In this editorial introduction, we set out the contexts, aims and contents of this special issue on Schelling’s influence on later religious and theological thought, as well as the rationale behind its genesis.

RNAs have emerged as a major target for diagnostics and therapeutics approaches. Regulatory nonprotein‐coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in particular display remarkable versatility. They can fold into complex structures and interact with proteins, DNA, and other RNAs, thus modulating activity, localization, or interactome of multi‐protein complexes. Thus, ncRNAs confer regulatory plasticity and represent a new layer of regulatory control. Interestingly, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) tend to acquire complex secondary and tertiary structures and their function—in many cases—is dependent on structural conservation rather than (...) primary sequence conservation.Whereas for many proteins, structure and its associated function are closely connected, for lncRNAs, the structural domains that determine functionality and its interactome are still not well understood. Numerous approaches for analyzing the structural configuration of lncRNAs have been developed recently. Here, will provide an overview of major experimental approaches used in the field, and discuss the potential benefit of using combinatorial strategies to analyze lncRNA modes of action based on structural information. In "The Frankfurt School on Religion," Eduardo Mendieta has brought together a collection of readings and essays revealing both the deep connections that the Frankfurt School has always maintained with religion as well as the significant contribution that its work has to offer. We prove completeness of preferential conditional logic with respect to convexity over finite sets of points in the Euclidean plane. A conditional is defined to be true in a finite set of points if all extreme points of the set interpreting the antecedent satisfy the consequent. Equivalently, a conditional is true if the antecedent is contained in the convex hull of the points that satisfy both the antecedent and consequent. Our result is then that every consistent formula without nested conditionals (...) is satisfiable in a model based on a finite set of points in the plane. The proof relies on a result by Richter and Rogers showing that every finite abstract convex geometry can be represented by convex polygons in the plane. (shrink)

According to Jon Elster, mechanisms are frequently occurring and easily recognizable causal patterns that are triggered under generally unknown conditions or with indeterminate consequences. In the absence of laws, moreover, mechanisms provide explanations. In this paper I argue that Elster’s view has difficulties with progressing knowledge. Normally, filling in the causal picture without revising it should not threaten one’s explanation. But this seems to be Elster’s case. The critique is constructive in the sense that it is built up from a (...) discussion of a mechanism that might explain ‘unwarranted’ risk taking in connection with swimming—a mechanism that is mirrored in the proverb: The best swimmers drown. Was heisst es, dass sich unsere geistigen Zustande auf eine Welt beziehen, deren Teil wir sind? Eine Analyse dieser Intentionalitat unserer geistigen Zustande muss sowohl die Rolle ihrer begrifflich-abstrakten als auch ihrer qualitativ-sinnlichen Aspekte genau bestimmen. In dieser Abhandlung wird der Versuch unternommen, eine Analyse des Verhaltnisses begrifflicher und nicht-begrifflicher Elemente im intentionalen Gegenstandsbezug durchzufuhren, und zwar auf der Basis einer systematischen Untersuchung von Kants Unterscheidung zwischen Sinnlichkeit und Verstand. Als Leitfaden dient die Auseinandersetzung, die Wilfrid Sellars uber einen langen (...) Zeitraum mit der theoretischen Philosophie Kants gefuhrt hat. Das hat zwei Grunde: Zum einen hat Sellars sich im Rahmen dieser Auseinandersetzung intensiv mit der kantischen Konzeption des Verhaltnisses von nicht-begrifflichen und begrifflichen Elementen in unserem intentionalen Weltbezug beschaftigt. Zum anderen war Kants Theorie fur Sellars keineswegs bloss von historischem Interesse, sondern hatte fur ihn bleibende systematische Bedeutung, da sein eigenes philosophisches System im Kern durch und durch kantisch ist. Sellars' Interpretation ist deshalb dazu geeignet, zwischen der exegetischen und der systematischen Perspektive zu vermitteln, deren Verbindung fur die Methodologie der vorliegenden Untersuchung charakteristisch ist.Die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen beiden Autoren soll dazu beitragen, die Frage nach der Beziehung von begrifflichen und sinnlichen Aspekten unserer Erfahrung zu klaren. Fur beide betrifft diese Frage den Kern der Problematik unseres Verhaltnisses zu einer unabhangig von uns existierenden Wirklichkeit. Ihre Beantwortung ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil fur das Verstandnis unseres intentionalen Bezugs auf eine Welt, deren Teil wir sind. Dass eine kantische Konzeption des Verhaltnisses von Sinnlichkeit und Verstand eine systematisch uberzeugende Antwort auf diese Frage liefern kann, soll in dieser Untersuchung gezeigt werden. In this article, Gregory of Nyssa is presented as a trinitarian thinker. It is argued that, in order to appreciate the relevance of triadic structures for his thought, one must take into consideration that the central place the Trinity held in his thought was the result of his involvement in the final phase of the so‑called trinitarian controversy of the fourth century. The article therefore begins with a brief account of the theoretical problems that arose within the later stages of (...) this debate. Particular attention is paid in this connection to the positions of Athanasius and his moderate opponents. In a second step, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory’s older brother, is introduced as a radically innovative voice in the debate. While previous thinkers were agreed on the derivative character of the divinity as passed on from the Father to the other members of the Trinity, Basil insisted on their ontological coordination with the help of terminology taken from Aristotle’s Categories. Gregory’s trinitarian system, which is presented in the remainder of the essay, builds on Basil’s foundations. Through an examination of key texts it is shown, however, that he added a greater concern for the common or shared ousia or physis by means of which divine unity was guaranteed. In this connection, Gregory developed a realistic theory of the universal which he also applied in other parts of his thought, notably his doctrine of creation. The article concludes with the observation that Gregory’s interest in trinitarian structures was different from that of Augustine in that the fundamental problem was the relationship of unity and difference, whereas the number ‘three’ did not play a recognisable role in the Cappadocian’s speculations. On what I will call the No Subject view, there is a sense in which one may be aware of a thought, conceived as an event in one's stream of consciousness, without being aware of oneself thinking something. Philosophical work on the delusion of thought insertion is one of the areas in which the No Subject view has been highly influential: the view has framed what, in the philosophy of mind, has become the standard interpretation of the delusion. Here I (...) want to present a challenge to the No Subject view, developing from reflection on the ontology of thinking. I will also consider how, if the standard interpretation fails, we are to understand thought insertion. In particular, I will suggest that we should question the widespread assumption that understanding the delusion has to be a matter of making sense of it. (shrink)

Die Forderung des Deutschen Konstruktivismus nach „Begründung der Wissenschaft“ ist weiten Kreisen geläufig; was mit dieser Forderung bezweckt, inwieweit sie gerechtfertigt und auf welche Weise sie gegebenenfalls zu erfüllen ist, scheint dagegen außerhalb des konstruktivistischen Lagers weniger klar. Im vorliegenden Beitrag soll versucht werden, unter weitgehendem Verzicht auf formale Details ein wesentliches Lehrstück des obigen Programms zu erläutern, nämlich die „Begründung von Logik“. Dazu möchte ich zunächst klären, was sich in diesem Zusammenhang unter „Begründung“ verstehen läßt. Ferner werde ich skizzieren, (...) wie Anfangsstücke der Logik gegenwärtig außerhalb des Konstruktivismus betrieben werden, und inwiefern es hierbei zu „Begründungsdefiziten“ kommen könnte. Schließlich soll ein Überblick gegeben werden, wie sich der Deutsche Konstruktivismus Lösungen der von ihm lokalisierten Probleme vorstellt. Abschließend wird angedeutet, wie analoge Lösungen im Rahmen eines klassischen Logikaufbaus aussehen könnten. (shrink)

Das Fach Kunstgeschichte hat den Werkbegriff – anders als den Kunstbegriff – kaum zum Gegenstand eigenen Nachdenkens gemacht. Dennoch hat der Begriff die Praxis der Disziplin nicht unwesentlich geprägt. Selbst im aktuellen Fachdiskurs, der das Wort ›Werk‹ aufgrund seiner Konnotationen oftmals durch andere Begriffe ersetzt, wirken einige Implikate der Werkästhetik nach. Dies gilt insbesondere für jüngere Überlegungen zur Macht von Bildern und zur agency von Artefakten. Der Beitrag nimmt diese Ausgangslage zum Anlass, um an die phänomenologische Grundunterscheidung zwischen dem dinglichen (...) Kunstwerk und dem durch den Betrachter mitkonstituierten ästhetischen Objekt zu erinnern. Diese fundamentale Differenzierung, die im Anschluss an Mikel Dufrenne näher erläutert wird, könnte jenseits der Scheinalternative zwischen konstruktivistischen und animistischen Ansätzen einen neuen Weg weisen, um zu verstehen, warum Bildern und Artefakten so häufig Macht oder agency zugesprochen wird.
