  1. Real Film.Reid Perkins-Buzo - 2007 - Semiotics:142-158.
Recent work by Ian Aitken and others has sought to re-establish a "Realist approach" to the documentary film in reaction to the postmodernist, pragmatist approach popular in the 1970s and 80s. The Saussurian/Lacanian orientation o f the semiotics that played a large role in the older film theory is rejected and replaced by an analytic theory of representation based on the work of Mary Hesse, Hilary Putnam and W.V.O. Quine. Although this may seem a setback vis-a-vis semiotics, it actually opens (...)

    3D printing: Of signs and objects.John Perkins-Buzo - 2017 - Semiotica 2017 (218):165-177.
3D printing has surely come of age. Widely available, and integrated into many computer-based design and animation curricula, it almost seems to have become a simple extension of what we already had in 2D printing. A 2D image acts as the basis of a sign, which, perhaps upon further twists of the semiotic spiral, may lead one to cognition of a 3D physical pipe. But then, perhaps not. And only in a rare case would the physical pipe in turn find (...)

Malign and benign neglect: a local food system and the myth of sustainable redevelopment in Appalachia Ohio.Angela M. Chapman & Harold A. Perkins - 2020 - Agriculture and Human Values 37 (1):113-127.
Local food systems seem virtuous in the larger context of the neoliberalization of global food systems and increasing food insecurity. However, local food systems are critiqued for reproducing neoliberalism when they prioritize niche-market consumerism over enhancing access for poor people. Advocates, in contrast, insist local food systems contribute to an equitable political economy of food if they are place-based and inclusive. Local food systems must not, according to them, be condemned monolithically in light of their neoliberal tendencies, but evaluated instead (...)

The religious left: How the left lost its argument and fell into a moral abyss.Brad Evans & Julian Reid - 2023 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 55 (5):622-633.
The essay addresses the rise of what we elect to call ‘the religious left’. Documenting the collapse between radicality and religiosity as identity politics embraces moral absolutism, the essay offers a critique of the culture wars and the ensuing flight from political confrontation. Attending in particular to the failures of the left, which we recognise as being a failure of the political imagination, so we turn a critical eye on claims of authenticity and the accelerated embrace of narratives of vulnerability (...)

  24. Early Eighteenth Century Immaterialism in its Philosophical Context.Jasper William Reid - 2000 - Dissertation, Princeton University
In the first quarter of the eighteenth century, four philosophers independently proposed immaterialist theories. Ontologies of this kind had been absent from the philosophical stage for several centuries, and their sudden and widespread revival suggests that there was something about the intellectual milieu at the turn of the seventeenth to the eighteenth century that made a move to immaterialism a natural step to take. This dissertation examines some of the factors which contributed to its revival. ;In this dissertation, immaterialist theories (...)

Hegel’s Critique of Solger: The Problem of Scientific Communication.Jeffrey Reid - 2007 - In Real Words: Language and System in Hegel. University of Toronto Press. pp. 96-103.
Hegel's critique of Solger's theory of irony, through his review of the latter's posthumous writings and correspondence, shows that while he distinguishes Solger's irony over that of Fr. Schlegel, the literary forms that Solger's work takes reveals the lack of mediation and content in his philosophical expression: the linguistic forms that Hegel associates with Spirit.

    Gibraltar killings: British media ethics.Myrna Reid Grant - 1992 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 7 (1):31 – 40.
Governmental response to the 1988 Thames Television documentary Death on the Rock, on the killing of three IRA operatives in Gibraltar, provides a case study for the examination of the British government's alleged attempts at media control. The Stalker affair further suggests this policy. Media restraints in Britain are numerous, including articles in the Emergency Provisions Act, the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the Offenses Against the State Act, and the new Broadcasting Act. It is argued that individual citizens are being (...)

We draw a distinction between defensive and predatory forms of aggression, and how these forms relate to basic neuropsychological systems, especially the Fight-Flight-Freeze-System (FFFS; putatively related to defensive aggression), and the Behavioural Approach System (BAS; putatively related to predatory aggression). These systems may help further to account for proximal brain processes and personality influences in the context of sex differences.

Thomas Reid on logic, rhetoric, and the fine arts: papers on the culture of the mind.Thomas Reid - 2005 - University Park, Pa.: Pennsylvania State University Press. Edited by Alexander Broadie.
Thomas Reid saw the three subjects of logic, rhetoric, and the fine arts as closely cohering aspects of one endeavor that he called the culture of the mind. This was a topic on which Reid lectured for many years in Glasgow, and this volume presents as near a reconstruction of these lectures as is now possible. Though virtually unknown today, this material in fact relates closely to Reid's published works and in particular to the late Essays on (...)
