A National Shrine to Scapegoating?: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Washington, D.C.Jon Pahl - 1995 - Contagion: Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture 2 (1):165-188.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:A National Shrine to Scapegoating? The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Washington, D.C. Jon Pahl Valparaiso University In a recent survey I conducted of visitors to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, 92 percent agreed that "the memorial is a sacred place, and should be treated as such."1 Clearly, this place, by some reports the most visited site in the U.S. capital, draws devotion. But how does a pilgrimage (...)

Of Saints, Shrines, and Tractors: Untangling the Meaning of Islam in Soviet Central Asia.Paolo Sartori - 2019 - Journal of Islamic Studies 30 (3):367-405.
In this article I suggest that in the Soviet period Central Asians cultivated and conceptualized Islam as an episteme. They did this by reaching beyond alienating categories offered to them by the state. I argue that the constitution of an Islamic culture was made possible, among other things, by Central Asians’ encounters with the past, most notably with what they perceived as an Islamic past. We observe the curious phenomenon of Central Asians’ continuous interaction with the Islamic historical sites that (...)

The glorious Kiev shrine - the miraculous icon of Mykola Mokrogo and its place in the East Slavic culture.N. Vereshchahina - 1999 - Ukrainian Religious Studies 10:52-58.
The glorious Sophia image of Nikolai Mokrogo, now completely forgotten, was the oldest national shrine and one of the first miraculous icons of Kievan Rus known to us. The name of the icon is associated with the "Miracle of the Infant in Kiev", which dates from the researchers no later than 1090. The legend tells about the marriage, which went to the pilgrimage to the relics of Boris and Gleb in Vyshgorod. They returned to Kyiv by the Dnipro in (...)

Crowning, rotating, and emanating hierophanies with elevatio aspect in wayside shrines.Małgorzata Haładewicz-Grzelak - 2022 - Semiotica 2022 (244):81-114.
My aim in this paper is to investigate the variants of directionality implied in visual hieratic texts as religious markers in the sacrosphere, which are substantially expressed in the form of a wayside shrine/cross. The methodological underpinnings for this project rely on the proposed semiotactics : the investigative perspective modeled after phonotactics – a branch of phonology investigating the restrictions on and the possibilities of phoneme combinations in languages. The study draws on digital documentation of wayside shrines, crosses, and (...)

Rolling between Burial and Shrine: A Tale of Two Chariot Processions at Chulan Tomb 2 in Eastern Han China.Jie Shi - 2021 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 135 (3):433.
Chulan Tomb 2 in present-day Suxian, Anhui province, offers the rare opportunity to study the hitherto unknown relationship between multiple depictions of chariot processions—one of the most popular pictorial motifs in Eastern Han funerary art—at different locations in a single cemetery. Comparing this tomb’s two chariot processions in stylistic, iconographic, and positional terms, this paper draws attention to a special dragon motif that ornaments a few special chariots and argues that these “dragon chariots,” unique among stone carvings of the Eastern (...)

Religion and Conflict in Japan with Special Reference to Shinto and Yasukuni Shrine.Michael Pye - 2003 - Diogenes 50 (3):45-59.
While Japanese society in some respects appears to be very coherent, its history has frequently been one of internal tension and strife. Factionalism is strong even today, and takes both political and religious forms. When the indigenous Shinto religion was harnessed for political and ideological purposes in the 19th century, during a time of rapid national development, life was made very difficult for other religions such as Buddhism. The post-war Constitution of 1946 provided for the equality of all religions under (...)

Small God, Big City: Earth God Shrines in Urban Hong Kong.Michael Wolf - 2013 - Columbia University Press.
Following the success of Hong Kong Corner Houses, German photographer Michael Wolf continues his collaboration with Hong Kong University Press to produce Small God, Big City. Wolf again uses his creative eye to draw attention to overlooked objects in the visually rich urban environment of Hong Kong. This time the object is the Earth God shrine, found commonly by the doorways of shops and homes throughout Hong Kong. Through his visually stimulating and thought-provoking photographs, Wolf challenges our sensitivity to (...)

Seeing and Believing: The Construction of Sanctity in Early-Medieval Saints' Shrines.Cynthia Hahn - 1997 - Speculum 72 (4):1079-1106.
Among sensory markers for sanctity, it was the sight of the holy that most often inspired faith in the early Middle Ages. Shouts, prayers, and hymns might have greeted a miracle, and a wondrous odor confirmed the presence of an incorrupt body; but in most miracle stories it was “things seen” that turned the heart toward faith. This primacy of the visual settled a burden of proof squarely upon the early-medieval artist : how could the body of the saint, if (...)

This chapter explores the role that non-textual narrations of biblical stories can play in Christian life and practice. Our case study is the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Kabuga, Rwanda. The stations at the shrine tell the story of Jesus’s life and passion, incorporating images from the Catholic devotional tradition of Divine Mercy and elements evoking the Rwandan genocide. While many philosophical accounts of narratives presuppose that narratives are textual, material and visual art like the Kabuga shrine (...)

Do economic determinants influence a faith phenomenon? Analysis of international pilgrimages to the Shrine of Fátima.Matheus Belucio, José Alberto Fuinhas, Carlos Vieira & Gutemberg Xavier dos Santos - 2024 - Horizonte 21 (65):e216503.
The economy is part of everyday life in modern societies and is a crucial determinant of social well-being. For this reason, it is important to observe how economic determinants can influence a fundamental social phenomenon: faith. This paper analyzes how economic determinants influence international pilgrimages to the Shrine of Fátima (Portugal). A data panel from 2008 to 2022 was constructed, and a panel ARDL model was estimated. The results confirm the relationship between economics and homo religiosus. The cost of (...)

Foucault and the Architecture of Surveillance: Creating Regimes of Power in Schools, Shrines, and Society.Joseph M. Piro - 2008 - Educational Studies: A Jrnl of the American Educ. Studies Assoc 44 (1):30-46.
Michel Foucault's critical studies concerning regimes of power are of special interest when applied to architecture. In particular, he warned of the hazards of building surveillance into architectural structures for the purpose of monitoring people and took as his historical exemplar English philosopher Jeremy Bentham's ?Panopticon,? a structure originally used to assist in rehabilitating prisoners. He felt this kind of regulatory control resulted in maintaining power of one group over another. This article discusses what Foucault called the general ordering of (...)

A Study on the Functions and Roles of the Jongmyo Shrine(宗廟) before Qin(秦) Dynasty― Focusing on Hieroglyphics of Ancient Letters, researches of the ruins of Goong - Myo(宮廟) during Zhou(周) period and Documentary Cases ―. 서정화 - 2016 - 동서철학연구(Dong Seo Cheol Hak Yeon Gu; Studies in Philosophy East-West) 79 (79):65-94.
