Just as skepticism about our knowledge of the external world is thought to engender a kind of despair, skepticism about our philosophical knowledge, if true, engenders a despair of a similar kind. We remain optimistic. Despair, we urge, needn’t get the best of us. Philosophical knowledge is attainable. Progress is possible. But we aren’t overly optimistic either. In this chapter, I propose a minimal construal of philosophical health that contains two core elements: variegated coherence and intentional directedness at a trans-subjective good. Combining elements from the works of Iris Murdoch and Marshall Rosenberg, I sketch a practice I dub non-violent just communication and argue that it promotes philosophical health as per the minimal construal and that we can derive from it a principle of philosophical health to complement the list of five principles of philosophical health that have (...) been proposed by Luis de Miranda. I then show that the practice of non-violent just communication promotes what Miranda Fricker has characterized as hermeneutic virtue and testimonial sensibility and, finally, suggest that my minimal notion of philosophical health is a useful tool to contrast various conceptions of philosophical counselling. La philosophie, telle qu’elle est pratiquée dans la plupart des départements universitaires, ne se préoccupe pas de la manière dont nous habitons et percevons le monde. Elle ne se préoccupe pas vraiment des pratiques qui visent à former le type de personnes que nous devenons. Ses travaux soulignent l’importance des habitudes. This paper questions the argument in Tae-Yeoun Keum’s Plato and the Mythic Tradition in Political Thought about the relation between myth and philosophical discourse. In the context of Plato’s Republic in particular, myth remains but one of the several devices that are presented as acceptable only if they are vetted by and consistent with reason. More generally, I ask about the justification or grounding of myth, and how we can know that myth is warranted if it is incommensurable with reason.

ABSTRACT What’s the good of getting angry with a person? Some would argue that angry emotions like indignation or resentment are intrinsically good when they are an apt response. But many think this answer is not fully satisfactory. An increasing number of philosophers add that accusatory anger has value because of what it communicates to the blamee, and because of its downstream cultivating effects on the blamee. Mediators and conflict resolution strategists share an interest with philosophers in the value of (...) reactive attitudes for interpersonal communication, but prominent thinkers from those fields arrive at rather different verdicts about the effects of accusatory anger. On a more therapeutic approach to interpersonal conflict, angry accusation is commonly understood to obfuscate mutual understanding and to have bad downstream effects on the blamee. Below, I discuss how the compassionate communication approach casts doubt on the purported valuable effects of angry accusation, and I provide empirical support for this worry. I argue that philosophers should reconsider their empirical assumptions about the human psychology of discord, and hypothesize that accusatory anger is unlikely to have the communicative and cultivating effects that it is purported to have. I conclude by highlighting further empirical and ethical questions this hypothesis generates. (shrink)

본고의 논의는 신경이미지 실험이 윤리학적 논의에 어떻게 연관될 수 있으며 어떤 영향들을 미칠 수 있는가를 보여주는 사례를 다룬다. 본고의 목표는 그린(J. Greene)의 이중과정 모델(Dual Process Model)을 뒷받침하는 신경이미지 실험에 대한 비판적 고찰을 통해 그린의 입장이 가지고 있는 문제점을 제시하는 것이다. 이 목표를 이루기 위해 우선 그린의 이중과정 모델을 지지하는 신경이미지 실험에 대해 설명할 것이다. 본고에서 다루는 신경 실험은 인간이 도덕적 판단을 할 때 어떤 경우에는 인지적 판단을 하고 어떤 경우에는 감정적 판단을 한다는 것을 보여준다. 그린의 주장에 따르면, 인지적 판단은 공리주의적 (...) 판단이고 감정적 판단은 의무론적 판단이다. 감정적 판단은 집단 내의 도덕적 문제를 해결하는 데에는 유용할 수 있지만 상식을 공유하지 않는 집단들 사이에서 일어나는 도덕적 갈등을 해결하는 데에는 도움이 되지 못한다. 이런 문제들을 해결하기 위해선 인지적 판단을 기반으로 한 도덕 이론을 가져야 한다고 그린은 주장한다. 논자는 그린의 주장이 가진 몇 가지 문제점을 제시할 것이다. 우선, 감정적 판단이 집단과 집단 사이의 도덕적 갈등을 해결하는데 적절하지 않으며 이런 종류의 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 공리주의적 사고를 추구해야 한다는 그린의 주장에 반대할 것이다. 집단 사이의 문제를 해결하기 위해 공리주의적 사고를 적용할 때 나타날 수 있는 문제점을 제시할 것이다. 또한 감정에 기반을 둔 판단에 의존하는 것이 때로는 이런 도덕적 문제를 해결하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다고 주장할 것이다. 다음으로, 그린의 신경이미지 실험에서의 감정적 판단이 의무론적 판단이라는 입장에 문제가 있다고 주장할 것이다. 이어서 그린이 말하는 감정적 판단이 의무론적 판단이 아닌 다른 종류의 판단일 수 있다는 것을 주장할 것이다. 그러한 판단은 유덕한 사람이 내리는 판단 혹은 의지적 필연성(volitional necessity)에 의해 내려진 판단일 수 있다고 주장할 것이다. 마지막으로 그 판단은 자기충실성을 가진 사람이 내리는 판단일 수 있다고 주장할 것이다.
