Cardiovascular medicine at face value: a qualitative pilot study on clinical axiology.Myriam M. Altamirano-Bustamante, Nelly Altamirano-Bustamante, David Bialostozky, Héctor Cisneros, Carlos Macías-Ojeda, Carmen Flores Cisneros, Ana Serrano, Sergio Ricco, Jorge Mendez, Rodrigo Nava-Diosdado & Adalberto de Hoyos - 2013 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 8 (1):1-9.
IntroductionCardiology is characterized by its state-of-the-art biomedical technology and the predominance of Evidence-Based Medicine. This predominance makes it difficult for healthcare professionals to deal with the ethical dilemmas that emerge in this subspecialty. This paper is a first endeavor to empirically investigate the axiological foundations of the healthcare professionals in a cardiology hospital. Our pilot study selected, as the target population, cardiology personnel not only because of their difficult ethical deliberations but also because of the stringent conditions in which they (...)

Compensating atmospheric turbulence with CNNs for defocused pupil image wavefront sensors.Sergio Luis Suárez Gómez, Carlos González-Gutiérrez, Juan Díaz Suárez, Juan José Fernández Valdivia, José Manuel Rodríguez Ramos, Luis Fernando Rodríguez Ramos & Jesús Daniel Santos Rodríguez - 2021 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 29 (2):180-192.
Adaptive optics are techniques used for processing the spatial resolution of astronomical images taken from large ground-based telescopes. In this work, computational results are presented for a modified curvature sensor, the tomographic pupil image wavefront sensor, which measures the turbulence of the atmosphere, expressed in terms of an expansion over Zernike polynomials. Convolutional neural networks are presented as an alternative to the TPI-WFS reconstruction. This technique is a machine learning model of the family of artificial neural networks, which are widely (...)

Revista de Pensament I Anàlisi 27 (1).

The aim of this paper is both to present the model of shared decision making and to review if it is possible and positive to apply it to mental illness like schizophrenia. First, we show the main features of that clinic relationship. Second, we expose both some medical and some ethical aspects that endorse its applicability. Finally, we annotate some essential characteristics that a medical team should have to do that kind of care relationship.

Critical thinking is a complex, dynamic process formed by attitudes and strategic skills, with the aim of achieving a specific goal or objective. The attitudes, including the critical thinking attitudes, constitute an important part of the idea of good care, of the good professional. It could be said that they become a virtue of the nursing profession. In this context, the ethics of virtue is a theoretical framework that becomes essential for analyse the critical thinking concept in nursing care and (...)

This article investigates the existence of an original Brazilian legal culture. It parts from a critical examination of the key moments in the history of Brazil through the accounts of its most important scholars, such as Caio Prado Júnior, Darcy Ribeiro, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Wilson Martins, Oliveira Viana, Roberto Damatta, José Murilo de Carvalho, among others. It identifies in the Brazilian legal culture something one might call tradition of exception, which can be found in many of its most prominent (...)

Rational Powers in Action: Instrumental Rationality and Extended Agency.Sergio Tenenbaum - 2020 - New York, NY: Oxford University Press.
Rational Powers in Action presents a conception of instrumental rationality as governing actions that are extended in time with indeterminate ends. Tenenbaum argues that previous philosophical theories in this area, in focusing on momentary snapshots of the mind of idealized agents, miss central aspects of human rationality.

Ghost management: How much of the medical literature is shaped behind the scenes by the pharmaceutical industry?Sergio Sismondo - manuscript
Anecdotes have shown that some articles on profitable drugs are constructed by and shepherded through publication by pharmaceutical companies and their agents, whose influence is largely invisible to readers. This is ghost-management, the substantial but unrecognized research, analysis, writing, editing and/or facilitation behind publication. Publicly available documents suggest that these practices extremely widespread affecting up to 40% of clinical trial reports in key periods but it has been unclear how representative these documents are. This article presents the results of an (...)

Reductionism, Emergence and Levels of Reality: The Importance of Being Borderline.Sergio Chibbaro - 2014 - Cham: Imprint: Springer. Edited by Lamberto Rondoni & Angelo Vulpiani.
Scientists have always attempted to explain the world in terms of a few unifying principles. In the fifth century B.C. Democritus boldly claimed that reality is simply a collection of indivisible and eternal parts or atoms. Over the centuries his doctrine has remained a landmark, and much progress in physics is due to its distinction between subjective perception and objective reality. This book discusses theory reduction in physics, which states that the whole is nothing more than the sum of its (...)

Analytic Philosophy Without Naturalism.Sergio Galvan, Antonella Corradini & Jonathan Lowe (eds.) - 2005 - New York: Routledge.
In recent years numerous attempts have been made by analytic philosophers to naturalize various different domains of philosophical inquiry. All of these attempts have had the common goal of rendering these areas of philosophy amenable to empirical methods, with the intention of securing for them the supposedly objective status and broad intellectual appeal currently associated with such approaches. This volume brings together internationally recognised analytic philosophers, including Alvin Plantinga, Peter van Inwagen and Robert Audi, to question the project of naturalism. (...)

This article addresses the semiotic problem of how meaning is agentially grounded: how actual meaning is possible and is justifiably supported by agents’ capabilities and purposes. This article is particularly focused on human agential grounding; however, to a great degree, insights presented here can be extended to other living beings. Specifically, agential meaning is examined here inside the framework of agentive semiotics and embodied, situated and enactive cognition theories, in line with the mind-life continuity general thesis. The introduction of ethics in the running of a corporate firm is functional to the reaching of its business purposes. The adoption of values of distributive justice (equity) and respect (trust) concurs and determines the building of trust both inside thecorporation itself and externally, making the birth of solid relationships based on collaboration and a lasting sense of loyalty possible in a productive world, which tends to praise efficiency throughout the entire production line. This is the first Italian translation of Bentham’s “Deontology”. The translation goes with a rather extended apparatus meant to provide the reader with some information on Bentham’s ethical theory's own context. Some room is made for so-called forerunners of Utilitarianism, from the consequentialist-voluntarist theology of Leibniz, Malebranche, John Gay, Thomas Brown and William Paley to Locke and Hartley's incompatible associationist theories. After the theoretical context, also the real-world context is documented, from Bentham’s campaigns against the oppression of women and cruelty (...)
