The second volume in an unprecedented publishing event: the complete College de France lectures of one of the most influential thinkers of the last century Michel Foucault remains among the towering intellectual figures of postmodern philosophy. His works on sexuality, madness, the prison, and medicine are classics his example continues to challenge and inspire. From 1971 until his death in 1984, Foucault gave public lectures at the world-famous College de France. These lectures were seminal events. The lectures comprising Abnormal begin by examining the role of psychiatry in modern criminal justice, and its method of categorizing individuals who "resemble their crime before they commit it." Building on the themes of societal self-defense in the first volume of this series, Foucault shows how and why defining "abnormality" and "normality" were prerogatives of power in the nineteenth century, shaping the institutions--from the prison system to the family--meant to deal in particular with “monstrosity,” whether sexual, phsyical, or spiritual. The College de France lectures add immeasurably to our appreciation of Foucault's thought, and offer a unique window on his singular worldview. (shrink)

This chapter introduces a novel account of fake news and explains how it differs from other definitions on the market. The account locates the fakeness of an alleged news report in two main aspects related to its production, namely that its creators do not think to have sufficient evidence in favor of what they divulge and they fail to display the appropriate attitude towards the truth of the information they share. A key feature of our analysis is that it does (...) not require that fake news must be circulated with the intention to deceive one’s audience. In this way, our account overcomes a potential limitation of the current philosophical discussion about fake news, which appears to individuate the main problem with this phenomenon in the fact that fake news consumers are misled and misinformed. In contrast, the proposed analysis shows that an additional (and perhaps equally fundamental) problem uncovered by the spread of fake news is a widespread pathological relationship with information, one on which we consume information not to satisfy our interest in the truth but to strengthen our social identities and quench our hunger for social recognition. Nous vivons dans un monde problématique, sans certitudes fixes. Désormais l’expérience est celle d’un flux héraclitéen. Nous sommes devenus des marins. Les intégristes voudraient jeter l’ancre en pleine tempête et les relativistes se laisser aller au fil du courant. La seule issue est d’apprivoiser le devenir dans un processus de problématisation, dont la démarche scientifique fournit le paradigme, processus qui articule doutes et certitudes sans remettre tout en question à chaque fois et qui permet des résultats provisoires certes mais suffisamment (...) assurés pour progresser. Il faut donc concevoir l’éducation comme problématisation. Ce qui implique de doter les jeunes de nouveaux types de repères : boussole et cartes avec lesquels ils pourront s’orienter eux-mêmes sur le fond d’un héritage, d’une expérience transmise. Une philosophie de l’éducation inspirée de la problématologie de John Dewey et de Michel Meyer, permet un autre regard sur l’évolution des normes éducatives, sur les schèmes qui les sous-tendent, sur le savoir et la culture scolaire, sur l’émancipation. This book is an English-language translation of a bestselling book in France that explores the relationship between humans and new technologies.

The author analyzes the transformation of norms and values in France and England during the preindustrial period (1500-1760). The relationship between religion and reason, the nature of popular fears, witchcraft, marriage, attitudes toward death, and persecution of confessional minorities are singled out for closer examination. The interplay between the two national traditions and the Catholic and Protestant ways remains under constant focus. The new norms and models for behavior that arose in each country in this period, besides being different, were (...) also articulated, communicated, and enforced differently, even though there is a broad family resemblance between the changes in France and in England that led to modernization. It is argued that the general concepts used in comparative religious ethics should always be suspect and may be of questionable applicability outside the historical wholes which gave them birth. To enhance the applicability of these concepts, it is proposed that the work adopt the more limited ambition of comparing cultural wholes that are geographically close and culturally permeable. Minha intenção não era lidar com o problema da verdade, mas com o problema de dizer a verdade ou do que diz a verdade como uma atividade. Com isso quero dizer que, para mim, não era uma questão de analisar os critérios internos ou externos que possam permitir a gregos e romanos, ou a qualquer outro povo, reconhecer se uma declaração ou proposição é verdadeira ou não. A questão para (...) mim foi, outrossim, a tentativa de considerar dizer a verdade como uma atividade específica ou como um papel. Mas, mesmo no âmbito dessa questão geral do papel do narrador da verdade. (shrink)

L'Observatoire de la Formation, de l'Emploi et des Métiers de la CCIP a rédigé un rapport en juin 2003 sur les pratiques linguistiques des entreprises françaises exerçant une activité internationale, afin de mesurer les impacts de la mondialisation des échanges sur l'usage de la langue française au sein de ces entreprises. Il ressort de cette analyse que les entreprises interrogées ne ressentent pas de barrière linguistique forte dans le développement de leurs activités à l'international. Si l'anglais est considéré comme un (...) avantage concurrentiel fort, les incitant à former leurs collaborateurs à son usage, le français conserve toute sa place dans la communication interne et les relations commerciales avec la clientèle francophone. Par ailleurs, le français est considéré comme un élément indissociable de l'image de marque des entreprises sans toutefois être vu comme un avantage sur le marché. Aussi, il est nécessaire de mettre en place une politique d'incitation à l'usage du français en tant qu'avantage concurrentiel indissociable d'une politique marketing afin de garantir son maintien comme langue des affaires au sein même des entreprises francophones. Une telle politique les inciterait à se regrouper en tant que réseau d'entreprises partageant une spécificité culturelle liée à l'emploi majoritaire d'une même langue: le français.A study concerning the linguistic practices of French companies with international business activity was drafted in June 2003, by the "Observatoire de la Formation, de l'Emploi et des Métiers " at the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The purpose of this report was to analyse the effect globalization has on those practices, especially regarding the use of French. The report shows clearly that these companies do not suffer from linguistic barriers in the expansion of their international business activity. If the use of English seems to be a competitive advantage in international markets, prompting those companies to provide English training for their employees, French holds its position when it comes to internal communication and business relationships with French-speaking customers. Moreover, French is considered as an essential part of their brand image without however being considered a commercial advantage. Therefore, it is necessary to urge these companies to develop their use of French as a competitive advantage closely linked to their marketing policy and thus to maintain French as a business language used by Francophone companies. Such campaign would permit the emergence of a network of companies, all sharing the same cultural specificity linked to the use of the same language: French. (shrink)

In this paper, I criticize Putnam’s argument, which contends that scientific realism implies adherence to a God’s eye point of view. I also show that some sort of God’s eye point of view in a weak sense, i.e. interest-free, is indeed accessible to humans and that a moderate version of scientific realism is philosophically defensible.

The mechanisms by which bacteria adapt to changes in their environment involve transcriptional regulation in which a transcriptional regulator responds to signal(s) from the environment and regulates (positively or negatively) the expression of several genes or operons. Some of these regulators exert a positive feedback on their own expression. This is a necessary (although not sufficient) condition for the occurrence of multistationarity. One biological consequence of multistationarity may be epigenetic modifications, a hypothesis unusual to microbiologists, in spite of some well-known (...) epigenetic modifications in bacteria. We propose here that the occurrence of mucoidy in the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is currently attributed to mutations only, may also be an epigenetic modification. A theoretical approach using a generalised logical analysis lends credit to this hypothesis and suggests experiments to ascertain it. (shrink)

Les sciences de la nature construisent des symboles spécifiques pour saisir adéquatement la réalité de la nature. La puissance de leurs symboles est telle que la pensée scientifique déborde ce réel, l’anticipe, le reconstruit et finalement le réalise et le prolonge sur le plan technique. Mais quel est le point de départ de la symbolisation scientifique? Comment peut-elle, couplée à la technique, réaliser la réalité même de la nature? Enfin, le langage spécifique des sciences de la nature peut-il s’autonomiser par (...) rapport aux langues « naturelles », relatives à des groupes humains et parlées spontanément? L’enjeu consiste à montrer, tout à la fois, les limites et la puissance des symboles des sciences de la nature que sont la physique et la chimie. (shrink)

This book is about Karl Popper's early writings before he began his career as a philosopher. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate that Popper's philosophy of science, with its emphasis on the method of trial and error, is largely based on the psychology of Otto Selz, whose theory of problem solving and scientific discovery laid the foundation for much of contemporary cognitive psychology. By arguing that Popper's famous defence of the method of falsification as well as his elaboration (...) of an evolutionary theory of knowledge are equally indebted to German psychology, Michel ter Hark challenges the received view of the development of Popper's philosophy. The book concludes with a reinterpretation of Popper's theory of the mind-body problem, emphasizing its contemporary relevance. (shrink)

Philosophe français spécialiste de logique, Edmond Goblot (1858-1935) est avant tout connu pour un essai de sociologie décapant, La Barrière et le Niveau (1925), qui pose pour la première fois les fondements d'une théorie de la distinction sociale. Délaissant l'analyse matérialiste des classes au profit d'une perspective culturelle originale, Goblot décrypte sans complaisance les moeurs de la bourgeoisie française, monde qu'il connaît d'autant mieux qu'il en est lui-même issu. Condisciple d'Henri Bergson et d'Emile Durkheim à l'Ecole normale supérieure, Goblot ne (...) bénéficiera pas de la même aura que ses deux anciens camarades. L'histoire de leurs relations, et plus généralement de Goblot avec ses collègues philosophes de la IIIe République, n'en constitue pas moins un prisme original pour comprendre les transformations d'une activité, la philosophie, alors en pleine mutation. Portrait sociologique d'un professeur ordinaire, cet ouvrage opte pour un double parti pris. Il met d'abord en évidence les entrelacs entre trajectoire sociale et choix intellectuels, y compris dans un domaine aussi aride que la logique. Il montre ensuite que La Barrière et le Niveau n'est pas un accident de parcours intellectuel mais l'application au monde social des thèses originales défendues en logique par Goblot. L'ouvrage propose en ce sens une nouvelle interprétation de ce grand classique des sciences sociales qu'est devenu La Barrière et le Niveau. (shrink)

Professionalization of the engineer, from the perspective of sociology of technology, registrant in the statements of principle and Canadian standards of accreditation of university engineering programs. The question of the development of technologies (production, dissemination and appropriation) is attached in all respects with personal and social qualities of which refer engineer schools of engineering and regulatory bodies. As I am not at all a specialist on Gottlob Frege’s work, my comments intended initially to be focused on an aspect that emerges in the last part of Peter Clark’s paper “Frege, neo-logicism and applied mathematics” 1, where he treats the question of “applied mathematics” — an aspect that appealed to me and that was triggered by Frege’s relationship between numbers and concepts, and reasoning. Starting with this concern, I have been led by my subject to propose some considerations (...) about foundations and rationality which will go — briefly — in two directions. The first direction is that of a distinction between logical and rational foundations, whilst the second direction is that of taking into account as a fact the historical development of mathematics among the sciences, which modifies the terms of any foundational program. In delineating these considerations, I found that what I had in mind could apply to mathematics itself as well as to “applied mathematics”, thus deviating somewhat from my first explicit intention. In conclusion I shall consider the possibility of a rational foundation programme for mathematical and physico-mathematical sciences which would take into account the changes in the scientific contents and the widenings of the forms of rationality that, in my view, make these changes possible. Such foundations for knowledge would not be any more static, but dynamical and would be possibly considered only retrospectively: they would be “forward foundations”, in a sense that will be discussed in detail elsewhere. On connaît le fabuleux destin du petit traité aristotélicien auquel la tradition a donné le titre de Catégories. Écrit dans un style didactique, on n'y trouve pas d'indication d'un projet philosophique, ni de discussion (explicite en tout cas) avec d'autres auteurs, qui puisse permettre d'esquisser un horizon philosophique, ni même de référence aux autres ouvrages du Corpus qui puisse nous éclairer sur son but. Cependant, deux gestes de lecteurs ultérieurs ont fait de ce texte en tous points...
