The impact of empathy and reappraisal on emotional intensity recognition.Navot Naor, Simone G. Shamay-Tsoory, Gal Sheppes & Hadas Okon-Singer - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (5):972-987.
ABSTRACTEmpathy represents a fundamental ability that allows for the creation and cultivation of social bonds. As part of the empathic process, individuals use their own emotional state to interpret the content and intensity of other people’s emotions. Therefore, the current study was designed to test two hypotheses: empathy for the pain of another will result in biased emotional intensity judgment; and changing one’s emotion via emotion regulation will modulate these biased judgments. To test these hypotheses, in experiment one we used (...)

Inter-brain plasticity as a biological mechanism of change in psychotherapy: A review and integrative model.Haran Sened, Sigal Zilcha-Mano & Simone Shamay-Tsoory - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Recent models of psychopathology and psychotherapy highlight the importance of interpersonal factors. The current review offers a biological perspective on these interpersonal processes by examining inter-brain synchrony—the coupling of brain activity between people interacting with one another. High inter-brain synchrony is associated with better relationships in therapy and in daily life, while deficits in the ability to achieve inter-brain synchrony are associated with a variety of psychological and developmental disorders. The review suggests that therapy improves patients’ ability to achieve such (...)

The benefits of learning movement sequences in social interactions.Guy Nahardiya, Andrey Markus, Rotem Bennet & Simone G. Shamay-Tsoory - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Although we frequently acquire knowledge and skills through social interactions, the focus of most research on learning is on individual learning. Here we characterize Interaction Based Learning, which represents the acquisition of knowledge or skill through social interactions, and compare it to Observational Learning —learning by observation. To that end, we designed a movement synchronization paradigm whereby participants learned Tai-Chi inspired movement sequences from trained teachers in two separated sessions. We used a motion capture system to track the movement of (...)

Zinger, Clunker, Clanger, Flunker: On Two-Point Comparisons, and Why we Love Them.Joshua Landy - 2024 - British Journal of Aesthetics 64 (4):563-584.
According to a now-standard theory, ‘Juliet is the sun’ is supposed to be a ‘pregnant’ metaphor, ready at any moment to beget a sprawling heap of adorable semantic puppies. Its two parts—‘Juliet’ and ‘the sun’—ostensibly meet at a virtually endless number of points, and it’s allegedly illuminating, enjoyable, or at least interesting to sit there all day spelling them out. But what if none of that is true? What if, instead, a successful creative comparison tends to offer exactly two points (...)
