“Constrained neither physically nor morally”: Schiller, Aesthetic Freedom, and the Power of Play.Karen E. Davis - 2021 - Journal of Aesthetic Education 55 (2):36-50.
The general conceit of Schiller’s aesthetic education is that our experiences with art and beauty set us free from internal and external constraints and allow us to embrace our full humanity as rational and sensuous beings. Experiencing the aesthetic, or the play impulse, puts one in a state of aesthetic determinacy—or rather indeterminacy—that Schiller calls the highest sense of freedom, aesthetic freedom. Gail K. Hart examines Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange as an example of what Schillerian aesthetic education (...)

Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals.Lara Denis (ed.) - 2005 - Peterborough, CA: Broadview Press.
Kant’s _Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals_, first published in 1785, is still one of the most widely read and influential works of moral philosophy. This Broadview edition combines a newly revised version of T.K. Abbott’s respected translation with material crucial for placing the _Groundwork_ in the context of Kant’s broader moral thought. A varied selection of other ethical writings by Kant on subjects including our moral duties, fundamental principles of justice, the concept of happiness, and the relation of morality (...)

    Multi-Factor Causal Disjunctivism: a Nyāya-Informed Account of Perceptual Disjunctivism.Anand Jayprakash Vaidya - 2020 - Sophia 60 (4):917-940.
Perceptual disjunctivism is a controversial thesis about perception. One familiar characterization of the thesis maintains that there is no common epistemic kind that is present in both veridical and non-veridical cases of perception. For example, the good case, in which one sees a yellow lemon, and the bad case, in which one hallucinates a yellow lemon, share a specific first-person phenomenology, being indistinguishable from the first-person point of view; however, seeing a yellow lemon and hallucinating a yellow lemon do not, (...)

The contributors to this new philosophical and historical examination of Vico, Herder, Schiller, and Goethe are Karl J. Fink, James W. Marchand, Harry Ritter, K. Michael Seibt, and David R. Stevenson. Their essays and commentary address the question why this generation represented by its great minds suddenly discovered science—a question posed previously but only tentatively explored. Taken together, the essayists reveal significant new insights into the roles of language, imagination, intuition, empathy, modes of perception, and individualism in scientific creativity (...)

Abraham a Sancta Clara adıyla ünlenen Johann Ulrich Megerle 17. yüzyılda Almanca konuşulan coğrafyanın en önde gelen vaizlerindendir.

F.C.S. Schiller on pragmatism and humanism: selected writings, 1891-1939.Ferdinand Canning Scott Schiller (ed.) - 2008 - Amherst, N.Y.: Humanity Books.
The renaissance of pragmatism in recent decades has stimulated renewed study of the classical pragmatists. Until this volume, F. C. S. Schiller (1864–1937) was the only major pragmatist from the classical era whose significant writings remained uncollected for renewed scholarly study. The forty-two pieces in this collection represent Schiller's finest writings. They range across a broad spectrum of specific topics: logic and scientific method, meaning and truth, pluralism and monism, personalism and idealism, metaphysics and values, evolution and religion, (...)

  38. Review: Lee, The German 'Mittelweg': Garden theory and philosophy in the time of Kant[REVIEW]Corey W. Dyck - 2009 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 47 (3):pp. 476-477.
Kant's dismissive reference in the Critique of Judgment to landscape gardening as "nothing but the ornamentation of the ground" is puzzling since, as an art that seems like a product of nature, the garden should be a paradigm case of fine art. Additionally, it runs counter to a growing academic interest in garden theory in the late 1700s, as Michael Lee documents in this often overwrought but useful volume. After Kant, German academic philosophy was bedevilled by irresolvable oppositions between reason (...)

    Hegel in Berichten seiner Zeitgenossen. [REVIEW]B. H. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (4):762-763.
This volume starts where the four-volume work by Johannes Hoffmeister, Briefe von und an Hegel, left off. It consists of excerpts from letters, diaries, memoirs, newspaper and journal articles, etc., much of which has never been published before. What emerges is a conflicting picture of Hegel, the man--from which the reader can take his choice. The comments are from contemporaries: relatives, friends, acquaintances, students, colleagues, admirers, critics, and last, but not least, enemies. The chapters are organized chronologically by city of (...)

On the aesthetic education of man.Friedrich Schiller - 1954 - Mineola, N.Y.: Dover Publications. Edited by Reginald Snell.
A classic of 18th-century thought, Schiller’s treatise on the role of art in society ranks among German philosophy’s most profound works. An important contribution to the history of ideas, it employs a political analysis of contemporary society—and of the French Revolution, in particular—to define the relationship between beauty and art. Schiller’s proposal of art as fundamental to the development of society and the individual remains an influential concept, and this volume offers his philosophy’s clearest, most relevant expression. Translated (...)

I introduce game-theoretic models for threats to the discussion of threats in speech act theory. I first distinguish three categories of verbal threats: conditional threats, categorical threats, and covert threats. I establish that all categories of threats can be characterized in terms of an underlying conditional structure. I argue that the aim—or illocutionary point—of a threat is to change the conditions under which an agent makes decisions in a game. Threats are moves in a game that instantiate a subgame in (...)

We are often justified in acting on the basis of evidential confirmation. I argue that such evidence supports belief in non-quantificational generic generalizations, rather than universally quantified generalizations. I show how this account supports, rather than undermines, a Bayesian account of confirmation. Induction from confirming instances of a generalization to belief in the corresponding generic is part of a reasoning instinct that is typically (but not always) correct, and allows us to approximate the predictions that formal epistemology would make.
