The objective proposed in this article is to investigate teachers’ beliefs about their role in developing their students’ literacy, through the appraisal system. This work is part of the dissertation entitled “Beliefs of teachers in the early years of elementary school about their role in the development of literacy”, in progress within the scope of the Academic Master’s Degree in Teaching Humanities and Languages (MEHL), at the Franciscan University (UFN) and the umbrella project “Multiliteracies and discourses”. The concept of beliefs (...) in this article is based on the conception of Bourdieu (2018), which understands beliefs as discursive productions, which are constructed in the interaction between subjects. For this text, the basis is only the interview carried out with a 5th year elementary school teacher. This teacher’s beliefs were analyzed based on the appraisal system. The interview analyzed demonstrated that, in terms of evaluation, the teacher uses more linguistic resources that refer to appreciation, followed by resources of affection and judgment, respectively. In relation to beliefs, they are related to students’ difficulties in relation to learning, the lack of students responsibles’ commitment and the students themselves to learning, in general, and the need to involve students’ prior knowledge to promoting literacy. Cet article met en lumière une forme particulière de pouvoir dans le processus de colonisation de l’Amérique du Sud. Les expéditions des bandeirantes se distinguaient du pouvoir pastoral des missions jésuites ainsi que de l’exploitation minière ou de l’occupation territoriale en établissant un régime de chasse dont les cibles principales étaient les peuples indigènes. Ce régime servait de contrepoids au pouvoir souverain et à l’humanisme occidental. Aujourd’hui, la dimension technologique de la biopolitique donne lieu à une sémiotique de la chasse (...) The sensible and conflicting scenario of the pandemic postulated many challenges to societies around the world in 2020. Part of this problem refers to how the differences between politics and science are not comprehended in their particularities. The recognition of limits and power of science and politics can not only contribute to reaching the actions and strategies facing novel coronavirus but also optimized many domains of society.

Die Erfahrung des Lebens innerhalb vielfältiger, oft miteinander konfligie-render Sinnzusammenhänge, wird in diesem Denken zum Ausdruck ge-bracht. Die Forschung Paul Mendes-Flohrs widmet sich der Philosophie, der Literatur und der Kulturgeschichte des deutschen Judentums unter die-sem Aspekt. In diesem Sammelband sind Beiträge enthalten, die das deutsch-jüdische Denken und damit verwandte Themen als Prisma der Moderne betrachten.

As neuroscience methods begin to dominate emotion research it is critical for researchers to remember that peripheral embodiments are critical to understanding emotional experience and emotion—behavior links. Much of modern emotion research assumes reliable mind—body connections that suggest that changes in emotional states influence bodily responses and, vice versa, that somatovisceral information shapes emotional experiences. However, there may be important qualifications to the link between the mind and the (peripheral) body. For example, the ability to sense internal and external bodily (...) states declines in older age as does activation of physiological systems, all of which may contribute to an impairment in emotional experiences and how emotions influence behavior. I describe this phenomenon as maturational dualism and suggest implications of this for emotion in older adults. (shrink)

A critical evaluation of Martin Buber's work and its diverse aspects of modern thought and culture.

Noting that one may hear without listening, the article probes the phenomenological and epistemic distinction between hearing and listening. To listen is to be attuned to voices muffled by silence or camouflaged by a defensive rhetoric resonant with a voice inflected by festering wounds, existential and political. In exploring how one is to listen to these voices of silence, I draw upon Martin Buber’s concept of dialogical “inclusion” of others’ stories, to listen without interpretation to allow the voice behind his (...) – or her or their – story, be it merely etched viscerally in the language of silence, to dwell aside one’s own story in a dialogue unencumbered by perceptions of the Other forged by cultural, social, political constructs, and perhaps most insidiously one’s own defensive postures. Apresenta-se uma análise fílmica do videodocumentário Roda o Tererê com vistas a investigar se e como o filme dirigido pela cineasta brasileira Lilian Solá Santiago contribui para uma descolonização do olhar, da estética e da política das imagens. Interessa identificar até que ponto o videodocumentário tensiona o regime de visibilidade dominante na sociedade nacional problematizado por teóricos localizados fora do eixo cultural da Europa (GONZALEZ, 2011; BORGES, 2018; NASCIMENTO, 2016). Conclui-se que, ao inscrever-se enquanto cineasta, Lilian Santiago não transforma a (...) sua câmera apenas em voz; transforma o microfone em ouvido, e faz dele uma caixa de ressonância para que as pessoas ouçam e vejam aqueles que vem sendo historicamente apagados dos espaços do aparecer. The aim of this paper is to clarify the truth-functional interpretation of the logical connective of the material implication. The importance of such clarification lies in the fact that it allows avoiding the supposed paradoxes introduced by C. I. Lewis (1918). I argue that an adequate understanding of the history and purposes of logic is enough to dissolve them away. The defense is based on an exposition of propositional compositionalism. To compare, I also present Stalnaker’s (1968) alternative that seeks to (...) explain the implicit concept of conditionality of conditionals assertions. In order to reinforce my aim I expound the twelve different meanings of ‘implication’ stated by Corcoran (1993) in order to hold that a proper understanding of these meanings allows us to avoid ambiguities and confusions. Finally, I expect to show that despite the possible alternatives, compositionalism is still the best explanation for the truth-functionality account of logical connectives. (shrink)

A pesquisa pretende fazer uma narrativa, à luz da teoria de Jacques-Alain Miller, sobre o sujeito em dialética com as formas jurídicas do trabalho. Considerando a dinâmica social transpassada pela mercantilização, buscou-se uma elucidação sobre a formação e relação do sujeito com a linguagem e o ’Outro’, não concebida no entendimento do sujeito de direito tradicional. Como resultado, notou-se que a desconsideração da subjetivação do trabalhador é uma lacuna no mundo jurídico, que viabiliza sua reiterada sujeição e descaracteriza a proteção (...) ao seu trabalho. At first, it must be said that the existence of God is the great affirmation presupposed by the Bible. The Bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God, it simply takes this existence as a fact. The great Reformed theologian Louis Berkhof says: "For us the existence of God is the great presupposition of theology." In fact, no theologian could deny the existence of God, as this automatically would cause him to be without profession. But throughout history, philosophers (...) and theologians have debated whether the human mind can be sure of God's existence. Does the existence of God is a matter that must be accepted by faith itself? Or is it possible, from reason and rational arguments to prove the existence of God? (shrink)

Understanding cultural evolution is one of the most challenging and indispensable scientific tasks for the survival of humankind on our planet. This task demands, besides an adoption of theories and models from biological evolution, theories for culture-specific processes as well. Language evolution and language acquisition offer interesting objects of study in this respect. (Published Online November 9 2006).

Las puertas de las cárceles no fueron, son o serán las únicas que definan el proceso de custodia de las mujeres negras dentro y fuera de las cárceles. Como en todos los aspectos de la vida social, política y económica, la experiencia de la cárcel no puede pensarse desde una perspectiva general y aislada de sus lazos con un sistema histórico de opresión. O sea, a partir de la idea, aparente o subliminal, de que allí se encuentran personas definidas como (...) "mujeres", cuya raza, condición social y sexualidad tienen poco o nada que ver en sus experiencias de vida hasta ese momento o a partir de entonces, ya sea dentro o fuera de los muros custodiados. En este sentido, tomando como referencia teórica una epistemología jurídica feminista, interseccional y decolonial, el objetivo de este texto es reflexionar sobre lo que ha sido el sistema de justicia penal brasileño en las últimas décadas, a partir de lo que Brasil siempre fue, a lo largo de los siglos, para las mujeres negras. Embora influente na recepção de Heidegger nos Estados Unidos da América, o trabalho de Dreyfus foi repetidas vezes criticado por desenvolver uma leitura distorcida e seletiva da fenomenologia de Heidegger. Nesse artigo, mostramos que, independentemente de seus desenvolvimentos posteriores em ciência cognitiva, sua crítica inicial à IA simbólica se apoia em duas teses que podem ser localizadas em Ser e Tempo, a saber, de que nosso senso de situação é pragmático-holístico, e intrinsecamente relevante. Após uma introdução geral, reconstruímos, numa primeira (...) seção, em linhas gerais o projeto da IA simbólica e o tom geral da crítica de Dreyfus; numa segunda seção, reconstruímos a crítica de Dreyfus a SAM, de R. Schank; na terceira seção, indicamos como as duas teses podem ser localizadas em Ser e Tempo; concluímos apontando questões pendentes. (shrink)

Em seus Discursos sobre a primeira década de Tito Lívio, Maquiavel discorre sobre as histórias de Roma na busca do sentido da ação, do saber da política entremeado à prática dos antigos. No proêmio ao primeiro livro e no proêmio ao segundo, o florentino tece algumas considerações a respeito das histórias e de como os modernos as apreendem, o que, para ele, se configura como um problema. Com efeito, para Maquiavel, o acesso ao passado não é imediato, seja pela leitura (...) das histórias que busca apenas o deleite, e não o saber delas, seja pelo relato situado dos escritores, que retratam parcialmente as coisas antigas, seja ainda pela nostalgia que os idosos possuem de seus tempos de juventude, os quais eles consideram superiores à velhice, quando já não tem tantas forças. Assim, a relação entre passado e presente se torna problemática, pois os tempos antigos aparecem aos modernos como um passado glorioso, porém inatingível, irremediavelmente perdido e, portanto, em descompasso com o presente corrompido. Nossa proposta, então, é retomar o proêmio ao primeiro livro e o proêmio ao segundo livro dos Discorsi para investigar a relação entre presente e passado, e como Maquiavel elabora essa tensão por meio de uma noção de história que possibilita um saber da política comum a antigos e modernos, logo, uma noção de história que revele o fio de sentido comum que os atravessa no movimento histórico. Spatial planning policies are fundamental blocks for the implementation of sustainable development goals. Still, despite the growing adoption of environmental proxies, as it is nature-based solutions, the study of their institutionalization in policy and spatial planning is in the early stages. Simultaneously, the use of discursive and interpretative methods to unfold the social structures related to environmental issues is growing, nonetheless, their application is more common to supranational narratives. This article proposes a conceptual and methodological approach to using critical discourse (...) analysis for studying the institutionalization and conceptualization of nature-related issues in policy and spatial planning at national and local levels. This is done by discussing the ontological relations between the discursive institutionalist theory and critical discourse analysis as a methodology. It contains four main stages: clarifying the analytical focus; mapping policy and planning documents; analyzing macro discourse, which includes critical textual analysis, text-type analysis, and intertextuality analysis, and, at last, the fourth phase, interpretation within the institutional context. It provides a tool for researchers less familiar with linguistics but interested in performing discourse analysis to understand the integration of environmental narratives within policy and spatial planning. This article develops a conceptual pattern of the reasons and scope of business responsibility for modern slavery. It introduces modern slavery as either relation or structure and designs an understanding of a broad and a narrow model of business responsibility, consisting of business power, internal and external realms of business conduct and public and private roles of companies. Crossing the two models of modern slavery with the two models of business responsibility, the article carves out the strengths and limits of (...) their junctions. The continuous pendulum between the junctions allows to discuss how and why companies can be responsible for modern slavery. It thus contributes analytically, practically and normatively to tackling modern slavery. (shrink)

Resumo Neste estudo o autor procura analisar a compreensão da natureza humana que está subjacente às palavras de Aquiles, na Ilíada, IX,318-320 e na Odisseia, XI,489-491. Segundo o autor, Aquiles é portador de uma interpretação da condição humana que traduz uma determinada compreensão do que significa ser humano. De modo a deixar ver a compreensão da natureza humana presente nas palavras de Aquiles, o autor recorre a indícios encontrados noutros pontos das obras homéricas referidas, relacionando as concepções presentes nos dois (...) textos alvo. Identifica-se ainda a descrição da natureza humana que é possível fazer a partir das situações que envolvem os versos em análise. Assim, por um lado procura-se identificar que compreensão da natureza humana está presente no discurso de Aquiles e, por outro, que natureza humana emerge das alterações que o seu discurso sofre. Na Ilíada o autor encontra indícios de uma compreensão afetada pela ira, envolvendo o mundo humano numa aura de melancolia, na qual predomina o reconhecimento da injustiça por toda a parte. Da Odisseia obtém-se uma avaliação da vida que considera qualquer forma de existência humana preferível a qualquer forma de morte. Finalmente, o artigo explora o modo como a sua interpretação acerca da vida é modulada pelas mudanças que de cada vez se abatem sobre ele. According to the author, Achilles bears an interpretation of the human condition that reflects a certain understanding of what it means to be human. In order to bring to light the understanding of human nature present in the words of Achilles, the verses listed are analysed, using evidences found elsewhere in the Homeric works mentioned, and relating the concepts present in the two target texts. A diagnosis is made in order to identify the description of human nature that is presented by the situations involving the poetic subject. In short, the author seeks to identify which understanding of human nature is present in the speech of Achilles, and what is the concept of human nature that emerges from the changes happening through the verses. Thus, in the Iliad the author finds evidences of an understanding affected by anger, involving the human world in a wave of melancholy in which the recognition of injustice predominates. And in Odyssey the article finds an evaluation of life that sustains that any form of human existence is preferable when compared with death – compared with death, life is better. The article explores in particular the idea that Achilles’ interpretation of life is modulated by the changes he suffers in his life. Um dos movimentos sociais antimetropolitanos de maior pluralidade social ao longo do período colonial, a Conjuração Baiana de 1798 caracterizou-se pela diversidade de concepções em torno das ideias de Liberdade e Igualdade. A abordagem do movimento aponta para a eficácia com que as elites coloniais canalizaram as contradições internas à sociedade baiana na direção de um antagonismo que colocava as causas de todos os males no domínio português. Analisando documentos elaborados ou difundidos pelos participantes - tais como as Décimas à (...) Liberdade e Igualdade e os denominados “Pasquins Sediciosos”-, ou mesmo o material produzido pela repressão metropolitana – fundamentalmente os “Autos de Devassa” -, busco mapear as diferentes concepções de Liberdade e Igualdade apresentadas pelos partícipes da Conjura em fins do século XVIII no espaço colonial. Modern slavery is a major topic of concern in international law and global governance, in civil society, and in academic debates. Yet, what does modern slavery mean, and can its highly different forms be covered in a single concept? This paper discusses these questions in three steps: First, it develops common definitions of modern slavery. Second, it discusses critical rejections of these definitions. The two camps that adhere to the definitions of modern slavery, and that reject them, respectively, face certain (...) limits. In a third step, the paper takes up with the limits and the strengths of both. It suggests that the limits of definitions of modern slavery can be overcome by critical approaches; and that the limits of critical approaches can be overcome by definitions of modern slavery. The key is their integration into a human rights frame. Ultimately, the paper proposes an approach to modern slavery that neither relies on a binary distinction between slavery and non-slavery, nor does it strive for the abolishment of the concept of modern slavery. Rather, the paper calls for a normatively and contextually embedded approach within the human rights frame. (shrink)

Cellular identity and its response to external or internal signalling variations are encoded in a cell's genome as regulatory information. The genomic regions that specify this type of information are highly variable and degenerated in their sequence determinants, as it is becoming increasingly evident through the application of genome‐scale methods to study gene expression. Here, we speculate that the same scenario applies to the regulatory regions controlling where DNA replication starts in the metazoan genome. We propose that replication origins cannot (...) be defined as unique genomic features, but rather that DNA synthesis initiates opportunistically from accessible DNA sites, making cells highly robust and adaptable to environmental or developmental changes. The article traces the evolution and crystallization of Buber’s philosophy of dialogue. It focuses on his consideration of the epistemological and ontological issues attendant to the principium individuationis, the subject of his doctoral dissertation of 1904. Culminating with the publication of Ich und Du in 1923, this process was punctuated by life experiences that led him to affirm rather than to seek to transcend the principium individuationis as the ontological ground of being manifest in the matrix of everyday life, which (...) we are beckoned to sanctify through I-Thou relations. Neste artigo, pretendo analisar alguns pontos centrais que culminam no amadurecimento da reflexão de Arendt em relação ao pensamento de Marx e ao marxismo. Para tanto, será analisado a leitura de Arendt a partir dos excertos presentes em Karl Marx and the Tradition of Western Political Thought, escrito no início da década de 1950, texto que é uma espécie de complementação do The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) e fazia parte de um projeto pensado por Arendt de escrever um livro sobre (...) os “elementos totalitários do marxismo”. Visto que esse escrito nunca foi finalizado e o esse projeto foi abandonado, considero que a análise desse texto além de esclarecer muitos pontos importantes da crítica de Arendt a Marx e ao marxismo, pode nos servir também de ponte para o seu Magnum Opus The Human Condition (1958). A minha hipótese é de que, na visão de Arendt, a ruptura presente no pensamento de Marx em relação a tradição da filosofia política acontece com base em um tipo de linguagem que é resultado da própria tradição. Portanto, os resultados práticos do pensamento marxiano e dos marxismos seriam consequência da tradição do pensamento político ocidental quando convertido numa práxis radical. (shrink)

The aim of this study is to show that the reopening of the “quarrel between the ancients and the moderns” proposed by Strauss is an invitation to rethink the format of social science of his time. In his interpretation, the triumph of positivism and historicism in the contemporary era directly influenced the consolidation of a kind of social science that was too technical and scientistic, far from its main object of research, the human life in society. As a result, it (...) was established a nihilistic social science, attached to methods and a theorizing vocabulary, incapable of dealing with the complexity of the human world. I intend to show, based on the criticism elaborated by Professor Strauss, which alternatives are presented to rescue social science through the revival of specific elements of classical political science. O conflito entre povo e grandes é central na obra de Maquiavel, pois a dinâmica conflitiva entre o desejo do povo, de não ser dominado, e dos grandes, de dominar, ordena o corpo social pela instituição de leis e ordenações. Nessa desunião, Maquiavel reconhece que o desejo do povo é mais confiável e conforme a liberdade, visto que ele recusa a dominação dos grandes e, portanto, não permite que a liberdade seja usurpada. Entretanto, embora o florentino assinale o vínculo entre (...) o desejo do povo e a liberdade, ele não esclarece como o povo produz leis e ordenações em favor da vida livre. Assim, para compreender como a ação do povo reordena o corpo social segundo seu desejo, investigaremos a dinâmica desse humor em seu conflito com os grandes, nos capítulos 4 e 5 do primeiro livro dos Discursos sobre a primeira década de Tito Lívio de Maquiavel, e em seguida nos dirigiremos ao capítulo 40 do primeiro livro dessa obra, pois nesse momento Maquiavel discorre sobre uma reordenação de Roma que opôs a plebe e os nobres para compreender a ação extraordinária do povo e de seu desejo em sua dinâmica com o desejo dos grandes. Nossa proposta, portanto, é mostrar como o povo reordena a cidade no sentido de uma experiência democrática segundo seu desejo de não ser dominado. (shrink)

ExcerptA series of recent works have explored Hans Blumenberg's metaphorology in its relation to anthropology and the hermeneutics of the lifeworld.1 In what follows, I would like to foreground another aspect of his work by describing the metaphorology and the earlier works on the history of philosophy as works of discourse analysis. From such a perspective, linguistic forms appear less as the expression of anthropological and lifeworld circumstances than as the continuation and transformation of intra-discursive, historical-systematic decisions. Nas últimas décadas houve o aumento da produção de materiais didáticos destinados ao ensino de filosofia no Brasil. Um dos responsáveis por esse aumento é a oferta de livros didáticos de Filosofia pelo Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD), a partir de 2012. Diante dessa realidade, esse estudo tem por objetivos identificar nos livros didáticos de Filosofia aprovados pelo PNLD filosofias latino-americanas, analisar as representações dos cenários, paisagens e povos latino-americanos nas figuras e imagens desses livros didáticos e refletir sobre (...) as ausências e presenças de filosofias e filósofos não europeus nos livros didáticos de Filosofia distribuídos pelo PNLD. Como problema central, coloca-se a seguinte questão: Qual a relevância dada ao pensamento filosófico latino-americano ou brasileiro nos livros didáticos de Filosofia distribuídos pelo PNLD 2012, 2015 e 2018? Quanto metodologia será realizada uma pesquisa exploratória dos materiais didáticos. Assim, recorreu-se ao referencial teórico de Aníbal Quijano (2005), Roberto Gomes (1994) e Silveira (2020). Portanto, sem esgotar a complexidade dessa temática, foi considerado à guisa de conclusão que os livros didáticos de Filosofia adquiridos e distribuídos pelo PNLD 2012, 2015 e 2018, não contemplam uma abordagem decolonial e, mesmo assim,contribuem para uma introdução aos estudos filosóficos gerais.
