We study punctual categoricity on a cone and intrinsically punctual functions and obtain complete structural characterizations in terms of model-theoretic notions. As a corollary, we answer a question of Bazhenov, Downey, Kalimullin, and Melnikov by showing that relational structures are not punctually universal. We will also apply this characterisation to derive an algebraic characterisation of relatively punctually categorical mono-unary structures.

There is a global shortage of nurses that affects healthcare delivery, which will be exacerbated with the increasing demand for healthcare professionals by the aging population. The growing shortage requires an ethical exploration on the issue of nurse migration. In this article, we discuss how migration respects the autonomy of nurses, increases cultural diversity, and leads to improved patient satisfaction and health outcomes. We also discuss the potential for negative impacts on public health infrastructures, lack of respect for cultural diversity, (...) and ethical concerns related to autonomy and justice, including coercion and discrimination. This analysis is written from a rights-based ethics approach by referring to rights held by nurses and patient populations. Nurse migration highlights conflicts between nurses and between nurses and healthcare systems. Increased awareness of ethical challenges surrounding nurse migration must be addressed to enhance the well-being of nurses and patient populations. (shrink)

Working toward showing the decidability of the $\forall \exists $ -theory of the ${\Sigma ^0_2}$ -enumeration degrees, we prove that no so-called Ahmad pair of ${\Sigma ^0_2}$ -enumeration degrees can join to ${\mathbf 0}_e'$.

In this paper we prove the equivalence between the Gentzen system G LJ*\c , obtained by deleting the contraction rule from the sequent calculus LJ* (which is a redundant version of LJ), the deductive system IPC*\c and the equational system associated with the variety RL of residuated lattices. This means that the variety RL is the equivalent algebraic semantics for both systems G LJ*\c in the sense of [18] and [4], respectively. The equivalence between G LJ*\c and IPC*\c is a (...) strengthening of a result obtained by H. Ono and Y. Komori [14, Corollary 2.8.1] and the equivalence between G LJ*\c and the equational system associated with the variety RL of residuated lattices is a strengthening of a result obtained by P.M. Idziak [13, Theorem 1].An axiomatization of the restriction of IPC*\c to the formulas whose main connective is the implication connective is obtained by using an interpretation of G LJ*\c in IPC*\c. Imagination has received a great deal of attention in different fields such as psychology, philosophy and the cognitive sciences, in which some works provide a detailed account of the mechanisms involved in the creation and elaboration of imaginary worlds. Although imagination has also been formalized using different logical systems, none of them captures those dynamic mechanisms. In this work, we take inspiration from the Common Frame for Imagination Acts, that identifies the different processes involved in the creation of imaginary worlds, (...) and we use it to define a dynamic formal system called the Logic of Imagination Acts. We build our logic by using a possible-worlds semantics, together with a new set of static and dynamic modal operators. The role of the new dynamic operators is to call different algorithms that encode how the formal model is expanded in order to capture the different mechanisms involved in the creation and development of imaginary worlds. We provide the definitions of the language, the semantics and the algorithms, together with an example that shows how the model is expanded. By the end, we discuss some interesting features of our system, and we point out to possible lines of future work. (shrink)

Defining the degree of categoricity of a computable structure ${\mathcal{M}}$ to be the least degree d for which ${\mathcal{M}}$ is d-computably categorical, we investigate which Turing degrees can be realized as degrees of categoricity. We show that for all n, degrees d.c.e. in and above 0 (n) can be so realized, as can the degree 0 (ω).

We analyze the degree spectra of structures in which different types of immunity conditions are encoded. In particular, we give an example of a structure whose degree spectrum coincides with the hyperimmune degrees. As a corollary, this shows the existence of an almost computable structure of which the complement of the degree spectrum is uncountable.

Technology has become one of the main channels through which people engage in most of their everyday activities. When working, learning, or socializing, the affordances created by technological tools determine the way in which users interact with one another and their environment, thus favoring certain actions and behaviors, while discouraging others. The ethical dimension behind the use of technology has been already studied in recent works, but the question is often formulated in a protective way that focuses on shielding the (...) users from potential detrimental effects. Nevertheless, when considering collateral ethical benefits that the use of technology could bring about, virtue ethics and the notions of “practice” and “practical wisdom” present new opportunities to harness this potential. By understanding the combination of technology, its users and their interactions as a system, technology can be seen as the space where most of its users’ daily practice happens. Through this practice, users can get the chance to collaterally develop and enhance their ethical awareness, sensitivity and reasoning capabilities. This work is shaped as a manifesto that provides the background, motivations and directions needed to ask a complementary question about the ethics of technology that aims towards the potentiality behind the use of technology. Instead of focusing on shielding the users, the proposed _ethical idealist_ approach to the ethics of technology aims to empower them by understanding their use of technology as the space where the development of their practical wisdom, understood in the virtue ethics’ sense, takes place. We show that the Δ0 2 enumeration degrees are dense. We also show that for every nonzero n-c. e. e-degree a, with n≥ 3, one can always find a nonzero 3-c. e. e-degree b such that b < a on the other hand there is a nonzero ωc. e. e-degree which bounds no nonzero n-c. e. e-degree.

At REUSE 2019, ecofeminist art, like a plein-air extension of minimalism, mostly 'Oceanic' explorations, interventions, installations, and performance art, celebrated a clear break from traditional practices of art making, art appreciation, and art theory. Unlike landscape painting, nature photography, and outdoor sculpture parks, as an ecofeminist movement, REUSE 2019 incorporated the oceans not merely as a subject or setting for the artwork but as an integral part of our trans-species co-existence. The exhibits were organized in an open, elongated maze-like Discovery (...) Place as Nonsites, composed into an "abstract reality" of the experience of the natural site (Morris 1993, 46; Ryan 2007, 95–116). The Nonsite Discovery Place invited spectators of different age groups and nationalities; it disrupted the restricted viewing of a high-art galleria. (shrink)

In this paper, we build a c.e. degreedand a computable rigid structure${\cal M}$such thatdis the degree of categoricity of${\cal M}$, butdis not the strong degree of categoricity (...) of${\cal M}$. This solves the open problem of Fokina, Kalimullin, and Miller [13].For a computable structure${\cal S}$, we introduce the notion of the spectral dimension of${\cal S}$, which gives a quantitative characteristic of the degree of categoricity of${\cal S}$. We prove that for a nonzero natural numberN, there is a computable rigid structure${\cal M}$such that$0\prime$is the degree of categoricity of${\cal M}$, and the spectral dimension of${\cal M}$is equal toN. We extend the limitwise monotonicity notion to the case of arbitrary computable linear ordering to get a set which is limitwise monotonic precisely in the non‐computable degrees. Also we get a series of connected non‐uniformity results to obtain new examples of non‐uniformly equivalent families of computable sets with the same enumeration degree spectrum.

We prove that the degree structures of the d.c.e. and the 3-c.e. Turing degrees are not elementarily equivalent, thus refuting a conjecture of Downey. More specifically, we show that the following statement fails in the former but holds in the latter structure: There are degrees f > e > d > 0 such that any degree u ≤ f is either comparable with both e and d, or incomparable with both.

We introduce a hierarchy of sets which can be derived from the integers using countable collections. Such families can be coded into countable algebraic structures preserving their algorithmic properties. We prove that for different finite levels of the hierarchy the corresponding algebraic structures have different classes of possible degree spectra.

Marsilio Ficino’s fame as a translator, not least due to his contributions to theology and the development of hermeticism, has already been established by Frances Yates and debated by Wouter Hanegraaff. For each of his translations of Greek texts, Ficino wrote a preface to guide and to manipulate the reader. This paper presents an analysis of the auctoritas in the paratext of the Corpus Hermeticum, analyzing it as a rhetorical device used by Ficino to express his ideas, particularly the role (...) of Hermes Trismegistus. Ficino used his rhetorical skill not only to translate from Greek to Latin but also to support his theories in commentaries, letters, or, in this case, prefaces. (shrink)

Aesta investigacion se ha centrado en la serie de conceptos juridicos que Eugenio Maria de Hostos (1839-1903) expone primordialmente en Nociones de Derecho constitucional (1902) y en Lecciones de Derecho constitucional (1887). Junto a la obra de Hostos, a manera de un estudio comparado de su cultura constitucional (o juridica), nos hemos interesado por indagar en la posible materia prima de sus ideas propias, resultado de sus lecturas, de sus observaciones directas y de las continuas meditaciones a que lo solicita (...) el doloroso desarrollo de las sociedades latinoamericanas. Esta metodologia nos ha permitido considerar la influencia que sobre su teoria constitucional han ejercido, especialmente, el metodo positivo de Auguste Comte (1798-1857) y las teorias politicas desarrolladas por Florentino Gonzalez (1805-1875), Heinrich Ahrens (1808-1874) y Pierre Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865). In our previous work we have introduced loop-type sequent calculi for propositional linear discrete tense logic and proved that these calculi are sound and complete. Decision procedures using the calculi have been constructed for the considered logic. In the present paper we restrict ourselves to the logic with the unary temporal operators “next” and “henceforth always”. Proof-theory of the sequent calculus of this logic is considered, focusing on loop specification in backward proof-search. We describe cyclic sequents and prove that any (...) loop consists of only cyclic sequents. A class of sequents for which backward proof-search do not require loop-check is presented. It is shown how sequents can be coded by binary strings that are used in backward proof-search for the sake of more efficient loop-check. (shrink)

We give several new characterizations of the continuous enumeration degrees. The main one proves that an enumeration degree is continuous if and only if it is not half a nontrivial relativized K-pair. This leads to a structural dichotomy in the enumeration degrees.

In this paper, we review three influential theories of imagination in order to understand how the dynamics of imagination acts could be modeled using formal languages. While reviewing them, we notice that they are not detailed enough to account for all the mechanisms involved in creating and developing imaginary worlds. We claim those theories could be further refined into what we call the Common Frame for Imagination Acts, which defines a framework that can be used to study the dynamics of (...) imagination using formal languages, and we support our claim by showing how the framework allows to model certain imagination acts step by step. Then, we introduce the Rhombus of Imagination, which is a visual tool that can be used in conjunction with our framework to study the procedural structure of different kinds of imagination acts and identify their dynamic properties.
