This article responds to a case-based argument by Mark Richard that rule of reference is not essential to meaning. It objects that the argument requires shifting between understanding the relevant term in the case, ‘marriage,’ as a determinable, in order to support one premise, and a determinate, in order to support another. On no univocal interpretation can both premises be made true.

Originally published in 1967. Ludwig Edelstein characterizes the idea of "progress" in Greek and Roman times. He analyzes the ancients' belief in "a tendency inherent in nature or in man to pass through a regular sequence of stages of development in past, present, and future, the latter stages being—with perhaps occasional retardations or minor regressions—superior to the earlier." Edelstein's contemporaries asserted that the Greeks and Romans were entirely ignorant of a belief in progress in this sense of the term. (...) In arguing against this dominant thesis, Edelstein draws from the conclusions of scholars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and discusses ideas of Auguste Comte and Wilhelm Dilthey. As Kant shows in A 71–76 of the First Critique, his table of the twelve “logical functions of understanding” (in A 70) is an indispensable extension of a table of four well-known logical functions that we find in a section of the Logic that was “already finished” in Aristotle’s times: The Square of Oppositions. The undisputed completeness of this special table thus warrants the completeness of Kant’s general table as well. Any further philosophical proof of completeness for Kant’s table of (...) judgements as a whole is therefore not necessary at all. And due to the contingency of “kind and number” of human forms of intuition and functions of judgment, such a ‘proof’ would not even be possible according to Kant – and thus it is not a subject (or even a part) of his Transcendental Deduction of the Categories. A concluding evaluation of Kant’s own statements about the proof-structure of the B-Deduction as a whole supports this claim. (shrink)

On constatera avec quelle étonnante profondeur Feuerbach annone et devance, à un titre ou un autre, par contraste ou parenté, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Husserl, certains thèmes de Heidegger, Barth et la théologie récente, etc. L'essence du christianisme est, aujourd'hui encore, un ouvrage scandaleux. Car il porte sur la religion chrétienne et divise les hommes. Il oblige à se prononcer sur ce qui est sans doute la question cruciale de la philosophie contemporaine : religieuse, OU pour une philosophie consciemment et rigoureusement antireligieuse. ". This chapter discusses about Ethics & adopts the explanation of the term which Prof. Moore has given in his book Principia Ethica. The author explains Ethics is the general enquiry into what is good. The chapter presents some phrases which will get a rough idea as to what it is that Ethics is concerned with. Ethics, so far as it springs from the desire to say something about the ultimate meaning of life, the absolute good, the absolute valuable can be (...) no science. What it says does not add to our knowledge in any sense. But it is a document of a tendency in the human mind which author personally cannot help respecting deeply. (shrink)

Ce volume rassemble deux textes qu'on associe traditionnellement depuis leur publication posthume conjointe. S'ils ont en commun d'appartenir à la période intermédiaire du travail de Wittgenstein, entre le Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1921) et les Investigations philosophiques (achevé en 1949), ainsi que d'avoir été dictés en anglais à des étudiants de Cambridge, ils n'ont cependant pas le même statut. Le Cahier bleu (dicté en 1934) est la première formulation complète de la seconde philosophie de Wittgenstein. Agé de quarante-cinq ans, le philosophe y (...) reprend à la lumière du " jeu du langage " l'ensemble des problèmes qui l'ont toujours préoccupé. Il montre en quoi cette notion permet d'échapper aux apories du sens, du solipsisme, et, plus généralement, de la métaphysique. Malgré certaines lacunes qu'on peut y déceler à la lecture rétrospective des Investigations, cet ouvrage se présente comme définitif. Wittgenstein le dicta d'ailleurs à ses élèves alors qu'il envisageait de quitter Cambridge pour s'installer en Union soviétique où il aurait voulu exercer un métier manuel. Quant au Cahier brun (dicté en 1935), il constitue sans équivoque le premier jet des Investigations philosophiques. Il ne s'agit plus seulement d'indiquer de manière générale les pouvoirs thérapeutiques des jeux de langage, mais d'en proposer une série concrète. A ce titre, Le Cahier brun se présente à la fois comme un manuel d'exercices philosophiques et comme une réflexion sur leur usage. Y sont examinés des problèmes aussi divers que la ressemblance, le suivi des règles, l'infini, etc. qui relèvent tous d'une attitude métaphysique dont Wittgenstein veut montrer la vanité. (shrink)

This five-volume German-English edition presents, for the first time, new translations of all of Wittgenstein's mature 1937-1944 writings on mathematics and logic. The first (1956) and third (1978) editions of Wittgenstein's Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics omitted, unsystematically, more than half of Wittgenstein's later writings on mathematics; for that reason, the reader will here read some entire manuscripts for the first time, and other manuscripts for the first time as unabridged, sustained pieces of writing. Philosophers and other interested readers (...) will gain fresh insight into Wittgenstein's perspectives on a wide range of topics, from Gödelian propositions and the Cantorian conception of real numbers to the nature of mathematical propositions and the diversity of proof techniques. Kirk Ludwig develops a novel reductive account of plural discourse about collective action and shared intention. Part I develops the event analysis of action sentences, provides an account of the content of individual intentions, and on that basis an analysis of individual intentional action. Part II shows how to extend the account to collective action, intentional and unintentional, and shared intention, expressed in sentences with plural subjects. On the account developed, collective action is a matter of there being multiple (...) agents of an event and it requires no group agents per se. Shared intention is a matter of agents in a group each intending that they bring about some end in accordance with a shared plan. Thus their participatory intentions differ from individual intentions not in their mode but in their content. Joint intentional action then is a matter of a group of individuals successfully executing a shared intention. (shrink)
