This work examines concept of sincerity in politics and international relations in order to discuss what we should expect of politicians, within what parameters should they work, and how their decisions and actions could be made consistent with morality. The collection features an international cast of authors who specialize in the topic of sincerity in politics and international relations. Each chapter will be focused on a contemporary issue in politics and international relations, including corruption, public hypocrisy, cynicism, trust, security, policy (...) formulation and decision-making, political apology, public reason, denial and self-deception,and will argue against the background of a Kantian view of sincerity as unconditional. Focusing on sincerity bearing on political actions, practices, and institutions at national and international level, the collection will include an introduction by the editors that will serve to place the contributions in the context of ongoing contemporary debates on sincerity in politics and international theory. Offering a significant comprehensive outlook on the practical limits of sincerity in political affairs, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars alike. (shrink)

One of us [Gilbert, M.. “Collective Belief and Scientific Change.” Sociality and Responsibility. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield. 37-49.] has proposed that ascriptions of beliefs to scientific communities generally involve a common notion of collective belief described by her in numerous places. A given collective belief involves a joint commitment of the parties, who thereby constitute what Gilbert refers to as a plural subject. Assuming that this interpretive hypothesis is correct, and that some of the belief ascriptions in (...) question are true, then the members of some scientific communities have obligations that may act as barriers both to the generation and, hence, the fair evaluation of new ideas and to changes in their community’s beliefs. We argue that this may help to explain Thomas Kuhn’s observations on “normal science”, and go on to develop the relationship between Gilbert's proposal and several features of a group of physicists working on a fundamental physical theory called “string theory”, as described by physicist Lee Smolin [Smolin, L.. The Trouble with Physics. Mariner Books: New York.]. We argue that the features of the string theory community that Smolin cites are well explained by the hypothesis that the community is a plural subject of belief. (shrink)

ABSTRACT What kind of threat does terrorism pose to a community? Two models of terrorism are introduced. The Unjust War model views terrorism as an attack on the innocent, but thereby misidentifies its criminal character. The Political Crime model regards it as violence for political ends, by‐passing democratic channels. This misconstrues the terrorist's aim of waging war against a state whose legitimacy he contests. Associated with the models of terrorism are two conceptions of community, the Communitarian and the Hobbesian, respectively. (...) While the Communitarian conception sees the community as independent of the state, the Hobbesian identifies them, thus assimilating an attack on the state to a threat to the community. The Hobbesian conception, however, even when amplified by democratic theory, provides inadequate resources to rebut a challenge to the state's legitimacy, in particular one concerning territorial boundaries. Arguments for permitting secession are discussed. The Communitarian conception may be able to ground legitimacy claims; but it may also justify some terrorist campaigns as needed to preserve communities. (shrink)

La justice prédictive est ici sommairement définie comme une justice prédite par des algorithmes et, partant, envisagée comme une justice simplement virtuelle, c’est-à-dire seulement probable, non acquise dans son existence et dont l’actualisation est laissée à la création, à l’imagination et à l’intuition des utilisateurs qui feront que la prédiction restera « une » solution proposée ou deviendra « la » solution finalement adoptée. La justice prédictive apparaît ainsi comme un espace de prospective juridique pour les justiciables, les professions juridiques (...) et la science du droit. Cette introduction à une justice simplement virtuelle étudie, d’une part, le risque qui reste mesuré d’une domination du virtuel, lorsque celui-ci devient prescriptif pour les professionnels ou dissuasif pour les justiciables ; elle envisage, d’autre part, l’avenir espéré d’une responsabilisation face au virtuel, par une nécessaire compréhension technique de l’outil de justice prédictive et une essentielle respiration éthique de ses acteurs. Aristote est largement antérieur à Thomas d'Aquin et à la constitution de la théologie chrétienne au Moyen Âge. Pourtant sa philosophie, sur des questions qui, bien extraordinairement, allaient influencer Thomas d'Aquin et d'autres théologiens (musulmans et chrétiens), s'était révélée compatible avec les livres de foi du christianisme (Bible) et de l'islam (Coran). C'est donc bien ces théologiens qui avaient hérité de lui et non le contraire. Mais en dépit de cet héritage, les textes fondateurs des religions concernées ont leur part, (...) la plus importante sans doute, dans les doctrines philosophiques des théologiens de ces deux religions "révélées". Par ailleurs, la part de l'aristotélisme dans ce travail, celle de projeter sa lumière sur une doctrine du bonheur qui émane de lui mais qui s'abreuve à d'autres sources, conduit à dire que la doctrine de Thomas d'Aquin ne peut être une simple reprise de celle d'Aristote. Racially disparate policing, prosecution, and punishment harm individuals, families, and communities. These practices must be understood within the context of the development of the criminal legal system as a means of racialized social control. This context permits a critical examination of the way criminalization has been and is still deployed to subject poor and racialized communities to systemic injustices.
