How do we use our mental images of the present to reconstruct our past? Maurice Halbwachs addressed this question for the first time in his work on collective memory, which established him as a major figure in the history of sociology. This volume, the first comprehensive English-language translation of Halbwach's writings on the social construction of memory, fills a major gap in the literature on the sociology of knowledge. Halbwachs' primary thesis is that human memory can only function within a (...) collective context. Collective memory, Halbwachs asserts, is always selective; various groups of people have different collective memories, which in turn give rise to different modes of behavior. Halbwachs shows, for example, how pilgrims to the Holy Land over the centuries evoked very different images of the events of Jesus' life; how wealthy old families in France have a memory of the past that diverges sharply from that of the nouveaux riches; and how working class construction of reality differ from those of their middle-class counterparts. With a detailed introduction by Lewis A. Coser, this translation will be an indispensable source for new research in historical sociology and cultural memory. Lewis A. The character of norms is a relevant issue in the contemporary legal philosophy and in the metaethics. The analysis of Lewis’ sugguestions concerning the fictional statements (sentences “describing” the fiction) prima facie may seem to be useless from the perspective of law. However, the situation is different, due to the fact that it is possible to treat the legal text as the description of possible world. The issue is analyzed in the paper.

W artykule przedstawione zostaną różne sformułowania argumentu z pragnień, wysuniętego przeciwko naturalizmowi, autorstwa Clive’a S. Lewisa. Analizie zostaną poddane zarzuty o brak logicznej poprawności jego wywodu oraz dotyczące zwodniczego charakteru czynników irracjonalnych, do jakich zaliczają się uczucia i pragnienia. Wykazane zostanie, że sformułowania, w których mamy do czynienia z brakiem konkluzywności antynaturalistycznego wniosku Lewisa, można jednak traktować jako poznawczo wartościowe, gdyż są one oparte na indukcyjnym schemacie wnioskowania. Istnieją natomiast sformułowania, które jedynie wielkim kosztem, jakim jest uznanie Wszechświata (...) za absurdalny, można uznać za niekonkluzywne. The article tries to answer the following questions: Why did Lewis Carroll\'s ideas, expressed in the form of fairy tales, fascinate numerous analytical philosophers? What does Carroll\'s contribution to the contemporary logic and philosophy consist in? The basic thesis of the article is that Lewis Carroll - remaining in the Anglo-Saxon tradition of David Hume\'s and George Berkeley\'s philosophy - supplied material illustrating the problems connected with the use of language. He showed how improper use of language leads to formation (...) of philosophical problems. The article presents Carroll\'s output. He was one of the pioneers of symbolic logic that he developed in Boole\'s and De Morgan\'s tradition - in the field of the so-called recreation mathematics that he popularized in the form of riddles, puzzles, doublets and puns, compared by some logicians to a formal system. The article presents the essence of the theory of language developed by Carroll, in which language may be something hermetic with only one person having access to it (the case of Humpty Dumpty), but also something common, something social (Alice\'s conversation with the White King). Attention is paid to the fact that Carroll differentiated between what is nonsensical and what is absurd (the criterion being its relation to logic). It is pointed that Carroll\'s aim was first of all discovering the nonsense that is hidden behind the formulation of a metaphysical problem. In the article also the connections are studied between Carroll and Ludwig Wittgenstein, the relation between them being seen in the view that absurd introduced by means of humor is a kind of vaccine that is supposed to protect us from forming absurdity in philosophy. In conclusion it is stated that Carroll\'s ideas that are the most significant for analytic philosophers are concerned with the nature of language that is not a transparent medium for him, but something that offers resistance when we communicate with others, as well as something that may be flexible and adjusted to our will. By manipulating language Carroll shows in what way philosophy balances between sense and nonsense and how often philosophical questions arise from erroneous use of language and erroneous posing of problems. This argument is an attempt to demonstrate that naturalism implies that none of our beliefs is based on reasoning — a “cardinal difficulty for naturalism,” since a belief in naturalism that was not based on (...) reasoning would be irrational. This article is an adaptation of the sixteenth Lewis A. Coser lecture, given virtually in 2021 for the American Sociological Association Meetings. In this article, I pay tribute to Lewis and Rose Laub Coser by engaging with their past work, which inspired a theoretical provocation about what it means to theorize from the margins. I specifically address the questions of who gets to be a theorist and what kinds of theoretical work get marginalized. I outline the process of (...) epistemic oppression involved in trying to publish marginal ideas in mainstream journals. I argue that the relationship between mainstream sociology and what I refer to as “marginal” requires a relational perspective that situates both marginalized scholars and their scholarship in the broader discipline of sociology and examines the epistemic oppression of their theories regardless of their sometimes-powerful institutional positioning in highly ranked departments or as leaders within various professional associations. Le Corpus oral et sonore de l’espagnol rural(COSER) est un corpus d’enquêtes orales qui a pour but l’étude de la grammaire dialectale dans la péninsule ibérique. Dans cet article, les caractéristiques du COSER et la méthodologie suivie sont décrites et comparées à celles des atlas pour ce qui concerne la recherche sur la grammaire dialectale. Grâce au COSER, de nombreux aspects syntaxiques peu connus ou totalement ignorés des dialectes espagnols ont pu être étudiés, tels que plusieurs paradigmes (...) pronominaux, la substitution du subjonctif et l’accord neutre de matière. De plus, la répartition géographique de ces aspects a parfois été considérablement élargie, et les explications traditionnelles ont été remplacées par de nouvelles, en se basant sur une meilleure connaissance des données. L’étude de la grammaire dialectale s’avère être une importante source d’information favorisant une meilleure compréhension des nombreux croisements des principes linguistiques, comme l’« Agreement Hierarchy », par exemple, et ouvrant la voie à de nouvelles approches permettant de tester leur validité. W bogatej literaturze poświęconej C.S. Lewisowi wskazuje się na trzy spotykane w jego publikacjach argumenty przeciwko naturalizmowi filozoficznemu. Są to argument z rozumu, argument z moralności oraz argument z Pragnienia (lub pragnienia transcendencji). Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że Lewis przedstawił także inne antynaturalistyczne rozumowanie odwołujące się do numinotycznej bojaźni, o której pisał Rudolf Otto. W tekście omawiam charakterystykę Pragnienia dokonaną przez Lewisa oraz spotykane w literaturze ujęcia Pragnienia, w których zestawia się je z doświadczeniem numinotycznym. Wykazuję, że Lewis charakteryzował (...) Pragnienie, pisząc o uczuciach rozkoszy, tęsknoty, smutku i niezaspokojenia, wskazywał na subiektywność tego doświadczenia, twierdził, że wywoływane jest ono przez rzeczy z tego świata oraz że ma ono charakter powszechny. Cechy te odróżniają je od doświadczenia numinotycznego. Odmiennie niż w doświadczeniu numinotycznym jest to też odczucie braku czegoś, a nie obecności Boga czy bóstwa. Na tej podstawie argumentuję, że wbrew popularnym ujęciom, Pragnienie, o którym pisał Lewis, różni się istotnie od doświadczenia numinotycznego, a przede wszystkim od doświadczenia numinotycznej bojaźni. Ponieważ Lewis odwoływał się do doświadczenia numinotycznego w swojej argumentacji przeciwko naturalizmowi, stąd można mówić o istnieniu czwartego antynaturalistycznego argumentu Lewisa – argumentu z numinotycznej bojaźni. The aim of the article is to investigate some of the possible sources of inspiration for Orwell’s concept of the artificial language called Newspeak, which, in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, is shown as an effective tool of enslavement and thought control in the hands of a totalitarian state. The author discusses, in this context, the putative links between Newspeak and really existing artificial languages, first of all Esperanto, and also between Orwell’s notion of “doublethink”, which is an important feature of (...) the totalitarian mentality, and Czesław Miłosz’s notion of “ketman”, developed in his book The Captive Mind. But the main emphasis is on the connection between Orwell’s book and the slightly earlier novel by C.S. Lewis, That Hideous Strength. It is well known that Orwell knew Lewis’s book and expressed his mixed feelings about it. There are many specific, though far from obvious, similarities between the two books, but what seems to have been particularly inspiring for Orwell was Lewis’s vision of a thoroughly degenerate language that is used for political manipulation rather than for communication. It is shown that Lewis’ ontological doctrine of Humean supervenience incorporates at its foundation the so-called separability principle of classical physics. In view of the systematic violation of the latter within quantum mechanics, the claim that contemporary physical science may posit non-supervenient relations beyond the spatiotemporal ones is reinforced on a foundational basis concerning constraints on the state representation of physical systems. Depending on the mode of assignment of states to quantum systems — unit state vectors versus statistical density operators (...) — we distinguish between strongly and weakly non-Humean, non-supervenient relations. It is demonstrated that in either case, the relations of quantum entanglement constitute prototypical examples of irreducible physical relations that do not supervene upon a spatiotemporal arrangement of Humean qualities, weakening, thereby, the thesis of Humean supervenience. In this respect, the status of Lewis’ recombination principle is examined, whereas his conception of lawhood is critically investigated. It is concluded that the assumption of ontological reductionism, as expressed in Lewis’ Humean doctrine, cannot be regarded as a reliable code of the nature of the physical world and its contents. It is proposed instead that due to the undeniable existence of non-supervenient relations, a metaphysic of relations of a moderate kind ought to be acknowledged as an indispensable part of our understanding of the natural world at a fundamental level. This paper aims to make explicit the methodological conditions that should be satisfied for the Bayesian model to be used as a normative model of human probability judgment. After noticing the lack of a clear definition of Bayesianism in the psychological literature and the lack of justification for using it, a classic definition of subjective Bayesianism is recalled, based on the following three criteria: an epistemic criterion, a static coherence criterion and a dynamic coherence criterion. Then it is shown that (...) the adoption of this framework has two kinds of implications. The first one regards the methodology of the experimental study of probability judgment. The Bayesian framework creates pragmatic constraints on the methodology that are linked to the interpretation of, and the belief in, the information presented, or referred to, by an experimenter in order for it to be the basis of a probability judgment by individual participants. It is shown that these constraints have not been satisfied in the past, and the question of whether they can be satisfied in principle is raised and answered negatively. The second kind of implications consists of two limitations in the scope of the Bayesian model. They regard (1) the background of revision (the Bayesian model considers only revising situations but not updating situations), and (2) the notorious case of the null priors. In both cases Lewis’ rule is an appropriate alternative to Bayes’ rule, but its use faces the same operational difficulties. (shrink)

Fictional truth is commonly analyzed in terms of the speech acts or propositional attitudes of a teller. In this paper, I investigate Lewis’s counterfactual analysis in terms of felicitous narrator assertion, Currie’s analysis in terms of fictional author belief, and Byrne’s analysis in terms of ideal author invitations to make-believe—and find them all lacking. I propose instead an analysis in terms of the revelations of an infelicitous narrator.

Focusing on his essays “New value‐free sociology” and “Remarks on social conflict today,” this chapter discusses Adorno's assessments of how Karl Mannheim, Georg Simmel, Lewis Coser, and Ralf Dahrendorf have addressed the tensions and conflicts that beset contemporary society. The chapter draws on these sociologists' works and on Adorno's reading of them to elucidate core arguments in his critique of both their conceptions of the social world and their sociological modes of procedure. Particular emphasis is placed on Adorno's notion (...) of the potential of a sociological approach that is more suitable for gaining insight into the antagonistic capitalist condition. The key components of such an approach, notably experience, its interplay with theory, and sociology's response to appearance, are further illuminated with reference to passages that illustrate their operations in sociological research. Straipsnyje nagrinėjami pagrindiniai modalizmo principai, remiantis šią teoriją plėtojusių Arthuro Prioro, Kito Fine’o ir Graeme’o Forbeso darbais. Tuomet aptariama tokių mąstytojų kaip Davidas Lewisas, kuris teigia, kad antireduktyvizmas modalumų atžvilgiu apskritai nelaikytinas teorine prieiga, bei Josephas Melia, kuris tvirtina, jog modalizmas implicitiškai mėgdžioja galimų pasaulių semantiką, kritika. Straipsnyje įrodinėjama, kad (...) formali modalizmo kalba grindžiama ne kuo kitu, kaip natūralia kalba, ir kad modalizmas nesiremia galimų pasaulių semantika. Be to, pabrėžiama, kad modalizmas siūlo intuityvesnį modalinių sąvokų supratimą, lyginant su galimų pasaulių semantika. (shrink)

The article concerns the definition of the problem field of a new type of modern terrorist activity in the information space under the conditions of globalization - information terrorism.The findings systematized, which are presented in the domestic social and political discourse and can serve as the basis for its further comprehensive research in the direction of building its corresponding model / concept. The research strategy of the well-known American methodologist L. Coser used for the analysis of elements of social (...) reality - the search for a set of interrelated indicators (variables) that can clarify the content, conditions for the emergence and development of this research subject.It substantiated that when constructing the problem field of the analysis of information terrorism as an element of social reality, such indicators can be: first, the interpretation of the very concept of «information terrorism»;secondly, the analysis of the causes and conditions of the spread of terrorist activity in the information space; thirdly, the classification of the main forms of manifestation of information terrorism; fourth, the analysis of the main technologies and methods of carrying out terrorist activities of an informational nature; fifth, substantiation of conditions and development of mechanisms against the wide spread of information terrorism in the modern world.The analysis of the essence of information terrorism from the standpoint of constructing an analytical (five-link) scheme for researching the problematic field of this type of terrorist activity provides a basis for generalizing and interpreting this new form of terrorism as the use of information and information infrastructure by certain (states, organizations, structures), on the one hand, for violence against people’s consciousness, manipulation of their behavior using certain methods and methods of influence, and on the other hand – to influence the information and technical structure of the state, with the aim of exerting pressure on the adoption of favorable decisions by states, groups of people or individuals by creating conditions for chaos, panic, etc. (shrink)

Cleve Staples Lewis w książce Cuda sformułował argument antynaturalistyczny, który nazwał kardynalną trudnością naturalizmu. Trudność ta ma polegać na tym, że jeśli przyjmiemy naturalizm z zasadą domknięcia kauzalnego, to wszystkie przekonania są faktami, których istnienie można w pełni wyjaśnić poprzez przeszły stan wszechświata oraz jego przemiany rządzone prawami fizyki. Naturalizm jest stanowiskiem, które składa się z przekonań i jeśli aspiruje do oceny bycia racjonalnym stanowiskiem, to powinien być przyjęty ze względu na rozumowanie. To jednak wydaje się być wykluczone ze względu (...) na naturalizm. Peter Van Inwagen w 2011 r. przedstawił krytykę argumentu Lewisa, sugerując, że opiera się on na nieuzasadnionym przekonaniu, że wyjaśnienia kauzalne jako takie oraz wyjaśnienia poprzez rozumowanie wykluczają się. Badam argumentacje obu autorów, dokładnie analizując argument Van Inwagena. Twierdzę, że: po pierwsze, nie uzasadnił on twierdzenia, że powyższe przekonanie przypisane Lewisowi jest faktycznie przesłanką jego rozumowania. Po drugie, przedstawiam na czym polega wytworzenie pewnego przekonania zarazem kauzalnie jak i poprzez rozumowanie. Po trzecie, analizuję tekst Lewisa, wykazując, że wspiera on możliwość spójności dwóch odmiennych rodzajów poprawnych wyjaśnień, ale argumentuję, że zasadniczą dla Lewisa jest teza, iż naturalizm nie pozostawia miejsca na wglądy będące elementem rozumowania i dlatego naturalizm wyklucza ową spójność. Po czwarte, badam przykład Phoebe podany przez Van Inwagena i konkluduję, że nie wystarcza on do stwierdzenia spójności obu typów wyjaśnień. Konkluduję, że artykuł Van Inwagena nie zawiera argumentu podważającego stanowisko Lewisa. (shrink)

Przekonania samolokalizujące stanowią problem dla popularnej koncepcji przekonań, wedle której przekonania są dwuargumentową relacją między podmiotem a sądem. Koncepcja ta nie potrafi wyjaśnić doniosłości poznawczej tych przekonań dla podmiotu, a co za tym idzie ich związku z zachowaniem. Wydaje się, że przekonania samolokalizujące nie są redukowalne do przekonań jednostkowych, ponieważ podmiot może mieć przekonanie jednostkowe na swój temat, nie mając odpowiedniego przekonania samolokalizującego. David Lewis, John Perry oraz Robert Stalanker zaproponowali różne rozwiązania tego problemu. Stalnaker – w przeciwieństwie do (...) class='Hi'>Lewisa i Perry’ego – broni tradycyjnej koncepcji przekonań. Propozycja Stalnakera opiera się na założeniu, że każdy rodzaj niewiedzy dotyczącej własnego usytuowania w świecie można przedstawić jako niewiedzę dotyczącą tego, który świat jest światem rzeczywistym. Zdaniem Clasa Webera, którego argumentację omawiam, strategia ta zawodzi. (shrink)

An objection is presented to Lewis’s analysis of counterfactual conditionals in terms of relative closeness of possible worlds. The objection depends on no special assumptions about the ‘closer-than’ relation. The argument also casts doubt on Lewis’s claim that Antecedent Strengthening fails for counterfactuals.

Podríamos iniciar estas líneas de acercamiento al problema, poliédrico y espejeante, que los autores aquí reunidos han sabido tratar acudiendo a la arquelogía de cierto vértigo de la conciencia sobre el que se constituye la subjetividad moderna. Para ello, cabría acudir al primer gran umbral de pérdida del equilibrio, para encontrarnos con la desfundamentación renacentista de la idea de cosmos. Nuestro relato, en tal caso, tendría su origen en la disolución del mundo en las cosas, de los universales en los (...) particulares, de la metafísica en la antropognosis. También sería posible alcanzar a Descartes –guiados quizás por Monsieur Teste y sus «excesos de conciencia de sí»– e instalarnos en los abismos fantasmagóricos de la pérdida de la evidencia inmediata (procurándose, perversamente, modernamente, la evidencia filosófica…). O detenernos en los surgimientos de la función imaginante según la define Kant en la Crítica del juicio en términos ya productivos, y continuar, si así lo quisiéramos, hacia aquel Salon de 1859 en el que Baudelaire atribuye a la imaginación la doble capacidad de descomponer lo recibido por la percepción, llenándose así la cultura europea de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX de fantasmas antiplatónicos; o sea, de imágenes soberanas con potencia para inquietarnos. Haciendo de este modo recuento de derrumbes (del Cosmos y de la Evidencia) y apariciones (la de una máquina de coser y un paraguas sobre una mesa de disección, los espectros mirados por Odilon Redon, las palabras absolutas de Mallármé), obtendríamos un itinerario preciso por el que determinar qué habríamos de entender con la expresión que da título a esta volumen: poéticas del extrañamiento. Simmel develops his concept of the stranger in an overly structural and reductionist manner. Contrary to Simmel’s suggestion, there is an indeterminate relation between structural exclusion and the attribution of strangeness. After showing that ‘the stranger’ must be rethought in a cultural-sociological way, this essay demonstrates an alternative approach. Articulating a ‘discourse’ that structures Western projections of strangeness, I explore its relation to colonialism, racial and class domination, and national conflict in modern Western history. This approach suggests an alternative, not (...) only to Simmel but to Merton’s and Coser’s earlier structural-functional reconceptualization of stranger theory. (shrink)

Partiendo de algunos estudios filológicos contemporáneos sobre el significado del nombre rapsoda, que recogen las interpretaciones más antiguas del mismo y llegan a vincularlo con el ardid, la trama y la artimaña, intentamos derivar la concepción de la poesía que Homero materializa en la Ilíada, lo que exige entonces decidir si el rapsoda es el aedo compositor o sólo el recitador de la obra consumada. Y el sentido de su acto de coser cantos o cantar con un cayado depende, (...) a su vez, de si la transmisión oral del poema equivale o no a la inexistencia de la composición escrita, y de si ésta es simple redacción y conservación o, antes bien, partitura esencial de la poesía.
