In fact these disciplines are rife with internal divisions between different, often incompatible, systems. Do these disagreements admit of resolution? I was in manufacturing for over thirty years and a manager for nearly twenty-five. During that time it never occurred to me that the consequentialist, utilitarian framework I used was inadequate as a conceptual framework for making decisions to ensure organisational viability and success.1 The framework gave three criteria which enabled me to construct a rational approach to issues associated with my role as a manager: To show that this framework is adequate as a basis for managerial decision making I (...) want to spell out the logical implications of the three criteria and show that they are necessary and jointly sufficient to provide an epistemically sound framework for managerial decisions. I will argue that we can look to managerial practice for examples which can serve as paradigms for constructing a pragmatic approach to management decision making, one that — when employed correctly — will result in the best moral outcome for all those affected by a decision.2 This approach is derived from, and ultimately justified by, the primary role responsibility of a manager to create and implement a healthy work environment. This is one designed to be viable so that the organisation can compete successfully in the marketplace and meet the morally minimal standard that we ought not to cause unnecessary and avoidable harm to innocent people. Because the approach is goal directed, it is teleological and consequential in nature. I maintain that a workplace, or organisation, is healthy when all the components that constitute it are working coherently together to achieve legitimate organisational goals designed to ensure the best chances of being viable and competitive. Peirce war ein obsessiver Zeichner. Neben einer graphischen Logik entwickelte er eine zeichnerische Praxis, die untrennbar mit seinem Denken verwoben war, in ihrer philosophischen Relevanz aber bislang übersehen wurde. Der Band versammelt konkrete Fallstudien zu zahlreichen hier erstmals publizierten Zeichnungen (...) von Peirce. Une invitation, reçue au début de l’automne 2011, à intervenir dans la séance du 7 mars 2012 d’un séminaire tenu à l’EHESS sur l’islamophobie, a été l’occasion de traiter de « l’affaire Gouguenheim » plus de trois ans après son irruption dans la sphère médiatique. Cette nouvelle lecture d’Aristote au Mont Saint-Michel a permis de mettre en évidence l’importance que Sylvain Gouguenheim attribue à un texte du haut Moyen Age pour suivre la diffusion de l’hellénisme dans l’Europe latine. Il s’agit (...) d’une lettre adressée par le pape Paul 1er à Pépin le Bref. Ce document, le plus souvent négligé par les latinistes en raison de ses obscurités, a excité la sagacité des hellénistes, qui ont très majoritairement montré la difficulté d’en tirer des informations positives. La situation est singulière, si l’on se souvient que, pour l’essentiel, ce sont des latinistes et des arabisants qui ont mené la charge contre les impostures gouguenheimiennes. À la faveur de ce cas d’espèce, « l’affaire Gouguenheim » jette une lumière crue sur la place dérisoire que, pour des raisons historiques, l’enseignement supérieur accorde en France à la philosophie médiévale. Le scandale repose, certes, sur les manipulations d’un agrégé d’histoire ; mais il dévoile aussi l’une des lacunes de l’institution universitaire hexagonale dans l’enseignement de la philosophie médiévale. Since the mid‐1950s, the various research programs within cognitive science have advanced our basic understanding of human mental function. Over the past 20 years, this basic science of mind has also contributed to the genesis of an applied science of learning and teaching that can powerfully inform educational practice and dramatically improve educational outcomes. Classroom practice based on this applied science differs from traditional instruction in several ways. Instruction based on cognitive theory envisions learning as an active, strategic process. It (...) assumes that learning follows developmental trajectories within subject‐matter domains. It recognizes that learning is guided by the learners' introspective awareness and control of their mental processes. It emphasizes that learning is facilitated by social, collaborative settings that value self‐directed student dialogue. (shrink)

The possibility of domain restrictions that allow the consistent use of majority-based aggregators for rankings of objects has been widely explored. This paper extends this exploration to structures in which equivalence relations or classifications are aggregated, and shows that there is very limited scope for such restrictions in the binary structure of Mirkin and in the unary structure of Maniquet and Mongin. We develop a hybrid structure that combines binary and unary conditions on the aggregator, and that allows the use (...) of a majority-based aggregator if and only if each object is eligible for inclusion in no more than two categories out of some greater number. We also show that in many circumstances, the surjectivity requirement of Maniquet and Mongin implicitly introduces binary conditions on the aggregator, and that their structure is entailed by the hybrid structure introduced here. Despite its well documented failures in the past to cope with the environmental damage caused by major transport projects, and despite lack of progress in resolving the causes of these failures, Britain's Department of the Environment now proposes to apply it not just to projects, but to the formulation of policy. Curious.

Les lignes éditoriales et politiques des journaux permettent d'identifier clairement des prises de position assez stéréotypées, qui vont du jugement laudateur à la critique et à la dénonciation du conservatisme. Même l'agonie finale du pape ne donne pas lieu à un traitement identique. Toutefois, les choix iconographiques illustrant le bilan de sa vie laissent apparaître (...) un certain consensus sur les étapes marquantes de son pontificat, même si les jugements émis sur la « génération Jean-Paul II », sont très divergents.Far from a consensus on the meaning to be given to the life of John Paul II, the French press has proposed a very wide range of treatments. Editorial guidelines and policy papers clearly identify pronouncements rather stereotypical, ranging from laudatory judgment to criticism and denunciation of conservatism. Even the final death throes the Pope does not give rise to identical treatment. However, the iconographic choices illustrating the balance of his life reveal a consensus on the milestones of his pontificate, even if the judgments issued on "John Paul II generation" are very divergent. Dans la presse des trois pays analysés, une approche commune de l'événement émerge, reposant sur des valeurs, des croyances et des symboles communs qui ont certes existé auparavant, mais qui ont émergé sur la place publique à l'occasion de cet événement. Il s'agit principalement de la solidarité humaine, de ce qu'on peut qualifier « d'esprit humanitaire», porté avant tout par les jeunes regroupés au sein de ce qu'on appelle de plus en plus souvent la « génération JP2 ». En revanche, (...) les différences sautent aux yeux quand on analyse la réappropriation culturelle de l'événement dans les trois pays analysés. Chaque peuple fait appel à son histoire ancienne ou récente et à la sensibilité politique qui lui est propre. La mobilisation d'archétypes, de symboles nationaux ou religieux qui en résulte est particulière à chacune des cultures. Mais ce qui semble commun dans le traitement médiatique de la mort de Jean-Paul II c'est l'émergence d'une certaine sensibilité cosmopolite parmi la jeune « génération JP2 ». C'est sans doute le phénomène le plus frappant de cet événement international qu'est la mort du pape.In the press three countries analyzed, a common event emerges, based on values, beliefs and common symbols which certainly existed before, but which have emerged on the public during this event. It is mainly human solidarity, of what may be termed "humanitarian spirit", carried primarily by young grouped in what is called more often "JP2 generation". However, the differences are obvious when analyzing the cultural reappropriation of the event in the three countries analyzed. Every nation uses its ancient history and recent political sensitivity of its own. Mobilization of archetypes, national or religious symbols that results is unique to each culture. But what seems to be common in the media treatment of the death of John Paul II is the emergence of a certain cosmopolitan sensibility among the young "JP2 generation". This is probably the most striking phenomenon of this international event the death of the pope. (shrink)

De nombreux sujets ont été traités, même dans les milieux qui considéraient habituellement l'Église et la religion comme une menace pour la démocratie et pour la séparation de l'Église et de l'État en Pologne. Par ailleurs, l'ensemble des manifestations populaires en Pologne autour de cette mort, ont donné lieu (...) à l'émergence du thème, discuté, de « génération Jean-Paul II », sa vie étant présentée comme une nouvelle impulsion donnée à la culture chrétienne dans son pays, en établissant du coup des parallèles avec ce qu'avait été la «génération Solidarnosc» aux débuts des années 1980.On the occasion of the death of Pope John Paul II, the Polish press has published numerous texts of the deceased and a debate on religious content has deeply permeated the public sphere. Many topics were covered, even in environments that traditionally considered the Church and religion as a threat to democracy and the separation of church and state in Poland. Moreover, all the popular protests in Poland about this death, led to the emergence of the theme discussed, "John Paul II generation" life is presented as a new impetus to Christian culture in his country, establishing the coup parallels with what had been the "Solidarity generation" in the early 1980s. This article examines how scientists and regulators distribute the benefit of the doubt about drug safety under conditions of scientific uncertainty. The focus of the empirical research is the regulatory controversy over the hepatorenal toxicity of benoxaprofen in the United Kingdom and the United States. By scrutinizing the technical coherence of the arguments put forward by industrial and government scientists, it is concluded that these scientists are willing to award the commercial interests of the pharmaceutical industry an enormous benefit of (...) the sccentific doubt, which is not consistent with the best interests of patients. Interpretative flexibility, the burden of proof falling on regulators and their trust in, and dependence on, industrial scientists facilitates that distribution of the benefit of the scientific doubt. However, regulatory authorities' need for viability and the rationality common to opposing scientific views suggest that it is possible, in principle, to alter this dominant trend. To achieve adequate patient protection, drug regulation in the United Kingdom and the United States requires extensive reform. Some preliminary policy changes are sketched. (shrink)
