Technical reasoning refers to making inferences about how to use tools. The degree of technical reasoning is indicated by the bias of the gaze on the functional part of the tool when in use. Few studies have examined whether technical reasoning differs between familiar and unfamiliar novel tools. In addition, what effect the intention to use the tool has on technical reasoning has not been determined. This study examined gaze shifts in relation to familiar or unfamiliar tools, under three conditions, (...) among 14 healthy adults. The cumulative fixation time on the functional part of the tool served as a quantitative indicator of the degree of technical reasoning. The two-way analysis of variance for tools and conditions revealed that the cumulative fixation time significantly increased under free viewing and use conditions, compared to lift conditions. Relative to the free viewing condition, cumulative fixation time for unfamiliar tools significantly decreased in the lift condition and significantly increased in the use condition. Importantly, the results showed that technical reasoning was performed in both the use and the free viewing conditions. However, technical reasoning in the free viewing condition was not as strong as in the use condition. The difference between technical reasoning in free viewing and use conditions may indicate the difference between automatic and intentional technical reasoning. (shrink)

The history of statistics is filled with many controversies, in which the prime focus has been the difference in the “interpretation of probability” between Fre- quentist and Bayesian theories. Many philosophical arguments have been elabo- rated to examine the problems of both theories based on this dichotomized view of statistics, including the well-known stopping-rule problem and the catch-all hy- pothesis problem. However, there are also several “hybrid” approaches in theory, practice, and philosophical analysis. This poses many fundamental questions. This paper (...) reviews three cases and argues that the interpretation problem of probabil- ity is insufficient to begin a philosophical analysis of the current issues in the field of statistics. AI systems, which receive vast amounts of information including privacy information, are emerging. Protecting the privacy of the general public is an important issue for democracies. In this study, “Public space watched by AI- connected cameras” is taken as an example of an AI-system that is expected to be used for public purposes and has a relatively high privacy violation risk. It is defined as a wide public area where every point is monitored by multiple AI-connected street cameras. The following (...) four socially acceptable applications of “Public space watched by AI- connected cameras” are discussed: (1) Human/vehicle tracking, (2) Watching over children, (3) Detection of abnormal situations, (4) Criminal and terrorist behavior pattern analysis. As for privacy protection measures for AI systems, in addition to reliable protection itself, reliable recording and auditing to deter misuse and abuse is considered a prerequisite to ensure that the general public can feel secure. In this paper, the concept of “Verifiable record of AI output”, which is a verifiable and tamper-proof record and disclosure of AI output is proposed. “Verifiable record of AI output” is based on the idea that it may be more realistic to apply a simple exit control only for AI output to confirm rule conformance, rather than anonymizing huge AI inputs such as Big Data or controlling internal AI processes that are black-boxed. A concrete example of implementing “Verifiable record of AI output” in “Public space watched by AI-connected cameras” is proposed. In the “Verifiable record of AI output”, the AI system is enclosed in an outbound firewall, and only AI outputs that are confirmed to be in line with “the purpose of use approved in advance through social discussion” are allowed to be transmitted. The process from application to permission of transmission is anonymized and disclosed in a verifiable and tamper-proof manner. This public record can be verified by the general public or an auditing organization to ensure that any misuse or abuse of the AI system will be exposed. The “Verifiable record of AI output” proposed in this paper is characterized by reliable measurement and recording of AI output, and its disclosure for auditing purposes. The possibility of using this as a template to apply to other AI systems that receive Big Data input, including the privacy of the general public, is considered. (shrink)

In this paper, we show that all semisimple varieties of bounded weak-commutative residuated lattices with an S4-like modal operator are discriminator varieties. We also give a characterization of discriminator and EDPC varieties of bounded weak-commutative residuated lattices with an S4-like modal operator follows.

We propose an efficient algorithm for deciding the reachability between any nodes on XML data represented by connected directed graphs. We develop a technique to reduce the size of the reference table for the reachability test. Using the small table and the standard range labeling method for rooted ordered trees, we show that our algorithm answers almost queries in a constant time preserving the space efficiency and a reasonable preprocessing time.

Media, politicians, and the courts portray college campuses as divided over diversity and affirmative action. But what do students and faculty really think? This book uses a novel technique to elicit honest opinions from students and faculty and measure preferences for diversity in undergraduate admissions and faculty recruitment at seven major universities, breaking out attitudes by participants' race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, and political partisanship. Scholarly excellence is a top priority everywhere, but the authors show that when students consider individual (...) candidates, they favor members of all traditionally underrepresented groups - by race, ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic background. Moreover, there is little evidence of polarization in the attitudes of different student groups. The book reveals that campus communities are less deeply divided than they are often portrayed to be; although affirmative action remains controversial in the abstract, there is broad support for prioritizing diversity in practice. Jeanne Fichtner-Egloff analysiert die Epoche um 1900 in Japan und zeigt, dass sie als Übergang in ein neues Selbstverständnis in der Kunst zu verstehen ist. Mit den um 1910 herausgegebenen Schriften des Bildhauers und Schriftstellers Takamura Kōtarōs wurde zum ersten Mal die uneingeschränkte Ausdrucksfreiheit der subjektiven Empfindung eines Künstlers propagiert. Mit diesem Verständnis schien plötzlich ein allgemein gültiges Konzept von Kunst als autonome Schöpfung zu existieren, das sich an die Ideen der fauvistischen Künstler in Frankreich anlehnte. Gleichzeitig entstanden in (...) den Städten erste private Galerien und Messen und es bildeten sich eigenständige Künstlergruppen, die selbst Ausstellungen organisierten, ohne sich offiziellen Begutachtern zu unterwerfen. Diese Entwicklung erzeugte ein interessantes Spannungsfeld zwischen traditionellen Kunstauffassungen und neu rezipiertem westlichen Gedankenguts. (shrink)
