nur weil die Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz Grundlage des Rechtsstaates ist, sondern auch weil unterschiedliche Interpretationen von Gleichheit Grundlage wichtiger Gerechtigkeitskonzeptionen innerhalb der Ethik sind. So betonte schon Aristoteles die zentrale Bedeutung von Gleichheit für Gerechtigkeit. Das Ideal der Gleichheit ist spätestens mit der Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitserklärung sowie der Französischen Revolution zum zentralen Bestandteil bedeutender Staatsverfassungen geworden.

An essential prerequisite for the development of a theory of consciousness is the clarification of the fundamental mechanisms underlying conscious processes. In this article I present an approach that sheds new light on these mechanisms. This approach builds on stochastic electrodynamics (SED), a promising theoretical framework that provides a deeper understanding of quantum systems and reveals the origin of quantum phenomena. I outline the most important concepts and findings of SED and interpret the neurophysiological body of evidence in the context (...) of these findings, indicating that the functioning of the brain rests upon exactly the same principles that are characteristic for quantum systems. On this basis, I construct a new hypothesis on the mechanisms behind conscious processes and discuss the new perspectives this hypothesis opens up for consciousness research. In particular, it offers the possibility of elucidating the relationship between brain and consciousness, of specifying the connection between consciousness and information, and of answering the question of what distinguishes conscious processes from unconscious processes. Die Erregung, mit der in den 1960er-Jahren der von Theodor Adorno und anderen so genannte „Positivismusstreit“ ausgetragen wurde, hat sich in den fast 50 Jahren, die vergangen sind, seit 1969 der Sammelband zur Debatte veröffentlicht wurde, weitgehend gelegt. Das macht es möglich, von der Parteinahme für die eine oder andere Seite Abstand zu nehmen und noch einmal präziser die Argumente von damals zu durchdenken. Es zeigt sich, dass in der Diskussion zwischen Karl Popper und Theodor Adorno in Tübingen 1961 die (...) Gemeinsamkeiten die Divergenzen bei weitem überwogen. Erst mit dem Eintritt on Jürgen Habermas und Hans Albert in die Debatte kam eine polemische Schärfe in die Diskussion, zum Teil durch die Etikettierung der Position Poppers als „Positivismus“ durch Habermas und dann auch Adorno. Zusätzlich wird hier versucht, die Debatte der 1960er-Jahre dadurch zu historisieren, dass sie in einen weiteren Zeitrahmen eingebettet wird, der einerseits die weit in die 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre reichende Vorgeschichte des Streits sowie andererseits die Folgen der Auseinandersetzung seit den späten 1960er-Jahren einbezieht.Die Darstellung beruht auf früheren Arbeiten des Verfassers. Zusätzlich werden einige neue Archivfunde präsentiert und inzwischen erschienene Autobiografien bzw. Biografien der Beteiligten des Positivismusstreits ausgewertet. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass sich in Zukunft die bislang nicht zugänglichen Teile des Briefwechsels zwischen Adorno und Popper noch auffinden lassen. (shrink)

It may be, on the other hand, that it is a misdirected solicitude—an anxiety to solve the inherently insoluble. The Absolute, we shall perhaps be told, is a vox nihili—a name for that which, being nothing, has no attributes ; or we, at least, can never hope to characterize it. All our available predicates, being drawn of necessity from a limited field, must ‘ come short‘must prove inadequate for so immense and so august a subject. (shrink)

Um Erfahrungen machen zu können, gilt es nach Kant, «Erscheinungen zu buchstabieren, um sie als Erfahrungen lesen zu können». Dabei droht eine doppelte Erfahrungsunfähigkeit. Einerseits werden Erscheinungen mit Erfahrungen verwechselt, wie in der Legasthenie Buchstaben mit dem Wortsinn. Andererseits glaubt man, Erfahrungen machen und dabei die Erscheinungen übergehen zu können, wie beim Lesen, das nicht mehr auf die Buchstaben achtet. Die Erfahrung ist immer dann bedroht, wenn die Wechselbeziehung zwischen Sinn und Sinnlichkeit aus dem Gleichgewicht gerät, wenn die Sinnlichkeit des (...) Subjektes oder die Verstandestätigkeit des Subjektes überbetont wird. Wie Kant und die Marburger Neukantianer mit der Problematik umgehen, ist Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung. (shrink)

The mother sacrificing herself while rescuing someone else's child is a red herring. Neither behaviorism nor cognitivism can explain it. Unlike behaviorism, however, the cognitive process of projection can explain cooperation in one-shot social dilemmas.

It has become apparent that difficulties to replicate telomeres concern not only the very ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. The challenges already start when the replication fork enters the telomeric repeats. The obstacles encountered consist mainly of noncanonical nucleic acid structures that interfere with replication if not resolved. Replication stress at telomeres promotes the formation of so‐called fragile telomeres displaying an abnormal appearance in metaphase chromosomes though their exact molecular nature remains to be elucidated. A substantial number of factors is required (...) to counteract fragility. In this review we promote the hypothesis that telomere fragility is not caused directly by an initial insult during replication but it results as a secondary consequence of DNA repair of damaged replication forks by the homologous DNA recombination machinery. Incomplete DNA synthesis at repair sites or partial chromatin condensation may become apparent as telomere fragility. Fragility and DNA repair during telomere replication emerges as a common phenomenon which exacerbates in multiple disease conditions. (shrink)

Au cours des diverses périodes allant de 1062 au début du xviie siècle, hommes et femmes se spécialisent dans des rôles différents dans les tournois, en fonction des types d’épreuves et du pays où elles se déroulent. En commençant par le haut, une reine comme Catherine d’Aragon pouvait être la promotrice désignée d’un tournoi royal et, sur le continent, à l’occasion de mariages de cour, les épouses et leurs filles d’honneur constituaient le groupe central des personnages regardant les actions depuis (...) leurs balcons. En Allemagne, seules les jeunes femmes vertueuses étaient admises à la finale de la danse de la bougie. À la Cour anglaise, les femmes ne déterminaient pas les vainqueurs des tournois ; cela était une prérogative réservée aux hérauts et juges du tournoi. Lors de la cérémonie pour les vainqueurs, seules les dames des plus hauts échelons de la société distribuaient les prix à partir des décisions des hérauts. Même si, lors des cérémonies d’ouverture, les adversaires et/ou répondants paradaient occasionnellement avec leurs « inévitables jeunes demoiselles » dans un char, les jeunes femmes n’appartenaient pas à la liste des prix, mais à l’imagination des chevaliers. Les faits et la fiction étaient des mondes séparés qui, cependant, s’influençaient mutuellement fortement. Malgré les tentations, les amours courtisanes et les tournois ne se sont jamais vraiment rencontrés sur les terrains de joutes. Les hommes restaient entre eux et les représentantes du beau sexe de toutes les strates sociales inférieures n’étaient autorisées qu’en tant que spectatrices. (shrink)
