    On Humanism.Richard Norman - 2004 - Routledge.
humanism /'hju:menizm/ n. an outlook or system of thought concerned with human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Albert Einstein, Isaac Asimov, E.M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, and Gloria Steinem all declared themselves humanists. What is humanism and why does it matter? Is there any doctrine every humanist must hold? If it rejects religion, what does it offer in its place? Have the twentieth century's crimes against humanity spelled the end for humanism? On Humanism is a timely and powerfully argued philosophical (...)

Law, seduction, and the sentimental heroine: The case of Amelia Norman.John T. Parry & Andrea L. Hibbard - manuscript
This article examines the notorious mid-nineteenth-century American trial of Amelia Norman, who was acquitted - very much against the weight of the evidence - of attempting to kill the man who seduced her. In particular, we explore the role in the trial and its aftermath of the affective energies and cultural expectations set in motion by best-selling American sentimental novels like Hannah Foster's "The Coquette" and Susanna Rowson's "Charlotte Temple." In Norman's case, once newspapers, defense lawyers, and reformers (...)

    Replies to my Critics.Graham Bird - 2011 - Kantian Review 16 (2):257-282.
The interpretation of Kant's Critical philosophy as a version of traditional idealism has a long history. In spite of Kant's and his commentators’ various attempts to distinguish between traditional and transcendental idealism, his philosophy continues to be construed as committed (whether explicitly or implicitly and whether consistently or inconsistently) to various features usually associated with the traditional idealist project. As a result, most often, the accusation is that his Critical philosophy makes too strong metaphysical and epistemological claims. In hisThe Revolutionary Kant, (...)

Ross & Spurrett (R&S) argue that Kim's reductionism rests on a restricted account of supervenience and a misunderstanding about causality. I contend that broadening supervenience does nothing to avoid Kim's argument and that it is difficult to see how employing different notions of causality helps to avoid the problem. I end by sketching a different solution.

The groundwork of Christian ethics.Norman Hamilton Galloway Robinson - 1971 - Grand Rapids, Mich.,: Eerdmans.
"Many theologians, as well as many philosophers, may be heard today asserting that there neither is nor can be any such thing as a uniquely Christian ethical system. On the one hand it is argued that an ethic based on revelation must be inherently static, unable to respond to new demands and situations; but if the ethical code is little more than a refinement of so-called natural law or natural morality, then there is no reason to term it Christian. In (...)

    In Lessing's Footsteps: An Amerikanische Dramaturgie for the Twenty-First Century.Norman Roessler - 2008 - The European Legacy 13 (3):307-315.
In this essay, the author follows the dramaturgical-anthropological analysis established by G. E. Lessing in his Hamburgische Dramaturgie. The careful observation and analysis of the performance onstage combined with the cultural context can provide an important moment of critical analysis. By examining the 2001 production of Death of a Salesman on the German stage, new insights into the play and its distillation of the American Dream can be explored.

    Chair en miettes.Norman Ajari - 2022 - Multitudes 89 (4):149-157.

Godwin, Fénelon, and the disappearing teacher.Graham Allen - 2007 - History of European Ideas 33 (1):9-24.
The connection between Godwin and Fénelon has traditionally been restricted to the famous and controversial moment in the first edition of Political Justice (1793) in which Godwin presents an example of the interdependence of rationality and ethical action. This paper argues, however, that Fénelon, and particularly his political and educational treatise Telemachus (1699), plays a significant role in a number of Godwin's subsequent fictional works. Employing Telemachus to explore the theories of education presented by Godwin in the various editions of (...)

An Examination of the Singular in Maimonides and Spinoza: Prophecy, Intellect, and Politics.Norman L. Whitman - 2020 - Cham, Switzerland: Palgrave Macmillan.
This work presents an alternative reading of the respective works of Moses Maimonides and Baruch Spinoza. It argues that both thinkers are primarily concerned with the singular perfection of the complete human being rather than with attaining only rational knowledge. Complete perfection of a human being expresses the unique concord of concrete activities, such as ethics, politics, and psychology, with reason. The necessity of concrete historical activities in generating perfection entails that both thinkers are not primarily concerned with an “escape” (...)

The explicandum of the classical concept of probability.Norman M. Martin - 1951 - Philosophy of Science 18 (1):70-84.
In books on the calculus of probability, there have been many accounts as to what is the meaning of the term “probable.” We can readily divide them into three groups. The first sometimes defines probability in terms of the ratio between the number of cases favorable to an event and the number of equally possible cases. Sometimes probability is defined in some way other than this, but the above formulation, or one similar to it is used to describe the “measure (...)

Chapter 7 provides a noneist account of mathematical and other abstract objects, and of worlds. It then discusses a number of objections, such as that this is just a form of platonism in disguise.
