The paper surveys the currently available axiomatizations of common belief (CB) and common knowledge (CK) by means of modal propositional logics. (Throughout, knowledge- whether individual or common- is defined as true belief.) Section 1 introduces the formal method of axiomatization followed by epistemic logicians, especially the syntax-semantics distinction, and the notion of a soundness and completeness theorem. Section 2 explains the syntactical concepts, while briefly discussing their motivations. Two standard semantic constructions, Kripke structures and neighbourhood structures, are introduced in Sections (...) 3 and 4, respectively. It is recalled that Aumann's partitional model of CK is a particular case of a definition in terms of Kripke structures. The paper also restates the well-known fact that Kripke structures can be regarded as particular cases of neighbourhood structures. Section 3 reviews the soundness and completeness theorems proved w.r.t. the former structures by Fagin, Halpern, Moses and Vardi, as well as related results by Lismont. Section 4 reviews the corresponding theorems derived w.r.t. the latter structures by Lismont and Mongin. A general conclusion of the paper is that the axiomatization of CB does not require as strong systems of individual belief as was originally thought- only monotonicity has thusfar proved indispensable. Section 5 explains another consequence of general relevance: despite the "infinitary" nature of CB, the axiom systems of this paper admit of effective decision procedures, i.e., they are decidable in the logician's sense. The problem of Common Knowledge will be considered in two classes of models: a class K.* of Kripke models and a class S of Scott models. Two modal logic systems will be defined. Those systems, KC and MC, include an axiomatisation of Common Knowledge. We prove determination of each system by the corresponding class of models. MSC: 03B45, 68T25.

We show that several logics of common belief and common knowledge are not only complete, but also strongly complete, hence compact. These logics involve a weakened monotonicity axiom, and no other restriction on individual belief. The semantics is of the ordinary fixed-point type.

According to a popular version of the current evolutionary attitude in cognitive science, the mind is a massive aggregate of autonomous innate computational devices, each addressing specific adaptive problems. Our aim in this paper is to show that although this version of the attitude, which we call GOFEP , does not suffer from fatal flaws that would make it incoherent or otherwise conceptually inadequate, it will nevertheless prove unacceptable to most cognitive scientists today. To show this, we raise a common (...) objection to the concept of innateness, not to mount an attack on GOFEP but to study how its proponents have attempted to meet that challenge. The aim of this move is to show that GOFEP cannot face the challenge without, as it were, losing its soul. There is, or so we will argue, something deep at the heart of GOFEP that prevents its proponents from meeting the challenge. (shrink)

Standard equilibrium economic models focus on interdependencies. This text develops a theory which is based on disequilibria. The model proposed is a heuristic tool that makes it possible to explore these disequilibria in relation to Western economies.

The aim of J.-L. Marion’s article is to revisit the important debate on the place of Augustine in the history of metaphysics. Often, quibbles arise upon considering the use of substance (substantia) by Augustine, not only as approximative of essentia and as synonymous with ousia, but in deciding whether in so doing Augustine effectuates a ‘metaphysical turn’. While he elsewhere argues that Augustine is a pre-metaphysical thinker, in this article Marion focuses on showing the diverse range of usages of the (...) term substance in the Augustinian corpus. Marion observes: first, whenever substance seems a fixed definition, the term allows for equivocity; second, God is substance in an indeterminate sense or by negation; third, human beings are substances fundamentally to capture the mutability of human existence. As such, Marion concludes, the Augustinian use of substance is insufficient to inelude Augustine in the history of metaphysics. (shrink)

This essay traces the phenomenon of revelation beginning with the humblest, to the most personal, to the most exalted. Through this analysis, we discover several qualities of revelation: it reveals itself from itself, reveals a new world to me, and reveals another me to myself and to others. Turning to divine Revelation, a further set of concepts is uncovered: the witness who encounters a Revelation without understanding it, a resistance to the testimony of the witness, and a paradox that provokes (...) this resistance by exceeding expectations. These qualities make Revelation both more intelligible and meaningful. For, while holding an exceptional privilege, divine Revelation nonetheless remains in continuity with phenomenality in general and, in arriving from elsewhere by its own initiative, it opens my eyes to the unfolding of its unseen reserves. L'extrême barbarie de la seconde guerre mondiale, et l'espoir d'une vie différente pour l'humanité, ont amené M. Merleau-Ponty à réfléchir sur le marxisme - théorique d'une part, stalinien d'autre part. Notre projet consiste à suivre son cheminement intellectuel à cet égard depuis ses premiers écrits politiques de '45 jusqu'en I960, quelques mois à peine avant sa mort subite survenue il y a exactement trente ans, en mai 1961. Mais en quoi est-il pertinent, à l'heure où un vent d'Histoire plane sur (...) l'Est, de revenir sur des textes dont certains atteindront bientôt le demi-siècle ? C'est que l'auteur a vu clair avant presque tout le monde, de telle sorte qu'il réussit à identifier, inscrite dès l'origine dans son propre système, l'asphyxie inévitable du régime soviétique. Aussi, lire le Merleau-Ponty de ces années pas si lointaines, c'est lire à notre avis l'URSS de Gorbatchev et voir également s'épanouir la nouvelle Europe depuis Prague jusqu'à Sofia. C'est comprendre du même souffle - ce que n'eût point désavoué Marx - qu'on ne saurait bâillonner indéfiniment, enracinée dans le tissu de l'homme, la Volonté-de-liberté des peuples et des nations.The extreme barbarity of the Second World War, and the hope for a different life for Humanity, lead Merleau-Ponty to reflect on marxism, theoretical as well as Stalinian. Our aim is to follow his intellectual progress on this subject since his first political writing, from 1945 until I960, that is, just a few months before his sudden death in may 1961. However, where is the relevance to come back to these fifty years old texts when History blows on eastern countries? Simply because Merleau-Ponty has foreseen the present situation almost before any other analyst, in such a way that he identified successfully the unavoidable asphyxia of the soviet regimen, as inscribed at the very outset of this political system. To read the Merleau-Ponty of these years, it is, do we think, to read the USSR of Gorbatchev, and to see also the new Euro pa to expand, from Prague to Sofia. It is also to understand, by the same occasion - and Marx would not have disavowed it -, that one cannot silence indefinitely the Will of liberty of people and nations which is routed in the nature of man. La phénoménologie de tradition husserlienne y rencontrait les toutes jeunes sciences de la cognition en une confrontation exemplaire, où se croisaient les lignes directrices de ce qui allait constituer un nouveau domaine de recherche, à l’interface entre phénoménologie et sciences de la nature, un domaine dont l’émergence devait...

Le passé de l’Occident reste marqué par une tache indélébile, celle de l’horreur de l’esclavage colonial. Il est certes aujourd’hui avéré que la traite atlantique ne fut que l’une des traites négrières, à côté de la traite arabe au travers du Sahara et le long des côtes de l’océan Indien, qui s’étale sur une plus longue durée, et des traites africaines internes au continent... Mais en elle s’exprime un scandale spécifique, celui de la contradiction entre une pratique et des idéaux (...) proclamés, qui furent d’abord ceux d’une religion à vocation universaliste prônant l’amour du prochain, puis ceux issus des Lumières, dont l’application fut loin d’être immédiate. En outre, concentrée sur une période de temps plus brève – en gros trois siècles et demi, du début du XVIe au milieu du XIXe siècle –, la traite atlantique a alimenté en force de travail servile non pas des sociétés à esclaves, comme le furent les sociétés arabo-musulmanes, mais des sociétés esclavagistes, dont le caractère totalitaire résultait d’un mode de production tout entier fondé sur l’utilisation d’une main-d’œuvre dégradable autant que l’exigeaient les contraintes des cultures de plantation, vouées à la satisfaction de marchés extérieurs , et donc sur une marchandisation et une réification de l’homme sans précédent. Ce qui en fait un phénomène éminemment moderne, en contrariété avec les usages antiques ou non occidentaux, caractérisé par une racialisation de l’oppression, avec la mise en place d’un préjugé de couleur qui servit de légitimation commode, sous le couvert de la nature, à une forme d’exploitation qui aurait pu paraître condamnable en fonction des valeurs religieuses et politiques officiellement affichées.
