Our self-concept is constantly faced with self-relevant information. Prevailing research suggests that information's valence plays a central role in shaping our self-views. However, the need for stability within the self-concept structure and the inherent alignment of positive feedback with the pre-existing self-views of healthy individuals might mask valence and congruence effects. In this study (N = 30, undergraduates), we orthogonalized feedback valence and self-congruence effects to examine the behavioral and electrophysiological signatures of self-relevant feedback processing and self-concept updating. We found (...) that participants had a preference for integrating self-congruent and dismissing self-incongruent feedback, regardless of its valence. Consistently, electroencephalography results revealed that feedback congruence, but not feedback valence, is rapidly detected during early processing stages. Our findings diverge from the accepted notion that self-concept updating is based on the selective incorporation of positive information. These findings offer novel insights into self-concept dynamics, with implications for the understanding of psychopathological conditions. (shrink)

Starting with some illustrative examples, I develop a systematic account of a specific type of experimentation--an experimentation which is not, as in the "standard view", driven by specific theories. It is typically practiced in periods in which no theory or--even more fundamentally--no conceptual framework is readily available. I call it exploratory experimentation and I explicate its systematic guidelines. From the historical examples I argue furthermore that exploratory experimentation may have an immense, but hitherto widely neglected, epistemic significance.

Automatic conservation of energy-momentum and angular momentum is guaranteed in a gravitational theory if, via the field equations, the conservation laws for the material currents are reduced to the contracted Bianchi identities. We first execute an irreducible decomposition of the Bianchi identities in a Riemann-Cartan space-time. Then, starting from a Riemannian space-time with or without torsion, we determine those gravitational theories which have automatic conservation: general relativity and the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory, both with cosmological constant, and the nonviable pseudoscalar model. The (...) Poincaré gauge theory of gravity, like gauge theories of internal groups, has no automatic conservation in the sense defined above. This does not lead to any difficulties in principle. In the research on the Early Modern Period distributed among various disciplines – history, religion, philosophy, law, literature –, there is no doubt that Samuel Pufendorf (1632–1694) was one of the outstanding representatives of modern, secular natural law, whose work had an impact over a century that can hardly be overestimated. When did the research development associated with Pufendorf’s name begin? The article examines this question from the perspective of history of science using the example of the jurisprudence dissertation of (...) The philosophical nature of ethical reasoning generates different definitions of moral subjectivity. Thus any talk of leadership ethics requires not only that we confront biases regarding human nature and the purpose of leadership and business conduct, but also differing ethical approaches which may be rooted in specific cultural and religious backgrounds. Building a conceptual framework for leadership ethics which overcomes these obstacles of bias and cultural embeddedness therefore requires another approach. It can be found in the concept of the Global (...) Ethos values. Using Kohlberg’s model of moral development, the Global Ethos values appear as a protoethical system of values with a level-six effect, a universally explicable deontological canon of ethical values below the sixth level, i.e. in the realm of hands-on management and leadership. As non-judgmental and regulative guiding principles, these values are the normative guidelines for selecting a situationally appropriate form of leadership style before and beyond any philosophical explication and rationale. The laws of vital phenomena are to a high degree in contradiction with the principle of absolute causality. Hence the problem arises, what position and rank this principle occupies in biology. The solution of this contradiction might be found in a relaxation of the principle, or in its broadening or by means of the addition of a second heterogenic principle of relationship.The first solution is today rather in favour, since modern physics, especially based on the ”Uncertainty Principle” ofHeisenberg, is inclined (...) to repudiate a strictly causal connection of events in the realm of atomic processes.Broadening of the principle of causality is aimed at to a certain degree by the doctrine of holism. According to this theory biological axioms, principles, and laws are the more universal and the more widely valid, and physical laws should be deduced from them by simplification .The third way is followed by vitalistic doctrines.The ”trialistic” doctrine, presented by the author, represents a development of vitalistic theory. It does not content itself with establishing the fact of the heterogenity of causal and biological laws, but tries to go beyond this and to understand, why the laws of the organic world are of just their special kind and not of another. Moreover it attempts to fit these distinctive principles into the universal system of laws. The trialistic theory divides the wholeness of events into three fundamentally different ”dimensions”, into ”matter”, ”psyche” and ”spirit”, or within the special sphere of living forms into: material, vital and organismic ”dimension”. While in the material sphere the causal connection remains dominant, solely and absolutely, the spiritual or organismic ”dimension” is ruled by ”finality”, a mode of connection of a special kind, caracterized by an active influence on the present of the non-realised future.The interposition of a neutral sphere opens up the possibility of understanding the interweaving of causal and final laws, without interference with one another.Les lois des apparitions de la vie sont difficilement conciliables avec le principe d'une causalité absolue. Le problème se pose donc de savoir, quelle position et quel rÔle ce principe occupe en biologie. La solution de cette contradiction pourrait Être trouvée dans une atténuation ou un élargissement de ce principe comme tel ou par l'adjonction d'un second principe de liaison hétérogène.La première solution est en faveur aujourd'hui depuis que la physique moderne, s'appuyant principalement sur la „Unsicherheitsrelation” deHeisenberg, tend à renoncer à une liaison strictement causale de ce qui se passe dans le domaine des processus atomiques.L'élargissement du principe de causalité est désiré en un certain sens par le holisme. Selon cette théorie les axiomes, les principes et les lois biologiques sont plus universels et d'une valeur plus étendue et il faut en déduire les règles physiques par dérivation simplifiante .La troisième solution nous est donnée par les doctrines vitalistes.La théorie présentée par l'auteur, appelée „trialiste”, met en avant un développement de la doctrine vitaliste. Il ne lui suffit pas de s'arrÊter à l'existence de l'hétérogénité des lois causales et biologiques, mais elle veut aller plus loin, afin de savoir pourquoi les règles déterminant l'organisme sont telles et pas autres. Et elle cherche à mettre de l'ordre dans les principes déterminants en les ènboÎtant dans le système universel de lois. La théorie trialiste divise l'univers des événements en trois „dimensions” qui sont: Matière, „Psyché” et Esprit, ou dans le domaine spécial des formes vivantes en: Matière, Dimension vitale et Dimension organismique. Tandis que dans la dimension matérielle la connexion causale est uniquement et absolument valable, la dimension spirituelle ou organismique est régie par la „Finalité”, un mode de connexion d'un genre spécial, désigné par une influence active du présent par le futur non réalisé.L'interposition d'une sphère neutre nous amène à la possibilité de comprendre l'enchaÎnement es lois causales et finales sans que les unes détruisent les autres. These remarks deal with the attempt of G. Klaus to establish a theory of knowledge by combining basic ideas of cybernetics and information theory with the position of dialectical materialism. Klaus underlines the materialistic approach and the importance of science, rather than Hegelian dialectics. Irrespective of the ideological issues, the following of Klaus' suggestions are debatable: The connection between brain structure and logical reasoning. Treating information and information processing as basic notions, although this does not account for the capacity of (...) the human mind to inquire into any object whatever. Regarding the evolution of mankind as a selection process, determined by the way in which signals from the environment are selected and elaborated. Explaining creative thinking by the trial and error method. Heidelberg's intellectual milieu of the early twentieth century can be characterised as a ‘laboratory of the modern age’. Here scholars intensively discussed the crisis of the modern age and in numerous historical and systematic studies attempted to determine the ‘cultural significance’ of religion for modernity. This article takes a look at exemplary aspects of the debates on religion of the jurist Georg Jellinek, the sociologist Max Weber and the Protestant theologian Ernst Troeltsch. Jellinek investigated the significance of religious ideas for (...) the genesis of modern human rights, Weber analysed the ascetic-Protestant, i.e. Puritan roots of the modern capitalism and Troeltsch examined the differences between the social ethos of German Lutheranism and that of the Calvinist world of thought. The primary concern of all was the relevance of religion to present times. For this reason it is necessary that the theories set forth by Jellinek, Weber and Troeltsch also be read with regard to their possible ‘cultural significance’ for the present day. (shrink)
