Art as Revolt: Thinking Politics Through Immanent Aesthetics.David Fancy & Hans Arthur Skott-Myhre (eds.) - 2019 - Chicago: Mcgill-Queen's University Press.
How can we imagine a future not driven by capitalist assumptions about humans and the wider world? How are a range of contemporary artistic and popular cultural practices already providing pathways to post-capitalist futures? Authors from a variety of disciplines answer these questions through writings on blues and hip hop, virtual reality, post-colonial science fiction, virtual gaming, riot grrrls and punk, raku pottery, post-pornography fanzines, zombie films, and role playing. The essays in Art as Revolt are clustered around themes such (...)

Discourses of the Willkommenskultur (Welcoming culture) in Germany.Friederike Windel, Arita Balaram & Krystal M. Perkins - 2022 - Critical Discourse Studies 19 (1):93-116.
Given the rise of populist parties in Germany and the charge that multiculturalism is dead, the present research examines how everyday Germans formulate an account of cultural diversity and multiculturalism. We employ a critical discursive psychological analysis and focus particularly on the arguments used to criticize cultural diversity and multiculturalism. Asynchronous online interviews were conducted with eighteen native-born German citizens. The data analysis shows that participants criticized cultural diversity and multiculturalism by deploying ‘Leitkultur-style’ nationalistic discourses and normalizing the hierarchical relations (...)

Exploring health inequities through the actor‐network theory lens.Mar'yana Fisher, Joanna Tulloch & Olga Petrovskaya - 2024 - Nursing Philosophy 25 (4):e12504.
Social theory plays an important role in the nursing discipline and nursing inquiry as it helps conceptually embed nursing in the larger picture of the social world. For example, a broad category of critical theory provides a unique lens for uncovering social conditions of inequity and oppression. Among the sociological theories, actor‐network theory (ANT) is an approach to research and analysis that has recently gained interest among nurse philosophers and researchers. Studies guided by ANT seek to understand phenomena of interest (...)

Malign and benign neglect: a local food system and the myth of sustainable redevelopment in Appalachia Ohio.Angela M. Chapman & Harold A. Perkins - 2020 - Agriculture and Human Values 37 (1):113-127.
Local food systems seem virtuous in the larger context of the neoliberalization of global food systems and increasing food insecurity. However, local food systems are critiqued for reproducing neoliberalism when they prioritize niche-market consumerism over enhancing access for poor people. Advocates, in contrast, insist local food systems contribute to an equitable political economy of food if they are place-based and inclusive. Local food systems must not, according to them, be condemned monolithically in light of their neoliberal tendencies, but evaluated instead (...)

Polish economic clusters and their efforts to protect the environment – selected examples.Joanna Dyrda-Muskus - 2014 - Journal for Perspectives of Economic Political and Social Integration 20 (1-2):25-36.
This paper presents the benefits they can obtain business which aim to protect the environment. The environment protection has found its place and affects the process of systemic change of the Polish economy. This article assumes that building a competitive economy and enterprise development based on the principle of sustainable development requires the development of mechanisms for mutual benefits. These will be the economic mechanisms, technical and technological, and social. All these mechanisms are concentrated in clusters. Pursue sustainable development policies, (...)

Yours Faithfully, Bertrand Russell: A Lifelong Fight for Peace, Justice, and Truth in Letters to the Editor.Bertrand Russell & Ray Perkins - 2002 - Open Court Publishing.
"Yet Russell was more than a great intellect; he was also a political animal. From the beginning of his long professional life he emphasized the importance of practice as well as theory. He was twice imprisoned by the British government for his political utterances. With his razor-sharp irony and morally impassioned rhetoric, Russell took on the forces of injustice, ignorance, and cruelty; one of his chief weapons was the letter to the editor.".

Epistemological Error: A Whole Systems View of Converging Crises.Jody Joanna Boehnert - 2012 - Philosophy of Management 11 (1):95-107.
Gregory Bateson said that we are “governed by epistemologies that we know to be wrong” back in 1972. In the same book Bateson wrote: “the organism that destroys its environment destroys itself.” Almost forty years later, global ecological systems are in steep decline and converging crises make a deep evaluation of the underlying premises of our philosophical traditions an urgent imperative. This paper will suggest that the roots of the economic crisis are epistemological and that, to correct this error, whole (...)

    Gender and family effects on the “second-shift” domestic activity of college-educated young adults.Debra K. Demeis & H. Wesley Perkins - 1996 - Gender and Society 10 (1):78-93.
This study examines gender differences in the extent and type of household activity and sense of domestic obligation across familial stages within a sample of young college-educated adults. When children are present, substantial gender differences appear in housework and perceived home obligations. Implications of the results are discussed in terms of gender socialization and preparation for parenting.

Add Bilingualism to the Mix: L2 Proficiency Modulates the Effect of Cognitive Reserve Proxies on Executive Performance in Healthy Aging.Federico Gallo, Joanna Kubiak & Andriy Myachykov - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
We investigated the contribution of bilingual experience to the development of cognitive reserve when compared with other, traditionally more researched, CR proxies, in a sample of cognitively healthy senior bilingual speakers. Participants performed in an online study where, in addition to a wide inventory of factors known to promote CR, we assessed several factors related to their second language use. In addition, participants’ inhibitory executive control was measured via the Flanker Task. We used Structural Equation Modeling to derive a latent (...)

Heaven and Earth Are Not Humane: The Problem of Evil in Classical Chinese Philosophy.Franklin Perkins - 2014 - Bloomington: Indiana University Press.
That bad things happen to good people was as true in early China as it is today. Franklin Perkins uses this observation as the thread by which to trace the effort by Chinese thinkers of the Warring States Period, a time of great conflict and division, to seek reconciliation between humankind and the world. Perkins provides rich new readings of classical Chinese texts and reflects on their significance for Western philosophical discourse.

Motivation and the heart in the Xing zi Ming Chu.Franklin Perkins - 2009 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 8 (2):117-131.
In both content and historical position, the “ Xing Zi Ming Chu ” is of obvious significance for understanding the development of classical Chinese philosophy, particularly Confucian moral psychology. This article aims to clarify one aspect of the text, namely, its account of human motivation. This account can be divided into two parts. The first describes human motivation primarily in passive terms of response to external forces, as emotions arise from our nature when stimulated by things in the world. The (...)

    On the Alleged Right to Participate in High‐Risk Research.Joanna Różyńska - 2015 - Bioethics 29 (7):451-461.
Reigning regulatory frameworks for biomedical research impose on researchers and research ethics committees an obligation to protect research participants from risks that are unnecessary, disproportionate to potential research benefits, and non-minimized. Where the research has no potential to produce results of direct benefit to the subjects and the subjects are unable to give consent, these requirements are strengthened by an additional condition, that risks should not exceed a certain minimal threshold. In this article, I address the question of whether there (...)

There is now a general consensus that Xunzi's criticism of Zisi and Mengzi for advocating wu Xing 五行 is explained by the excavated text known as Five Conducts, but the five conducts play no significant role in the Mengzi. This article aims to determine more precisely what the Mengzi and Wu xing have in common, while also making sense of the ways in which they diverge. The first part of the article analyzes the distinction between goodness and de 德. The (...)

Culturally Sustaining Music Education and Epistemic Travel.Emily Good-Perkins - 2021 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 29 (1):47.
Abstract:The examination of racist, normalized ideology within American education is not new. Theoretical and practical conceptions of social justice in education have attempted to attend to educational inequality. Oftentimes, these attempts have reinstated the status quo because they were framed within the same Eurocentric paradigm. To address this, Django Paris proposed culturally sustaining pedagogy as a means of empowering minoritized students by sustaining the cultural competence of their communities and dismantling coloniality within educational practices. He, Michael Domínguez, and others argue (...)

The question of whether AI systems such as robots can or should be afforded moral agency or patiency is not one amenable either to discovery or simple reasoning, because we as societies constantly reconstruct our artefacts, including our ethical systems. Consequently, the place of AI systems in society is a matter of normative, not descriptive ethics. Here I start from a functionalist assumption, that ethics is the set of behaviour that maintains a society. This assumption allows me to exploit the (...)
