In this text, features of fiction are discussed as to their ability for handling cultural diversity in cosmopolitan education. The argument is developed in two steps. First, the biblical story about the construction of the the tower of Babel is analyzed and discussed with respect to what is says about diversity and how it says it. In a second step, aspects of art are gathered from various sources, Aristotle, Cassirer, Gadamer, Langer, Kant, Rorty, in order to define the communicative possibilieties (...) of art with respect to cosmopolitan education. Auf mehrfache Weise ist dieses Buch der Versuch einer Annäherung: Der Autor nähert sich dem Spiel auf wissenschaftliche Weise, und für die Wissenschaft (vom Spiel) fordert er spielerische Vorgehensweisen. Spiel und Wissenschaft wiederum versucht er einander anzunähern, indem er zwischen modernen naturwissenschaftlichen Theorien aus der Biologie, der Thermodynamik und der Quantenphysik und dem klassischen geisteswissenschaftlichen Ansatz von Schiller eine Verbindung herstellt: Im Spiel- und in einer spielerischen Wissenschaft - öffnet sich der Mensch den Zugang zu seinen Erkenntnis- und Handlungspotentialen.

In times of the coronavirus, complying with public health policies is essential to save lives. Understanding the factors that influence compliance with social distancing measures is therefore an urgent issue. The present research investigated the role of political and social trust for social distancing using a variety of methods. In Study 1, conducted with a sample from the United Kingdom in the midst of the virus outbreak, neither political nor social trust had main associations with self-reported social distancing tendencies. However, (...) both factors interacted such that social trust was associated with lower social distancing tendencies among participants with low levels of political trust. In Study 2, using an experimental longitudinal design and again conducted with a sample collected from the UK during the first wave of the pandemic, social distancing practices increased over time, independent of an experimental manipulation of political trust. Moreover, while the interaction between political and social trust from the first study could not be conceptually replicated, social trust was positively related to social distancing intentions. Moving from the individual to the country level and assessing actual behavior at both the first and second wave of the pandemic, in Study 3, country-level political trust was related to less social distancing during the first wave. Social trust was related to a higher growth rate of infections. Against the background of these inconsistent findings, we discuss the potential positive and unexpected negative effects of social trust for social distancing. (shrink)

Mit Hothos Vorlesungsnachschrift aus dem Sommersemester 1823 liegt ein Zeugnis zu Hegels Konzeption der Philosophie der Kunst vor, das für die philosophische Auseinandersetzung um die Bedeutung der Hegelschen Ästhetik noch heute interessant ist. Die Mitschrift gibt Aufschluß über Gegenstand und Entwicklung der Philosophie der Kunst, die Hegel seinen Berliner Studenten vortrug und bis zu seinem Tod ergänzt, erweitert und umstrukturiert hat. Die Studienausgabe zu Hegels Berliner Ästhetikvorlesungen dokumentiert die einzige bekannte Nachschrift der Hegelschen Vorlesung über Ästhetik oder Philosophie der Kunst (...) aus dem Sommersemester 1823. Der Hegelschüler und spätere Herausgeber der Hegelschen Ästhetik hat die Vorlesung knapp und klar mitgeschrieben und nachträglich mit gliedernden Randbemerkungen versehen. Will man sich heute mit Hegels Philosophie der Kunst auseinandersetzen, dann genügt die 1835 bzw. 1842 veröffentlichte Druckfassung der 'Ästhetik' nicht mehr, denn sie gibt kein zuverlässiges Bild der Hegelschen Kunstphilosophie. Daher wird es nötig, sich sowohl für das Studium als auch in der Forschung an den Vorlesungsnachschriften zu orientieren. An diesen Nachschriften wird im Gegensatz zur Druckfassung der Ästhetik die Aktualität der Hegelschen Gedanken erkennbar, die man seiner Philosophie der Kunst auf der Basis der bisher bekannten Textfassung zu Unrecht zuerkannt oder aberkannt hat. Die Nachschrift enthält einen Grundriß der 'Ästhetik' oder Philosophie der Kunst, der die für Hegel charakteristische Bestimmung der Kunst aus ihrer geistes- bzw. kulturgeschichtlichen Funktion erkennen läßt. Die Orientierung der philosophischen Strukturierung an der Realität der Künste und die dadurch gewonnene rational rekonstruierte Verknüpfung der philosophischen mit der historischen Betrachtung der Kunst in einen phänomenologischen Ansatz unterscheidet die Vorlesungen von der späteren, dialektisch durchkonstruierten Druckfassung der Ästhetik. Durch den Vergleich der Ästhetik mit den Vorlesungszeugnissen zu Hegels vier Berliner Vorlesungen über Ästhetik oder Philosophie der Kunst ließ sich in vielen Einzelstudien nachweisen, daß Hegels originäre Konzeption nur in den Vorlesungsnachschriften präsent ist. Usually, the ontology of art is executed as an ontology of artworks. This has the consequence that the answer to the question what art is says nothing about why art is valuable. But it is, I argue, necessary to determine the value of art if one wants to say what art is. In order to account for the value of art, I start with the claim that art is a practice of transformation. Thus, I propose to develop the ontology of (...) art as the ontology of a practice of transformation. The practice in question has four elements: first artworks, second interpretive activities through which recipients and producers follow the constellations realized in artworks, third ordinary practices which are reflected through interpretive activities, and fourth practices of art criticism. By way of these four elements art is realized. According to the proposed conception, art is a profoundly unstable practice which challenges human beings and their self-understandings in such a way that they and their self-understandings develop further. In editing the hitherto unpublished works of Ernst Cassirer often new questions emerge. One of these questions is the following: Why does Cassirer mention Tolstoy in arguing about art as a symbolic form? By discussing the theoretical background of this question and the educational value of art a deeper insight on the relation of art and freedom will be the consequence.

The paper discusses Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception as a phenomenology of art. The prevalence of examples from the arts in his text indicates that works of art possess the very same dynamic of reflexivity that the phenomenological project as a whole seeks to develop. Furthermore, by way of confrontation with works of art, the project is driven to transcend itself – or more precisely: to reflect itself. This »new style« of reflexivity may be discussed as »aesthetic incorporation.«.
